I'm afraid people will though!

Like everything in carpfishing it has been exploited to death and people are trying to make a living from it, that's where its all gone wrong. . Don't get me wrong there is a natural progression where someone makes a special bait with expensive ingredients in it, then there is obviously quite a bit more cost involved than a pop up mix with a few flavors in it commercially rolled.

What we can all see with bait over the years is that it comes in trends, generally targeted at the sheep. Good quality brands that catch fish hang around for a reason, they catch fish, others just come and go in cycles.

Bait ingredients have risen and risen but when you look at the cost of say 5kg of bottom baits which will be filled with half decent ingredients, nothing has escalated like the pop up, minimal input and maximum output. You are not messing around rolling tons of food source baits at a cost either. The flip side, anyone can jump on the bandwagon and try to charge a premium, that's what's happening sadly, and that's what wrong, spanking anglers again for their own greed, it also leaves the flood gates open for people to charge what they want regardless of the product quality or effectiveness, the only filter is the users and results where the vast majority will no doubt find the bin after a few sessions.

The good news, if they are inferior they will soon be out of business so you could say its a vicious circle, here today, gone tomorrow, simple for me, don't buy them. Ultimately the concluding factor is how much you are really willing to pay.

Just seen a small video Jim Rawcliffe put up talking about these pop ups. He reckons he was constantly being asked to bring them back out again. He went onto mention that they wouldn't be cheap due to the time and effort to produce and the cost of the ingredients.

I thought. OK.. another £20 pot of hookbaits. Plenty out there charging that.. I nearly hit the floor when I searched them out on Ebay. A few quid short of £60 a pot.. What's in them, gold dust.. he mentioned one of the ingredients has a habit of lingering for days. I'm thinking Fenugreek, could be wrong. Is it an expensive ingredient, I don't know.

" More takes " I'd want them crawling up the rods for that money

A bit like saying there’s robin red in these wonder baits you could have 100kg of dry mix and then add a table spoon of RR does that now mean every single bait has a decent amount RR in it ?

I would pay these ridiculous prices too old hat for all this nonsense

£2 a boilie basically. 😇

60p a hook,

£3 a lead,

20p hook-length

£1 all the extra nonsense bits.

£2 leadcore/leader length.

Fuming when that lot goes straight in the tree from the cast. 😭😭😡😀

Hopefully the market will decide and some sense will prevail.

Stoogleman has not taken kindly to this!

He is looking to get rid of the customers who are re-selling his baits.

Good on him. And shame on the tw@ts who are sticking them on E-bay.

If you don't put it in the right place. It may as well be in a tub on the mantlepiece. Some muppets think money can buy experience better off spending time on the bank. Watching what the people who catch regularly are doing. Discretely of course, unless you really want a flat nose.

Carp Anglers have been losing the plot for decades. Driving miles just to bait up in the dark hoping no ones in the swim come Friday 😱..snorkeling rigs out..bonkers.
With premium hookbaits what people pay for is confidence essentially..but for me that confidence can also be achieved with a 2p bit of bread.

not just fishing, airgun parts actually sell for silly money too, 5 years ago you could buy a complete Theoben Rapid for 600-700 but the parts would sell for 1k plus, after lock down the complete guns were selling for 1k and parts listings on ebay still matched or exceeded tbat.

We’re living in the world of “Instant Gratification”.

Debt - buy anything instantly.
Plastic surgery - change your face and body instantly.
Lose weight - chemicals to make you thin instantly.
Big muscles - take steroids to get big instantly.

Everything is being sold as instant just to make money and most people don’t want to put any effort in to anything nowadays, including critical thinking, so they’ll lap these scams up.

Delayed gratification is only understood by those willing to educate themselves.

A fool and his money are easily parted.

Anyone seen Scott Edwards is gearing up to release his ECU Neptunes Perils hookbaits?

Extensively tested (by himself) and the 31 testers he’s sent freebies to.

On release, £21.99 for 35 baits or £11.99 for 18.

Same as the bait room pop ups and wafters he stopped selling them made an excuse named anglers were catching on them but he weren’t getting the recognition so stopped selling them . Then people started selling them for stupid money a pot on ebay . He then cottoned onto it and restarted selling then again at £45 a pot and people are willing to paying it

The baits have (supposedly) been tested against the tester’s best hookbaits and have out-fished them pretty much every time. Would like to see one go up against a specialized hookbait.. bet they haven’t though.

