What's everyone's favourite bait from back in the day

In the late 90's when I really started carping I used for years nutabaits cream cajouser and Nash monster pursuit.

But I did catch a lot on Nash strawberry jam but did not like 😹

Home made DT Baits Peach was the first boilies I briefly used. Then moved onto Activ-8, then NRG.

Nutrabaits Bfm and original Nash scopex squid.

Nashbait peach melba's, nutrabaits trigga and the first freezer Baits were carp company ice red c+c. Edit I think I've just remembered the melba's May have been Kevin maddock's not Nash lol. Oh and the first popups I bought were hbs pukka pinapple's.

At the start for me it was Kevin Maddox boilies where you got 2 hooks free in each pack

Rolling my own would be Nutrabaits big fish mix, Salmon oil, sweet cajosur things and plum flavour.
What ever basically Julian cundiff was using 🤣🤣

As a kid I rented one of the caravans on Withy pool. Upon my arrival Kevin gave me two bags of his Gorgonzola boilies

Richworth Tutti Frutti to be exact,all others were just pretenders. The 10mm boilies
were a fantastic bait.

Solar winter mix and pro active pineapple done very well on both in the winter

First boilies I bought were Nutrabaits pineapple and bannna, probably around 1992. I never got on with them or persevered with them. Boilies were a new introduction into my fishing, carp anglers were using boilies so I thought I would try them. They did not wriggle, were not meaty and seemed so totally unnatural for me, a round flavoured ball just sat there, back on the meat and corn for me

There's a few baits that I have used over the years that I have had a lot of success on

BFM, Tear the lid off the bucket and when you smell it you just know it's going to work

Did a bit on Trigga but mainly the ice version, had a few good years on this, pre-rolled and rolling my own but again, preferred the BFM

Premier baits Aminos and Superamino's caught me a lot of fish

Nash monster pursuit and later the Nash Tangee peach caught me a lot of fish. If I want a firm bait, even today, it's Nash if it's ready rolled. Firm but attractive and great where there are a lot of silver fish

Mainline Activ 8 was a good bait, it caught a lot of carp around me, spent a bit of time on this but also used the activator in my own base and baits for a while, caught a few on Fusion too but did not spend a long time on it

Nothing ventured, nothing gained

Cor, this question brings back some memories.

Salmon Supreme

Nutrabaits Enervite, Enervite Gold, Big Fish Mix and Trigga

New Concepts Baits Mariner Mix.

All of those produced a few fish, along with experimentation in bait making back as far back as 1985, and upsetting my mother with some major smells from some mixes I came up with.
I think the worst stink was Chappie dog food, ground Pond pellets and semolina mixed with egg, but boy did it work.

I remember buying the cotswolds bait meta bait base mix with monster allure in around 1989-1990 or so. First boilies I ever made

first used custard powder and luncheon meat late 70s..first started rolling my own using Geoff kemps ultra mix with dairy cream flavour..first ready rolled was rich worth salmon supreme, worked a treat when they got sticky and started to turn.. then used mission baits condensed milk..supplied by the don.. then darenth valley baits skunk and geranium..

Think they were richworth strawberry flavour. Couldn't afford to chuck any freebies in back in the day and they care in small packs. Remember sitting in the old mans sapphire one freezing day watching the rods and a blackbird flew down and pulled one out of the bag. Christ above knows what he was going to do with it, they were like marbles but they smelt lovely

After that we made our own with big fish mix and leek flavour which absolutely stank.

I can't go back that far with my carp fishing but I do miss CC Moore Equinox (only been gone a few years). 1st boilies used properly were Dynamite Baits Pineapple and spicy shrimp and crab

Forgotten About Nash whiskey! I got some as a youngster as they sounded cool at the time didn't catch much on them! 😹

Been Interesting the last 20/30 years watching boilies evolve a change.

