Long time follower of this forum and this is my first post.
Given recent developments and seeing that anglers can finally go back to the bank, it got me thinking about the desire to take up carp fishing again.
I haven't been fishing for around two years now. This was coupled with a bad break up with the ex and having all my stuff nicked from my garden shed. I was absolutely gutted. Years of equipment gone. But I remember at the time, I didn't want to replace it, as I had enough of angling.
I had enough of the Danny Fairbrass-esque crew, turning up to fisheries with their wide-boy attitude, being loud, abrasive and general condescending attitude. I couldn't have a 48 hour fishing trip, without experiencing some form of "Sonik rods mate?" or "You know you should probably invest in big pit reels mate.." whilst fishing a standard sized lake.
Loud, boozy and blatant cocaine users.
Fishermen are private creatures by nature, it's why we take up the sport, but I'm not adverse to having a chat with a fellow angler by any means. Hell, I'll talk about anything, doesn't even have to be fishing. I also get it can be quite social and we want to go with friends, as do I. But I wouldn't dream of behaving the way some of these guys do.
What I couldn't ever get my head around was the influx of this type of angler. They'd be in the tackle shop, being unnecessarily loud about how much they'd spent and that "the missus won't be 'appy!". I went to Cherpont in France a few times and I'm sure I shared the entire lake with them on each trip.
My reason for the unnecessary rant, is I wonder if anyone else has the same views I guess? I've sat around today wondering do I make a sincere investment in getting some equipment back and hitting the banks again, but I'm having some morale dilemmas as to whether I'm likely to experience this environment again.

The negatives only exist if you acknowledge them. I've been carp fishing for nearly 25 years and I love it as much now as I did the first time I went. I just ignore all the b*llocks I dont like. Problem solved.
It's not going to get any better. Ignore it and enjoy some fishing. Or focus on the negatives and hate it.

I was exactly the same, can't stand what has become in modern carp angling, I avoid day tickets like the plague, around 2015 I stopped fishing in the UK all together, surviving on to trips a year to a stunning French water where none of the crap you've described takes place.
I then had a chance encounter with an angler from my past, he asked if I was doing much fishing, I told him just the 2 trips a year to France, I explained that I just couldn't find a place to fish that got the fire going, luckily he had just started a small syndicate on some special lakes and asked if I'd like to have a look, that was 2018, I now have 2 syndicates, one for spring/summer/autumn and one for the winter, luckily the fire is back, for me I needed to find the right place to fish and I'm happy in my angling again, hope you can do the same.. 👍

For what it's worth, I won't go near a busy circuit water these days. Quiet waters for smaller fish for me nowadays - took a bit of readjusting at first, but I love it now and almost always enjoy it.
Don't have much time with work and the nippers, so the chance of nabbing a 20 or something a bit bigger if I'm really lucky on a worknight or early morning trip does for me 👍🏻

I'm with you on this, as said, find the right water and it will come good. I'll fish anywhere these people aren't even if they're on the fish. I go to get away from the idiocracy, not having plankton barge into my swim asking "woss in 'ere ven mate?". I tell them giraffes and tigers, they look suitably baffled.

Some carp video's can be a bit "bosh" but as long as I can get something out of them, I'm happy to put up with it.
I think that your problem isn't fishing as such but what life has thrown at you, your break up and the theft of your tackle. We are living in uncertain times with the Corona Virus and most people would probably consider themselves "less happy" than a few months ago. Unfortunately divorces, bankruptcy and depression rates will probably go through the roof. Take stock of what you have and look for positives, ranting and bringing other people down isn't the best way forward.

There are "chavs" everywhere you go, at the football, in the pub, at the supermarket, work etc, why should fishing be immune to having its share? I'm sure we would all prefer the Mr Crabtree days but unfortunately that aint life now....
So it's a case of accepting it for what it is, tolerate/ignore what you don't like about life and getting on with your own stuff or letting it get to you and stopping you enjoying what you like. I know what my choice is...

