John Baker has now introduced 8ml bottles of some of his flavours into his range. Personally i think its a great idea, especially with his flavours as he only recommends low levels of them. Just thought I'd share it with you.

Agreed, that's a fab idea... As long as the postage is sensible?

The bottles are £2.95, not cheap but John only advocates parts of 1ml per mix. As for postage, not sure. It appears some are making a bit extra profit on the postage! Just my opinion.

At that price, that is the equivalent of £295 per litre for Ala-Salar. Cheaper than a bottle of 25 year old Mulberry, but there's a healthy profit there, methinks....

As everyone is now moaning about old bottles being “gone off” this may stop it happening and everyone gets fresh when they need it.
Smaller amounts always cost relatively more money

In the video he implies that these small bottles are supposed to be tasters / testers not for long term users.

Sell them for a quid then on that principle. I get the idea, it's a good one to try things out, but £2.95 for 8ml is blatant profiteering

Mr Bakers recent videos seems to have created bit of a stir in the bait making community.
Wonder why he is kicking into life on social media now all of a sudden?
Sounds like he's got some interesting new products coming out soon too!

He mentioned that the 8ml bottles will be enough to do 3-4kg so looking at about 2ml per kg, and that doesnt count the odd drip wasted in the syringe etc.

Exactly. I don't get the complaining £3 for enough flavour for 5kg of bait works for me. I plan on buying 4 to experiment with some hookbaits. That's £12 outlay instead of £68 for 100ml bottles.
Of course it works out dearer if you buy 8ml at a time but if I was using a lot of it I wouldn't be buying 8ml at a time so I think the price for litre buying this amount at a time is irrelevant.

I would say that rolling your own hookbaits is a far more popular hobby than knocking out 20kg at a time. The smaller bottles are perfect for that, seems like a positive for both JB and the punter.
I think JB's son is now involved and is trying to get the old man up to speed with how to reach the new audience. Hence the YouTube stuff.

It's a good idea I'm opinion. I've got several of JBs flavours that are approaching two years old and should by his accounts be binned.
I've noticed a change in some during a 12 month period, I do wish he used glass for his flavours.
Anyway £3 for 8 mls ain't bad really

Yes, I'd agree with the glass bottles comment. I think all suppliers should do so, seems to be only DT that still do that.

But take into account the postage and the bottle it's supplied in...
As has been said below, it works out much better to buy these in smaller bottles for things like Hookbaits or a bit of paste, than to buy a large bottle and end up wasting it.
I think it's a great idea.

Beat me to it, Boo!
Ok, firstly before anyone throws their toys out the pram - Johns flavours are amongst the best available, and the idea of doing 'samples' is a good idea.
But the cost of his products are ridiculous. Putting aside the issue of postage here on the samples...look at the other products. His base mixes, even at the 5kg bags, are a minimum of £11 per kilo, for example.
The worst example of profiteering is the Shrimp extract - which is EXACTLY the same as Bacarel's. If you wanted to buy a litre of John's, including postage, you would pay £27.83.
Bacarel's is £38 for 5 litres, equating to £7.60 per litre, as it is post free.
To quote Mr Lydon "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"........

I'm not sure it's profiteering,
On the volumes he sells he may need to charge a high mark up to make the business work.
Also, he has put decades of experience into sourcing the right ingredients. I can use Google or Alibaba to find cheaper options but are they as good? Some almost certainly will be, but with limited time and experience I can be sure by buying from him.
Obviously if you know that what he sells is identical to X at a fraction of the price, then it makes sense to buy the identical cheaper product. But many of us have no idea which is the right plum flavour to buy from a wholesaler and when we buy from John we are buying his product and his knowledge.

'Blatant profiteering'? It's not the bloody Covid vaccine. It's stuff to make your bait smell. There are cheaper alternatives.
Lets not pretend the hundreds of little envelopes of plastic rig bits for 3 or 4 quid a go represent value for money.

Catch it labs prices: 50ml for £4.95 (cost per litre of £99) or buy 1 litre for £19 are they profiteering also?
Buy smaller quantities and pay a premium its the same in any walk of life. I bought the mrs 50ml of perfume for xmas it cost £60 i could buy 100ml for £75, some costs remain consistent regardless of quantity sold.
Seems to me someone has a beef with JB baits in general, if not why single out them when every bait and tackle company on the market has extortionately high margins., At least with JB you know you are getting quality for the price unlike many others i could mention....