Some good bait out there now much better for the fish

Feel like I was a bit late to the scene compared to some on here

I started in 2003 and my first pack of boilies were ritchworths strawberry jam, first time using them and I had a 9 and half mirror that stood as a PB for a few years.
After that it was nash white chocolate that was a winner for me back then, fish seemed to love them on my local

The one's I can remember from from the 90s were
Nash Strawberry birdfood
Nash Sting
Then Activ 8 was the game changer for me (but it seemed to change in later years didn't quite smell the same unless that was my imagination)
GLM From Eric's the Crossgates shop (when Sam first bought the shop they dabbled in bait making)
These day's I was on Dynamite Source but my water seems to be dominated by Krill baits so had to follow suit

Home made sorta boilie flavoured with Hutchies monster Crab. Some of my gear still smells of that stuff. Great.

It was an amazing bait, Mark knew his stuff big time.

Richworth tropicana and richworth pineapple there was also a tropicana we used that came in a plastic tub that would only be described as the ultimate special you could smell them through the tub they were potent the tub was like a chippy meal tub wish i could get them again caught everywhere on them

Remember how everybody would swear by a certain make or flavour back then as though their life depended on it. And how word would spread that a bait had 'blown', wrecking your confidence and causing a hunt for the next magic flavour. The variety of boilies chosen by this small census has proved that to be the bunkum it was.

My first boilies were, I think, trout pellet flavoured and I used them for barbel instead of my usual paste. But I know I had Richworth Tutti's around that time too.

Nash whisky ready mades caught me far more fish than I was expecting, that flavour has been a firm favourite in my own baits for years since.

I used to have a thing for Nash Formula 1, other than that...

Activ-8
Fusion
Rosehip isotonic
Trigga
and the bait i still use Essential B5

I think in the 80s as a teenager the first boilies I used were Wild Cherry and Tutti Frutti, probably Richworth.
I loved the smell of them and would often nibble on a few of the Wild Cherry on the bank.

We then used some homemade ones until I came back to carping proper about 20 years ago when I remember using Maple 8 with a string of hook baits sat in the bottle of glug as well. Used them on my first French trip in 2005 to catch my first 20.
Also tried Tangy Squid but couldn't get any luck with it so moved on to Source.

Nowadays I mostly use small popups rather than the donkey-chokers of years gone by.

All the old flavours seemed to be more about catching the angler than fish

Monster pursuit, spicy shrimp and prawn, activ-8, and a real odd one richworths white chocolate boilies that came in the little 250g packs

I really miss the old Nash range along with some of Hutchy's old range.

Anyone remember a mix (think from British groundbaits?) called 'Protiemix'?
You could make it up as a paste with water or add eggs to skin it as a boilie? There was a matching groundbait called 'Meatymix'....
My first carp was caught on a Hutchinson boilie mix called 'Blackjuice' back in the late 70's
Those early Hutchy mixes like Seafood blend etc. must've been some of the earliest readymixes available before the likes of Richworth came along with the all conquering frozen Tuttis, pineapple Hawaiian etc.

The original Activ8 was a brilliant bait for both carp & barbel. The newer version isn't a patch on the original. Solar Neptune mix with 3ml Squid & Octopus & 2ml Hutchy's Monster Crab. Boy did that bait catch some fish but the smell was something else. My mum went ballistic when I made that in her kitchen, she ended up going to stay with my gran for a week waiting for the smell to go

Nutrabaits Trigga for me but when I stopped using that ($$$) Lea Valley Baits Pink Zing was a good bait for me late 90's early 2000's

The Grange for me, still my most successful bait

BFM, S+O, BPO, GLM and FFIO for me.

That'll probably make sense to a lot of people I reckon! 👍🏻

Lots of early success on active 8 and and soon as it came out, assassin 8 which I believe on the first outing I caught my first thirty and p.b.

