As title suggest,
Please can I get recommendations for the best fluro mainline?
Fishing a small place so casting at range isn't necessary.

Well it isn't Korda Kontour in 18lb I'm afraid . . . springy / casts like a pig / needs constant line management - sinks brilliantly however and is reasonable vfm / easy to top up spools by buying 3x 200m's!

Going to try PB Products Ghost Dragonfly in 15/18lb next based on multiple recommendations . . .

Straight throw with Tiger sees my maximum cast at about 60 yards, brilliant stuff but a casters nightmare, stripped it after 1st session and now only use for leaders, obviously just my experience and noddy casting!

20lb X-Line is still the one for me. Casts fine for a 0.37 line, sinks great, pretty well behaved for a flouro and it's a decent price. Also tried the Berkeley stuff (CF600?) which was fine for 6 months then went brittle and wouldn't take a knot. The Korda Kontour shredded too easily in weed. I just stick to Xline now

Flouro reel line is more a pain in the neck than its worth. I would go for a good quality sinking mono. The only one is used that was OK was Korda 12lb.
If you have big arbour spools you could get away with some flouro's but its a lot of faff.

I've been using gardner mirage for around a year on a small water. I've used the 14lb version and it's been good. I even use it on small reels and, whilst it does need looking after, its performed brilliantly. Found a palomar knot is the best to use for this line b/s.

Is XLine a pure fluro or simply a coated one? Thought the original release was a coated mono - has this changed?

I'm using a boat so not being able to cast is not the end of the world - also like the low stretch of fluros especially when boating out at range as this is a massive advantage over mono

Ive used sinking mono and flourocarbon, and feel the cons, far outweigh the pros.

Normal mono will sink, and aslong as youre not fishing bow tight lines, and let the line sttle before setting your indicators etc, you can get a decent amount on the deck. Any more than about 2-3 meters from the rig end is unnecessary in my opinion.

And the more line in the bottom of the lae, the more bite indication is effected. Youre better off spending a bit of time after casting, letting the line settle, than worrying about changing the mailine. I use a 750mm - 1 metre long unleaded leader and syncro xt, and have no worries at all about the rig end being suspended. Light hangers and slightly slack lines for short to medium range and no issues with the line being pulled up that end either.

Ultima did Ultima Carp line that was a flouro coated mono that had its devotee's, myself included.

It was a bit springy when new but was OK when used for a while became manageable and it sank well. It biggest plus was its invisabity. When I saw it side by side with a bog standard mono the difference was amazing.

They stopped making it for the carp market but if you look around they still do a sea fishing line and the blurb on the packaging is exactly the same - flouro coated mono. It is more difficult finding it in the lower breaking strains but a spin off is that it is cheaper as the word carp is not used so avoids carp tax

X-Line is a flourocarbon line, not coated mono. Always has been as far as I'm aware. Can't see the point in a coated mono, worst of both worlds.

The benefits of flouro over mono for me are the decreased stretch, abrasion resistance and the way it sinks, in that order. If you use a proper flouro like X-line or Tiger and give it time to bed in then it's not a problem to use. I think a lot of people put it on, panic that it's a bit more unruly than mono off the spool and strip it off before it beds in.

I'll use braid with a flouro leader 100% of the time if the rules allow. If they don't then Xline straight through is the next best thing. Going back to mono feels stodgy and dull with all the stretch. Mono is for nods

I like it for the same reasons but would return to Synchro XT if I had to cast consistently; I believe my results have picked up since using fluro mainline this season; primarily ease of getting the line sunk over multiple undulations but also takes at range and being able to connect / control quicker with the lack of stretch . . .

At £76 for 600 metres it should be, before Gardner got hold of it a 1000 metre spool was cheaper than that. I really liked the Diawa Super Soft fluro, sadly they don't make that anymore.

That's the Jasper 👍

Exactly the same and cheaper too as it's aimed at the shore fishing community.

As it was for the carp market

My normal setup seems to be a lot lighter than what is the norm now with 12lb line and size 8 hooks, whereas 18lb+ and size 6 seems to be the norm 🫤. Finding it 12lb is challenging. 15lb is not so bad but still uncommon, 18lb plus is easier.

It's the same stuff 👍

I got this for a France trip where the lake had minimum 15lb rule. From the note stuffed in the spool wrapper I know it is the sea version as I never bought 15lb in the carp version.

I accept this is not true flouro, and some may not be keen, but it sinks well, behaves once settled down, but having used it and seen its invisibility, I can put up with any of its shortcomings. 👍

can't fault 17lb X line tbh. yes it can be a bit frappy at times, but similarly i have also hit casts up to 125 yards with it no problem at all (probably get more if it wasn't for the fact i was using soft rods..)

sinks well, strong as anything and can sling a lead. does it all!

and IMHO ALL

a lot better than X-Line that that has always snapped below its stated strain ok so it sinks the fastest but at what expense ?

