I heard the Mitchell Avocasts are 95% the same reel. A few extra bearings and very slightly lighter the Penns are twice the money

Hmmmm. Not sure tbh

Sure either is a good reel though

Do they come with two full depth spools? I have seen an ad where it says so, but also some conflicting info on others......? If they come with the proper spare that's 20 quid you don't have to spend on a spare

ltd's look to have two extra deep mono spools rather than the surf versions that have a mono and PE spool

penns first carp reels (the adds are wrong it isnt penns first venture into the carp market) they used to do powergraph carp rods a baitrunner i cant recall the name of and the carpmaster reel circa 2000-2002

Got these reels on Saturday and been on a long wkend using them!
All I can say is " WOW! Fantastic "!!
the line lay, the looks, the weight, not to big but big enough,
Feel well built, super clutch ! I can go on.
I have been using shimano top end reels and had a few
So I can compare and these are better! Like somebody
Had said before if these had a shimano or diawa label on them

Glad you're happy with the reels but don't mislead people.
A few days back you were asking how to use a front drag reel having only used baitrunners (ALL top end shimanos are front drag even the ci4 baitrunner), yet now you've used loads of top end shimano reels which apparently aren't as good as the penns.

Yea fair point mate. Was using the old shimano baitrunner then xt-a shimano baitrunners for a while, the front
Drag reels I have had I always used to fish with the bail arm open.
But do very much like the penns, and now I'm getting used to front drag work
There good. Ok they are not top end but they are very good reels lets just see if they last like
The shimanos have done me

The name and text is the same as the original version but the picture is the new version. Most companies say "limited" or "ltd". These dont.
Rang them, and guy opened up the system, had to give reference etc. He said they are defintely the new black edition for 99.99. Even though there is 6.99 next day delivery charge, seems a good price

Just recieved mine...
Lovely reels for that amount of cash.
Very smooth, good line clip, fast QD..( like the Daiwa Iso, quater turn from lock to free.)
The handle i did not like, tried my ss3000 handles, and they fit....:-)

Also changed the washers.
There are 3 carbon washers and 3 metal once's.
exchanged the 3 carbon once's for vilt, and now the drag is less quick...and better for my fishing given me more options.
Overall the first impression is they are certainly worth the money.
Time will tell about duration..

I have recently to take the plunge on these, my first new reels (well new to me anyways) since getting some Daiwa Emblem Baboons over 10-12 years ago. As much as I didn't want to part with them, these reels seem to be perfect.

Called Eric's this morning and they are as competitive as they have stated. £100 each with free delivery and some Shimano backing line. so far. Look forward to hopefully christening them this weekend.

Do these reels have quite a quick retieve as i could do with a marker reel. If i needed some fishing reels i would defo look at these. How do they compare to high end diawa or shimano reels as ive seen some bold statements banded about

Why compare them to high end shimano or daiwa?
They are only 100quid each. So would make more sense to compare them to similar priced reels from daiwa and shimano: crosscast x and windcast x from daiwa and shimano Biomaster and navi.
Think i could predict the answer though. Do look good value for money.

P.s. To be fair, i did read a bold statement too until someone pointed out the guys only experience was of shimano baitrunner, so hardly high end. Its in this thread

I have yet to see anyone compare them to high end reels. Are we talking mgs and z45's?
Or high end shims like stellas and daiwas top end saltigas? Or run of the mill surf reels from both companies?
If you want a penn to compare with those high end one then sorry but it wont be the affinity it would be the torque

The affinity is no doubt made to a price. The thing to rember is so are shims and daiwas who have had europe almost to themselves in recent years its only with the advent of okuma that there has been any competition since quantum and the other big players in reels worldwide failed to get hold of the carp bug.
This is penns second attempt at it the first was ignored by many a big loss on their part as the original carp reel they did if you want a comparison isnt far of the old tournaments from daiwa in build quality and longevity, it lacked a few of daiwas refinments though like the spool guard etc

