Since rejoining the carp fraternity, I've tried very hard to keep things as minimal as possible and generally I've done a good job - still using contis and rigamarole materials I had from before, same with my bivvy, mat and a net.
I got new reels which I've been super happy with but rods, oh my days it feels like I can't go a week without eyeing up different ones, so I'd have no chance going a whole year!
Amount of money I've spent/lost on rods would probably go well into four figures if I added it all up 🙄🤦♂️

Same as mate,cept for the Swingtip rod ordered before xmas..lol
I'm going to seriously reduce and look at my stuff in general ,not just angling..I find it an interesting subject,I gave a load of stuff to kids where I live,never use it...made me feel good seeing a small gesture impacting nicely..
How many just ,buy ,keep and not use things in fishing?..(each to their own)....or follow fashion for no reason ..I'm trying to be individually constant.

all honestly my set up isnt built of the new fad tackle, shimano veloctiys with 5000ts and ECU alarms.
i cannot see myself changing anytime soon as i honestly dont think i need to. i make my own bait so i honestly do think ill be able to go this year and probably the next 2/3 without buying anything significant. the only thing i would like is a better spod rod, but the amount of times i actually use one i can wait until the fat bloke comes down the chimney in a few years time

Few bits there mate...
Edit I once played pool and snooker to a higher standard,had loads of trophies 🏆, cluttering everywhere up..I got rid of them all,even the LMS ,one I won.. I felt ,lighter,difficult to explain really..

stupid mate, i gave bits n bobs away to youngsters who would benefit from it.
still kept my fly kit as i love a bit of fluff chucking, wandering about, swim to swim with a couple of fly rods a net and a bag.

(Well done giving a few bits away as well)..made this lads day I did other day ,I seen him fishing nearby,very keen ,no gear,just keen,...oi, hey up chap ,want a few bits, hang on,his mother came and thanked me..was only a korum quiver,but made his day....plus his dad ,had fkrdd off recently..
I'm going to try and ,do it for at least this year ..frugal.

Definitely can opt out of all the BS. My rods and reels are over 20 years old. I think the older you get the easier it is to see through all the rubbish, and now I buy quality instead of quantity

Barrow,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, small shoulder bag with tupperware box of particle, another if using boil lies. Poleroids on and walk round to find a spot or two to bait sparingly. Back to car add a minimal amou t of end tackle and a few 1 and 2oz leads to bag, grab rod and net which are in folded matt and back to spots. My chosen rod for this style of fishing is a 10ft 2.25tc scope as I can also freeline bread or use a controller on it. Now the weather is warming up I will use a larger shoulder bag for drinking water, a bite to eat and sun cream. Bag or mat serves as rod rest if required, rarely take pictures and don't weigh fish.

Do you have any tip for superlight travel or telescopic spinning rod? Getting into more hike&strike mood lately and cant decide what to get... I will also not be buying any other tackle in 2022 and for 2023 I decided to ditch boilies and fish only particles, mostly tigers.

Having come back to carping in 2020 after a few years fluff chucking etc, I've spent far too much in the last couple of years. This year it's just going to be the essentials, though I do fancy a new sleeping bag, <£40. My biggest expense will be diesel. I've just filled my car up, gauge was showing over 1/4 tank and 150 mile range on the trip, but I'm off fishing tomorrow. Used pay at pump and it cut out at the £99 limit, first time that's happened to me!

I always ask myself two questions when considering a purchase: Do I want it or do I need it? If I honestly think I need it then I buy it. If I honestly don't need it but want it then I buy it and just feel bad about myself for a few days. Thankfully I've never really been easily suckered into new fads though and my simplistic approach doesn't really lend itself to buying loads of kit. I tend to only replace stuff when it breaks which is not very often because I prefer to pay extra initially for quality gear. I've never really understood people who change bait, mainline, hook patterns etc all the time.

