What's your thoughts on this, daft rules or protecting their stock?

Can only use, hooks, weights and bait etc that has been provided by the lake owner.

Three tiny overstocked garden ponds. What this has to do with proper carp fishing is beyond me. 45 carp in half an acre. Poor bloody fish.

Few ways of looking it I suppose.

If you were being hopeful, you would suggest the lake owner is concerned about the welfare of their fish and is doing everything he sees fit to make sure that they stay safe, whether all agree with it or not

Of course, there is the other option that either money or a lack of knowledge and customer trust has swayed them towards putting these rules in place without realizing it will put a lot of customers off with no benefit to the fish or fishery.

Looking at the rules, a sponsorship is clearly in place, all the rules seem to be well intentioned but I wouldn't be likely to fish there myself, I think an element of trust has to be in place between the people running the lake and the people fishing it.

Complete over the top over regulation ..!

It's like they want your money ,but really don't want you there..other places to go..maybe a body search before you fish and a check on your implanted chip..

Given it seems the custodians of the lakes are Pallatrax and you are only allowed to use their Bait, Hooks and Stonze they obviously believe these are the best rules for them, or business model.

It's the same owner of the tackle and lakes. I know he truly believes that their hooks are far safer for the fish and that the Stonz weights are far better for the environment than traditional leads. This has always been the Pallatrax business model so no surprise that it has transferred to the lakes. The bait rule is the main one I do not like. Any lake that puts that in clearly do so from a lack of trust perspective (I believe this is the case more than making money) and is the rule that tends to keep me away from venues more than any other. As said, if you don't like the rules, don't fish there and I am sure lake owners are fully aware that whatever rules they put in place will split the crowd

I struggle to see who the lake is targeted towards. I would guess novice anglers, as I doubt anyone with any experience would wish to fish using hooks and bait that they are not used too, but the rules make it quite expensive, which would surely put off novice anglers.

I think it's more daft that you have to use a minimum of 14 inches of tubing but also are allowed to use leadfree leaders. The two dont work together, or at least there is no need to thread a leadfree leader through tubing.

Funnily enough ,a lake owner I know well, was approached by Pallatrax ,this pool is a stonking awesome crucian water ..

Luckily ,it fell through,the sale..

Pallatrax need to be careful because those rules actually disservice angling in some ways ,it's almost on the vestiges of not trusting ,angling,it's ethos and any potential customers..

I like to try different places somewhere like this ,has put me off straight away..

Thinking Pallatrax have some strong ethical views ,however if they really cared about the fish you'd not open it to the public..possibly..

I don't think they mean you have to put the leader through some tubing as that would be impossible. You can use either but if using tubing must use minimum of 14 inches. That's how i read it anyway

I'm not that far from these and a friend mentioned it, after I had a look I won't ever be fishing there not only is it well over stocked and stupid rules but the cost put me off!
From what I could see it's around £50 per 24hrs per angler, I looked at 2 days for 2 of us in April and was charging us £200 😮 I ain't paying that for the type of fishing or the stock

I know they approached several other lakes looking to sponsor them in return that they would bring in similar rules to this lake. Didn't they sponsor the SWLT in some way at some point?

I believe this lake here is fenced, I understand its tidy with nice facilities etc.

It says ALL angler MUST use minimum 14" of tubing.

I read this is that you HAVE to use it...so no idea why there is a leadfree leader rule too

Yes,they had tackle n bait in upper Tamar ,plus..the sponsored signs on the gates ,entrance by the car park..

These Gripz hooks...OK I bought some ,I have caught a few on them various waters ,including my place as well,...they made no difference in anyway shape or form to penetrative excellence, and yesterday at another water not far away from the aforementioned I caught a carp with this Gripz it didn't fare well, its a clever marketing gimmick to offset any potential future legislation or similar I believe ..or the designers own personal agenda..or outlook..

I have binned the Gripz pattern, and along with a few other places I have read about I won't be recommending them indeed some places have stopped them being used..

So let's look at this objectively, it's expensive very...overt rules ,a barren looking hole in the ground...urban mindset angling .....

Plus from my own point of view ,I have the same genetic stock as do many other local waters ...

Simply put its overkill...and uber expensive ,like a lot of others I have spoken to ,they will cater for those who think this is carp angling ..

Time will tell if its successful or no...

As a pike angler I was actually concerned about sponsored anglers writing about using large single Gripz catfish hooks in 1/0 and 2/0 for pike fishing. It has been debated within the Pike Anglers Club UK for years, I am a member, and the consensus is that trebles are better for the pikes welfare.

Large single hooks can put more pressure on a single point than a treble, in cases going up into the skull, and beyond. It's safer for the pike to fish with normal sized treble hooks than a large single.
It may be that a single hook is an attempt to reduce personal angler risk of cuts or supposedly avoiding deep hooking than actual care of the fish.