My phone double posted it so it was in response to the last post before mine, well the first bit was.the rest is just general opinion based on owning a few penns over the years and lots of big reels most of which have been not as good as the hype generated at the time of release. For what its worth I think penns are a better buy if you want a fairly low priced reel and wont be overly bothered by resale values on the carp market. For a true idea of what penns are like and how highly valued they are then look at ebay and see how much beat up (looks wise) old spinfishers and stuff like surfmaster 70's go for. One sea angler I know has offered me 150 quid each for my old ones as they have been looked after and will probably still be good in 30 years or so. Ok they may have been superceeded by several orders of magnitude by then but some reels do keep going and have a cult following by people who value dependability its why daiwa still produce the black and gold series charter skippers love them as they are simple robust and cabable of dealing with horrendous angling day in day out, the same goes for the metal spinfishers

I posted before you but your reply seems directed to the person before me who wants comparison to high end daiwa/shimano. I was saying there is no point comparing the affinity to high end carp reels from shimano and daiwa, instead mentioned models from both in similar price range.
P.s. Also you have mentioned penn at length before for lasting and i pointed out then, you are talking about penn reels when penn were owned by a different company. Early signs are good for affinity but its only a few years proof so far, everyone is waiting to see how well they last, me included on an avocast I use as a marker.

K2 have owned penn since 2007, so in past threads when you mention they last 10 years, its impossible a penn reel since ownership of k2 has lasted that long. You are talking about reels pre k2 and pre pure fishing. Also Penn reels back in the day were made in usa, now its china.
Fyi I mean no negativity to the affinities or avocast. Far from it

I own 8 Penn Reels.

3 x Affinity 8000 on my NG's

2 x AF4000 on my Barbel Rods

and still use 3 x Surfmaster 70's on my M 1's as you can see in the piccy, rather "battered" but after over 12 years of faultless service I would expect a bit of cosmetic damage.

I had a play with one if the reels when I received delivery on Tuesday night and was very impressed.

Last night I got the other one out if the box and realised that when I turn the handle there is a faint scuffing sound when the rotor reaches the same point. Whereas the first reel was nearly silent and did not make this sound. I know that a different sounding reel may not be enough of a reason to send it back, but I welcome your opinions.

To the untrained ear (my missus as im holding a spinning reel towards heat ear, changing reels and followed by me saying "Do you hear that?"), there is no difference. But to me, I know that it is there and will annoy me. Is it wrong to expect perfection and should I learn to deal with this minor issue?

just check there are no qc stickers or anything silly left or a bit of paper stuck behind the rotor.

ive taken a reel back once that was making a scraping sound and it turned out to be one of those little oval qc stickers had peeled off and got inside the gap in the rotor housing

rather red faced in the shop when they sorted it in seconds

Well after reading the posts relating to these Penn reels I thought I would have a look myself.

At my local shop where I have been taking my custom since they opened I had one in front of me.

To say I was amazed is an understatement , I have had Diawa , and Shimano and still use both , but this reel for £119 even at this is a steal , I am so impressed at that price I even fancy a set.

After all if you want to catch carp at distance get three of these and spend the rest on bait

Mine arrived yesterday, spoiled them up and going to use them over the weekend.

They are super smooth, lightweight, robust and the quick drag is spot on.

Having used and still own all the top end Shimmys and Daiwa reels over the years I can see these giving them a run for their money..

Can anyone who has spooled their affinity 7000 ltd tell me how much 0.40 line they took?
Iv managed to find a spool of nash bullet xt 15lb and want to use it sparingly, say 150 yards per reel.
I just need an idea of how much backing line to put on first.
Thanks

Put your new line on the spool first, then top the spool up with backing, then transfer to another spool, that way the backing will now be 'under' the new line.

Hi, for line capacity try this:-

http://www.nccoastalfishing.com/linecalculator.htm

Supposed to be OK. Seems OK when Iv'e used it.
You can covert cap from one dia to another.
Or bit trickier, amount of say 200m mainline , say 0.32, plus how much 0.35 backing line required.
Say 50m of backing , i just strip that off i bulk spool onto the floor (keep moving a bit), then wind on reel. Then just spool on your mainline off bulk spool. I use armspan (168cm for me, so about 30 strips) when stripping on floor. Be unlucky to be 1m out or 4m on 200m, normally better.

