Does anyone know when Terry Hearns new book is out I went to last years Carp Society show and there was talk about it coming out this year ie this month but can't see anything online

THE most eagerly awaited book in many many years
Probably the first carp book which I have looked forward to in some years. A bit disappointed at the chapters though...he is focussing in the captures which we already know a lot about and holding the interesting stuff back.

I agree Mark, of the chapters I've seen they all seem to be waters that are covered elsewhere in one way or another. I'm hoping there's a couple of surprises in there.

Ah cool
I remember an interview a few years ago when first mentioned the 3rd book. He said because of the time since the 2nd one there was too much to cover so he was just going to cover the best captures.

agree on Chertsey.
regarding choco, i dont think (from memory - which is not always correct!) there wasnt much to say - found an inlet pipe starting up, saw a few fish in the area and dropped a couple of baits close in and off it went with choco (and another good one from memory).

There was issues with delivery and damaged packages for Still Searching back in the day, if my memory serves me correct. The RMC forum at the time was awash with unhappy customers.

As I purchased my copy I imagined a vast book shop full of bowing shelves and dusty floors. Behind the counter is an ancient old fella with a shuffling gait and short term memory loss who politely sets off, full of good intention but a foggy head, to fetch each individual order.
Should he manage to retrieve the correct book, he sets about writing your receipt with a scratchy quill and counts out your change, very slowly, in small coinage.

I actually called in the shop the other day and asked the old boy if he had Fly Fishing by J R Hartley and he really perked up...

its why I get my books mostly from the shows and get author to sign them to rich from....who ever..got many that are worth lots to a few id expect but worth feck all with my name in it. end of the day when I'm 6 ft under my daughters can bin or read them..

I paid 35 quid for international postage - could almost have picked them up cheaper. Got three emails - one for each book saying that it had been shipped and one saying that my order was completed. Strange since Terrys book wasn't going to be shipped until the 7th.

I disagree. I found his second book a much more enjoyable read. Maybe that both Terry and his angling had matured somewhat but I related much more to him and his fishing at that point than in his 1st book

I got a confirmation email yesterday, now got another and also an email stating books been shipped..calm have already stated today they aren't shipping until Monday. bloody strange..

It sounded like a smart way for the publisher to ensure that they cover costs for a poor seller and then splitting the profits of it is successful.

Seen a few have turned up battered. Looks like Calm Productions sent the books out in jiffy bags, which therefore no protection on the edges or corners. Just more evidence that the company are total rubbish.

yes mines damaged, looks like it has been dropped on its side and dented the hard cover front and back.was wrapped in bubble wrap then put inside a plastic bag. looked like it had been wrapped by a 3 year old..

Same with mine. Clearly been dropped on it's edge with the corners having been crushed. Almost certainly down to the poor packaging. That said, got the book and it does not change how it reads, so not too unhappy

I did say not too unhappy as book will read the same. That said if I pay for any goods that arrive in poor condition I will be unhappy. The author in this case is completely irrelevant as I buy books to read, not for resale value but getting a brand new book in slightly damaged condition is a bit frustrating

you have received 2 signed copies? So much for their "even if you buy multiple copies you will only receive one signed copy" policy. Just received 8 emails ( for 1 order ) that my 2 books have been shipped, no tracking information whatsoever and they have to make it to the Netherlands, hope they invested in some cardboard packaging for the international orders. Never had issues with them in the past, but this release has been handled very poorly.

The scalping on eBay I don't agree on at all, more fool the idiots that buy them at over inflated prices creating a market for it.
Can't personally see point in keeping one unread when there are people that wanted one that didn't manage to get one.

Look at most things new out like kids toys (LOL Dolls etc) new games consoles, books etc there is never enough to cover demand and companies probably manufacture on the cautious side so not to be left with stock which in turn cause a bit of a frenzy and people see an opportunity to grab as much as they can knowing they can make a few quid. Then once the initial frenzy dies down and stocks are replenished everyone can get what they want (unless it's a limited edition obviously)
Mental that people are happy to pay 2-3+ times the price for this book when there is going to be more available in a few weeks or so 🤷🏻♂️

Misses got nothing when she ordered mine at 5.30am on the 2nd of December she tried the first night but it crashed on her, when she did manage to place the order online she had no confirmation email no shipping message nothing, it turned up yesterday.
Do you guys genuinely know anyone that would be willing to pay over £100 for the book on eBay? Seems crazy to me and I do wonder whether a lot of the bidding is fake on there which then encourages people to pay over the odds.
I haven't used eBay for ages but seem to remember you can cancel the sale completely after the auction ends and just give an excuse of ‘item being damaged' - I'm thinking if they get a mate to bid initially and they don't get get any genuine bids after that point.