I see David Preston is entering the hook bait market with Barely Legal. Not the best at presenting imo, and not sure why it's revolutionary, but good luck to him.

I watched this recently and the term "legend in his own mind" was my first thought.

He basically gassed about a lot of nothing and presented nothing new or revolutionary except for the name of a wonder product that he didn't elaborate on at all to justify calling it that. Nor did he prove that the claim the entire bait industry are trying to get him banned.

Best of luck to him, will be taking some solid proof to get me to look again.

He's a very shrewd businessman and has his name to arguably the biggest match fishing brand in the world, amongst other very successful companies. This is however, IMO, complete toilet. Fjuka baits, at least the match baits I've seen, are very poor and they never seem to be taken very seriously. I highly doubt these will last....

I wouldnt want to go fishing without pots of baitroom baits. Since using them ive seen a huge difference. For about 5 years every single big fish from my syndicate came on baitrooms. Nothing else came close. I only use baitroom, stogleman and specialised hookbaits. I wouldnt even think about using anything else.
I cant understand why people think a hookbait isnt worth £1 but a reel is worth £600.. which one catches fish?
£45 for 60 baits... if i catch more than one fish over 35lb using that pot I deem it worth it. If I catch a few fish over 35lb then how can that not be worth £45? Especially if ibe gone through 20kikos of bait in a session. You start adding up how much everything costs youll find £45 is a drop in the ocean so to speak..

How do you decide which one to use? I'm trying to cut my Specialised collection down to just one of each colour (a pink, white, yellow and OG) in balanced and popups and that's too many!

£45 for a tub of pop ups... I want them to suck and **** me for that money!.. just had a look at bait rooms site. Some look great. But 45 squid for some of them which are just a decent pop up nothing more, is not on in my opinion. But dont knock people who buy them. Some poeple got money you know... if I was earning more I probably would buy them. Just cant justify it personally. I know people who eat 50 quid fillet steaks every day because why not.. just not sustainable for me
23 quid a pot for specialized... from what I've seen from him on here on his operation is an absolute bargain compared to baitroom. Can see why they are so popular.

The bait room success story is one of the most ridiculous in fishing. It’s bloody successful but just occasionally something so bonkers happens - the emperor’s clothes moment.

He sold very good hookbaits for the going rate about £15 if memory serves me.
He started to get the hump because his baits were successful but claims names were catching and a accrediting other companies.
He got the hump, sort of understandable but if you have a product and margin and sell out faster than you can make then - I would say apart from ego what’s the issue?
After his tantrum and shutting up shop - he sees the eBay prices of his £15 pop ups.
Decides to start making again the very same pop ups but treble the price.

As I say - successful and hats off but I would say

The reason the price trebled was not because the baits got better, or the ingredients went up but jealousy of ebayers attaining prices on his hard work.
He stopped in the first place, because morally he didn’t like that people claimed other companies baits instead of his - I get this but an extra £30 a tub to sell your morals? Strange.

You then get the likes of specialized baits, who are I what I would think is topy regards price BUT like few other companies he has a strategy - that it takes time, top quality ingredients and he wants a margin and has people to pay. I pick Mark because I trust his story more than any magic bean seller. I have used and will continue on occasions to use sb- when situations dictate- I also have 100% confidence in another commercially available hook bait that is priced similarly- I trust the baits, all batches seem the same, they are a small stable range and I believe they will be a Available next year and the one after.

Where I think some people get muddled is the latest concoction of airball baits and essentially lures, I subscribe to the school that says if it tastes good and is actually accepted then it makes fishing far easier.

I am not one to normally get involved in a hook bait debate, but I have used many hook baits over the years and have caught fish on all of them and blanked on all of them.
The main theme of this thread is about the cost of hook baits. In particular there are comments regarding the cost of The Baitroom products compared to others.
I have mostly Specialized Hookbaits tubs, a few Handcraft tubs and a couple of tubs from the Baitroom, the latter of which are many years old. I can't say one has performed better than the other or in fact better than many of the cheaper options on the market supplied by the main boilie producers(Which could just be my lack of angling skills, waters I fish or limited bank time)

So to put some perspective around the cost, The Baitroom tubs are £45 + postage and you get around 60 baits and a booster bottle and Specialized hookbaits you get around 30 baits for £23 + Postage, so in terms of cost per bait, they are about equal.