Cheers BOB

ps justed spooled up 3 Shimano's week back, used them 2 days back, no twist etc etc, bang on. Did them just reeling off spool , spool revolving, as in Shimano recommendation. Did some last year coming off end of spool, matching rotation of reel spool, kept checking for springing off, turn spool over etc etc. At least for mne that didn't work anywhere as good as above.
I measure dia of line with Vernier gauge (pick one up for say £8), not often as manufacturer quotes, i find.

When I spooled up my reels one of has loaded the line towards the back of the spool to much. Is there anyway to stop this happening? I can't see any little plastic washers to take off.

Add a washer to bring the spool forwards

Another thing to try is to start loading line while the spool is in its lowest position, this will ensure line goes on at the front first. I didn't have any issues when i bought my 8000lc affinity's, these was spooled up with no washers under the spool but i started loading with the line going on at the bottom first, so spool fully forward. This gave me a perfectly even line lay even though the spools are forward taper

You are correct, ignore my previous

Do try the other option though and spool up with the spool starting at its lowest position and attach the line to the spool at the very top.

I wouldn't be too set minded on that one. I sold my ISO's when i needed some cash and bought the LC affinity's. i said it then and i'll say it now, they feel and perform just as good no matter how much people want to disregard that statement.

It amazes me that when the affinity's first came about there was doubters and slaters, now everybody is raving, even a few that previously doubted....

Using mine as I write this:
Bad bits: handles....that's it!
Good bits: super smooth
Perfect line lay
Quick drag is less than 1/4 turn
Strong construction

I got rid of my shimano long casts for them and I won't b swapping back that's for sure probly half the weight and still smashing it 150 yards with 15lb floro on!!
These are the cheapest reels I've brought ever and so far the best not sure how they will wear but time will tell.

To get them to fold flat to pack away u have to undo pretty much the hole thread and the handles could have been done bit bigger but that's my opinion, yeah they can be changed seen a set with wooden shimano handles with the quick fold.

No shimano handles fold like daiwas..
Most daiwa handles will fit. Unless you already have some ss3000's it will set you back £270 for 3 handles to put on £300 worth of reels.
I posted this on another thread about it but the bloke is ignorant and above help or advice as I got no thanks whatsoever

Just thought i'd post these pics up for people that may have been curious to know what the insides are like. I was giving my reels a good going over and decided i would strip them to see what the inside quality is like, and i must say that although they do quite simple, everything looks and feels spot on. No cheap nastiness it seems.

The drive gear looks to be made from titanium, the pinion gear made from brass, didn't go as far as taking out the oscillation gear, but it seems ok from what i could see. Worm shaft etc seems to be solid, bearings good quality. All in all they seem to be made to quite a high standard and hopefully longevity won't be an issue as this was the main thing on people's mind.

One thing to note for people that may carry out their own service procedures is that the nut that retains the bail assembley is left hand thread.

Doubt very much the drive gear would be titanium, probably an aluminium alloy, they do seem very good for the money and if they last as long as my mates freespool Penn's he uses for smooth hounds and tope they will be an absolute steel.

It wouldn't surprise me if shimano make there reels for less money then penn being such a large company they will make them in such bulk would b cheap as chips, but trust me once penn have made there mark in carp industry the price will rocket, they r just being smart with the 7000 as its a hard seen to break in too... So go in with a cheap good looking product and break through once there in price will,no questions asked fly up!

These penn reels look ok for the money, and they are an established reel company so they should be good.
I would be happy buying them , as I would buying shimano, I wouldnt necessarily think I was being ripped off if I bought shimano reels that cost more.

not necessarily. The affinities have been out for years and price has dropped. Ok, the gold styling put most off and thats been corrected with the black version, but they are still good reels.
When the avocast came out last year everyone said the tackle shops say prices going up in 2013. Still havent. At times its just a form of marketing to make people feel they should buy at these prices.

