Somebody has to moan about it.

Personally, on my PC, I don't like it, two different sized fonts with a big difference in size between the two, and some of both in bold or greyed out text, its causing havoc with my eyes with them having to constantly focus on the different texts.

Plus, I can only see a few posts at a time so I'm having to do more scrolling than I used to do, I used to be able to just sit back and see virtually every post especially the new posts without scrolling much before turning to the next page if I had too. To increase the amount of posts visible, I'm having to zoom out to 60%.

And just checking it on the mobile phone, once again, too much scrolling to go through the posts is needed to make it a pleasurable experience. Just seeing a maximum of 6 posts on the screen to me is rubbish.

Think I will be giving it more of a miss, than just reguarly having a look quiet often.

Glad that the new UI has been met with, mostly, positive thoughts.

Now that I have got my finger out and reengineered it all, I am currently in the mood for doing more developement work and adding features.

@Zack: Totally agree that everything it NOT perfect. I have spent quite a lot of time surfing and tweaking colours etc but most days I see a page and wonder WTF I was thinking, and try to make it better. So please do point out anything that's pants, it's in everyone's interests for me to make it better and I am happy to do so.

I you prefer the 25 year old design as it works better for your needs, that's cool...I have left the old site running here:
LINKY POO™ http://old.carpforum.co.uk

Both sites (User Interfaces) point to the same database, so you can read/post to your hearts content on the old UI if that's what you want.
The only thing I will have to do is disable the PM sending on the old site as I rewrote the PM system and so old/new are not compatible, sorry (the new one is much better though, you'll thank me once you've used it a bit) πŸ‘
I intend to leave the old PM ssytem in place on the old site for reading historical PMs, I am doing my best to ensure that you guys don't lose any functionality or info whilst offering you a choice of 2 sites to use.

Whilst re-writing the site a couple weeks ago I did actually have multiple Topics page layouts and multiple Message page layouts. You could pick whichever layout you liked best from the settings page. Some were more spacious, some more cramped. After a few days of tweaking they all started to look very similar and so I ended up with just two of each.
If you surf the site on your mobile you might notice the pages are called TopicsMobile.asp and MessagesMobile.asp
Whereas on a bigger screen you surf using TopicsDesktop.asp and MessagesDesktop.asp

Once the virtual dust has settled on the new design I'll try and get some new templates done again, but better (less rushed!) this time and then you can decide which works best for your chosen surfing device(s) and set it in Settings.

If anyone spots any bugs, of things they don't like feel free to send them to me via PM (on new flavour site) or via iMessage/WhatsApp if it's easier for screenshots/photos to 07463 284728

I am not offended by criticism, all I have been doing for the last couple weeks is criticising it myself trying to gradually make it better day by day

I personally like it.
I hardly ever post that often, but I’m going to try and change that.
I do always look in a few times a day though to get my fix.
Thanks for keeping on with it, this is the only form of social media I use apart from an email account, so nice to see what’s new e.t.c

I think that if this was a new Forum I was visiting I would probably not think anything of it, but after 20 years it’s a bit of a shock, takes a bit of getting used to. I suppose it’s a bit like after 20 years of marriage to the woman who had your three kids and spent most of her life working her tits off then waking up next to her and she’s a slim blond bimbo. Not at all bad but a bit of a shock and unfamiliar. Those of you who use Tackle-Trader and remember the original blue layout, then the green and now the white with rating stars, search functions etc will probably know what I mean. It’s an evolution but still takes some getting used to.

I don’t think I’ll return to the old format. I’ll muddle through this one until it becomes second nature.

Great to see you have managed to get it migrated across without loosing everything Karlos πŸ˜‚

I know first hand that a lot has gone into this in the background before getting to this point.

The change is for the good of the site for the future years to come, some people don't like change.. its understandable, but support it by flagging any issues or feeding back any suggestions to Karlos.

I have clicked the reply button on your post, so this message will start with that information, but if I wanted to highlight something specific from your post (I'll do it now) I go and select the text (as I write this I can see your post above) and then hit the 'Quote selection' button

Quote: Agreed after 20 years it was a shock

and so now it sticks the word quote, does some italics and normally I would be replying to the subject matter in the bit I had quoted.

So long story short, it does what it always used to do, but you have the opportunity to quote specific sections of a users message without having to manually go copy/paste/italicize etc

I think it looks great...just one question, any plans to make posting pics a lot less complicated? It has completely defeated me so far, but on other sites it's a piece of cake...you don't even have to upload to a storage site, you can take straight from your PC.

Lovely and modern new UI. The only thing I'm missing (or haven't spotted if the feature is still there) is the ability to select a load of threads and mark them all as 'read'. Used this quite a lot previously.

Has this gone (a) temporarily, (b) for good or (c) am I a dolt and it's still there but I can't find it!

Yes, I have already done the upload code and it works from a PC / iPad / mobile phone etc.
I use it for uploading users profile pics.
The plan was to have this as one of the features you get with 'CarpForum Premium' along with zero Google Ads.