I loved a few baits from the early 2000's

Nutrabaits Trigga is probably my all time favourite bait but it's not the same as I remember it and also to expensive for me

Mainline Pro-Activ Pineapple i also had some great success with

Mainline NRG was also another favourite of mine

Nash Scopex Squid was good also but that's changed now as well from what I remember


I'm guessing a lot of the changes have come due to EU regulations over the years with certain thing being outlawed etc

Ive often wondered why they changed Activ8. I'm guessing its because an ingredient changed or was discontinued or got too expensive. Shame as it's unrecognisable from the bait I loved in the 90s.

I bet if they could rerelease it in its original form somehow they'd give a lot of the other bait companies a few sleepless nights. I must be honest I'm not a mainline fan, apart from a small dabble with the cell when it first came out Ive had no interest in any of the ‘modern' baits, but id switch back onto the original A8 tomorrow.

I doubt there is a water about that has not seen Activ 8 over the years, caught them all around me many times over. Like a bailiff on one water once told me, these fish have been brought up on Activ 8, like a lot of others I suspect. Got to be one of the most successful baits of all time.

Shame Assassin 8 wasn't for me, didn't take a fish on it in around 3 months, gone!

Original Activ8 was something else. I also had a load using Nashys Monster Pursuit with Robin Red and Activ8 activator

Trigga...The original was truly amazing, without doubt the most effective bait (both instant and long term) that I have ever used.

Cream Cajouser Classic Combination shelf life (aka The Four Seas - geddit).

Gone but not forgotten.

The original Activ-8 followed by Vision Baits LT94 and LTM. Vision's Ocean Protein would have been a game changer if it'd been in production a bit longer

I used to roll my own when younger but that changed when I started using bait much more and then I bought....

Nutrabaits BFM & Cranberry, then Raspberry, then a chap called Lee on a syndi I was on was using his own flavour on BFM, LPX which I'd still use to this day if still available. I did try Trigga for a year or so, but went back to BFM.

Tried briefly Activ 8 when it came out (O.K) Carp Company Icelandic Red & Caviar (I Liked a lot but kept using BFM). Also liked Solar Top Banana at the time as a alternative to BFM, still use a Banana boilie to this day.

Richworth Crab & Mussel, by Christ that was a good Tench bait, I'd still use that to this day for them too.

Premier baits with fish feed inducing oil and peach when you had to buy the separate ingredients. I had to find out what a capelin was. The ingredients from Premier also formed the basis of my first method mixes back in 1996.

Mike Winstone was field testing for mainline and put me on the Activ8 right from the off. I wasn't aware it had changed due to my decade in the wilderness, so it looks like I won't be using that. As others have said it was also a devastating barbel bait, but also catfish loved the stuff.

My all time bait of choice doesn't belong in this thread.................sweetcorn.

Favourite ready has to be Nash 'The Sting' Fishmeal

Richworth tuties,tropicana, and tigernut in the 80s,then made our own with bird food from haiths,and fishmeal from Izac Spencers in Fleetwood 90s then nutrabaits enervite with kryston ambio and strawberry 90s, mid 90s
went on hutchies Liver mix and attractors, as used by Martin Clarke,think he called it the hauler mix

for me - a range of Richworth readymades (normally bought from the hut at Broadlands - along with pva bags and pellet!) - mainly crab and mussel, or Esterberry in winter.

Activ-8

Monster Pursuit, Shellfish SA, Amino Liver SA and Salmon oil Palatant (home rolled - parents loved that)

Solar Club mix - Squid and Oct, Ester Cream and Stimuli Amino - rolled by Solar and delivered.

Nash Whiskey was another favourite through my teens.

Richworth original Tutti Frutti, it also caught me my first French 40+fish either Frozen or Shelflife

Lee on a syndi I was on was using his own flavour on BFM, LPX which I'd still use to this day if still available.

If this is Lee Walton you are referring to then he was a great inventor whose speciality was blending various attractors. LPX stands for 'LeePex'. In other words it was his version of Scopex and hugely effective it was/is too.

That's the one Ken The water used to see the guys from NB every now and then, a lot of NB bait went in. I was afraid if I referred to it as Leepex no one would know what I was talking about

I caught a lot of fish on maple-8, it wasnt an assult on the senses like many early 2000s baits.