Now as a point of note, no matter how quickly you strike, at some point you will get a deep hooked fish that has swallowed the bait. Learn to deal with it safely.

As anglers in dealing with rules of a fishery you have a choice, fish there and abide them or don't fish there.
I know what I think about the MD of the said company, while I agree with some of his views, the way he has made his points within the industry I don't think has won him many friends.

A friend of mine got a temporary ban for sleeping on his rods at the wrong time of day. This was in the Czech Rep and you can only sleep at certain points of the day / night and unfortunately he nodded off at the wrong time and the bailiff turned up.

I fish on a syndicate stretch of the Trent leased by the Barbel society. The only members of the public you ever see are dog walkers, but anglers aren't allowed to take dogs. There is a reason though, apparently an anglers dog attacked another dog a few years ago and the marsh society who own the land then put a clause into the lease.

Shame as I've got a dog who I'd love to take with me.

I actually worked my way through the list, and to be honest, there are other lakes with rules that are more stringent than these, most of the rules do actually seem very sensible, like alcohol in moderation, and no illegal drugs.

I take it the ones that bug you are only using fishery supplied baits, particles and boilies supplied by the fishery?

The particle rule is actually quite sensible, it means that particles are properly prepared, and raw particles are not a danger to carp.

Boilies; I'm not sure where I read it, (quite possibly Pallatrax bumpf) but the ingredients used are biodegradable, and the boilies themselves will break down in water.

The weights rule, using Stonze, again, responsible'ish. It means that no drop-off leads pollute the water. Stonze may not cast long distances, (not needed on such a small water), but long casting is not needed everywhere.

Hooks, having to use the Gripz hooks, open to debate. I do not know the mouth damage of a Gripz vs a crimped or standard barbed, and I do think barbless may cause additional damage.

The 'braided' hooklink rule, to prevent cheek or scissor damage, that is covered by having a shrink tubing kicker or line aligner (a presumption that line aligners are acceptable as doing the same job as a kicker).

At the end of it, the rules do look like Simon Pomeroy is trying to protect his stock.

My club lakes have banned that free fall leader material from Rigmarole. When I inquired with the club the reason behind it. They said the in metal wire coil could unwind and cause a problem. I'm only assuming this was through experience. Anybody else had any problem with this material?

Tethered carp have been retrieved from snags with the leader material present, so they banned in instantly.

Same with metal framed cradles. They have caused rib damaged when flipping/dropped.

My last syndy had several 'rules' that were fiercely enforced - tubing only was one of them but the rigmarole stuff was openly encouraged . . .!

No leaders of any description (including PVA bag stems)
Tubing only at least 1m length
No leads over 1.5oz (any set up - eg clip / running / heli)
Leads over 1.5oz only allowed if used with MCF Dumper clip (no other brands / clips allowed)
Barbed / Micro Barbed hooks only
No Ronnie Rigs / Spinner Rigs
1kg house pellet (supplied free issue) had to be introduced every 24hrs
Nets / Slings / Cradles (all supplied) had to be thoroughly cleaned at end of session and returned to hut on numbered rack (woe betide you mistook a 6 for 9)
All captures graffed (both sides) and weights recorded and captured in book in hut on completion of sessions

to your point re Rigmarole the coils can be exposed if the outer braid is damaged / rubbed through but I've been using this stuff for some time and this has only happed once; at which point like most sensible anglers it was immediately replaced . . .

Small club I'm a member of in suffolk have some interesting ones as it's run by a load of old boys from the match fishing scene

- max 1oz lead
- running rigs only, no heli's, lead clips or semi fixed inlines
- max 1kg bait per angler per day
- max size 10 hooks
- no ‘mass baiting devices' including spods, spombs, baiting poles

Luckily now there are more carp anglers on the committee than match guys so we are going to get the rules amended

I used it a couple of times then stopped after I had personal concerns with it. Once the heat shrink falls off the end, it leaves the metal bit exposed. I was a bit worried about it damaging the line.

One daft rule springs to mind is on barbless only rule fisheries (which I strongly agree with), where crushed Barbed hooks are not allowed! . If you crush a barbed hook down properly, it is barely noticable under a microscope, point being it won't affect Carp getting rid of hook.

I don't understand this one myself. I just think some people just like being awkward. As far as I'm concerned if a hook hasn't a barb it's " barbless " no matter whether it weren't there in the first place or you removed it yourself.

Up in Devon I fished a water ,that had the 'jumper test'..bailiff, owner would do infrequent rig checks ,anyway ....what he'd do is stick the hook being used ,into his thick woollen jumper ,if it couldn't be removed ..

If the barb has been filed away then the hook is indeed barbless. As Sam said, if you accept crushed barbs there will always be those who deliberately don't crush the barb completely. Nothing to do with people being awkward IMO, just wanting their rules adhered to.

