In a recent trip to a new lake, I was 2 days into my session when another member walked into the swim. Got chatting as you do, about spots etc, when he said about a spot that was in a certain direction at 15 wraps out. I asked what that was in yards as I dont wrap, instead preferring to mark my lines and estimate. He couldn't work it out off the top of his head, I was too tired to be bothered, then there was a definite, quiet uncomfortable 30 secs. Am I in the dying breed of line measuring, or just abit unlucky

Tbh I like to use wraps all the time it could be 5 wraps or 20wraps I don't care, for me it's about being bang on the spot everytime if not your not going to be on the money every time, Some of my waters if your not on the spot you could be 5 yards to the right and your in 2/3 foot of weed. It's very important part of my fishing

When I said mark my line, that's what i meant, either power gum or tape. In a world of wraps, measuring in yards seem to be more and more uncommon

Yes you can, my distance sticks came with a string that runs between the 2 and has three plastics bits that you pull along to each rod, so for example 10 wraps then red, 14 wraps green etc very easy really

tie a power gum stop knot on the cord that comes with the sticks
A wrap is usually 4 yards
10 wraps=40 yards etc

I marker rod, then tape my line to mark for recasting. I have no idea how far 15 wraps is without using my phone calculator as im old school. These kids can spit out these wrap numbers faster than i could type it.
If i have two rods on the same area i might wrap the first rod for reference, then i can wrap and clip up the second.
I will always cast around my marker and drag the bottom with my fishing rod so its getting 'leaded' to check out the subtle softer/harder, choddy areas within the swim.
I like to leave the old hooklength on with a bottom bait so as i drag the bottom i can pick up any straggly bits of weed and be sure how clean the area is.

I just find wraps a lot easier to deal with. If someone said to me there's a nice spot at 84 yards I wouldn't have a clue how far that is to work out without distance sticks. But if someone said there's a spot at 17.5 wraps it's very easy to clip up at that distance
Same if I'm leading around and find a spot, I clip up, wrap out and that's my distance X amount of wraps, god knows how many yards 🤷🏻♂️ (Off the top of my head)

I use both. I just convert my wraps to yards. Measure in wraps, talk in yards.
It's 4 yards to a wrap if 12ft

15 wraps is the same as saying 15 rod lengths.
How many wraps to a pub chuck and does it make any difference if its dark?

I always used yards used to pace rods out then tie a piece of pole elastic onto the line , but I joined a small water last year and because of the nature of the banks space wise I found it awkward to use my normal way so I decided rather than spend a lot I got some ngt distance sticks got to admit I'm totally converted now much easier and I can store the wraps in my phone to snags/pads made my short sessions so much easier no more casting to the clip letting a bit more line off then pacing out.

I have witnessed a member on a lake I fish not quite understanding his 'fashionable' 10ft rods won't quite be on the spot when asking everyone else how far the spots are, and then proceeding to wrap up with his distance sticks pegged out to his rods and not a 12ft/4 yard rope.

I understand the process, but you've still got 4 ft between the marks 🤷🏻♀️
Still, each to their own eh!

Easy, just move the sticks closer and wrap without counting how many you're doing.

The toggles move along the 12ft cord, they are not fixed at 4ft intervals. So for arguments sake your chosen spot is 10 wraps and a few inches you simply move your toggle along the cord to where the rod top is. You get the exact same distance every time 👍🏻

Sorry, I might be being thick but once cast onto a spot, can't see the benefit of using sticks over a power gum marker.
Fair enough if keeping notes of features in given swims if you're fishing the same water a lot, but unless you are carrying a tape measure and noting “15 wraps plus 134cm” it's not really any more accurate than casting to pretty much the area and finding it again.

Perhaps he was also confused as if you wrap something like a parcel you go all the way around.
A wrap would then be about 6 metres in his book which would be far more logical.

One huge benefit of using sticks is that I can arrive in my swim an hour before dawn, set up to (as an example) 11.5 wraps (I have these noted in my phone from previous trips) to go under the far bank trees and get my rod in position first cast with the absolute minimal disturbance ready for the feeding time at dawn. How do I do this with line markers (assuming I fished a different swim last time so would have different markers on my rod)?
Line markers work most of the time but distance sticks work all the time

That's what I'm getting at - I get the arriving at a swim with the distance already noted and using sticks, what I don't get is people still wrapping during a session - surely it's easier/quicker to just use a power gum marker?

I much prefer to always fish the same distance, for example 40 yards, then if the spot is 10 yds out I simply walk back 30 yards out of my swim and cast from there, hey presto, I'm on the mark. It is a bit of a pain at this time of the year when I have to swim out 20 yards to get to my 60 yard spot, but it does make it easier than worrying about whether I need to move my line markers.

Problem with line markers is you can't cast to the clip on the next cast unless you clip up tight to the lead before winding in. Not possible if you have had a fish and possibly innacurate if you are fishing over weed and or features. I usually do both.