They do look good value. I dont know why all tackle shops didnt just stick to selling them at 120 as they would sell no problem at that price too

to your other post:
I got rid of my shimano long casts for them and I won't b swapping back that's for sure probly half the weight
i am sure you notice the weight difference (20% lighter?) but they are nowhere near close to half the weight mate. LC are not 1.28kg

i dont weigh reels mate. I read on here the penns weight was 640g. So if you think they are probably half, you just double it. Simple and of course no way the LC is double 640g. Nor could the penns be half the real LC weight. That would make them 400g ish id guess off the top of my head, not even remotely close to 640g real weight. I wasnt having a pop, just some peoples exagerations are too far fetched not to comment and we wouldnt want to mislead a youngster

Like i said im sure you notice the difference in weight (whether walking around a lake or not). i noticed a difference when changing reels this year in terms of distance casting, felt weird to me at first like it was less solid but that soon changed as i got used to it and of course I prefer lighter.

that handle is terrible its a stupid shape a simple t would have been better and a nice bit of wood would have made the reel something else

Yeh I must admit the handle is a bit of a dog and functional but for a 100 squid it's a minor irritation ,

Mmmmm me thinks I will get these altered

Oh by the way I,m not subscribed to tart weekly , or true tarts , or any other tart organisation

Mmmmm just had a play and the handle is very pleasing to use and the feel is good , might wear dark glasses when retreiving

After all it is a reel to retrieve line and perfectly adequate to do the job

i really am not tarty over gear much prefering function and one thing with handles is they get used in cold wet conditions full of slimey bait and fish stuff

so a bit chunky t grip is a must for me

just to prove it some of the reels i use currently all have T's

and some of those should show just how untarty i am

Went on a reel sortie yesterday , checked out the penns, avid carp , and daiwa entoh tourni qd. The avid carp is an unkown but looks well made and has a nice handle compared to the penn.but is slightly heavier. The daiwa is class and it shows through and is the best of the bunch but it should be at that price. The penn on close inspection, its build looks on the cheap side matching its £120 price tag. I dont like the handle and the one I checked out had a slight rub on spool rotation, dont expect it to look like a reel at twice the price because it doesnt imo.
Having said that it is excellant value for money and matt black is all the rage, for that reason I bought a pair

What exactly do you want to use?
The spigot I'm talking about is the small silver part between the wooden knob and handle itself.
That doesn't screw into the arm, it's press fitted and needs drilling out I think.
I can see that being a complete waste of money

Try it and see....there are usually washers on the spindle to adjust the way the line spools. if its spooling to the back then you need to remove (a) washer(s).

If there is a washer inside the click house underneath the spool then remove it. The only other washer is the one that sits beneath the click house, try removing that.

My only concern is that by removing that washer the spool may catch on the bail assembly when in its lowest position. Worth a try though.

Just wondered what rods people are putting these on. Are they top end reels? My dad is looking for some new reels and I have mentioned these to him, he has 3.5lb hi's rods would these pair nicely?

I'd say that the line has to go as well.

The contrast of the glossy clear colour line against the matt black finish of the reels just doesn't make the reels "pop" like the pics of the lads with the darker colour lines

In the interest of your fellow forum members that have veiwed your pics and may be considering purchasing these reels could you give one of them a few strategically placed smacks with a ball hammer and let us know how robust the paint finish is, after all they will be no good to anyone if they scracth to easily.

Really wish i could pick one up and see the handles they come with.

That looks like an entoh handle?
Presume an infinity br handle would look ok.
Some sort of emcast handle prob cheapest though needs be the right colour to complement the reel. I remember some people on here bought emcast handles for the avocast.
Saw this recently, reel looks a bit bizarre but a black ish handle with wood. If reel costs 75eur, a handle cant cost much surely. http://www.chronocarpe.com/moulinet-daiwa-emcast-carp-5000-p-19165.html

Still not getting everybody raving about these reels. They are good value and they don't look too bad, but that is about it in my eyes. Saying that the only experience I have of them is a friend got some gold lipped ones on a whim instead of his Basiairs. 1 broke and the other 2 didn't stay on there long

if you look at daiwa and shimano at the same price range as the penn the quality of the build and componants will probably be the same, its not a bad reel to be fair, but a folding handle with wood could have been better, time will tell.