What's wrong with a photocopy can't you get someone to do that for you?
I used to get books from the library and take them into work to photocopy.
Not been to a library for a while do they no longer keep fishing books?, they used to be able to transfer them from branch to branch.

I thought the reproduction quality of the new book was pretty poor in places, some of the pictures are printed so dark and text is blurred on a few pages.
Having only read the Ivy pool chapter thus far, which was a good tale to be fair. Although, much of the book has been spoken about to a lesser extent in the past, more or less.

I agree that print quality is not the best, which is a bit of a surprise given that hey knew how popular it would be.
In terms of content not read it yet, but covers Burghfield, Northwycke, Spitfire Pool, Ashmead, Wasing, the Thames plus a few others so a good variety of venues. I don't doubt for a second that it will be a good read

Didn't think it was a secret that it was the Ellis. Tels referred to it by name in videos before and I thought it was fairly common knowledge if you're from vaguely round the area.
Both the big mirrors gone now, as is the ‘Ivy Pool' mirror, lost that in the summer. And the Tunnels fish all died as well.
I know there's a few Tel enthusiasts that like to try and follow the same path of lakes and fish - they might struggle emulating the majority of these now 😂

That's the point - it used to be about the “mystery” of either relatively unknown “history” fish and/or hard venues, whereas now most of the fish are younger known fish, albeit from a decent looking fast growing strain.
Just think how old Bazil, Mary, Heather, the Park Lake fish, two tone, etc were compared to some of the newer fish

New is a relative point with age. The fish that were ‘new' when Bazil was ‘old' twenty years ago are the same age now. Many are just off the circuit of YouTube and book whoring.

There won't be stacks of unknown fish / venues because 1. They don't really exist anymore or not to the extent of filling a book about them and 2. he has sponsers to keep happy so most of his captures are published by ESP one way or another

There aren't even any unknown waters anymore with the advent of Google Earth etc. I'm sure there are a few whoppers out there in some of the big reservoirs and I bet there are a few trying for them, that's exciting.

This hasn't got anything to do with Royal Mail delays. I'm 99% sure it's down to Calm messing it all up which they have done from the very beginning

My conspiracy theory is the books were never tracked so many of the signed one could go missing.
If you've not received your book it's because it was a signed one. In a couple of weeks time you'll get an apology an unsigned one will be delivered promptly.

They have said a re print will be done at the end of Jan. loads of people moaning about books arriving damaged. When they finally get their heads out of the sand and start answering people's calls, emails, messages and posts I can see them having to refund a lot of people for missing books and damaged books that can't be replaced as there are no more books left

Will people go to the time, trouble, and cost to return a minor damaged 1st edition for a second print edition. The latter may also turn up with similar issues.
Distance selling regulations exist but I bet millions of items at comparatively small cost are simply kept by unsatisfied customers. Sad but true, and I bet most of us have been guilty of it.

Ordered on the 2nd, it turned up yesterday... usual story no tracking info, a dozen confirmation emails, no reply to messages or emails, no answering the phone but it did at least arrive. Very very minor damage to one corner but at least I can read it.
Mr Lane has gone quiet about the release of his book over the last couple of weeks, I hope we don't have a repeat performance!

Received mine a few days ago and I went straight to the ‘Tunnels' chapter as it's a lake I fished and loved. From a writers perspective, waiting a decade or more, before you publish your long awaited book, would stop the sheep following in his footsteps as all those known big target fish are dead, so no point clogging up those potential waters, club tickets.
Keeping sponsors happy and previous water members as well.

I have a friend who is a carp book collector. I was working in his house this weekend when he happened to have just received Terry's book and Subsurface 4. I have to say from a purely design and feel point of view, Terry's was very underwhelming. I don't think Calm Productions have really done him justice at all. It's got a cramped feel to it, the whole thing looks shoe horned in. The layout is far too boxy. Simple half page photo, top or bottom of the page with text crammed in above/ underneath. Very disappointing. Doesn't have a feel of a designed book, more an exercise of just fitting it all in. If it had the layout and feel of the latest subsurface or the bcsg books it would be amazing. As it is, although I'm sure it's a brilliant read, it looks and feels like just another carp book. Shame as it could have been spectacular. A missed opportunity to do something very special.