Exactly.
I'd rather get a couple of these smaller bottles to use in my expensive milk protein winter bait, which I don't use a lot of, then buy fresh again next year. Better than having a selection of barely used old flavours in your fridge .. like I have.

Will that be the same shrimp extract that bacarel are selling for £10.95 for 600g? Granted it gets cheaper if you buy more (sound familiar) but 600g is not so different to the 11.99 JB charges for 500g.
Another company in your eyes ''profiteering'' and its the very same company you chose to compare to JB in evidence of over pricing

It is yes, but it's post free, so still over a fiver cheaper once the JB postage is added. It's a shame that John doesn't do larger bottles, so I've used one comparison, that's all. 500ml of the stuff isn't going to last long anyway.
What did I say about people throwing their toys out of the pram?
As I said earlier, his flavours, in my view, are excellent. Just overpriced.
And as regards Jon's comment about 4 quid for a bit of plastic I am in total agreement. The problem is that carp anglers are gullible. They get told they have to drop their lead (by a lead manufacturer), that they need to change their hook after every fish (by a hook supplier), and that hook has to be sharpened out of the packet, as even at 50p each hook, its still not adequate, then because the point is so thin, after it touches a lump of gravel and burrs over, it has to be thrown away, and the whole stupid process is repeated. Etc etc etc.

No toy chucking here just trying to add some balance to your claims as they are clearly bias judging by the examples you have given.
You cant call out solely JB for over pricing when Bacarel a company you imply offer good value charge around the same for a similar amount of liquid.

I think John's flavours seem to get universal approval, especially on the quality, strength & freshness side of things.
This is ideal for those who like to make hook baits and different flavoured ones etc rather than paying for 100ml for each flavour and maybe not using it after trialling, even if they are over priced.
Even has the hook bait mixes as well.

John Baker is one of a rare breed. A man of integrity, a wealth of knowledge that he FREELY shares, a man who doesnt mess with his base mixes and who, in my opinion, is definitely one of the good guys.
He starts selling smaller samples so us anglers can try things out without spending a load of money. And he is slagged off for it.
People need to wake up to who really rips you off in this world...it isnt JB

Just multiplying the up the volume to get a comparative price per litre misses out on the other costs involved, not least of which will be the time spent getting the small quantity into the small bottle and labeling it, as well as the botte itself. I'm guessing that John does this by hand and it will be time consuming so there is the majority of your cost. If the flavour comes from the supplier in 5 litre containers, and you sell it in 100ml bottles, then that's 50 bottles to fill. If your flogging it in 10ml bottles, that's 500 bottles to fill. And just because its 10 times smaller doesn't mean you fill it 10 times quicker either. There is an extra cost there, and hence the cost per ml, or litre, is that much greater.

There is more that contributes to the cost of a product than simply the cost of raw materials. Rolling 10mm baits in any volume is a lot more time consuming and labour intensive. Probably a bit like selling 8ml flavours over 100ml bottles..
In his latest video John said he run out of 8ml bottles and had had to source some new ones. I would guess the price increase is linked to that.
Matt is right I've met john a few times he's a member of a lake I fish and he's a top man that makes bait for the love of it his day job pays the bills! He has no inclination in selling bait to anglers thst use 100kgs per year its aimed at bait enthusiasts who may not use as much bait and don't mind paying for quality

I cant see why people are complaining. The more choice you have the better for the consumer I would say.
I have watched his recent video's and have also listened to a podcast he did and he really seems a nice genuine bloke and its great that he is starting to share that knowledge on social media. Especially when he has such a brilliant passion for what he does.

I have used it for several seasons now after Matt made me some pops flavoured with JB Plum. It was almost a case of 'don't put the rod down'. Worked on every venue I took it to. Yes, it's expensive but at 1ml/kilo in freebies or half a ml per egg for custom hookbaits its very effective. Thanks, Matt!

I made afew different hookbaits/popups with JBs Plum, Caramell Banana and Pineapple Ester, using the recommended dosages for 1 egg mixes, using max 0.3ml. After drying, can´t smell anything
Not covid related, btw
Anyone else become noseblind, due to sniffing too much concentrated bait flavour, over time ???

I use JB Plum at 3ml in one of my popup mix's!
Another one I use it at 1ml alongside 4ml of another flavour and you still get the plum coming through.
0.3ml might be a little low in order to smell anything.
Doesn't mean it won't work of course.