I tend to keep stuff after it “retires” as there is always a story to tell.
I have 3 aero tecnium 10000xt with nine spare spools all retired now due to parts and wanting them to last, I have 4 of the aero technium MGS 120000 XTB original black mags which are absolutely fine. Nothing wrong with them. All I want is more spare spools.
Rods are where I let myself down lol. For 4 treb lights from blackys custom rods that had half the fittings missing, poor build and I'm loathed to use them until I can afford a strip and rebuild. They already would have been but Clayton rods aren't doing rebuilds currently.
I have my three free spirit xs which were work houses for me for I'd imagine well over 13 years maybe longer, I bought three scopes in 2020 as ar times I'm on public transport and the pack down size just makes sense.
If I could the former beginners rods, lures rods, sea rods, rods my parents bought me as a child, rods thst just seem to accumulate there is probably 50 or more. However even ones that are FUBAR have a story and I personally enjoy having memories triggered, I even have the first float I ever used when coarse fishing, and in a tub, buried in tge freezer now for nostalgia, my very first EVER baits I made. Little palm rolled brown hookbaits and I remember the recipe - ground halibut pellet, egg, soya flour, semolina, touch of salmon oil. Glugged in oyster sauce from the Asian supermarket. Caught absolute stacks lol I did a 12 egg mix of 10mm hookbaits 😂 about 8 left. 22/23 years old I believe 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I'm very near to retirement so replacing virtually all my kit but rods reels and pod with bite alarms gone to family.

Maxcatch triple zoom 11 to 13ft ,tele ,level line and Lillian knots to spliced tip.goes in side pocket of a Northern Ireland day pack ,Box of tiny,tiny course fishing flies,or a fladen tele 6ft long extended ..goes in top of rucksack,prefer the Tenkara for fun though,two floats ,bit of shot ,10 hooks to nylon ..
Leatherman side kick,n disgorger
Banshee 200 or Dpm.tarp...old camo tarp.used folded in half as groundsheet or footprint protector..

throughout the year its just replacing end tackle and bait thankfully. don't often make major purchases and thankfully don't get sucked into buying the latest and greatest kit items

I dont crave new gear like i have done in the past though .... my last purchase were the ESP Stalker rods as will be fishing small river from a boat this year and that was first rod/reel combo purchase made in quite a few years

It's madness isn't it. At the end of the day they're just tools for a job and many of us won't admit that we buy for aesthetics rather than purpose. The only true enjoyment we get is from the fat pig swimming in the drink, and the nature around us. That stuff is free, we're just paying for the carbon, steel, and the right to step on the dirt next to the pond.
Thing is, if we treated tackle like they ARE tools for the job, we wouldn't buy nowhere near as much. We don't have 5 different kettles which has varying amounts of quantities and boils times, and we would laugh at the Mrs (not the fag pig previously mentioned btw) for suggesting it, so why do we do it with reels? We don't need 5 sets of big pits, it's only so we can sit behind 3 rods with a warm glow, looking fondly at them whilst not realising you have 3 Ronnie's buried in the weed.

Three routers, two planers, two jig saws, three circular, the list would be much larger than my fishing gear. All my tools would need a big van to move but all my tackle would fit in my estate car. As for bait I take what I need and some places I fish if too much bait is put in nothing gets caught. Polaroids, chesties and decent bins are vital tools in my fishing.

As for bait I take what I need and some places I fish if too much bait is put in nothing gets caught. Polaroids, chesties and decent bins are vital tools in my fishing.

I fished a new complex last year where I could see on reflection that I probably could do with a few extra bits. I have booked again this year. Not rods or reels etc but, if fishing is your passion and you have the means then why not?
Apart from a car and a house I probably dont own a lot more stuff. My misses doesn't think twice about another pair of shoes or a new top, bag etc.

I came back to coarse fishing 2 years ago, after a 10 year break.
Now I'm actually selling gear and either not replacing it or buying something cheaper (usually used) instead.
Latest bargain was a pair of 3lb Chimeras for £50......they replaced a set of 2.75 Torrix rods and I don't miss them.
I have some very nice Infinity magnum tapers but might even sell those on now.
All that interests me now is the line, the rig and the bait. Then I just have t chuck it in the right place.

I try not to keep buying for the sake of it, I already own far too much gear.
When I do buy new gear, I normally sell on the items it replaces, although as you mention, the breakages. A couple of years ago I did a number of rods as the car boot slammed down by itself on rods, last winter it was a blooming burn in a brolly.
Saying that, this year the sleeping bag and bedchair has been replaced after around 5 years.

100% trying to do this across most things.
Watched a cool film on netflix called The Minimalists.
Granted these guys took it to the extreme, but as a rule since watching it I only buy 'stuff' that i REALLY need and have given away, sold or binned items I've not used in the recent few months.
It without doubt gives a feeling of organisation and freedom/clear head etc.
(not to mention saving money!!)
It also means WHEN buying an item... I buy a decent version of said thing that I ACTUALLY want vs a cheaper or lesser version because i've not got the available cash.
It's the way forward for me for sure

These two blokes have been around for years now and hundreds of other doing a similar sort of thing and documenting on social media.
Quite alot of them take it to the extreme and in America it's become more of a trend over the last few years.
It's been quite a good platform for those two blokes to make lots of money with seminars etc, always plenty of gullible folks who will attend the seminars giving an insight into what is common sense IMO.