Went strait to the bid S chapter , somewhere I got chucked off once , but had I known the score would have chanced my arm again . The reason ? , because I put some fish in there , scaley lovely young fish from the lake at the back. It was due to be filled in , and I had permission to fish it , I caught half a dozen fish and it seemed silly to put them back , so in the big S they went . A non starter these days , but over 30 years ago things were slightly different

It was due to be filled in , and I had permission to fish it , I caught half a dozen fish and it seemed silly to put them back , so in the big S they went . A non starter these days , but over 30 years ago things were slightly different

I think it's brilliant - so well written. Some of the stories are familiar from his ESP videos and other things but am thoroughly enjoying it.

Yes Ivy (L) and Ellis I found the best bits, though I'd have much rather preferred Pinge than the Northwyke chapter which was a bit pointless. Excellent book though.

They all died, 16 or so big carp a few smaller ones, big perch like 5lb plus, big pike and lots of jacks. The suprising thing were the amount of big eels in there but we think a lot of these survived. Dont think they are going to restock.

I must admit, I'm a couple of chapters in and so far it's all very samey. I'm not feeling it yet however I'm sure I will soon, might give it another whirl after a break..... or we get locked down properly again and books become my only escape!

Finally got mine on New Years Eve, but then I do live a bit further away than most.
I ordered 3 books - 2 from Calm Productions; Through the Mist & Rolling in the Deep - and also Subsurface IV
The postage to Australia for the 2 from Calm doubled the cost of each book (36 quid each!!!), whereas the Subsurface postage was slightly cheaper at 20 quid.
As has been mentioned many times already, the 2 books from Calm each came in a jiffy bag and arrived damaged, whereas the Subsurface book was well packed in cardboard and arrived completely in tact.
Content-wise, I'm more impressed with Adam Penning's book than Terry's. I think its because the videos have already spoilt a number of the stories so there is no mystery in them. although there are a few interesting bits. Adams is much more of a life story and that appeals more.
Subsurface IV is a different beast altogether, and I'm well impressed, despite what others have said about the lack of words. A quick flick through the pages makes me want to get back out on the bank of my syndicate, but I fear that is more than a year off now. Think I'll be getting a few more books before wetting a line ...

It is warm/cold for me as well but as others said knowing about captures before hand seeing them on web, his Christmas videos etc does spoil a lot but I guess that is the nature of the beast now days. They also both fish for a living now, whereas the early books were about the pleasure and scraping by in the process. It's bound to have an effect on the stories.

made my eyes bleed trying to read it, not sure if anyone else has the same, wording on all left hand pages to far over towards the spine meaning I virtually have to snap the book in half to read it. gave up looking at the photos aswell,all to dark.

Got to agree with you on the pictures being dark but my copy hasnt got the print problems , it has got smudges of blue ink on some of the pages though. Its well written ( unlike my posts 😂😂 but i think the markets been flooded with these type of books now and they're all pretty much the same. Getting a bit boring, i got to the burghfield chapter and couldnt be bothered to read it so stuck it back on the book shelf with the other 40 or so books...

my wife who stayed up until 03.30 on the launch night to get it for me asked "well was it worth all the hype and effort ?"
I of course replied " yeh great" ,
not really though, found it fairly hard going, and unlike his first two easy to put down. As others have said, his videos which I love, meant I knew most of the stories already.
However just started Adam Pennings book and that seems very good so far 👌

Having just finished it I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the earlier chapters on the Big S. Only thing I would say is if you have seen the YouTube clips then the last two chapters are an anticlimax. Only thing that spoilt it really.
I see the shambles that are Calm Productions are releasing a second run of “Through the Mist” later this month.

It's not bad, just not great. The biggest issue is the print quality, most pages have words missing or faded, which is an issue with the publisher not the author. One of the things I do like about the book is that Terry continues to tell it how it is, he doesn't big himself up at all, just tells the story as he remembers it

Through the Green Gate - Now that is a superb book
As for the new Hearn book, it is a good read (which is the main thing) but I agree with the comments regarding seeing the ESP videos. Not sure there is a way around that though as he has to keep his sponsers happy inbetween books

I keep seeing comments about the vids. That is a perception thing. The book should be taken at face value. I agree that having seen the films the read is less exciting, but the book is no less brilliant for it imo.
Green gate is a great, great read but not as good as through the mist imo.
Edit: as for the print quality, that has no relevance to the read itself. If that ruins it for you, you're not reading it properly imo. It's the story itself that should be rated.

