You know, for some time I've been trying to rationalize why having a lighter reel might make a difference as I've been tempted to buy a set of Aero Technium's. The only thing apart from being easier when you're repetitively casting - however marginal - is quicker hand speed (apologies for repeating myself) which equates to longer ranges for which these big pit reels are designed for. Obviously we're not constantly banging a lead to the horizon, though having a reel that can get you big distances when needed...

Great point diggs

100g seems trifling, it's such a punny amount hardly worth even considering especially in the context you've put it in. I think that over time like I was trying to illustrate in my post that weight saving is only really noticeable at range, after all, you do have to reel in after you've cast whereby a lighter reel would make some differences.

You've kinda answered your own question in a way. Okay, so spombing out 30 spombs @100yds... not so bad even with a heavy spod/reel combo, now try 30kg in one go... F**ked! Now if you had a light spod/reel combo that could do the same job, not so knackred.

In respect to your rod you're fishing with, similar applies. If you're casting @100yds for arguments sakes, even spraying it all over the shop looking for that perfect spot for ages isn't going to be that bad, but if you're banging out say 150yds, it's going to be noticeable how much more effort you're exhausting to get out there spraying it all over the place, so a lighter reel would be better, plus I'd say - as I've already mentioned - a lighter reel is easier to generate the hand speed to even get out to 150yds in the first place.

Definitely lighter the better If you're fishing big waters - which these types are supposed to be used for - and finding spots at range, a lighter real has to be the one; stands to reason as it's going to be less knackering over time vs a heavier real.

I could make an analogy between a heavy 35lb cross country mountain bike that's loaded with Shimano's cheap components vs one tricked out in Shimano's XTR groupset weighing 25lb. Yeah both components do the same job, but after lifting the heavier bike over obstacles ect vs the lightweight bike that's as light as a feather and much more reactive and easier to peddle up hill, lightweight bike wins all day long. You're never going to see a 35lb plusser in any cross country competitions for good reason.

I suppose it all comes down to what you're happy with, where you're fishing and how deep your pockets are. If you're fishing smaller waters where you're not banging out at mega ranges then maybe a heavier reel is fine, but if you're having to cast at range, lighter reel all day long simply due to fatigue with a heavier reel plus you're going to be able to generate quicker hand speed with a lighter reel - physics'. If you're using a boat of any description, light vs heavy goes out the window to a large extent, but, are you always going to be using some kind of boat?

Oh don't be a tw*t. It was obviously said in jest. But to answer your question that had nothing to do with someone I don't know... Yes, yes I have.

"I don't think any average anglers likes having full timers on their water. I know I don't. It's not jealousy more "f*ck me he's in that swim again" everytime you go fishing."

Lol, I know that feeling all too well. A pucka SW blowing right into a top spot, no-one in the car park...winning. drag all your gear for a mile plus through insane amounts of mud, rocks and bolders, full of beans buzzin as you get closer to the spot and even spy one nut out right on the money, turn the last corner... ...and c**ty bo**oxs is in the swim (not a peg noddy's) - he parked at another car park, all sly like. Man, I wouldn't wish cancer on someone, but...

That sounds really weird. Never had that happen to me. Maybe a dodgy batch? Lost a few of them due to that sh*ity Fox Spod and Marker braid...f**king stuff, like cotton.

Been showered loads of times with it when it just grazes a leaf or branch behind me on a cast. Covered in sloppy spomb juice just ain't the one.
Are you sure?