Problem with the power gum marker is...as someone said earlier you have to walk your line out on the bank which is not always easy or cast out past the marker and then put the line into the clip.....fine if you have no one in the next swim so you can cast away from your area and clip up...otherwise you have to cast back into your own swim.....I try to keep disturbance on the lake to a minimum as I only do short sessions and it spooks the fish.....at least it does on the lake I am fishing where there aren't many anglers so the fish just drift off to a quiet area....

Agreed 👍 mine have these too makes life very easy, if your brand of sticks don't , something similar would be easy to make, or just place a rock or stick in the ground to mark the distance between a full wrap.

Is it really a problem? Or is it now a problem because you use sticks? Surely if you dont want to cast back into the area where you think fish are present, you drop short and peel the line off to the marker

Surely if you find your spot, clip up, tie the powergum on at a certain point say in line with the butt ring, you'll be on the same spot every time? Then it won't ever matter if you're measuring yards, feet, willy lengths or thumbs.... either way you always tell the visitor that you're fishing five wraps short of where you really are. I don't get why people are so adamant on over complicating trying to catch a carp.

Ok Andy,
I'll fess up straight away, old school idiot......
Don't understand the wrap stuff at all.
1 wrap seems to be based on one length of a rod whether it be 9, 10, 11, 12 or 13ft, on top of this I still haven't figured out if a wrap is the distance between the sticks or from one stick to the other and back as the convention seems to differ.
I think it's a good system, but not a standard
For me a yard is a yard and my little golfy machine with powegum suits my style

Say you're spot is 10 rod lengths out (but you don't know that it's 10 rod lengths yet) and you've cliped up to that spot - let's just use rod lengths for now, could be anything you want, bees wings or length in Mars bars if you wanted - you wrap.your line around two sticks that are equal to the length of rod you're using...10 times and you'll hit the the clip. 10 rod lengths, a thousand bees wings, 500 Mars bars. That's all there is to it.

10 wrap advice could mean anything, 80 yards is pretty specific

You do the calculations for however long your rods are, you know? To do the calculation for 80yds for 12ft rods, it's 80 ÷ 4 = 20 12ft rod lengths/wraps
11ft rods = 3.67yds
10ft rods = 3.3yds
9ft rods = 3yds and so on

It's just modern terminology mate. A yard will always be a yard, it's just that bods wrapping their lines around banksticks or marker sticks will use the term wraps instead of rod lengths (20 wraps = 20 rod lengths) regardless of how long your rod is.

Consensus is the key as you say. If you want to use wraps to inform other people EVERYONE has to use the same value. It seems 12 ft is the accepted length, its easy to wrap up at that length with any length of rod, you can usually find a spot to set up your sticks in or near your swim. If you can't do the sums in your head, use your phone, wraps to yards ×4, yards to wraps ÷4. My vote is for 12ft = 1wrap. Doesn't matter in the slightest how long your rod is.
If you use inches to measure your cock, whatever the length, an inch is still an inch and wrap is still a wrap.

So for us oldies who walk our line out in the old fashioned way does that mean that 20 wraps on a 12 foot rod equals 1x walk out?
What if your walk is measured in chains or furlongs. What if you're furloughed?
Is Nashy missing a trick not flogging 9',10' sticks to match his short rods?
“How far out are you fishing grandad”.....”Oh about 500 cubits sonny”.....
This carping lark is very complex

Not really, a wrap is 12' / 4 yards. That's how long the cord is on the ones I've seen/use. I only recently came back into fishing, wraps didn't exist when I packed in but I find them simply easier to use. No walking lines out, no casting out and taping/powergum on lines. Just stand there and wrap up to the required distance, it's so easy.

One trick if you want to be secret squirrel and put people off the scent of your hotspots is to put your sticks at 11ft, then if they sneakily watch you wrap up and count the wraps to make sure they can copy you, they will be a few yards out over any half decent distance.
You can also move someone's distance sticks when they're not looking to put them off their hotspot however be prepared for that to backfire when they unwittingly catch a monster just off their baited patch, without even knowing it!

I did that once, unfortunately I once wasn't paying attention and back wound and fell in the lake.
One day I'll get my head round this idea of using a rod length to mark out the distance between your measuring sticks. I have a length of cord, 5 yards long and a bead positioned every yard. It's just a simple case of, getting the sticks out of the holdall, stick one in ground, pull the cord tight between the two and push the other in the ground. Job done. No fannying about laying a rod on the ground and risking damaging it if your a clumsy sod like me and far easier multiplying things by 5 instead of 4 and adding the yards measured between the sticks and thinking yards instead of wraps and not having to worry about using different rod lengths. A simple thing is over complicatated.

I really don't Understand why people are struggling with the idea of how this works? It's irrelevant on how long yours rods are aslong as you put the distance sticks the same width apart, it's still the same amount of like coming off the spool.
80yards is still 20wraps on 10/11 or 12ft rods aslong as your distance sticks are 12ft apart which is the standard distance used with the cord that comes with them.

