Is any one else just browsing through various fishing tackle websites and purchasing unnecessary tackle....

I done it last night whilst the missus was watching something or other on Netflix... Just realised I've spent 70 of the queens finest on items I didn't really want or need....

I have a bad habit on clicking on sale / clearance sections and adding bits to my basket....my particular Achilles heel is hooks, I've got more hooks than the local tackle shop...I always pick up a pack or two with every purchase whether that be on line in in person in an actual shop...

Just done 250 on lead moulds lead and coatings.
But like my jig heads I'll make to sell.

As me and my mrs cant open our shop atm and I cant fish I need something to do. So it will be leads r us now until i can do other stuff.

What rods you selling mate, or might be selling?

It might just be me but I find it pretty selfish buying non essential stuff at this present time.
The people who get this stuff to your door most likely are putting themselves at a high risk of infection. Most probably don't won't to be out there working let alone handling more then they need to, postal workers, delivery drivers, warehouse staff etc.
I personally think only essential items should be possessed until this **** storm is under control.
Just my thoughts.

I need to buy a vehicle so I can get around And get a new job but I don't want to buy one Until I get a job lol

I get what you're saying, but who can determine what is essential and what isn't? The outfit that someone buys to go out, well they won't be going out but it may just boost their self esteem a bit trying it on sharing pics etc. The games that parents buy to keep the kids happy for a day may just save them from despair. Something that may seem non-essential to you could be supporting someones well-being. Also, many businesses will need to keep ticking over just to survive when we eventually get back to normal.

I purchased a laptop last night online last night as my tablet is broken. Main use is to apply for jobs as I lost my job the day before the 80 per cent pay thing was announced.

The local tackle shops have all suspended their online sales, they dont want to add strain onto the system and i agree.

Not sure why people are going on about deliveries.

My house and shop are five minute walk apart. We have pre ordered items most days atm.
Postman pat DPD red and blue city link FedEx and ups all know my home address and deliver shop goods to my home. They all seem happy to still have jobs. Its contact less they knock I shout yes and they go.

Oh and the systems are not over loaded the fact they are not fighting traffic means most days they are earlier than they would be

Narrowly avoided buying a pioneer 150 last night, was on ebay, went for 640 in the end, Was 50/50 on whether to buy one and i saw that on an auction thought id give it a go. Won some gear on some fishing raffles as well. Expensive business this sitting around all day...

Not carp gear but, traded my multistrada for a bmw and paid a deposit, should have picked it up the following weekend but dealer locked down on the Tuesday before. Ho hum, dilli dilli and all that.

Smk do a wicked little pistol that is 5.5ft/lbs for 160 quid. It takes the little gas cartridges. I then purchased a little holographic dot sight from eBay for 12 quid. And a silencer from an old rifle and I tell ya what, rats from 0-15 yards are in trouble. So so accurate

Actually if you look at the WHO website it claims the chance of getting corona virus from deliveries is extremely small.

It's actually the one thing we should do to support the economy as best we can.

Bought myself a desk for my spare room, books on Thermodynamics and some bait all ordered 2 weeks ago.

I was going to order a new set of Delkims last night but I'm pleased I stopped myself as I doubt we will be fishing before June. Having said that there is plenty of time for me to change my mind, obviously is the tackle shops are still open.

I get that's its a difficult call if we should or should not by things and have them delivered I've gone through that thought process as have we all. The Desk was essential for me. The other items not so, however I justified it to my self as the time for my own mental health staying positive having something to look forward to bla bla bla.

Anyway with a lot of mis-information being thrown about by various governments and social media the only real place to obtain information is from The world health organisation and it's worth a read.

Good man, I've came off fb almost 3 weeks ago due to the rubbish, doom mongers & coronabores almost on every post. I am also of the view that if buying a pack of hooks online keeps me sane for a few weeks, then I will do this.

Ive just purchased a lovely barrow cover, ,just need a barrow to go with it now, missus is already eyeing it up to cover some garden furniture.