So better to compare cost per hook bait than cost per tub.

The mere i fish is upto 45ft deep and I regularly catch from around the 25-30 ft deep mark. The specialised dont popup a rig in that depth (i only use the crushed cork) and the 13mm baitrooms dont last long. The 15mm baitrooms do what I need them to do in that depth for 24hrs+. The wafters he makes are amazing as well.

Just a genuine query - I fish a natural Mere and it’s 6’ at it deepest. By description Meres are a shallow area of ground which got flooded either naturally or artificially but are in realty big, shallow puddles, often unapproachable from the banks due to dense reed beds and mangrove like tree roots requiring platforms and walkways to actually get near the water.

Not for one moment trying to diss your pop up argument but as a long time Mere fisherman just querying your Mere description. There is the more pertinent argument that as Meres are large shallow expanses, usually all reed and tree lined, that silt is the biggest angling challenge, thereby bringing Hookbait effectiveness into one of the forefront considerations?

I’ve avoided this for obvious reasons. I saw the Jim Protavit liver pop ups. Someone sent it to me. I get sent so much stuff now on a daily basis that makes people who know the truth toes curl. That was a great bait back in the day. But he could not sell it in the end. Because of what's being spoken about in this thread, it's suddenly £50 a tub. But everyone is doing the same now. It's no different to what so many others are doing. I am so ashamed of it all. It’s my life work now. Twenty five years ago, when I was the only sod using what would become named the Sugars2… I never dreamed that one day I would be selling them. Or that so many people opening up hook bait companies would be trying to emulate them.

They came from realness. The same cannot be said for most of the others. I made the hook baits for myself for many years. Smashed everywhere with them that I ever fished, to the maximum. Proper pits, fished by the best carp anglers around. Not lakes with 1500 big carp in ffs. So many comments said it was just me as a great angler. It was not, I had something very REAL & very different. Something which brought VERY different results to everybody else. Eventually friends started doing the same with ones which were given to them, or blagged. Eventually some of the best carp anglers in the country were telling me that I had something that changed EVERYTHING. That I had to go to market with it. People/friends convinced me to start selling them. From the first moment they went on sale, they were turning over the best lakes in the country. INSTANTLY for the users. Instantly. So much so that after they blew the Krill out of the water on Roach Pit, Sticky wanted me to go work with them and formulate what would become the Manilla. All after just five minutes. Any of that happening with those trying to rip us off? The 'curers'? Of course not. There was one other dedicated hook bait company. The hook baits were only so effective, because of the process I had come up with a decade before. Through obsession to catch more than everyone else. I stupidly referred to that as ‘CURING’. It was something that I came up with, so I sort of had to give it a name when we started selling them. I can’t even use that stupid word anymore. The photo below is an Insta post from two days ago. Look at the hashtags. Every company being mentioned on this thread pretty much is using that word ‘curing’. Despite NEVER having a single clue what it is that we are even doing. Only what I allow to go out there into the public. There is absolutely zero respect from any of these people. Just vultures. Do you think that anyone who tells you that they are 'curing' under those circumstances, really has much clue what they are even talking about? I personally know 100% that they do not have a clue. But why would they even need to do that in the first place? Ask yourself that. It's to sell, mainly to novices and people who know no better. When we released the Garlic, we had to take our website down for three months to complete the orders. When the website went back up, it took an incredible amount of money. Certain people watched that and it instantly became the new way to sell pop ups for some. That’s all real above from our side. From day one we have so many sponsored anglers from the biggest bait firms using our stuff, whilst being paid & promoting something else. So many hook bait companies now, are run by people who fished on the same lakes as me, and saw what the hook baits did. The list is crazy. Saw the effect that they had. So they wanted to emulate that. That's all good. But there ends the respect. Their hook baits were dreamed up instantly out of thin air, looking at someone else. Me. None of that is actually real though. We live in a social media age, where new hook bait & bait companies will give punters free stuff to shift kit on social media. To go on bait groups or forums and make comments to sell their bait. The companies are open about it. So be very wary of anything you read online. Photos of big carp with normal blokes are far more effective & far less demeaning. We currently have two long term ex customers for our Garlics, who purchased them for years & you would never know. They are now selling Cured/Garlic/Fermented/Honey hook baits. Only because we wrote that on our website. Get it? You lot are just getting scammed. Ali enters the bait game, he's instantly 'curing' card board pop ups. It has taken us far longer than it should have to get the stuff 'out there' to the masses, because of all of this ‘noise’. I’m told by people far more knowledgable than me, that it is normal if you are seen to be doing well in carp fishing. It’s got so tragic now. You see the hook baits actually being formulated on social media last week… Then this week they are the best thing since sliced bread. All so desperate to get something off the ground. Good luck to EVERY single one of them. Honestly I mean that. But nothing whatsoever great long term comes from copying other people. Nothing at all. There is ZERO respect within carp fishing. Everyone is ripping everyone else off in all genres. I can’t even use the words ‘cured’ anymore. Imagine that. This is not bits of Chinese plastic that can be copied with ease. But on social media, people can build a crowd and copy a format, copy some words. It’s so sad for carp fishing in general. None of it is really real. Carp anglers are so desperate to become ‘famous’, they will back these people hoping it will go somewhere for them personally. They are just getting used essentially. That’s carp fishing now. It makes me really ashamed of it all, including what has happened regarding the entire hook bait situation. There are literally now 100’s of companies. All dog eat dog, creating crap on socials. It’s why I steer clear of socials 99% of the time. I can’t even speak about bait no more publicly, or my words just end up on someone else’s website. In someone else's spiel. Over & over again.