So for about the 5th time in 40 years shall I go with flouro and if so which one.
I can't cast any I've tried 90yards.
My lake has a tubing rule
I use flying back leads and traditional back leads
I use a semi slack line.

Is the investment and frustration worth it?
Interested in not just which to use but what edge you think it brings in actual situations

I'm new to fishing Fluoro this year so put 12lb Kontour on a small water setup and do believe has given me an edge, I definitely feel like I've caught more fish this year.

The water I'm on is getting clearer now the temps dropping too so I do think it will continue to benefit my approach.

I can cast about 80 yards using a 4oz lead but don't normally fish anywhere near that distance, maybe 30/40 yards

One thing I did have happen was that I lost my first few fish on it. I put this down to little/no stretch in the line so I play fish on a slightly lighter clutch to compensate for this.

What Mark said about sensitivity is spot on, it really surprised me to begin with how much feedback I get from semi slack lines it's like you get a warning before the run 👍.

I've still got mono on a set of spools but looking at putting some stronger Fluoro on my pits and have been looking at seaguar options and xline basically because it seems to be so cheap compared to the others.

I have wondered about using tubing with it but decided that defeats the object so I've had about 4ft 25lb as a bit of a leader and to help avoid rig twists which has worked OK for me too

Couldn't agree more. I've been using Gardner Mirage for four
years plus and, set up properly, it is an incredibly sensitive mainline that can register the slightest movement. I fish it almost exactly as TCarper describes. The only thing I would add is the need to continue to keep an eye on the line and slack it off, it continues to sink over a period of time and as such will tighten up at the rod tip end. I don't know how much difference that makes at the rig end but I like to keep an eye on it. Mirage needs to be tied with a palomar, in my experience. No need for back leads, the takes on fluro always make me chuckle, rod tip slamming down as though you've hooked a fish under the rod tip when it's actually been hooked 50 yards out.

Dont knock it / knock one out (!) till you've tried it! I like fluro mainlines for the same reasons that others state but it is expensive compared to mono . . . Hybron (whilst also pricey) is a genuine, more user and maintenance friendly alternative and just as good if not better than fluro if you fish slack and want a really quick sinking line . . .

I've got the FTX on my little rods, so fishing the 16lb version on Daiwa Whisker 25 QD with 2oz leads. Used it for 3 over nighters upto 30yds, casts ok, obviously a bit coily as it's still new. Caught each time I've used it, had to give a couple of fish the beans to keep them out of snags and it's dealt with them fine. Sinks really well as you'd expect and does sit on the reels really nicely. It's replaced 20lb xline, I still like the xline (and it's much cheaper) but the FTX colour is much better. Early impressions are that its good stuff.

I had a similar issue with tigerline.
I bought the 16lb straim from angling direct & was snapping off when I knew I shouldn't be. I had a bit left over on the spool it came on, so I tied 7 3 meter lengths with loops & pulled them slowly with a digital scale.

All of them broke at around 10lb's. Most of them not even near the knot. I got a refund

I bought some daiwa floorit super soft to replace the tigerline. Off the bat it's much more springy than the tiger line, but it is in a thicker breaking strain.
I'm hoping that will change given use & time to break in.

I use 0.40 (20lb) PB Hybron on Daiwa Whisker 25QDs and 10' rods with 5-6oz leads . . . .admittedly I'm mainly using a boat however it does cast well when I've attached a 3oz lead and cast to showing fish and certainly a lot better than the 0.35 15lb Kontour I was using previously . . .

I've got some Hybron on the spare spools, it's nice stuff for a mono and sinks better than any other mono I've used. I like the next to no stretch properties of fluro that the hybron isn't as good as, but if casting any distance or silly accuracy is required like dinner plate sized holes in weed, then I'll happily switch to the hybron.

Good synopsis - the more 'direct' feeling of Fluro is its only advantage IMO . . still think Hybron has way less stretch than standard monos; what differentiates it from fluro is that it sinks just as well (if not better as its more supple) / casts a lot better / is way more manageable. . .

Had mine spooled since March on 3x reels and a fished 48hrs pretty much every week since then to date - water is relatively snag free but at 0.40 line is still in good shape (have periodically stripped small sections for dinks / burrs / abrasion over that time period) . . .

Only ran a single test to preserve what I have left. I'd like to try the 25m test once or twice for science, but it's an issue of finding the time & space