I think his recommendations for hookbaits are in-line with his recommended levels for feed bait.
But yes, he definitely airs on the low side with things.
I probably should have said- my mix's are not to accompany a matching feedbait. I use them as singles or by a bed of unrelated feed bait so higher levels work better in this instance in my opinion.

Weirdly enough, I've just started using johns baits and to an extent I do agree with you.
However, with certain base mixes comes different flavours levels. I tried using the plum to the exact dosage as recommended (I was using mainlines Polaris mix for spring high viz singles) After constant experimenting I've found out for the Polaris, use x3 the recommend doesage.
I've also made some corkball pop ups using the supermilk and TM1 (x2 recommended dosage) can't smell the TM1 that much but there is a slight whiff of it. I did air dry them for 72 hours so probably a bit dry!! However it did get me thinking as per johns videos. These silt pigs have better noses than us, especially under water and the thought of an over powered bait really started to make me cringe, their natural food isn't full of sweeteners and all sorts?
I do agree with your point though to an extent , but I also disagree, I think different base mixes require different levels of flavour, for example the Polaris provides no nutritional value and the flavour is extremely concealed inside the skin of the boilie. The minute the boilie is broken it is very potent. I'm not expert in bait rolling and do not claim to be either as I've only recently just started, I'd agree with johns recommended dosage when making freebies. When making hook baits I'd say x2 the recommended dosage If the base mix is of nutritional value, eg supermilk, milk and honey and any other food source. For non nutritional base mixes eg Polaris or maybe even ccmoore I'd triple the dosage.
Happy to give you a hand as I've made some great pop ups in little time, feel free to pm me

Definitely concur about going nose blind after smelling flavours and making bait, usually until a family member walks through the front door and instantly protests to the apparent awful smell.
I'm sure John knows the general levels his flavours work best and has probably seen & heard many stories of more flavour = more bites kind of thing and a little less is more than likely better than over doing it.
That being said you do have to find the levels that work best on your waters.

That being said you do have to find the levels that work best on your waters.

Indeed it doesn't, it's not a ‘food source' such as a normal base mix e.g super milk, mainline cell etc. Difficult to explain.
Can't remember which video JB mentions this in so I'm going by his word

So it is made out of air? Because I cant imagine how it wouldnt have any nutritional value otherwise, especially if your idea of nutritional value is cell.

You definitely get noseblind after making bait.
My ex used to moan like heck about the house stinking if I made bait when she was out, even though I had cleaned up. Liver and Trigga was not the sweetest smell...
0.3ml is very low for a hookbait, I would think that is at a ratio intended for a foodbait hookbait. If for hookbaits only I would use the same quantity of flavour for a 1 egg mix as recommended for 6 eggs.
I honestly don't think proprietary pop-up mixes are particularly nutritious, although if you mix it with your standard base mix you will improve it; you then have the joy of trying to work out what quantity of pop-up mix to add to your base mix to get a pop-up.

In one of his recent videos he discusses hookbait making and says he didn't believe in his opinion that higher levels were needed. As such ,when he goes onto recommend a mix in the video, I interpreted that it was a "match the Hatch" standard recipe using 0.2ml
However he does say in many of the videos to go out and experiment for yourself to find what suits best

There's a video he creates some bait, he goes onto say about how he tried someone's bait and it didn't taste nice at all. And his bait tastes amazing. I don't fully understand the reasoning behind this as surely anything in a carps natural environment doesn't taste nice to us ? Cray fish, snails, bloodworm and many other things.
I admire the man and he's a pioneer but this didn't make sense to me at all. Surely a Carps pallet is nothing like ours. If we taste something as bitter to them it could be ideal. I no it's part of the whole sales pitch but it's basically saying anything other than nice tasting baits are useless.

