Me I own 2 basia customs and 2 diawa ninja for my dwarf 6' travel rods and a shimano spod reel that's all I need
My brother who's a tiddler basher (match fisherman) has around 15-20 reels.

They nice reels my son is into the old Daiwas,he's got a lifetime supply,...we two ends of the stick,he's a maximus ,I'm a minimalus..

I did have a massive want on for some baboons once,he's got those as well,..I seen yellow baboons converted ones ..the other day..

It goes against the general opinion but i do prefer a rear drag and a pop off spool and Shimano rules here imo (especially if want a Baitrunner) and are what I prefer to for most of my carp/specimen fishing.

The Drennans have become a firm second favourite of mine if i want a fixed spool on a float rod or light leger rod. I like that they come with multiple shallow spools.

For anything bigger than the X-Aeros I am much more open to other brands. Shimano just lose traction in quality here imo. The Fox reels have been great and the Okuma Inc 6000 are amazing reels for the money

I'd like to say that a few years ago when the older daiwa stuff began to get cool, I decided to start collecting by raiding Japan on eBay. I don't know what I have spent on purchasing and then converting but I know for example I got 3 x GS35's brand new with boxes for £200 ish imported. The conversation with spools would have been maybe £180 and now they would be worth in excess of £1000. So I would imagine if and when I come to sell I will have made a £ or ££ 🫢

No accurate idea but estimate around 100, maybe more. I rarely sell any but did move on some pricey Lamsons a couple of years ago, bought for bonefish but didn't happen. I have my 2 grandfather's collections plus a couple of my father's multipliers, all modern reels I've bought since early 80's, 501, 2 x 506's, 440a's, plenty of daiwa match reels, 5 Rimfly's, 3 Orvis large arbor fly reels, 4 mgs xsa, 4 power aero 14k, 4 emblem pro's, 3 xtd, 3 xtb, 3 8k gte's, 2 x 5k gt's, 3 Mitchell 3550 trigger drag if any one remembers them? Only 1 pin so far but will no doubt add at some point maybe a youngs or similar. The thing I like is that they all bring memories back to me, especially the old ones, much more so than the rods they were used with.. I was very fond of the 506's but find them too small these days, preferring a pin. Mainly using mgs xsa and power aero for carp no plan to try anything else, these do the job perfectly imo.. If I did get the opportunity again to fly fish the flats for bonefish I'd definitely aquire another litespeed though, or a Hardy etc..

£600 is hardly inexpensive for a fly reel IMO..

Agreed ,think I paid five for mine but there are so many cheaper reels claiming to be salt water reels because they have a sealed drag but don't have decent corrosion resistant proofing. The thing is with any of them when you buy a spare spool and a couple of lines you've more than doubled the price.

It adds up for sure! These reels are a work of art especially these days when CNC tech is getting better every year, reels are becoming lighter and funkier looking but I reckon an Orvis Hydros for example would be more than adequate for the job unless you happen to spend several weeks a year chasing those types of fish.. Your Abel must have been in this top tier I'd imagine?

Yes the able is a grand now but mine is thirty years old and I only bought the lamson after breaking a thirty plus year old rod and replacing it with a Scott sector which is so much lighter the able felt far to heavy on it and will now go on a fourteen foot #8/9 when I get it. Did look at the orvis but I don't think it has the same level of corrosion resistance and I will be doing a lot more bass and seatrout fishing from now on.