I can tell you from first hand experience that they are decent lads. Damien Clarke has a ticket for the same water as me, he also fishes another water with friends of mine. Guess what. No issues. Adam Penning (yes I know he's not at Korda anymore) has the same ticket as me. Guess what. No issues. Paul Harris I know from his time on the road, good lad who I've offered to fish with me on another one of my waters, which I sure as hell wouldn't do if he was a chavy bellend. Ali and Tom I've spoken to at length at shows and guess what, they are decent lads as well.
There's a lot of *****s in this world. In all walks of life. Unfortunately some of them will be anglers. But that's nothing to do with Danny Fairbrass or Korda. That business has ploughed more back into our hobby than probably any other one in the history of carp fishing. Have you got any idea how much of his own money Danny has spent otter fencing club waters for free or at cost, for clubs that couldn't afford them, to secure the fishing for people he's probably never even met.

I agree. I rarely fish day tickets but I've done plenty of time on circuit waters and I don't really see these idiots that people refer to. It makes you wonder about the folks that claim to come across these guys all the time. I question the social skills of these guys and wonder if it's just a complete lack of tolerance towards others?
One of the best things about carp fishing, for me, is the diversity of personalities you meet. From the young lads full of enthusiasm with all the lingo to the old boys doing it on the quiet. Cops, robbers, builders, lawyers, pot heads and full timers. United by a love of carp fishing. 99.9% of them are sound and I feel sorry for anyone that is unable to focus on anything other than the remaining 0.01%.

Firstly I am not a carp angler, I'm an angler that very occasionally fishes for them. I am an all round river angler, and not particularly good either
If you despair at the sort of angler and venue you mention, why not try river fishing for carp. I help out on some Facebook groups and one is for river carp. I quite often see pictures of some stunning fish and have yet to see one of them actually giver a name. The people I meet on the riverbank are normally likeminded, decent people too.

That's good advice. I just can't find a water in Sussex that has what I am looking for, within a relatively short drive from home. But the rivers are great. Guaranteed space and fewer muppets. Carp in the summer, pike in the winter - great fun!

The Arun, Rother and Adur all have carp. The Arun in particular is not over fished. It has some very big carp and there's always the chance of a very big barbel. One or two stretches allow night fishing, so bivvying up is not a problem if that's what you want to do. My club is about £80 a year, so a damn sight cheaper than an syndicate too.

Been here felt the same . . .
The answer is to mix it up . . .stop focusing on carp and look to fish for other species / different venues / styles . . .
Whilst the twitch then scream of a buzzer at dusk on a secluded lake of monsters is addictive so is -
1 - Watching a stick float meander downstream to that elusive eddy to be pulled under by a large chub
2 - Waiting for the tips to hoop round on a larger river with a pair of rods fishing for barbel
3 - Sweetcorn in the margin using a pole and hooking into a decent tench / bream / carp
4 - Building a swim on a commercial and using a pellet waggler / slow sinking bomb for a fish a chuck
5 - Keeping mobile whilst spinning for pike with a variety of lures
6 - Fly fishing . . .possibly the ultimate challenge
When you've done all that re-visit the carp lakes and ignore the ****s . . .stay away from opinions / tackle / all the general bs associated with being a 'propa carpa' and you might just enjoy yourself / appreciate it a whole lot more . . .

Kids will be kids, whether they have a mental age of 8 like the Nash 'team', the handful of nobs on every water or the avaricious crew at Korda. Just like the videos with load Blairing music, you know within seconds who to turn your back on. Life's too short. Find your place and don't be fooled into thinking everyone is like them. People are products of their environment. Some may have alcohol or recreational drug problems, some talk with an accent you don't like and so on.
I find superiority complexes more offensive and making assumptions about others based on music preference and social skills.
Sometimes wish DF and the other usual targets would come on here and tell people to **** off.

Theres just as many knobs in fishing as there are in most walks of life. As said a lot depends on the venues. I fish club waters and I find some of the older generation can be just as irritating, albeit from a different way. By all means post on a public forum to have a rant, but to then name a high profile angler in the same post as cocaine use is not on. Interesting you say noj about hearn/fairbrass. I suppose one has a God like status (as far as it can be in fishing terms) and the other has a higher profile media type status.

You're all quite right in that I shouldn't generalise and having a pop at DF isn't fair. I'm a great fan of what he's done for carp fishing as a whole and his branding and what he's done for the image of the sport is certainly a feat.
It's difficult to do without naming, but my reason for pointing the finger in that general direction, was on several fishing trips with the same group of people, who regularly fish with the Korda crew, were very keen to point out that (I won't name names) "such and such loves a pill" or "such and such always comes prepared with a couple of grams when we go to bank".
This isn't confirmed and is little more than hearsay. But the people I went on these trips with were sponsored anglers, who moved in those particular circles.
As for themselves? Lets just say being on a coach for 10 hours with packets and snorting for it's entirety, there's no doubt in my mind that I know they were "blatant cocaine users". Aside from this group, I've witnessed it on the banks, in peoples bivvies when walking past and even in a tackle shop.