Here's something to think about..my neighbour,he passed on ,his son lives 8 hrs away ..came down to sort out the cottage..
In a nutshell,absolutely everything this chap owned was put in a skip,family pic,clothes...you name it,someone's whole life ,just chucked in a soulless skip and dumped..
I thought ,wow...all that stuff and memories,and meant nothing to the son..

I agree it's mostly common sense, however I've definitely been victim to marketing, trends, new shiny shiny in the past that's been totally unnecessary..... but the MAIN thing I found useful from the film was chucking stuff!!! (I wasn't doing that bit!!!)

My grandad always told me " buy the best , eventually you won't be satisfied with second best." Trouble is nowadays people won't save to buy what they need or want. Also something "better" is advertised every few weeks. Schools don't teach people to be able to discriminate any more.

Daiwa and the older Shimano reels (not the stuff covered in cheap plastic bling) Century and Harrison rods and a few other brands are still reliable for me. Other than a few brands you can trust in the rest is a lottery for me, a market full of mass produced crap 💩

For example, I have no idea how many of the top brands can justify luggage which costs almost as much or more than the equivalent item sold by Cotswold Aquarius - the quality is typically nowhere near as good.

Lets be honest what more do we need once we have the basics unless it's a set of circumstances where certain items might need changing, otherwise it's buying for the sake of it which is fine as some like to have the latest stuff.
I have very little equipment but it's tried & tested, I only change if I feel it has cost me fish or something breaks, hardly spend anything on tackle it generally goes on various baits, tickets, travel.
I do have to be careful in the tackle shop as it all looks so good!

The amount of Nash tackle that used to arrive broken at the tackle shop!
Boxes were all marked as deliver to Felixstowe Dock, then straight from the Dock to the shop.
Rods, alarms, reels, bedchairs all damaged, and stuff that wasn't was regularly returned by customers.
Personally I have only ever had 2 items of Nash gear that were any good, an Hurricane Outlaw bivvy and an Outlaw Landing net.
I have had 3 or 4 Nash rucksacks that all died before 'time', along with rod holdalls.
Broken zips, broken ties, that rather than return it was easier to repair myself, although the rucksack that split across the shoulder stitching within a few weeks was returned for replacement. It took months to replace!

I genuinely don't see the issue with Nash gear, or perhaps I've just been extremely lucky in the gear I've purchased. I've got the hide xl, which is easy to put up, sold with the wrap and I like the flexibility the add ons give you, from basically being a day shelter to full on bivvy.
Nash BP10 reels have been decent, always played fish well, OK my PB is only 37lb, low to some on here but played it well.
The only issue with Nash gear I've had is the KNX Rods, I do like them but have had the tip snap twice on me, although that could be through my own clumsiness

I suppose it's down to how you view it, and again the fact I've been 'lucky' maybe. The equipment I have has lasted a good while and served me well, yeah it's not the cheapest but if it keeps for a long time then it's worth spending the money on.

You would know better than anyone as you worked in the trade you can catch a fish on a £20 rod that's not the point it is advertised as good quality and is priced as such and it's not put speero or thinking anglers up

I go out of my way now to buy british or EU made products. I'd rather buy a 15 year old British net than a brand new Chinese one, because I know full well the Chinese one would die long before the British one needs a replacement mesh.

I am a bit of a sucker for tackle but pretty much only ever buy second hand.
On a slight tangent the buy the best in tackle is so true, but also you need to avoid the ‘matching' trap. If the best rod hold-all is Korum but the best rucksack is Cotswold, that is the new way for me. That way if something develops you are not a slave to pattern or brand. There are some shocking examples of quality in most tackle companies portfolios, along with gems.
I now have the very best bits that has taken me years to assemble, but it does mean upgrades or forced replacements mean I look just at a single item, not if it ‘fits'.
The other reason I like 2nd hand is that I use my gear, so don't need boxes, I want someone else to road test it and also I'm too tight that when I see it on offer for 50% of original price I'd be upset.

I don't have masses of gear, but what I do have is good quality stuff and I do lots of research beforehand to make sure I try to get the decision right before I buy it. I do like nice things.
I still have all my match fishing gear. All top of the range stuff, but from the 90s and 2000s. So now dated and worth a fraction of what I paid for it back then.