Interestingly I stopped using FB for a week as I was getting to involved with it all and how much rubbish was being spoken. It did me the world of good. I'm not back on there and read what people are posting and supply links to debunk poor notions or to offer support to my friends etc.


In addition when I have received any post it gets cleaned down with bleached water and goes in to 48 hour quarantine before I handle it. Maybe ott yet it keeps my mind at ease.

Just make your fb account family and friends only, simple.

standard advice mate, but i had the problem of really good friends becoming coronavirus bores which tbh, was not good for my mental health. My a/c was deactivated for 7 days, it is now active, but i have removed the apps etc off my devices and phone so its not there pinging at every message or notification. If this is what it takes for me to remain sane whilst tying hundreds of rigs, buying swivels etc, then so be it.

Possibly a jest but in case it's not, be careful of legionnaires if the water stands for long periods. Possibly treat it before use or if you have an in-line uv then you should also be ok. We used to use plain chlorinated tap water for our misting but we are in a soft water area.

Treated myself to a vintage 12ft 6” Martin James Split Cane coarse Rod this morning, instantly made me feel much better

I think you might need to research that a bit as I'm not an expert in water treatment.
Swimming pool chlorination treatment comes to mind, but I wouldn't like to say for sure.
Many years ago I used to have a pool and I seem to remember we simply treated it with tablets to chlorinate and kill the bugs, but do some searching on legionnaires water treatment. Perhaps talk to swimming pool suppliers.

I'm going to do what Chris Yates seems to do - bit of distance, put a Fixed spool on (Mitchell 301 in my case) It's pristine, a shame to use.

The options of Pins for close in- once you look the options are vast, I've seen a couple that take my fancy - both need some renovation work mainly due to age (Screws worn, bushes need changing, re-enamelling if dire) One's so rare I've only ever seen one advertised, think that's going to be the one, not going to name as search engines would go into melt down

10x packs of jp precision hooks and other small bits of them should keep me busy with rig tying for a while!

Just stocked up on the aspen4 for when I get around to doing to the pressure washing.

Hi Tazi,
I'm a water production engineer, a tiny amount of sodium hypochlorite would sort it, maybe lightly insulating the vessel as well would help, to prevent legionella the temps need to be below 20c or above 50c to maintain a safe conditions. We use tablets for chlorinating small vessels, each tablet is equates to 1000mg/L but you wouldn't need to got to that extreme.

Hi Taz,

I'd essentially wrap the tank and pipe work with insulation to prevent the water becoming warm (below 20c ideally) with regards to chlorination, I've done some quick calculations and you only need 0.5ml of <5% house hold bleach (sodium hypochlorite) in 50 litres to give a residual of 0.7mg/l, remember if your using distilled water it will have virtually no chlorine demand. Another alternative would be to use tap water which will have some where in the region 0.3 - 0.5mg/l of chlorine residual.

Sounds good but the more I look and study, the work involved to make identical parts, screws etc... is it worth all the time???

I could probably make a Center Pin from scratch to my own design in less time then refurbishing one, one of my mates made 500 of them last December for a client.

For a metalworker you'd probably be better off stabilising timber before working it (epoxy resin and a vacuum pump)
It does as its told after that, and stays that way with a little care.
I remember Gary Mills saying something about titanium for centerpins but I can't remember why he decided not to use it.
Can magnesium be worked or does it have to be cast

I've been pretty good to be honest. I'm the worlds worst at buying crap I don't need.
The number of times I've thought I needed something urgently for my tacklebox, purchased it and then discovered I've got two packs unopened sitting in a drawer somewhere.....

Only thing fishing related I've bought is a summerweight sleeping bag (Snugpak Jungle). All of my overnighters are done during the Summer months and I sweat my conkers off in my current bag. I can use this one as a lightweight blanket if need be....