But you could buy 18 of the Affinity 8000's for the price of 3 Basiairs and still have change?

I've used the Affinity 8000's from the day they was available via the trade, and they have been faultless
But these all Black Ltd 7000 versions really do make me wish they had been available when I got the 8000's
They seem to be just what everybody wants- and a sensible price, as your not just paying for "The Company name", which seem to have been the case for many, many years.
All credit to Penn for putting some "Cats amongst the Pigeons!"

What don't you get ? You have stated in your post the attraction, value for money and they look good, the only thing they won't do that your mate's basiairs will is attract thieves although I doubt the clutch will seize up in the rain either.lol.

Or whitby jet and pewter.....

The handles specifically the grips are the only downside I can see. If your only fishing with nice neat baiys and in the warm wether they should be fine.
Wood is more than aesthetic its a tactile material unlike these foam and pladtic horrors out now.
Reels should be black maybe grey is ok and all this bling on them now is asking for trouble in the long run.
I think defiant has hit the nail on the head with the costing of them.
Sod it next time ive cash spare im having some and ill sort nice rosewood handles on em. As for new cars and wood er bently etc have wood not fiesta plastic mind you mine has fabric not plastic as its a special car

After shopping around yesterday for a while I have found a shop that is selling them 3 for £300 (same as hull angling who have now sold out)

If anyone wants the shop name please pm me.

I will reply once I have my set at home of course.

It's all Pruster's fault. If he hadn't posted that first pic with the Daiwa handles then people may have been happy with the factory black/rubber efforts.

Given the two small retaining screws holding the reel handles on, I can't imagine it's much effort to pop these off. You'd just have to find the correct bore wooden handle and maybe centre spindle bit.

Eric's sold these for £95 each on their big Friday sale day

These handles are actually very well made , because I changed mine I have dismantled one and that little cover exposes the shaft and thats it,the handle is moulded around it with a shrink rubber coating on top, the only way I can see to remove the handle is to cut the shaft off and try and press what remains out of its housing but I think you will damage the actual handle.

I think a nice Penn emblem on one side would have set it off , just like reels from yesteryear Abu now that was a nice emblem

Seriously thou really for the money what do people expect , it's not a top end reel ffs ,

I have been looking for some cheap reels for a while now , gear that you won,t lose sleep over if it gets nicked , know what I mean to go with the Quest rods and wychwood alarms and cacky old banksticks

It isn,t as thou this brand popped up over night is it , I still have my dads old sea gear (RIP) which is Penn but some will say aaay but they don,t make them like they used to ,
Correct , better tooling and modern materials and computer aided manufacturing it's called progress

Let's face it if you want to turn over a load of reels then target your market and price accordingly , surprised Danny didn't,t get in on the action

One of the worlds biggest and best reel producers entering the specialist market again perhaps
Or potentially a very good reel at a sensible price.
The only reason its this version being shouted about is its a carp badged version of oje thats been available for a while now. Ok its a different colour and you get two mono spools rather than one for pe lines.

it never ceases to amaze just how gullible carp anglers are but hats off to pure fishing for recognising the trend or niche market for this reel .

time will tell how good the reel is , as they are not the same as the old US made warhorses , whether they will be any better than any of the other Chinese made reels branded by korum , ck , still water , tfg etc , remains to be seen .

Don't you mean Conrad " whether they will be any better than every other Reel that's been made in China, OR all the parts made in China but then assembled in Japan"

99.9% are Chinese and that's a fact.

it never ceases to amaze just how gullible carp anglers are

This amazes me also , how anyone can be paying £650+ for a Reel is beyond me.
If they had bodies machined from a solid Titanium Billet, Timken Taper Roller Bearing on the Pinions, Phospor Bronze Gearing etc............ I could understand the price.
But from a Reel costing £100 to one costing £650 + the fact is there is hardly any diffrence what so ever.

You could also argue that as the likes of emblems, aerlex, baitrunner, etc have stood the test of time and cost pretty much half that of the penns; that penn themselves are overpricing these on the strength of aesthetics?
Afterall you say yourself there's 'hardly any difference' between any reels. So why are they double the price of a reel renowned for longevity and faultless service?

bit puzzled?