That makes sense to me. Some hooks seem massive compared to others in the same size. It just rules out all loopholes. Forinstance when they ban longshank hooks, and people then use patterns that are clearly long shank, but don't have it written on the packet.

Quite simple in my view - if you don't agree with the fishery rules, don't fish there. I can think of a couple of waters I'd like to fish, but since the owners insist on some pretty daft rules, well, their loss, as I'll take my money elsewhere.

That's the reason you do rig checks. ( at sensible times of course )

Other daft rules I've come across are. No unhooking mates and no bivvies. This is from a club water I fish. Luckily these rules are no longer in place. The club at the time were very match oriented and had a bit of an anti carp angler agenda.

Quick answer (don't have time right now) ...
With a semi-fixed lead clip set up you are relying on the lead (hanging down off the lead clip), to catch something in the lake and get stuck to discharge it.
Long shot!

That really depends on the weight of the lead and how you set the tail rubber.

Makes no difference if the lead doesn't snag.
And most of us won't set the tail rubber too loose in case of a loss lead on impact.
Heavier lead = more mouth damage... give 'em an eight ounce lead... in some lakes by the time they find a snag the mouth will be totally f*cked if the lead even comes off . ( the lead clip system will probably be encumbered by weed and silt to an extent to inhibit it's release) , too a much worse extent than the the snapped line end.
Irony or what
'Semi fixed' lead clips in conjunction with barbed hooks is the best thing ever invented to create
Parrot mouthed Carp.
Chew on that one to all you 'semi fixed' lead clips fan boys.

I can tell you from experience that a 6oz lead on a properly set lead clip, dropped on a clean spot will eject on the take with no mouth damage. The lead does not need to snag on anything. You just have to use the correct equipment, set up correctly for the situation and conditions.

Lol, BS. I can tell you from experience the leads don't always come off, unless you are willing to lose the leads on the cast impact. e.g totally loose tail rubber which most anglers won't be using anyway.
When the fish shakes the pressure is more on the swivel\clip .. the lead just folds back.
If you push the tail rubber on properly (wetted and enough to stay on the cast \ impact) some fish can't shake the lead off until mouth damage is done. (with a barbed hook)

I'm talking about a specific situation where you can drop a heavy lead on a spot that you can see and feel it to the bottom without the surface impact of a cast . This might be dropping in the edge, wading out and dropping or dropping from the side of a boat. If you set the tail rubber up correctly then you will eject the lead on the take. That is a fact that anyone who does this type of fishing will know.

You are only referring to your own experience of generic carp fishing where you cast from a bank.

Nobody has mentioned the mcf style dumper clips. They need a PVA wrap to cast, but always drop the lead.

Quickly...
Free running rig (no lead clip) or if you want to use a lead clip, make sure it's not fixed \ semi-fixed (both the same - it's fixed! ) .
In other words don't lock it to the swivel. (peg or otherwise.)
Squeeze the swivel down so the lead clip can pop off with slight resistance.
Basically a free running rig with a lead clip.
Heli rig another option, done right of course.
I know where this will go, and I know what the stupid argument is for a fixed lead clip, and we had a massive 4 page topic on it years ago.
But fixed lead clips are one of the worst ideas ever. Not just the from the Carp's mouth point of view, but also the bite indication.
BTW, it all doesn't matter if you use a barbless hook.

Let me get this right, you are associating mouth damage to the carp picking up your bait, getting hooked, and shaking its head with a lead on?

Nothing to do with playing the fish, pulling the opposite way to where its trying to swim, and pulling it at various different angles during the fight, the hook maybe slipping as the hook hold wasnt great?

Before anyone starts, we all try our best not to cause any mouth damage to the fish, but sometimes, the hook is going to slip and move about. There are so many factors that you cant control.

The lake I fish has some really daft rules:

We can fish only one rod
barbless hook or barb crashed down (I completely agree with this one)
Not any type of boat allowed,
1 kilo of bait (boilie or particle no matter, but only one kilo) per day,
we can't set up a brolly even if the sky is pouring down everything (only umbrella allowed)
In March all fishing closed for (trouts?) spawning
Close season between may 15th to June 30th, this time the close season is for carp's spawn (the time's Carps spawn there happens almost every year in July, but they don't know) but only by night, during daylight we can fish for Carps, very odds.

But what happened recently has something incredible, at least to me: a guy was fishing a signed "night-fishing-hallowed-swim" and the fishing police (I don't know how I could call it, maybe bailiff, but here in Italy they are a branch of one kind of police) turned up with their pistols hanged off the belt and after they checked the fishing license and the hook (obviously the only rod that's fishing he had been forced to reel in to check it out if the barb is present) they come up with an unexpected news: they told him that if the angler fished by night he needs a rubbery landing net, instead for day fishing the classic landing net we always utilise it's up for the job, as (for them) night fishing is apt for catch and release and there's need of a rubbery net.