Some interesting reading. I've had a couple of chats with him over the years, same as anybody can and if anybody plans on using his baits I would recommend that they do the same. The man was more than helpful and you get it straight from the horses mouth as they say which is perfect for me
I think he believes in the ultimate nutritional food bait, which is my preference and based on a carps sensitivity the flavour recommendations are based agains these, too much and they can have a repellent effect. If people want to try them at high levels and they work, so be it.
I have tried hook bait batches with higher levels to try and get a more instant approach and cannot honestly say it made much difference. Don't tell him though, I once talked about adding a couple of my favourite ingredients and he gave me a bollocking, don't mess with it!
If it's top quality ingredients you want, look no further, expensive but less can be more
Can't knock a man with a passion

There's some truth in that, I've used baits with no flavours added and compared them with baits that do and not noticed any increase in captures with the flavoured baits.
A good base mix will attract on it own, especially if not boiled for too long.
Same with the over flavoured hook baits

The flavor scene catches more anglers than carp and most of it is load of old bull especially when you can catch on plastics and foam

Exactly , I think flavours when used in a low nutrition bait help, but in a good nutritional bait they are nothing at all except expense.

There´s much more to flavours than smell. Look beyond "the sniff", and concentrate on the investigative triggers ... the organic acids, lactones, ketones, esters, phenols etc, that tickle the carps chemoreceptors. I use flavours for hookbaits/popups, and do agree, that u don´t need any flavour in your free offerings, provided your basemix ticks most of the boxes.
Proper flavours work, and do the job ... others just smell nice in the tub, gimmicks

That's the point isn't it
Everyone sniffs them, but you need to taste and look further. I said once before about a certain flavour test I did several years ago. We made a nice food bait and tried 10ml of a flavour per dry kg of basemix (stunk the van out with a kilo in a sealed bag), the fish loved it. Then 7ml, 5ml, 3ml........results the same every time. Because the good basemix and liquids were doing all the work. But as frank Warwick stated, when fishing singles he went crazy with flavour levels and they out catch the lower level versions.
My take on it is a good food bait is key to repetitive feeding but when I'm chasing fish with no freebies I want something with a bit more attractants in it. Also our versions of what is strong and what is weak is a wide open discussion

I have never used a bait that i have never tasted first.
And i have used some stinkers with some ingredients that'd make you spew.
Only by tasting can you get the full effect of the liquids, spices and enhancers and be able to better assess the levels.

I have a bait that has a nice fruity sweet taste to start with but leaves a bitter after taste due to high levels of liver and yeasts. The bait uses 10ml of a combination of flavours and essential oils. Caught everywhere and only used around 10-15 baits recently over a rod in really cold spell and the fish caught were passing the bait instantly so they obviously enjoyed it. To me it's slightly more bitter than I like to taste personally but I wouldn't alter it because it catches so well.

When I was a skint teenager, we used to use a soya/semo boilie with no colour or flavour, in the extremely muddy T&M canal... Put any freebies out and the bream would be a problem, so they were fished as single hookbaits, on the deck... Caught plenty like this, as location was spot on, but they still had to find the bait... To a human there was little smell or taste to it but the carp could find it easily enough, and with visibility/clarity at about 2” or so...
Subsequently, in later years we went on to fish Redesmere, where the high attract single “on the chuck” was a very popular and effective method, with all sorts of experimentation around flavours, levels and colours... I believe this is where Frank first started mucking around with the idea, and Trev's sold the little blister packs of fizz/harvest shortly afterwards... A million miles from those canal baits but it just shows that they'll find ‘em at either end of the spectrum - a really, really effective one is what we're after, however...

I've always had the thought that the base mix is the attractor and the flavour/attractant etc was just a label prob harking back to Fred Wiltons thinking . I go back to the days when we used ground up cat biscuits and trout pellets and no flavour and caught thousands of carp, i'm guessing John Baker has the same thinking process "less is more" perhaps we underestimate just how sensitive a fishes sensory organs are?
In reply to Post #92
There's plenty of flavour in ground up cat biscuits and trout pellets. Just not “strawberry” or any other flavour that carp anglers like 👍 I too am of the school of a flavour is just a label to differentiate from other anglers baits as back in day we all mostly used the same base mixes. Certain flavours though definitely attract on their own imho

Completely agree. Combine good flavour combos with the right colour and you have something that will get bites when fishing over bait fails

If you look mate he now does small bags of base mix with added egg albumen what he is selling as hookbait mixes. They may be sieved,? You would have to call him and find out, plus he will give you all the advise you need, including flavour selection and levels etc
Start with flavour combinations and it really is down to the angler, and if the fish like it
So in summary, a hook bait mix and flavours, he may recommended an hydroslate too etc

Catching a fish on a homemade bait/hookbait will give you a far greater sense of achievement than any shop or web sold bait, from a cost perspective you've paid for a pot the base mix + additives would have provided multiple pots different shapes and buoyancy.