I used to frequent the River Wye once a year (Lower Canon Bridge) and had so much fun with the fight the Barbel used to put up!

Substance abuse, (be it drugs or alcohol) has always gone on in Carp circles, you only have to read books from various well known an respected anglers to know it's not something new..

I have a simple answer, I keep to myself.
It may cost me fish being round the opposite side of the lake or on somewhere quieter away from the 'party animals', but I fish for myself.
I avoid circuit waters or areas where these party animals are.
I rarely drink when I'm fishing, and definitely avoid other substances after a tearaway youth life that meant me and others had to pick up the pieces.
I have split up with two ex's, long term relationships, both with kids involved, and one that got especially nasty.
I have had long talks with my children, about my life, they know what has happened in my past.
Fishing was my return to sanity, most definitely.
I also don't fish exclusively for carp, I enjoy trips fishing for chub, roach, pike and because of that I can pick and choose my venues.
Thing is this alcohol and drug using attitude is not just in fishing, I think it is society as a whole. I've been running hotels, pubs, bars etc for over 20 years, on and off, mostly on, and almost every wedding I end up having to eject a toilet ' sniffer'. Every week in the pool and snooker club, at least one ejected and barred for drug use.
Binge drinking, every week someone ejected for being over the odds of alcohol.

These sort of people are found anywhere you go, it's not just a fishing thing. I fish a few waters including day ticket, I tend to ignore them and concentrate on what i'm doing. The alternative is as you have, give it up. I love my fishing to much to let them drive me away from it!

I'm quite confident in saying that if some of them behaved like they do in some of the pubs I know they would be sparked out in minutes
Is it not supposed to be a relaxing and tranquil pastime?
Keep yourself to yourself, and just get on with your fishing. Do not fish popular or circuit waters it attracts knob heads like flys round ****. That's my advice

Gordon Ramsay did a programme on chefs and sniff, many chefs are on it.
Doesn't help that for many the hours are so long, often 18hour days.

Doesn't help that for many the hours are so long, often 18hour days.

I am with you on most of your post and as a result, I barely fish this country at all with the exception that I have recently put together a small kit for Carp Angling on a couple of local rivers and drains.
I have one social trip to France on an exclusive to us commercial lake a year and as many trips as possible to public waters where I hardly see another human and that is just the way I like it.
Pukka, Get in and back of the net are just not for me.
I hope you find a place to enjoy your Angling the way you wish.

The worse thing about carp fishing today is all these new anglers who have had no experience with general fishing (fishing with a float for example), they come in with all their snazzy camo cloths and sunglasses, and gelled hair. And they love their techno \ jungle music.
They think carp fishing is 'cool' .
That's why I can't stand alot of these youtube videos from the big tackle companies who embrace this stuff in their videos.

Simple answer to that for me. I don't watch them unless they get a decent review on here
Fishing is many different things to many people and they can do whatever they like as long as it does not effect me.

In terms of bankside etiquette class A drug use is nothing new . . .neither is drug / alcohol fuelled bankside violence.
Linear St Johns over 20 years ago now I witnessed regular rows over swim rights and 'geezas' on charles / MDMA (one way of keeping alert I suppose) to alleviate the presumably dull time period between bleeps. . .
Remember fishing with a mate there once and being woken up by a full on pitched battle with lads weilding banksicks and mallets . .police were called - lovely! Made me laugh that. I have fished it twice, St. John's. Second time was the last time
I fished near those tall populars are they? It was busy. Lad was on the point. 3 nob heads rolled up just down from me towards the shallow area and proceeded to spod the whole area and thrash the water to a foam. Lad on the point was a bit pissed off and threatened to flatten them. Me and my mate were pissing ourselves, went on for about 3 hours, shouting insults at each other. The only disappointment was that they didn't smash each other to pieces as they were threatening. A nights fishing with free boxing, with a few beers, quids in

When it affects their work and ability to keep up in service is when it gets to me. Reading through this thread, I think some people need to watch less YouTube, spend less time on Facebook and put a bit more effort into finding decent venues to fish.
If the Korda videos wind you up don't watch them, if the lakes you are fishing are full of c***** find somewhere better to fish.
Strikes me the people with the real issue are those whinging about people and content that they have no requirement to interact with. If you're fishing lakes full of ‘nods' it probably says a lot about your own angling.