Emblem S 5000 RRP = £99.99

Aerlex 8000XTA RRP = £99.99

BTR 8000 RRP = £149.99

All around the same price?

But compare the build Specs. Hell the Penns are pratically a "Gift!"

That's a fair comment but ,

These Penns have slow oscillation , titanium main shaft , 9 ball bearings , a bail arm which locks the rotor for the big chuck , two spools ( both aluminium ) all for the princely sum of just over a ton .

It seems we are paying treble this for others with a name .

Also I have a good collection of reels , Shimano , Diawa ect , some top end and also the work horses described .

I,m sure they will live up to the £100 price tag .

It amazes me why some are bothered as they spend most of the time talking about kit instead of using it , let's face it it sits on the bank doing nothing most of the time for some

We all know those rrp's are nonsense. No shop sells emblems for more than £60, baitrunner re £55, aerlex (original) £50 until very recently, whereas the penns are £100+.
I accept the penn is a little more refined but that could be classed as over engineering in an item that essentially retrieves line from the water.
I've owned all sorts of reels in various price brackets and providing they don't fall apart all do the job, which is why I'm back using emblems.
As for the comments about tackle sitting at home, mine sits at home between fishing every week. I doubt a huge percentage of people on the forum can say they fish every week

I think you will find the qc on the cheaper reels quite a bit less stringent Keith

i am not saying they are rubbish , if they were i wouldn't have bought one , but i think recent market success along with their popularity on here has more to do with the asthetic than performance .............i don't think daiwa or shimano will be loosing many sales or any sleep over pure fishings latest offerings . what i really like is the way the manufacturer has reacted to to giving the punter something they actually desire ie the all black big pit reel .

Hmm not so sure I have had and still have a few mentioned :-
Aerlex gtr
Aerlex gt
Baitrunner gt 6010's and 5010's
And emcast advanced
Plus a few others like the bblc's sold as they were tripe too heavy froze up in the cold.
Triton seaspins both sold as spares to someone as id killed them stripping a gear and bending a shaft
Put these against my penns I own only one is on a par with it for longevity and robustness thats he aerlex gtr
Ive currently three aerlex gt 8000's of which two are goodish the third has been canabalised to keep the other two running when bushes and bearings have failed the two I still use have needed to be sprayed after the plastic started bubbling abroad.
Gt baitrunners dont get me started I only managed to pass one on out of four as the others all failed big time bent spindles handles stripping etc
Emcast advanced considering these as all big pits are sea reels mine didnt like the surf gettig grindy with a bit of sand and corroding after the first visit despite being washed thouroughly.
Penns bought 12 or so years ago still going never miss a beat.......

Its why when I recently wanted some normal sized re I bought the slammer liveliners and im contemplating wheather to get some affinitys.

to replace my aerlex as I dont think they will last much longer

Perhaps you are a little heavy handed if you don't mind me saying? Also, the emcast is notoriously crap and sal****er use doesn't really relate to this topic as its a carp fishing forum.
Some relevant points made but you're comparing older penn models built by a different factory to the new offering.
I've been drawn into pointless arguments over these bloody reels before and the truth is I couldn't give a monkeys, my only intention was to point out that a reel can be found at little over half the price of the affinity so according to the 'they're all the same' argument means they should cost the same

And the same is true for the shimanos were are the new ones made all mine are the old japanese ones. The penns I own are korean made and chinese made.

Not being argumentative im often told im blunt when typing sorry nothing personal is meant by it

Just been informed by the wife blunt isnt the correct term abrupt is better

Probably a northern thin

Tad heavy handed but until recently having had two kids in quick succesion my gear was in use for six months as in 150 ish days a year. I doubt many could match that so I did tend to find fault with things more than most, add to that I didnt fish nice manicured waters but glacial lakes upland reservoirs and other larger venues and on one of them you needed to go to rather extreme lengths to get onto the water then gear was tested thouroughly

Of course daiwa or shimano won't be losing any sleep, they are highly established in the carp anglers market. But i don't get how so many users of the Penn' can be wrong in terms of their performance.