Different concept. With air b n b, the supply is limited by the quantity of property. The only limiting factor here is 8ml glass bottles, not the contents. Equivalent of £500 a litre now (including the bottle obviously...).
Good flavours without a doubt though, some of them.

We will have to agree to disagree then.
I guess the point that others and myself are making, is really, how much is too much for an 8ml sample bottle?
Perhaps I'm just thinking back to going into Reading Angling in the mid 80s and buying a 50ml bottle of Catchum flavour for £1.50 though!

What do you who are saying it is “profiteering” feel is an acceptable price for these ?
My take on it is he knows what the flavours cost to make per batch, let's say 10L so knows what the cost per ml is, cost of bottle is, time it takes to fill said bottle and what he wants to make out of it to make it worth his while (nothing wrong with this and this is how business works)
When he first done the 8ml samples everything was taken into account. Cost of flavour, bottle, time and profit. He came up with the price of £2.50 per 8ml bottle and they sold out straight away. Now realising how popular they are the price has increased over 50% 🤷🏻♂️ This is profiteering in my eyes just the same as you getting an Uber home from the pub every Friday for £10 but New Years Eve the same trip is now £50. Did the cost of fuel, time etc all of a sudden 5x
I'm sure if a tackle company bought out a new bivvy for £500 and on the second batch it was £750 there would be plenty to be said about it

Not really as that's the price they have decided they want for their product, it's then up to the consumer to decide if they want it or not
Regarding these flavours in particular, the cost has gone from £2.49 to £3.50 to £3.95 in a couple of weeks. Now if cost of ingredients have gone unexpectedly in these last couple of weeks then fair enough. But if you are just raising your prices to see what you can get away with because your product is popular (like the uber example) then that's just a piss take
Not wanting to single out John in particular and in no way knocking what he does as I think we can all agree he's one of the best at what he does. But he was obviously happy with his margins at £2.49 but then upped the price to £3.50 and now £3.95 plus the £3.85 postage

Or he really undervalued the length of time it was going to take to decant and label and a pain on the arris to send out all these little bottles with the queues at the post office.
Or the fact that the price of the bottles may have shot through the roof to purchase from the suppliers
Wait until the next lot of tackle comes through on the slow boat and see the costs then lol

But surely as an already established business he has his cost of product per ml nailed down, cost of bottles nailed down, time to fill the bottles nailed down. That's how he came to the price of £2.49?
Or are you telling me a businessman just guessed at £2.49 hoping he was right and now realising he is wildly out of the ball park so upped his prices

Not necessarily
I bet he has to bottle it all by hand as he isn't automated
I've seen some of the queues outside the post office waiting to post stuff.
The pandemic shut down has exaggerated this because people are still buying stuff on the internet
Like I said wait until the next slow boat comes in and see what you will be paying for stuff then
This is the tip of the iceberg
It's all about whether you want to pay it or not.
How much is a 50mm bottle of mulberry florentine or autumn fizz going for
That's profiteering lol

The bottling by hand argument is irrelevant.
If he bottles by hand he bottles by hand. This would of all been costed in to the original price of £2.49. The argument of the slow boat from China is also relatively mute as he doesn't import his flavours from China and re package. Like I've said before I'm not knocking him or his products
But..... let's say he decides to go down the 8ml bottle route at 10 bottles per flavour at £2.49 and they take 2 years to shift. Is the next lot of 8ml bottles coming out at more than the first lot? I'd say no. This is down to pure greed in the fact the first lot of 8ml flavours sold out straight away so now pushing the price to see what people will pay and that price will now be the new price
Again go back to a tackle manufacturer bringing out a bivvy for £500, let's say 100 units, them
100 units are gonna make a profit. If them 100 units took 2 weeks to sell and the next 100 bivvys were being sold at £750 there would be a stink. If the original 100 units took 2 years to shift do you think the next 100 units would be priced at £750?

Brilliant for his business short term just hope it don't come back to bite him. He'll price him self out. Every flavour I've used from catchit labs has been just as good at the recommend level and holds in the bait when boiled. A lot cheaper and does the job as good.
Hello , I bought JB flavour CRAB but my boilies don't smell.
I increased dosage 2ml/ 2 eggs but the same problem.
I tried steaming/ 20 mm - 10 min / and boiling/90 second/ but the problem still continues.
Any idea how to solve it ?
Sorry for my english language.
Thanks.