Pays the same as us, behaves like everyone else. Just wants to go fishing and Is a decent bloke with no ego or any other agenda than just to try really hard to catch carp, just like the rest of the members. So why not just go fishing and enjoy it and not be concerned by other anglers?

Amen to that. You can get a very distorted view watching YouTube vids. As others have said venue selection is key. As for going abroad, again I'm sure there's just as many dixxheads in France, Spain etc so venue choice is key there too.

It's obvious that Dovey, Spooner and Hamidi get a bit excited for the cameras on Monster Carp, it's selling a TV show after all and it wouldn't make for very good viewing if they sat there being all serious, that's why you don't see technical Fishing programmes on mainstream TV, they are boring!
Having met Dovey on a water last year he was quiet, polite and nothing like the TV persona, same for a lot of people from all different walks of life who appear in the media when compared to their own, private time.
Remember John Wilson and his hi pitched laughing and giggling, Bob Mortimer falling over in his fishing show with Paul Whithouse, not a lot different really but people wont let that stop the Korda bashing.

Whenever I go to a busier water it's seems like you get a constant stream of Anglers seeeking info:
Any good? Seen anything? Much out lately? Where are you fishing? What are you doing? Etc
It's like Groundhog Day having the same conversation over and over again.
I've met some great friends over the years through Angling and had some interesting conversations with all kinds of people but in recent years seem to only bump into people that think I'm really interested that they can get the bestest bait ever ever for £6 a kilo!
Like others have mentioned Bit Pits and other species seem the only way to relax and get some solitude.
I quite like this 15m Angling Trust reccomendation 😂

Sometimes i will put up a camo netting when i fish on rivers , if i can , just to hide from people so they don't try pestering me especially when i'm fishing close in , sometimes i use them to hide me from the fish , people seem to get the message if you have a camo netting up

It's not a UK thing, there are ****ers in every country that hold carp.

The lock down devided the country as the rich went too their country homes to isolate while the workers kept working same as always. When it's over the workers will finally be rewarded for their work with increased income tax, national insurance, vat and fuel prices.

Like said, there are numpties in every walk of life. I'm gagging to get out after 6 weeks of not going but the thought of a day ticket which will be even more busy then normal coupled with the cost I'm more then likely just going to wait a month until my club re opens.
Worst case iv ever experienced was at a small day ticket. All setup and had one down the margin, it was a grassy bank and no obvious signs of a swim - cushdy. That's until a geeza turned up in his full Korda gear (no dig at Korda as they have done a massive amount for fishing) anyways he sets up all of 10m to right of me and decided to cast around for ages (In a swim which I wouldn't class as a swim) making me reel in my margin rod. Then out comes a ball which he's having a kick about with his kids and dog running around like a headless chicken! I wouldn't have minded but on the opposite bank a far better swims was free. Needless to say I blanked as did he

Im a world away from inner city lockdowns in blocks of flats and my heart goes out to the people who have really suffered.

I doubt it's jungle, drum and bass maybe. I imagine their mums were probably cutting their fish fingers up for them when there were jungle raves going on. Haven't seen these videos to say for certain, but I couldn't imagine it goes well on a fishing video either way, be like slipknot on the great British bake off

I like a bit of old Skool jungle and drum & bass. But absolutely not either whilst fishing or in fishing videos. I just don't get the link at all. Think of Passion For Angling with flat out jungle, I don't think it would be quite as atmospheric some how.