That was one of my best pals favourite baits. He caught a lot of fish on it. Like you say, smelt amazing and washed out really quickly

He then went onto Trigga with maple 8 activator, home rolled

Mid 80's; mate & I used to come back from the pub on a Friday night (aged 16/17, ahem), dive into parents kitchen & roll a couple of mixes of Richworth 50/50 with Hutchy's intense sweetner & Maple Creme. Then we either rode to the lake (occasionally walked!) the 5 miles to the lake & used said bait to catch a few upper singles / low doubles. Halcyon days.

I still utterly love the maple creme smell & find it incredibly evocative! Haven't actually used it to fish with for a while though, perhaps I should!

Richworth 50/50 and strawberry or sbs peanut. Loved the nrg and then the Nash F1 in 10 mm. Must have uses tons of the bait.

Not exactly an old bait but found a 5kg bag of Sticky Vortex in my garage last weekend, must be 5+ years old (original vortex rather than the plus). Never used vortex before and assume I must have bought it by mistake instead of another 'flavour'.
Tried it on one rod on an overnighter last night, swiftly put the second rod on it and finished with 19 fish in ~ 18 hours. May have to try it again some time.

Took me nearly 20years before I used a boilie that I didn't make myself. I can recall a few mates using the Richworth ready mades when they first came out and sure, they caught fish, but those of us still rolling our own had a definite edge. I used to get all my ingredients from Geoff Kemp and his Pink Zing flavour caught me a lot of fish back then. Then Premier Baits came along and I was starting to use their base mixes and oils. Then at some point, I started to buy ready mades, but only when I got to the point where I thought they were as good as I can roll myself... Lockdown saw me bait making again. In fact, I ended up making 50kg of shelf life boilies, using a CC Moore base mix with a couple of enhancements thrown in. Saved myself a few quid in the process as well and taught the missis how to roll boilies

Yep. That is still an absolute belter of a bait. Icelandic red with Cranberry & Caviar. With a healthy glug of the Aminol.

I'd take that anywhere. The only reason I stopped using them was that they kept getting my orders wrong.

I had a mate call me up once and ask if I had bait on order. I asked him how he knew, cos its just been delivered to me was his answer, and he didnt even have an order placed with them. Then when he opened up the box half the stuff id ordered was missing anyway.

I had another order turn up with only half the bits id ordered to make hookbaits as well. So I gave up, which is a shame cos that Ice red with C&C and the natural impact are very well put together baits and can be bought at competitive prices as well.

I would love to have the money to buy carp company. Man what a business that could be. Their baits and dips, glugs etc are as good as anyones. With a good e-commerce website, a push on advertising, bait deals, promo videos on YouTube, trade days at the big tackle shops, that business could be amazing. They dont even attend shows anymore.

When you think about it, a business thats been producing quality bait for nearly thirty years, should not have been overtaken in market share by sticky, dna, baitworks etc etc. They have a top range of baits that catch as well as any out there, yet through poor marketing and not making sure orders are correct etc their market share just slipped and slipped.

I bet theres a huge number of guys who have come into the hobby in the last decade who dont even know who carp company are, and for that business, with a stellar bait like ice red thats shameful.

I saw Lewis Read using Blakes bait in a video recently and he's been Carp Company for decades.

I've been using ccmoore for 8 months or so but think I'm going back to the reds.
They seem to have more tie in with rigmarole since JP's been there

2 - Mistral Rosehip Isotonic . . .how it caught anything I've no idea but it did
3 - Nash Monster Pursuit . . .the smell alone makes me feel sick . . .
4 - Mainline Activ 8 . . .the smell alone gives me a boner . . .
5 - Essential B5 . . .don't fish enough to order in bulk these days but arguably one of the best baits ever produced . . .IMHO

You don't seem to hear so much about the B5 nowadays. Once a good bait always a good bait though.

Mainline's TCP/CP2000 brings back memories. I can remember ruining a couple of Fox coolbags with that smell lol.