Magnesium and magnesium alloy are highly flammable and would be highly dangerous to machine without specialised equipment. Using a water based coolant is a no no as it adds oxygen to the combustion counter intuitively. Immersed in oil I believe is the method.

I succumbed... bought a set of 3 Harrison Cerbera 12ft 3.25.
These will replace some very well used US brand 12ft 3.5s that have caught me an awful lot of US carp.

Also have 4 Cerbera 3.25s patiently waiting in Kent for my next France trip..whenever that can be.. I do know how they fish😀.

Bought my goldfish a 2 foot tank and lots of furniture as they have grown to large for the bowl I have them in. I've felt every so guilty and promised them I'd sort it for them a while back. Looking forward to upgrading their home.

I've just won a set of Daiwa dictator z powermesh mk11 LD 2.75 tc on the bay, didn't particularly need them but I thought they'd make lovely rods for smaller intimate venues! Mate I have been an absolute idiot. Already have a full set up but had to cancel a trip to France which I thought we would have lost the money from but found they had refunded us. Also managed to get my travel money back from the credit card company so was feeling a little flush.

Ended up buying a shed load of Fox luggage, a 'Spare' Daiwa Tournament 5000T for a floater set up, a Wychwood Pod (Crap so going back) and loads of end tackle so I can keep making up a few rigs for when I get back on the bank....these are to go with the four dozen rigs I have already tied whilst waiting to get back on the bank

Also because I am still fortunate to be working I have renewed my membership on two waters and the gym (never go but don't feel so bad about all the takeaways whilst fishing).

I look at it this way:
Sometimes although it may not be essential it stops us going stir crazy, mental, bat sh.. crazy. If that means bait making ingredients to make bait, or even rig making bits and pieces, something to keep occupied then it has become essential.

On that note, I purchased some BAF pop-up mix as I need some more pop-ups for the reservoir. I hadn't used many of my garlic oil and Megaspice, but made the mistake of leaving the cupboard door open when I went out, and my bait testing dog decided the plastic tub needed checking, apparently the lid was loose, so she ate them😖😱😁

Another purchase was a full Rod Hutchinson Cabrio Brolly system. I didn't need it, the TFG Oval is still good, but...

Just purchased a bucket to put all my solid bag bits in & made a load of solid bag rigs up, after whatching Mark Pitchers on utube - "solid bag carp fishing"

I've been meaning to buy some new gear for a while and after get my compensation money I bought some stuff:
Sonik Axs bivvy
3x penn affinity 7000 reels
Fox mr+ bite alarms
Some bait from CC Moore
End tackle mainly Nash hooks

Ended up with some new delks and now finding that I just have to buy some more bits to go with them, there are some good deals out there at the moment with people trying to keep some cash coming in, if in doubt always worth giving future fishing a call as very helpful.

Couple more Defiant MPS dreadnaught bank sticks and some Neville swan necks to go with my other MPS dreadnaughts and Neville swan necks

Keith may be able to give you some figures, but being titanium I would imagine they are a bit lighter than the Jag stainless stuff.

The stainless auger points and hex heads on the dreadnoughts will add a bit of weight, so if weight reduction is your ultimate goal there is the option of the standard TBN, but I doubt the extra is any more than a tin of corn. I carry a 19mm socket wrench if I know the ground is tricky and they will pull down into absolutely anything.

I think the main selling point is that you speak directly to Keith, who makes everything to your spec for about the same price as something off the shelf. I know if I ever need something weird and wonderful for a specific venue he will be able to knock it up. The quality is great and he doesn't try and pull your pants down with the price of accessories like stage stands etc.

Anyone can go and buy a Jag set up in AD and I'm sure it's good stuff, but the MPS kit feels a bit more special..

It's more versatile as you can still run it from hp cans, where I don't think you can run the hp version from a big bottle.

I think gerry told me that on here the day after I bought the hp version

I quite fancy the cob with the extras so I can do a beer can chicken on the bank, seemed a bit bulky when I looked at them tho