What is your take on the performance of the Penn Conrad? Because i am at my wits end trying to figure out where abouts the other reels i have owned are any better, and cost 3-4 times as much.

Much like a fox whatever chub ... Etc small carryall and the aldi ones

You are paying purely for a name. Ok some shims and daiwas are maybe worth the price tag thos for blue water fishing maybe stellas and the daiwa equivalent but the average stuff we use is just overpriced beach gear

My only take on their performance is positive withe caveat that they were us built multis and were in another league completely to the far eastern penns in this thread . They lasted years without degradation and gave trouble free service but its not the same product or even manufactured on the same continent so the comparison with the penns that built their rep against the new offerings built by god knows who for pure fishing is a nonsense

If they are still selling the way they are now in f e years I will gladly eat my words

well i can tell you that okuma make some great big pits ,ive had diawa emcast adv, then i moved onto the latest c14 shimano baby big pits think they were called xta c14 or summat, and for years i looked at my spod reel and thought you no what this reel is so bloody good im gettin 3 more, for my rods the okuma 65 distance, and at 40 quid each it was better than the c14, and 100 quid cheaper, infact after this, i could not see why people rave about shimano , now i must admit that the top end diawas are serious bits of kit basiair etc ,but look how much they are, so i know that with reels under 200 quid, other makes can still win

I had a set of those okuma s your talking about , I had the integrator pros which are the black bodied carp one and some of the surf versions with the pearl white body , they were pretty good reels ...........very smooth , good clutch , decent retrieve rate etc but I found they were almost identical in performance to the ultegra 5500xtb and had the same faults ie there was flex through the reel stem which I hated ........I themn changed to some ultegra ci4 which were way better , same clutch and retrieve rate etc but tighter and smoother with absolutely no shake in the stem , the body is completely rigid and a little bit lighter .

I would go as far as to say the ci4 is pretty close to the performance of my aero techs and and the equal of the power aero to say the okuma is anywhere close to it , is a load of absolute cobblers .

well i had the c14 myself and the only reason i sold them was bcos the okuma was better ,i have no reason to lie ,so im not talking coblers ,infact your talking coblers bcos i had no wobble or play in mine and i feel its the better reel, hence why i sold them, bcos i had both at the same time in my hands and could not see where the money was in the shim, apart from the name, and the line lay is alot better than the shim, and with the money i got back, i put it toward 5 weeks in the phillipines, so im well happy i got rid of the c14

I never mentioned wobble or play I said shake in the reel stem which they all have ie flexibility , with the reel attached to the rod you can twist the whole assy through the stem , this means it feels bloody terrible if your cranking in big leads or clumps of weed

Got a set of 6 for £95 each from abbey baits and am in live with them! Only two things I'm not quiet sure of (being critical) is the handles and I feel the clutch sounds a little tingy if you other penn owners get my drift? Ain't used them on the bank yet so will hopefully have my mind changed on that but all in all think I'm gona prefer these over my basia's.

Good for the money they cost, but i cant see them lasting for as long as a shimmy

Oh and my handles have got stuck under the bail arm on more than one occasion when folding the handle down to put the rods away in a sleeve, anyone else had that yet?

So will be looking for a handle replacement me thinks.

While we on the subject, does anyone know where you can get a spare spool for them, want a 3rd for some different line.

Every single Fixed Spool Reel ever made generates line twist, how much all depends on how much you let the Spool spin with the Bale Arm closed (Clutch slipping) Its just the inherant design flaw of fixed Spool type Reels.

~ Big Pit style Fixed Spool Reels are the best of the bunch thou, as Bigger Spools = bigger Coils of line on the Spool = less Twists per given length of line.

Nothing can help, as every single time your Bale Arm does one revolution = 1 twist , which from first loading the line is not a problem, its when you then let this line come off the spool via the Clutch Slipping, you then wind back in and the Bale Arm adds more Twist per revolution and so on............ Until it gets out of hand ( Starts Wrapping around the Top eye on its own for fun)

Then out comes the Spin Doctor to remove it.