Yep, my best mate likes it and my boy goes now. Dont even have a group of fishing mates. Dont even like talking to anyone when I am fishing. I think what the OG is struggling with is how mainstream fishing has now become as a sport. This is no fault of the Korda or Nash lads, they are selling products to a different group of people to what I imagine you grew up with. I'm on the borders of both camps, I started fishing when Tim Paisley, Rod Hutchinson, Julian Clundiff, Simon Crow etc were who I would see and read articles from most in Carpworld. Mostly seemed a more reserved personality who enjoyed their sport firstly and imo at the time seemed less interested in the business aspect. I must have completed Terry Hearns "In Pursuit of the Largest" several times over.. do I believe many anglers doing this now.. unlikely.
I got into angling through match fishing, learning water craft, hook types, rigs, knots and feeding methods... again would anglers do this nowadays? Unlikely..
This leads me on to the change in marketing and the likes of Korda with Danny and Frank Warwick on VHS that I would watch, the underwater series and the further emergence of YouTube and TV advertising. As the sport gained popularity as did the importance of marketing products to a more youthful audience, bigger personalities with the likes of Ali, Tom Dove or Alan Blair to name a couple. All of which I have nothing but respect for and have helped the sport no end in their own way. But these guys are employed to entertain in a sport they love and sell the products for a company, of course they are loud and exciting to watch.
When you look at how long it would take to get into carp angling when i started over 20 years ago.. it would take time, lots of reading, practise and research. Todays anglers can bring up a whole host of info on YouTube, mail order a ready made carp kit for £200 along with some ready made rigs, turn up at a lake with everything provided to them. This is why there are more of the anglers you talk about, its easy to become a carp angler and the guys they have been watching are loud and enthusiastic as this is what sells! They only see the likes of Darrell Peck pulling out countless 40's from a lake in a 45 minute video.. they don't see the countless blanks and hours walking sometimes miles around a lake to find them.
However even with this I still find the majority of anglers are good natured, the ones that stick around and become regulars even on busy day tickets are who I spend time with, I can ignore the odd few idiots.
Failing that find yourself a good syndicate with some good anglers on that are like minded, they definitely exist and i guarantee you would be angling happily again.

That's just the industry evolving to the masses, as I said this is now a profitable sport which means fisheries have to adapt. I look at when I started fishing and I could visit a number of lakes that were wild and unkept plus fish for nothing. I would struggle to do that now as they can be spun into money makers with little to no effort. But again, as said in my prior post, there are still syndicates and lakes that are not like that, you just need to find them. Let the new guys with their new kit fish the "carp soup catchery".
I also want to look at the positives from all of this as it seems people are looking mainly at negatives. The development of bait means we have more choice, meaning better chance of catching and for the majority of places a good source of food is going into lakes. You could also argue this has meant bigger carp in our lakes. Tackle developments mean I don't have to push a stacked, single wheel barrow around my lake with bungee cords anymore, I could even by an electrical one now! There are facilities such as toilets and cafes meaning I can take my kids with me and not have to worry about digging a hole in some bushes and.. well you know...
Because of the money involved and commercialism of most fisheries there are disabled facilities meaning more people can enjoy the sport. Look at the otter issue( I whole new debate I'm sure haha) but without the funds to fence these lakes the stock of carp could have been heavily reduced.

The simple answer is dont fish those types of waters, or if you do then take them for what they are. During the close season I unfortunately have to occasionally venture on to them. I spend a lot of time shaking my head and muttering to myself, but I also get a good laugh out of it as well, as some clown will inevitably fall in, or lose a good fish through utter stupidity, or come round and and regal me with his amazing capture stories of how he caught three doubles from this swim using an old hairbo from the footwell of his Citroen Saxon blah blah blah.
Then i go and fish proper waters with proper anglers and leave the clowns to their circus. No harm done. The best bit about numpty waters is that on the whole they keep all the numpties in one place, and that keeps them out of my waters. What's not to like?

Gonna throw my rant out there been fishing a quiet day ticket for a few years now and with the coronavirus it's been busy which is to be expected the lake holds old English scaley mirrors with only a few commons and are jet black.with it being so busy people are catching and putting on social media,I get it but putting the name of the lake on there is doing my head in,personally I dont put any catches on any social media I just have an album on my computer,these people will be the first to moan when they cant get on the lake or get in a certain swim they would like to fish.

