Although not exactly 'tackle' ,we should not forget the Fred Wilton and the development of the boily,
When the harder / tougher HNV theory baits came to everyone's attention and coupled with the hair rig ,it really was then mainstream carp angling began..
Or,as some say 'carp industry ' ,a word ,although significant i not like..

I keep things really simple..
Im of the generation of 35mm users ,so your essentially taking selfies blind ,for that i used a Zuiko 50mm standard lens ,with a OM40 or OM10 body, the OM10 was great..
What's that got to do with self catch shots today ,I hear the cry !!
Well 35 mm taught me a lot ,one is i watch 'the others ',most, not all make it hard for themselves ..
Always make sure the main light source is behind the camera/photographer..,that way you can account for shadows as the light source will move/change as does the day
Try to watch you don't have a telegraph pole sticking out of yr head in the shot and account for flash drop off,ie make sure you have a structure behind you,..
I still use a simple 4 thirds g3 mirror less dslr, but for convience and less stuff,I like a camera phone ,I just use a mono spiral bankstick by dinsmores,a cheap 1.50 phone holder, that's it,...I use the 10 second timer ,on the front facing camera hit the white button ,lift prize ,some times I'll take one with flash ,one without flash ..,and pic the best ..
That's what I do,and I've been to photographic college in londistan ,and had my own little wedding photo business..a few years ago
