What about when ABU made the best carp reels? When did that stop, was it when the Baitrunners came out?
Also in the same era, Tricast, North Western and Sportex rods, are they still in business?

Sportex are still for sale in Germany I think. No idea if they are any good? I think Rod Hutchinson is still an active brand on the continent also.

Yeah sportex still active. I only discovered them recently when I was offered a sales rep rod at a good discount

That was probably my ACE post, however, absolutely. Angling Intelligence. I still every now and again use my 60" AI traditional brolly (pictured) what a piece of kit, 12 years old and still in mint condition!

What happened to your aluminium boss it came with?
The only fault with them was no solid front panel but thankfully you can bring it low enough to keep everything out.

No idea, mine just came with a blanking nut on a black spreader block. Leaked badly one night last year, so took bell unit off and sealed with silicone and fabisilled this spring. Have got a zip on front that I picked up for a tenner on fb marketplace....

Chub, Greys and JRC are still about but a real shadow of their former selves. I went in the hardy greys (pure fishing) HQ last year and the JRC and Chub stuff is awful generic chinese stuff. JRC used to be absolute quality.

Vardis are still going, mainly via salesmen on facebook. Not as active as they were.
AI transformed in Colne Valley Tackle or something like that.

PDQ,Pegley Davis ...I had a lovely 12ft match rod with similar translucent blanks to a Shakespeare polystel match,but it also had Fuji alike ,triple match guides,but in brown with out the luminous centres..

Correct Keith, David Hunt owned Fishrite, I worked for him in one of the lovely old Leigh cotton mills from 2004-2008, worked at BAS Bolton for a while before that and met you several times in the shop, once I remember when Frank Warwick had come to pick up some of your magnetic indicator heads.. We did shows all over UK and tradeshows in Europe and had some great times . We had some good products (and some rubbish ones from before my time, I did try to weed them out!) I'd say 2005-2007 was the peak, but in fairness it was competitive and all the good stuff were variations on a theme from the same China factories as many other UK brands..

There was a unused John wilson, masterline Travel avon quiver,on ebay couple of days ago,went for £127..plus postage..
I see complete old skool course set ups sometimes for sale,obviously at one time someone's set up and pride n joy,and they have passed on..
The oldest reel I have is a Nottingham Starback in wood and brass,it still has remnants of silk line on it...
As far as I know ,no one has mentioned Steadfast, I had a lovely canvas stead fast 45inch brolly I got my wife to sew Nashy stormsides on it...

My Parson's did me proud on Spring Pool Vince, a friend who's a manager at Angling direct has my set now.

That's a terrific call Keith, I still have my Powerplus Professional bivvy which has got to be about 30 years old, doesn't need fabsil either as it has an inner rubber liner.....bit embarrassed to still have hold of it, cant have used it from new more than a dozen times, a bit of an antique

Fishrite and badger, nearly all my gear was made up of this as a kid, good old Dad.
I know they're still about but does any one use one of those Nash speed load ruck box things? Used to see them all over Bantons/Wyre back in the day, always wanted one.

Lol. The one piece and SkeTex were the dress code of the day. Took ages to get used to the boots as they don't come in left or right. Was thinking of wearing the SkeTex this weekend 😁

I remember Andy Little Bivies and Dam reels - I had some North western rods for a while - they use do the kevlite which was similar to the armalite from what i can remmeber.

Silstar gxb 40,50,and 60..only they came out similar time ish to btrs,and were made to call their reels baitfeeders,not baitrunners,as shimano got a bit cross with them..

Mate of mine had a Dam Andy Little stalking rod, think it was a 2lb test curve. Boy did that handle some fish, often caught at very short range in some parrot cage swims.
Badger aluminium goalpost rod pod, one of the few decent items they made, I picked one up at a 5 Lakes show, it lasted for years, come to that with a decent bed bedchair as well.
I think the Pure Fishing group own Normark and Abu now, along with Rapala.

Interline rods,made by Daiwa..
Used to great effect by someone I know a tad well,...he had the 12ft 2.5tc...but,isn't there always a but ,they had a inherent problem with line initially not easy to re thread,or was it a pole threader leader issue ,can't remember, but 120 ,plus twenties later they worked...lol..

Used to great effect by someone I know a tad well,...he had the 12ft 2.5tc...but,isn't there always a but ,they had a inherent problem with line initially not easy to re thread,or was it a pole threader leader issue ,can't remember, but 120 ,plus twenties later they worked...lol..