Sadly its a reflection on society. Many of us old timers in here will look back with rose tinted glasses, about how we did our time migrating from catching skimmers, bream tench and then carp. We probably blanked for many sessions before we got our heads around it, sponged some advice and help form the serious carp anglers and spied on them across the lake with binoculars to see what a hair rig really looked like or what particles they were using. We had to trash our mums blender to experiment making boillies. Our first fish were so rewarding because we felt we had done the time and hard graft.
Very few of the guys I know (50+) who have fished for years started as Carp anglers in the 70's. We were just kids who enjoyed fishing and that's were we migrated to, and we have a different perspective.
Today, there is no patience,people wants instant results and some fisheries cater to that and there is so much advice out there to help people catch. I also use these fisheries sometimes when I do fancy a social with some friends who used to fish, or perhaps do fish and want to try carp fishing for a change. You can still do that and be a respectful and considerate neighbour to the bloke in the next swim.
I came to terms with this a long time ago and just remind myself why I like to go fishing and just try and select the lakes that give me the experience I want. I still get more excited when i'm leaving the house to go fishing than I do if i'm heading to the airport to catch a flight to some exotic location.

I'm lucky that since the 80s I've been on a few syndicates which somewhat return me to an earlier time. Yet the new crowd seem to think when they are on the lake they own it, that sort of attitude is best serviced watching football. When you have Korda who make videos for the clown community what can you expect from sheep but to follow their idols bljngky and act in the same manner as these videos.
Glad I've seen some beautiful places and shared some amazing experiences in those times and maybe again if people repesct the other anglers and tone down with the Charlie n liquor on the bank....

I'm assuming that you fished on circuit waters hence the knobs? Came across some Nash lot some years back, my oh my, what a bunch of tools, caught f**k all too.
Easy answer is to find big waters with not a great deal in, it's even better if the stock is bellow 30lb. A sure fire way to keep a *certain* type of angler away. You'll enjoy your fishing and not be pi**ed off and have your time ruined.

Just re read this thread from the beginning and it reminded me of when i was fishing at dartford in 1984 with my new rods from the tackle box. The bailiff came up behind me and said " you won't catch anything with those cheap rods here.".. Proved him wrong, but he was an A1 ars@#!e.

I started fishing when in 1998 I was 9 years old, my two uncles were passionate about fishing; one a very good match fisherman and the other an equally good fisherman who loved to even make his own maggots. I was extremely lucky to be able to learn off these two and from that I got my love for fishing.
During these years I fished a few matches and went all over the place and caught all sorts. The angling community was very different even then, you never heard a peep from anyone on the bank, most people were reserved, friendly and genuinely knowledgeable about fishing.
Fast forward to today (especially during lockdown) and my experience is very different. You can't even get peace and quiet, on Sunday I spent a day trying to fish on a pool that had your bog standard Bite Alarm-ringing, loud-mouth chav fishermen all around the pool, not one of them seemingly understands how to mute their phone, casting into my swim. Violent and thuggish behaviour and constant swearing.
Did these people not learn that sound travels quicker through water? All this obnoxious banter, music and other disturbances are turning off the fish.
What really grinds my gear is how they don't appear to love the sport. Not in the same way I do. I detest bite alarms and don't believe they should be used in the day time at all; it's just an excuse for lazy "easy" fishing, chuck out 3 rods, sit down and gorm out looking at Facebook, that's how these people like to fish.
I have opted to go for a more hybrid approach of fishing; taking on the lessons of past and present, I fish with 1 rod, a quiver feeder fishing or waggler float fishing,
I really love just sitting there analysing fish behaviour, trying to learn and expand my skills. But the art is lost on these guys, an apt metaphor would be the guy on the yacht listening to classical music vs the hatchback blasting dubstep whilst tumbling down a hill.

I've been doing the same as you lately and in the last seven days I've caught Gudgeon, Roach, Rudd, Common, Mirror, F1, Crucian, Ide, Bream, Chub, Barbel, Perch, Crayfish(!) and last night - for the first time in over 30 years - an EEL!
Hoping to add bleak, minnow, dace, trout & pike sometime next week.

The past few years has seen my fishing go back to being a kid again, fishing for roach, bream, pike and chub as well as carp.
The noise on the bank on some waters really puts me off. Drunken socials, hearing both sides of a phone conversation from the other side of the 20 acre lake, music blaring.
I do leave often my buzzers on during the day, usually because when i'm carp fishing I tend to be water watching or reading a book and I need the sound to draw me out of my reverie (?spelling), but sometimes they are switched off.
Recently I saw some big barbel on a Norfolk river, which got my attention when they are so rare, so I have attempted to catch one on a few overnight trips.