The problem with the orginal handle's can be solved by removing the little iron pin.
Thats the reason the folding is not like it should be..and can be a real pain..

Removed it from 1 reel and compared it to one that still has it atached.
It makes no difference when fully tensioned.
But when unscrewing it, it folds much easier..:-)

We'll I thought the same thing regarding the handles.
But as I remember when watching the Kevin Ellis JRC blog , the Penn rep I,m sure said something about having a choice of handles

I messaged KP spares once as they usually cover the pure fishing stuff but they said they dont deal with reels....
They told me to contact QM service who did sort me out a spare spool for a reel... Contact details below:

Reckon they must of forgotten to tighten them in the factory. When I had a set a while back, I had to tighten all of mine and on inspection of the display model in the shop, that was loose too, so I warned them so they could tighten all the stock models up before sale.

Fantastic reels.

I purchased 3 and they came with wooden handles and rubber handles.

Awesome reels.. really enjoy using them. Line lay is great.

Just a quick question, how do the handles on the reel fold in? Iv'e seen different photos with the conventional 5000t one-touch like handle and then others that just look standard handles. Was going to order from Angling Direct, just something i need cleared up. Cheers

The ones that I have look like the standard handle but the collar slides back allowing the handle to fold, difficult to explain until you have one in your hands. Not quite as convenient as the Daiwa ones but does the job.

In a word yes BUT with shimano reels dropping all the prices i would look at one of their models depending on budget

Having used both I completely agree with this. Now that Shimano prices have fallen 30 - 40% from their peak the Penns (and other similar models from Mitchell. ESP etc.) look less appealing than they used to.

What is the casting ability like with a 7000? The spools look slightly smaller than my current reels.

It's good. A mate and I did a lesson with Terry Edmonds. My friend was using a Basia with 0.33 and I was using a 7000 with 0.33 line and basically the distances were the same between the reels. A bit more line twist with the Penn's but no difference in distance.

(Before anyone gets upset, I'm not saying the Penn's are as good as a Basia. Just saying that they seem to cast the same distance).

The new way of thinking seems to be that big spools are not as fundamental for big casts as we first thought, and line diameter is more relevant. I may be wrong though

Line diameter has always been the easy way to get distance. Way back in the late 80's we were hitting 120yards with 2.5tc rods, a shock leader and 8lb mainline using standard bait runners.

Up that to 12lb line and the distances dropped quickly.

No matter what the magazines tell us (and some casters), big spools and 50mm guides are not the answer.

Narrow, long spools will produce smaller coils that need less controlling that therefore leads to less friction. I wont rant about guide size or numbers in this post

The issue with a long spool is the spindle. If the spool is right at its maximum reach, the spindle is very prone to bending.

Mitchell actually produced dedicated "distance "reels many years ago. The spool itself was around 8" from base to lip and "multi coned. It needed multiple bail rollers and you had to manually move the line back and forth. Picture in the link below.

Forgive me if this post is too old, but I'm after some 7000. Are they compact, small reel, ok for smaller rods like 10' 11'.

I'm after a baby big pit for my river carp, barbel sessions. Maybe a silly question but I have some Shaimano GTE 8000B are they about the same size bulk wise, but with just a longer spool front?

Don't want to buy anything too big to be honest.

Thanks all. Rich.

They are quite a big reel to be fair I had the 8000 they are massive. The thing I would say is that they are the best reels I've had built well and the line lay is spot on. Have a look at the Shimano ultegra 5500.

Fantastic reels.......much too big and heavy for short rods

My advice find a pair of the original 3500 Baitrunners Sea Spin they balance out a pair of 11ft Baliista's perfectly and weigh the same as a feather (you can pick them up 2nd hand for around £30-40)

For something a bit more modern I use 5500 Ultegra XTB ci14 but not very often on these rods I find them very light but a bit bulky...perfect for my 12ft 2.25's though

There's lots of possible reasons for line twist. I've had 2 sets of 7000's and never suffered with noticeable line twist.

Its not a twistbuster, its just a line roller...

Its all about spooling your reel correctly and periodically removing any twist that develops.