My first casting tool was a DAM Des Taylor in 2 1/4tc, proper weapon that was at the time, remember straightening a a hook out with it, lost a nice fish of around 12lb

I've still got my DAM Andy Little 12 foot 2 1/4 rods. Great for flatter fishing and small waters. Lovely for playing fish.

The original quick fold down net, weighed about 4.5 tonnes if I remember correctly and that was before you got it wet!

What about the Rod Hutchinson (I think) bedchair/rucksack cover. Basically added a ruck sack onto the back of a stanard sun lounger, good bit of kit that was.

That takes me back - first reel was an Intrepid Black Prince. I seem to recall that the bail arm didn't have a roller and the line would eventually cut a groove and snap.
Got a Gallion 12R after that to go on my Pegley-Davis carp rod - all bought from the Anglers Den in Gillingham.

I've got more than a passing interest in Mitchell reels,..anyway Galion reels were made and marketed by Mitchell..

I still use Mitchell to this day,one very special reel given to me by Ruggles,on here who has passed and another version garcia Mitchell 300..
So people think the 300 series are the same as I have a 1956,version 5,....3.0.0..these are much nicer than later versions in my humble opinion..I'm a user,not a collector, I believe tackle should be used,some others are pure collector, and they just sit in a box..

I had some hand me down stuff from my granddad years ago, wicker basket, reels as mentioned, an old brown Daiwa reel too, tried to find one since and cannot, I also had some split cane rods, one with a fibreglass tip which I used for a while until the handle broke
Mitchell's were a bit of a game changer, remember my mate getting his first one, nice and smooth and the line lay was superb at the time

Great fun, but you have to be much more careful – no line clips on the spools, line very prone to going behind the spools if you dare to allow any slack, and the clutches are bloody terrible! But that's all part of the appeal for using vintage gear.

My first fixed spool was a Mitchell with a claw bale arm. I was aged 5 and this was given to me along with a three piece cane rod (the tip section was glass) after my dad purchased me a fishing kit from woolies that had a solid cane rod, a clickety tin fixed spool, yellow cotton line (no not braid), a bubble float and a hook about 2/0. My old man knew zilch about angling whereas my grandad (know locally a Popeye due to his size, a bailiff for the BAA on the Worcester - Birmingham canal around Alvechurch) knew alot. The area around Birmingham was the crucible of english match fishing in the 60's, Ken Giles lived just up the road whilst the brilliant Sheila Morton lived nearby too. I spent three weeks in the summer holiday every year there and loved it.
Anyway I took this fishing kit up to my Grandads having used it once only on my local Hawley lake and somehow caught a small Perch. My old man took me and couldn't wait to go back home. We got to Alvechurch and my old many told me to show my Grandad my new fishing gear which I was truly dreading. I got it out and showed it to him. Without a word he took it from me, beckoned to my dad that he follow him and they went out of the door. I never saw that junk again. My old man never mentioned fishing ever again and I had carte blanche to get on my bike and go wherever I wanted to.
My grandad then gave me this rod and reel which I used for a number of years. I wish I knew what had happened to that reel. The following day we went to Redditch where he stocked me up on proper line, hook to nylon, shot etc.
One of the best things of this interchange was what happened to my dad. There he was, 6ft of muscle (ex Royal Marine, ex SBS) looking very sheepish with this tiny man built out of matchsticks. Small he may have been but he was a tough bugger - invalided out of WW1 with gas poisoning at Ypres in 1915 - he was in the RGA, smoked roll ups his entire life and died aged 83. Legend. Still have some of the floats he used to make somewhere. He just loved his Roach fishing.
Many of the manufacturers names from that period are almost forgotten I reckon. The tackle shop in Redditch was an Aladdin's cave. The nearest I ever came across after that was the original Raisons in Park Rd Farnborough that had so much old gear it was a museum. Fabulous. The sport lost a lot when these establishments modernised in my opinion. You could visit these places and see so much mad gear. The Tippet float springs to mind and another one that informed you you had had a bite after the event so if you had to take a call of nature, when you returned you could see very clearly something had happened. Daft but fun.

Mitchell's for me too, 300 and then 410.
I've just started using some old rods (Tony Fordham carbon Kevlar 1lb test) and they still have the matchsticks that I taped to the butts as rudimentary run clips to stop those Mitchell's back winding!!

Mitchell and Abu reels were great and top of my Christmas list when I was younger. I still use reels from both for a range of fishing (including a wonderful Abu multiplier for sea trips)
Bought a lovely new Mitchell recently too.

Brilliant that was...I've fished up in Redditch a couple of times,on a pool known as Boeley Mill,, a little oasis..
Redditch as most of a certain age would know was the hub of the tackle industry at one point..