What you are experiencing is becoming very, very common I'm afraid- Carp fishing has become a disguise for what many term as “Fancy Camping Trip” our a “Out Door lads night out” , fishing has just become a secondary activity.
I do all kinds of fishing from Barbel, Chub, and Pike, even Fly fishing for Roach, Trout, Grayling and Pike. But as someone on the bank said the other week “It's only Carp fishing that has become a moron magnet” It does seem that way.
But it's being stamped out around here as the Clubs and Syndicates are seriously cracking down on them, as it only takes one or two retards to keep spoiling everybody's fishing time.

Yes, I've noticed SOME large clubs in my general area, stating a zero tolerance policy to alcohol, yes, not one single can. And they are enforcing it as well.

My club brought in an alcohol ban earlier this year after a couple of alcohol related/ fuelled incidents on the bank. I like a can or two whilst fishing, but many people were taking the p@@s, and drinking far too much. It's a shame the majority can no longer enjoy a beer, but it had to be done.

My club has just put a message out that they will be cracking down on weed smokers anyone caught smoking weed on the lakes will be banned. They normally turn a blind eye to it but I suspect some of the members have been taking the piss.
My club has just put a message out that they will be cracking down on weed smokers anyone caught smoking weed on the lakes will be banned. They normally turn a blind eye to it but I suspect some of the members have been taking the piss.

A mate that used to come with us was the same. On the bud all the time, used to make me laugh at first, big clouds coming out of the tent, smell it a mile off, totally trashed most of the time. I often questioned what pleasure he actually got out of fishing other than been trashed on the bank. Quite funny though when we used give his tent a good shake, Mr paranoid

Always been that way I'm afraid, 2 or three cans has turned into boxes for some, just one big piss up with related behaviour. For some this is a huge part of their fishing trips, just as important as the fishing, if not more so.

Lol. That's a good way to clear the banks of anglers. Nearly every angler I come across is blazzin hard. Ganna be some really edgy anglers on your club that like to burn hard that can't. Ha, it's ganna be like fight club.

This ain't a recent thing, it's a big part of the reason I gave up carp fishing in the mid-2000's. I go again now, but the lure of Barbel and the rivers is far stronger. Last weekend I had over half a mile of tidal Trent to myself, even when the stretch is ‘busy' you still have a minimum of 150-200 yards of water between you and another angler.
And it cost me £80 for the season!

Besides the noise and drunken aggro, You have got to question the beer swilling, pot smoking anglers ability to fish well, wake up quickly, handle big fish on the bank safely without dropping and snapping fins and tails, being p*ssed up.
Then when they leave the venue they are all probably over the legal limit so are putting themselves and their livelihood, and other people's lives at risk, driving home after a session.

I've only skimmed through this as there's so much of it, but I'm quickly realising that I've lead a sheltered and somewhat privileged angling life. I grew up on the canals, being taught by my old man and gradually progressed through species before carp took over.
Since, I've never really done the day ticket thing and have been lucky to fish on a number of delightful syndicates, with sensible memberships only allowing people in after recommendation and interview. Even then though, it is so apparent that one or two “bad eggs” can change things markedly.
I was lucky enough to have been taught with etiquette at the forefront of everything. If you haven't had that luxury, then how do you learn? If you were to start out fishing on a day ticket or open access club, like most would, you are likely to be surrounded by poor angling practice and then deem that the norm... That's all the experience you have, why would you know any different?
The best place to learn how to carry yourself would be on a proper syndicate, but the likelihood of getting a ticket without already knowing that would be extremely slim. Much like graduates not being given jobs due to their lack of experience... they have to gain that experience somehow.
I've seen syndicates change very quickly because of inexperienced new members gaining tickets... markers flying about all over the lake at bite time. Baiting numerous swims at first light because you haven't had a bite “all night” (bearing in mind 5 bites a year is good going). Hardly criminal behaviour compared to day ticket fishing is it, but it was more than enough to seriously piss off the rest of the long standing, harmonious membership.
I saw something the other day that really made me realise that there is a different angling world going on.
I'd gone to a commercial fishery with the old man and my brother, just like the old times.
We sat with float rods, 6lb line and size 14's fishing for singles averaging about 4lb.
Then a couple of “carpers” turned up. After loudly declaring, “I'm fishing the closest peg to the car because I can't be arsed to walk”, a barrage of gear was unloaded and literally thrown into the peg.
They then spent AT LEAST half an hour setting up bivvies. Obviously brand new and they were made to look magazine worthy, all the vents rolled up perfectly, pegs in every point etc. I don't think they even had bed chairs with them and clearly weren't doing the night. It was 20odd degrees and sunny .
They then set up a chair at the front of the swim, nowhere near the bivvies and got their pods out. 10 minutes of alarms beeping at full volume and various tones later I couldn't stop laughing... they hadn't even taken a rod out of a sleeve. Eventually, they got around to fishing and literally dumped a couple of rigs off the tips. I'd actually thought they'd let go of the line by accident before casting but nope, two rigs in a pile, in 1ft of water off the tips after spending getting on for 2 hours setting stuff up. They spent the afternoon shouting to each other about who was better and who's alarm would sound the best when it went before getting pissed off that they hadn't caught and complaining about the fishery.
Is that really what fishing has become?!

