Yep - that’s the video?

You were the guy fishing at the start of the season in that spot 3 years ago? I was (am) one of the annoying runners 😂

I had assumed that whoever was there was doing well as the swim was more and more worn each week!

I live there too. Did you see this? https://youtu.be/Gja423iFBlM?is=pBF7sB5cQi89OReQ

I’ve tried the river but after a few days pre-bating the bream drove me mad after dark. And during the days the crays and the boats were a pain.

In spite of running beside the river for probably 100 hours over the last few years I’ve only ever seen carp in it once, but it seems to have them all along it by the time it gets to Godalming.

It went on the market earlier this year - I saw it on fisheries4sale - and the club lost the water.

New fencing has been erected and a lot of work has been done. My guess is that it has been added to the grounds of a local estate.

I remember him from Darenth in the late ‘80’s.

He had just written an article about a carp fishing holiday to the Netherlands and I was telling him how the article made me want to go there to fish .. and I had no idea it was him when I said that.

He laughed and told me that he wrote it. (In those days carp fishing was a small world)

He seemed a top bloke.

You can definitely apply more pressure with a shorter rod (or one that bends more easily so the it has a shorter length when under load).

But a higher tc rod lets you feel in control.

I tried fishing for double figure carp on a 4 weight 7.5 ft fibreglass fly rod. I felt completely out of control but only had to give 6 - 10 feet of line.

On a proper carp rod and fixed spool reel with a great drag I felt in control but they made 20 yard runs.

Rods are a second form lever LINKY POO™ https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/z24b9qt/revision/1

Thank you - sounds simple, and like a trip to Bass Pro is in order!

I am going to be fishing in Canada on a lake that I have fished at before.

It has a number of rocks and snags that used to be fine to combat with 20lb mainline.

Over the past few years it has started to have dense weed (funnily enough, Canadian pondweed) from the bottom to the surface in water 6 - 12 feet deep.

The weed, and many of the rocks, now have zebra mussels on them, and these seem to be a particular problem in the weed as they can be midwater so easier for a running fish to pull the line past.

What gear would people recommend in this situation? I was thinking of 50lb PowerPro floating braid mainline to a 50lb mono snag leader, possibly with a sub float, but am not sure if that is overkill and whether a more normal set up like 30lb braid to 30lb flouro leaders would be sufficient.

I’ll be fishing in shallow water (6 to 18 feet deep) and likely to be landing fish from a boat due to the weed.

End rigs aren’t a concern as naive fish so will just use simple rigs and 30lb stiff hooklinks.

As a member of Godalming Angling, it’s out of my hands as they have closed all the lakes after one lake lost several fish (thankfully Broadwater not Wood Lake).

On the one hand I am supportive, but I do wonder why the heat isn’t a problem for fish on the Continent.

Looks like fishmeal prices will be rising again. https://removepaywalls.com/https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2026-07-01/the-world-has-an-anchovy-supply-problem

As always, will be interesting to see how different companies approach this