I'm halfway through after finally getting mine delivered after Xmas. I'm really liking it, have skipped the Thames chapter though as there were obviously two videos about that and didn't think much more could be said about it

you might be suprised,how many times do people say that a book is so much better than a film or a film didnt do the book justice.
I think the written word on emotions, feelings,disappointment, sadness and excitement can be captured so much better when a writer is writing and re living the moment in their head as it all comes back to them.

Totally agree Yonny, some of my favourite books were bought from the charity shop and have other peoples tea/baked bean/god knows splashed on them. Makes no difference whatsoever to the story within.

Skipping chapters is just plain ridiculous, there's far more detail in those chapters than the YouTube vids!
I really enjoyed the Ellis chapter, what a bit of angling that was.

Didn't say I skipped the chapter to not read said i will go back to it just don't feel like reading it currently because Thames is the least appealing to me... is that better 😂

Regardless of what your purchasing and what it costs your paying for a product which should be free of any faults or defects
It's upto you wether you accept it or not
Calm need to improve the quality of product and service after this book release though. The only way to do that is by their customers highlighting the errors in the book.
Maybe next time they won't rush a release so much

Let's get real. A couple of faded words makes zero difference to the read of the book. Hardy worth crying about. If you had pages missing or paragraphs hard to read then by all means spit your dummy out. But over a couple of words, which incidentally are still readable? Doesn't exactly warrant this level of upset does it

I agree that calm are shambolic, and I agree that they need to be told.
But I cant be bothered to labour my point regards the read itself for a third time.

I've read books with numerous shocking spelling errors and God knows what, and seen subtitled videos with the spelling of a 6 year old. With spellcheck there's no excuse. Didn't spoil the content of the book though but it did wind me up LOL

Yeah carp books in particular are terrible for it. I guess ultimately the authors are anglers as opposed to writers. But I agree it doesnt hurt to hit the spell check once in a while

BEWARE, for those ho[ing to buy a 1st edition, on the bay at the moment there are sellers advertising these books as new and unread and collectable, yet they dont tell the buyer that its a 2021 second edition which is available from Calm for £35 plus delivery.
Although sellers are doing nothing wrong, they are not given all the information, on the bay right now there are bids of over £50 for these with 2 or 3 days to go!!
It always pays to read description and ask the seller, especially if it does not state its a 1st edition.

Yes the book prices have shot yo again in recent months, partly because of the resurgence in collecting and partly due to the drought in recent books. There are collectors out there at the moment who will buy multiple copies of, for example, Waiting for Waddle, Merry Olde Dance etc, and sit on them as an investment.

A mate of mine sold his whole collection a couple of years ago when the market was on its knees and he is feeling pretty sick about it now! It's definitely a case of picking the right books though and print run is obviously the main factor which has pushed up prices for Waddle, Merry Olde, Alan Tomkins etc.

Received my reprint edition last week. Perfectly well packaged. Read the first 3 chapters and no obvious print issues. More importantly, I'm enjoying it!
I agree about the crazy prices that some books go for-kind of wish I'd looked after some of my first editions better. But then again, I buy to read and enjoy, not as an investment.
That said, I might flog my Subsurface 1 if only to help stock the freezer for the year ahead.

I enjoyed it - who wouldn't enjoy the writings of Terry and read about his adventures however, (might take some flack here), it felt like i was reading regurgitated material and stories. I suppose social media, magazine writings and ESP videos had already compromised a lot of these stories and i felt that i knew the ending before starting each chapter, i just felt a little bit (only a small bit) of magic has been lost when reading books nowadays and to be honest i thought i would never say that about a TH book.
I remember reading "in pursuit" and each page was captivating as you went through the story making up assumptions on what is going to happen next - you just don't get that nowadays as it's already out there.
Don't get me wrong, the book will stand front and centre on the old bookcase and be regularly thumbed.
I look forward to the all species book that TH will hopefully publish, i reckon he can recapture the magic (ala Yates) telling stories that nobody knows the ending of.

I agree, that any book you read from a high profile angler these days, has probably already been published in some form or other previously, especially from someone like TH who makes his living from angling.
It's not a new thing though - even 'In Pursuit' suffered from it, because all the early Yateley chapters in the book, had already been published in Rob Maylins Big Carp magazine in the early 90's.