What I need to do is decide on some of the background processes for users to upload.
Do the pictures need to be moderated/viewed before being public (probably no, easier to just delete any rotten posts and ban the user)
Do I store the pictures in an individual area per user
How much space have I got on the server before it's full or I have to buy extra storage (expense to me)
Shall I also allow video (I think yes, but maybe that can come along afterwards)

No doubt more techy questions will emerge as I start work on it like what quality to store the image at, what size/dimensions.

Watch this space πŸ‘ 😎

You're not a dolt. I never brought these across as I wasn't sure if anybody actually used it.
You can mark whole forums as read with the 'eye with a line through it' in the right hand column of the homepage.
I hadn't noticed that I never added that functionality to the topic listing page, that should be easy enough to do, icon per line so you can mark them as read. Doing the multi-select and mark them all as read would mean I'd have to change how that page works quite a bit, I'll have a think, watch this space 😎

Easier if the videos are already on those platforms yes.
If it's just a quick video of someone going arse-over-tit as they run to their rods, maybe not.

I think that it's great. Much better already and I've only used it for five minutes.

The added bonus is that the 132 unread PM's have all vanished. πŸ˜‚

100% create a subscription Karl. I'd just make everyone pay personally. We all use the forum a lot. The amounts being spoken about are nothing, people spend more on a coffee or some hooks. We could even have a slush fund set aside to pay the subs of those that cannot afford it. I will happily contribute to that too.

Thanks for the thanks πŸ™

I'm continually tweaking to try and make things better.
All feedback appreciated

There's always little bits I spot that I can do to try and streamline things or make them more usuable.
For example, when entering a topic with unread messages it might say
"2 new posts" and then have the yellow "Jump to new" button
So I just combined the 2 to save screen space, now we just have the button saying "Jump to 2 new posts"

I need to spend more time refining the mobile UI
I had a stab it it, but most of my time is spent on PCs with big monitors or hi-res laptops so those screens have got most attention so far πŸ‘

Karl, when using the "read next" site button, I'm finding it doesn't work unless I actually read the new posts, I can't just skip past them to a thread I want to read.

I should also add that I view old posts first so when I press the read new posts it only takes me to the bottom of page 1 if the thread has multiple pages.

Fair play.... cheers for the work.

Always end of an era nostalgia to see old sites and formats go but things must move on. New site seems crisp and clean.

And the adds on the side seem to be normal adds for general fishing/man stuff. I was always getting ladies underwear adds and pics that made it tad sketchy having a look on the forum in public before πŸ˜‚

I removed all Google Ads whilst building the new site.
Last night I got around to putting them back on.

Yes, they are a pain in the ass but they pay for about 30% of the server costs each month (I pay the other 70% out my own pocket)

If you preferred the site how it was (Google Ad free) and think the site gives you Β£10 worth of value a year then if you buy Premium all the Google Ads are removed.
LINKY POO™ https://www.carpforum.co.uk/Premium.asp

Alternatively you can install an Ad Blocker πŸ‘

I don't want anyone to have to suffer those annoying ads, but from my point of view it's a necessary evil in order to contribute to the running of the site. I've been paying the bulk of the hosting costs out of my own pocket for years now.

Anyhow, I'm repeating myself, I'll shut up πŸ˜€

One of a few benefits and maybe some treats left to come.

Talking of advertising, the picture ads on the right of the screen, tip for ya all, if any of them are a place you do or will buy anything from, please follow from the banners. If you buy something after clicking through the banner Karlos should get a small commission and it costs you absolutely nothing. As per the below message explanation from Karlos, the site costs money to keep going, all these pictures and videos hosted by the site will add some storage costs and I reckon every little helps πŸ˜‰πŸ‘

Sorry Karl, I know you're not making a deal of costs etc. but in case this helps people support you and the forum for free from them (premium or not) then it can't hurt to mention it lol

Pop ups adverts at bottom of screen are a pain, every time click on a page it opens a half screen advert. Then the reply at the top takes other half up.

Does premium allow me to upload pictures without using a 3rd party site?

Yes πŸ‘

You'll get a camera button top of your message/post box, to 'attach' a photo from your device, the photo will be hosted on the forum server.
There's also a gallery button so you'll have quick access to pics you've already uploaded to the forum

Really impressed with Premium membership deal, well worth a tenner in my view. πŸ‘

Glad you are happy πŸ‘

Venues section is coming along (I will put the link/icon in the header today and the text link in the hamburger menu)

There's the ability to add a venue yourself, so if your favourite venue isn't listed and you want it to be add it. You can set it to private and then only you will see it on the map with a gold/yellow pin rather than blue.

Fill in as much info as you like and then as you can see from this screenshot you can choose if the venue is public/private (private meaning only you can see it)

Also, as a Premium member you can tick that last checkbox and the venue you've added shows on your weather page for convenience

To be honest I don't find the adverts much of a problem but I've paid for Premium to show my support. πŸ‘

Thanks, profile updated to Premium. Bye bye Google Ads and hopefully you'll enjoy the extra features. There's been a few more images/videos etc uploaded by the Premium members now it's so easy to do

Glad I paid for premium, the adverts were getting very annoying, taking up all of the screen space. Best Β£10 I’ve spent for a while

Sorry if there was a slight delay, it’s not automated at the moment, I have to manually add it when I see the email come through. You’re all set up now πŸ‘