Don't know why you think the life blood of angling the open access club would surround you with poor angling either. As you say anglers with fat wallets that have joined " proper syndicates" with vetting have turned out to be dick heads. You should be educating those in your example rather than s******ing at them.

Agreed. I grew up fishing Lincolnshire drains, local ponds, anywhere that was free, then went onto day tickets and have never been in a carp syndicate. Mainly because of the reasons stated above -plus massive waiting lists for anything decent in Yorkshire back in the day. Plus I've always kept myself to myself.

Me too, what a river, I've a ticket on the tidal, privalige to be there tbh, so glad I drove up to the trent 3 years back, opened up a new era in my fishing.

I completely agree with so many points said here. Into my late teens and early 20s I was heavily inspired (as many) by the Matt Hayes videos, and we followed him as he changed his tactics to a more "modern" approach. These days he has been completely alienated by this type of fishing, if you visit his Youtube channel you will see he has gone back to proper fishing, for species variety and using much less gear.
I think for those who have been fishing at least 10-15 years, they may go through this realisation too. When it comes down to it, size really doesn't matter. When it's all said and done, I find myself having way more fun on a bank in the middle of the country side, catching Chub, Tench, Barbel, Roach, Perch, Rudd, Crucian Carp and Bream. Even the smaller F1s are arguably more fun than many of the big brutish Carp you get in syndicates where you are lucky if you get a few bites in a day and past a certain size they seem to stop fighting as much and just become dead weight.
The difficulty I have at the moment is finding waters that aren't just stocked to the brim full of Carp.

I don't know anyone who smokes that ****. It should be illegal to smoke it outside of your house. It stinks, and why the hell do you need it, especially when fishing. Being by the bank is relaxing in itself, you don't need alcohol or weed.

I think etiquette in everyday life and society has gone downhill in my time on earth.
From treating people with respect to 'screw you, i'm what matters'.
This attitude transfers from society into fishing.
Hyperloop made the point about open access clubs and day ticket waters, yet when I was in my teens our local club every member had respect for everyone else. The match anglers didn't mix with the 'speci' boys, but there was no animosity. The specimen anglers for tench, and carp weren't loud, brash or partaking.
That same club now, thanks but no thanks.
As for syndicates, I think there are some good some bad, and sometimes you get a bad apple come through.
To be honest, I think you need to educate everyone; the respectful anglers won't mind the repetition, however the bad anglers probably wouldn't listen.

From when I started Carp Fishing I've witnessed the changes too- at the start it was the situation that got most of the attention as in being policed by the rules, of late most of the empathise has shifted to actually policing the person.
But as I put in an earlier post – clubs/syndicates are cracking down big style on the situation by introducing stricter procedures like –
~ Seven long term members (6 years +) must all agree to let a prospective new member join.
~ Even then they are on a 3 month probation period, and are made very aware that they are.
~ When it comes renewal time, there's no automatic renewal - re-join is by invite only.
~ Club waters are starting to separate night & day anglers a lot more, with separate set of extra rules to adhere too.
But there will always be the Commercials and syndicates where Profit is the only priority, for them to go and fish, as they will let anyone in, and long may it continue

Sounds similar to the syndicate I'm on. You have to be recommended through a certain channel, then meet up and checked over. Again each year you are invited to re join. To be honest I like it, all the guys are decent, quiet anglers on there. I do go for social fishing weekend's with mate's on a day ticket but that's a whole lake booking.