The challenge has ALWAYS been there from me for the past couple of years. Any of these blokes/companies, get £50k, £20k, or even £10k together. We will have yours and my money put into escrow. We will go somewhere to fish singles, I will use my hook baits, you will use your hook baits. I will blow you out of the water & take your money. You know this better than anyone really. So no one wants to take that offer. That offer above is open to ABSOLUTELY anyone within carp fishing selling/promoting hook baits. So that's EVERYONE or ANYONE. Talk is so cheap.

Sorry I mean dont work for me in that depth. Not ever caught on a sb popup in those depths. Fished next to a br one the only rod to ever go for me is the br. The balanced bottom baits sb have been amazing for me this season so far. I have about 4 different flavour & colours of the sb cc pops and ive caught on them on another lake which is 8ft depth maximum. Ive had a pot of Cork ball pops from sb for years and ive never had a touch on them on the deeper water in god knows how many years of trying them. Nothing is exactly laboratory conditions when fishing but you know when something just doesnt work for you. Got alot of confidence on the sb baits. Just not in deep water for me.

A kettlehole mere in Shropshire is a deep sided lake formed through glacier deposits. The meres in Cheshire are mostly shallow (?) and the ones in Shropshire are for the most part deeper. The Mere, Crosemere, Colemere, Blakemere, Newton mere, Bomere all have depths over 30ft.
The Cheshire ones are for the most part shallow although I know there are deeper ones.
The subject of what makes a Mere is different in different counties if im correct? There used to be many arguments years ago about what is a "proper" mere on other forums I rememeber. Haha. Used to get alot of people riled up which is strange for carp anglers 😂
I maybe talking complete ***** but ive looked online and the one I fish is a kettle hole mere made by glacial deposits. 🤷🏼

I think I know which water you mean if the sand quarry (PA water?) is in relation to my reference but im talking about another water not far away. If you dont mean my comment im sorry 👍 but thats called a mere as well for some reason youre right. What makes a mere and what doesnt can cause murders between Anglers haha.

A good reply to a genuine question.👍

It was prompted by your profile saying Cheshire and as you say, Cheshire Meres tend to be shallow.

The main inference I was thinking of was if meres were shallow and reed/tree lined = silt then hookbaits are a big deciding factor.

As stated genuine query, not arsey comment 🙂

My local club here in Essex refer to all their stillwaters as 'meres', and they're a mix of gravel pits and farm reservoirs. I've always found it a bit odd.

Used to be some proper arguments i remember off an old forum. "Thats not a mere" "thats not a real mere" blah blah. Alot of dicks in carp fishing as we all know and even a Wikipedia post proving them wrong doesnt do it.
Murders was used figuratively not literally

I was using your 'murder' scenario as a segue to try and inject my attempt at humour - the play on the word 'mere' 😉 👍