Well I'm old skool I guess..
When I visit or fish a new venue,I generally have a walk round..yep,in my mind I'm gravitating towards that area,ah...the waters a bit stirred up here, few bubbles coming up..,that'll do me...lol
Or on the big ressies I fish ,I think...them all casting out a very long way possibly over the fish as well,ahaaa...I know I shall fish the areas most overcast on,get a bit of freebie out there...wait,over the far margin is a wind turbine, that's my night marker, the red dot above the blades, whip out the marker elastic, mark it up job done...
Or....I just use my innermost intuition, borne of fifty yrs of course angling..
Works for me,as I've got older...I'm out to enjoy the experience, the weather, the wildlife and so on...a fish, and believe me I catch my fair share is a bonus...

One trick if you want to be secret squirrel and put people off the scent of your hotspots is to put your sticks at 11ft
PMSL
In the desperate and devious world of modern carp fishing, the successful angler has 50 pairs of binoculars pointing at him and everybody is trying to count the number of wraps and see what tree he is lined up with
I can believe it, I can see the line of buckets behind his tent now

Put mine 6ft apart, saves time wrapping up, essentially useful on quick over nighters, and of course has doubled the distance I can cast without wasting money on lessons and massive expensive distance rods.

45 wraps for me with baited rig, 10ft 3lbtc scopes.

I suppose 'rod lengths' is rubbish now.
wife. ' so how big was the back garden?'
me ' I dunno. wider than it was deep. maybe 3 rod lengths long and 12 wide'

Can't believe that there are so many posts on this. How many wraps to Mornington Crescent?
Wraps is just another fashionable reinventing the wheel obvious result of the massive financial marketing machine in which it joins the ranks of a endless list of product based fads but every once in a while some of these products actually are of practical use but always suffer from an over inflated out pouring of praise, people are paid to invent products that are purely aimed at relieving anglers of as much money as possible. A fine example was the marketing machine that led to massive sales of fluorocarbon by the way of brainwashing many into the overuse of slack lining trends, basically nothing new but anglers getting wrapped up with wraps!

This thread was pointless enough without using it as an excuse to have a pop at "modern carp fishing" imo mate.

Like most I have tried most things over the years, stop knots etc. I used insulation tape on the line for a long time, wrap it round, squeeze it on and cut it back, easy to remove too
I have used the distance sticks, nothing ventured nothing gained for me. In the right circumstances I find them very good, especially when fishing to holes our clear sections in weed. I don't use a marker rod, just lead around, when I have found the spot, just clip up and count the number of wraps to the spot on the sticks
Do I use them all the time, no. I think anybody who has fished for a while is capable of hitting the spot or as close too it as required up to 100yds even in the dark, or I believe I can
I think they are better when session fishing. I seem to see most of the spodding gang using them, don't do a lot of this in my fishing
Same as spodding though, you need to ensure your line is tight on your spools or you get the birds nests ffs

I just aim at where my last splash was.... assuming I don't tree it.

I bet your catching all the big special ones that are not eating a wheelbarrow full of spodded bait at 26.32459 wraps

I would usually start with Paddington, hoping to trap an opponent with the Colliers Wood method. How many wraps,do you think?

I'm a bit stunned as it seems as a result of this morning's festivities I'm now the owner of a pair of distance sticks lol, merry Xmas all.

How does this all relate to people using poles to put bait out? You could be fishing at 6 sections with one manufacturer, which could be 8 from another?

Find your own spots. Non existent problem solved.

Decide where you want to fish then find a spot. Mark it up yourself. No need to worry about what anyone else tells you in terms of distance or wraps
Follow the sheep = worry about wraps

Absolutely not - if someone says “6 sections towards the oak tree” its not telling you how far is it?

Only a punisher will ask how many sections or wraps so you entitled to tell them whatever you want.

I have taken pub chucking to the next level.
I can do it with my eyes closed.
Took me hours to perfect that.

If somebody asked me "how many wraps?" I would struggle to answer as I rarely use wraps, and I am not bad at estimating distance.
My first 'warm-up' cast to a marker float or even towards a tree line is often bang on the money, so I clip up on that, if I am short, no problem to creep up. I stop it if it looks like going too far.
The line then gets a power gum stop knot so I can get back on target.
On my syndicate, I do have the space to walk it out on the bank, and in the past on enclosed swims, when I have used 'distance sticks' I found I got increased line twist.
I do love those who use distance sticks on public access and footpaths, leaving something extra to trip over. The number of times I have not seen them, kicked them accidentally must be in the hundreds.
I did get amusement someone on the local park lake using distance sticks, every male dog that came past was cocking his leg and peeing over them.😆

I used to always fish like that with but with tape as a marker but after the lakes started getting weedy which often makes the line very curly or slightly damaged after catching fish which i feel needs to be cut back, the marking line method then isn't as good as marker sticks which no matter how many times i cut the line back i will always quickly get back onto the spot.
If the lakes i fish are clear of weed and the line doesn't need to be cut back i still use the marker tape but i will measure the distance on my distance sticks and log it down so i can quickly mark up at any time of day or night when returning to the swim.
