Recommendations for a fully waterproof jacket ( preferably a long one ) - doesn't have to be a fishing brand just high performing

Been looking for a totally waterproof jacket myself but want something that I can use all year round so will be a shell to wear over a T shirt in summer and merino wool base and down jacket in very cold weather. Have all this including a rab jacket but didn't want to wear that fishing so may just buy a replacement for the Rob and use it or buy halcyon hunt goretex .

I am fed up up with gortex now after a time wetting out and then a pain to dry out, went with this

Just does what I need it to do and no wetting out.

Looks allright that. I.never find goretex that breathable anyway.
One of these at least on size bigger than usual. With wool layers will do the job

After trying practically every fishing brands jacket known to man, I got one of these from Mountain Warehouse.

Been out in the consistent rain over last couple of days and seems ideal so far. I got a larger size so I could add layers.

Get a gortex ex army coat massive and totally waterproof snd breathable. If in winter wear a fleece under it.

There are different type of goretex,the packable paclite stuff wets out farely quick in a proper downpoor and won't buy that again .the goretex pro suit I have I've ridden all day in continental storms and consistent rain and stayed dry but cannot find anything suitable for fishing made from it. The halcon hunt stuff is made to measure three layer goretex used by match anglers and is very highly rated.

Bought a Rab Valiance for this winter - 800fp down puffa and waterproof! Has a drop tail at the back but its not a full parka; decent hood and v warm

Ive got a bit of a jacket fettish
I own some fishing bits - Aqua force 12 or whatever its called and its performed admirablly in the few years Ive had it, I also havbe a snugpak poncho for when I get caught out that doers the job , I also have a seriously expensive Stone Idland goretex jacket for going out to the footy and Ive not had any issues with the goretex in the 3 years Ive had it and have been in some torrentiial downpours in it and never been wet but I also have a dryrobe for swimming and I have to say I wouldnt hesitate to take it fishing and at £160 I think its great value for money
Ill also add nikwax waterporoofing is brilliant stuff as well and used correctly will bring old items back to new

Like look of the ridgeline.
Has anyone used the sailing type jackets ie: Musto etc. Would have thought these would be the nuts for waterproofing?

Had a musto jacket a long time ago that was very good ,left it on a ferry and never got it back. When I spoke to the retailer in the link he recommended the ridge line over the musto which they also sell and it's les than half the price .

Not used the sailing jackets, but have one of their shooting jackets, Musto Storm, now disscontinued.
Ridgeline seem to have a good reputation, but the HH is only 10,000mm compared to 28,000mm for the Musto, this may well be sufficient, though some would say not.

Go Outdoors are doing a Berghaus Goretex jacket for £99. Anyone know if it's any good? Thinks it's called the Maitland.

I can say all the various Berghaus water proofs jackets and trousers that I have bought and still use have been fantastic performing and would put them against anything for keeping you perfectly Dry mine are the Berghaus Deluge
I also do use a much heavier duty ex Army Flecktarn Goretex these are brilliant too

Worth a punt at that price, spoke to halcon hunt designer today and he said there are thirty different types of goretex materials with different properties,some more breathable ,some more flexible, some more robust, so choosing the right material for the intended purpose is an important factor in the design stage. Laminated garments are better but more expensive to manufacture than a drop liner garment. All require the correct care to look after them and keep them performing the way they should. Can't make up my mind between the ridge line or a rab latoc extreme.

If you want fully waterproof then probably won't find anything more waterproof (or cheaper!!) than this

I've taken a punt, £99 isn't a lot of money if it's half decent. I have the Vass lined smock if if it's peeing down but you don't half sweat in it.

I use Simms jackets and bibs. You'll never get wet, ever. They are designed for fishing, not sitting in a bivvy and popping out now and gain to check your bobbins. I've done many days pike fishing in the boat on big waters over in Ireland and Sweden, where it has pissed it down all day long and remained dry/warm. Most UK game fishing stores stock Simms, the quality is awesome, sizing is excellent and OK, not the cheapest, but the best never is.

Think my cousin in Scotland has a Simms wading jacket and goretex stocking foot waders. Looks like very good kit , especially the pro laminated stuff but as you say not cheap.

I have had that ridgeline coat and seen glowing reviews for it but after 6 months it starts the wetting out, Yes you do remain dry but the outer is so wet it takes ages to dry out and so feels cold.
Would never buy ridgeline again.

Fortis clothing down in the SW. NOT the Fortis that sells glasses.
This Fortis sells hand made in the UK outdoor clothing. Absolutely awesome clothing. Whilst some of it is expensive, it lasts forever, made with high end materials and made by hand in there SW factory. Always worth checking out there 'sales' as well as you can make a significant saving as they change designs and sell older stock.

Agree with this....let's be honest, even if you Carp fish in the harshest of UK weather you are never going to be out in it long enough to get really, really wet, certainly not enough to justify £400 plus on a jacket....we sit in our bivvies peeking through a letterbox opening!

I use Berghous and found them to be brilliant.
As others have said never confuse waterproof and warm. You need waterproof and breathable and decent options of under layers so buying bigger size. I fish days mainly and with a thin jacket and surplus gortex over trousers it's so easy to fish even in torrential rain and be dry and comfortable. I have warm coats - but wouldn't want one to do both. Mid spring or summer downpour is the same wetness as winter so decent wool jumpers, thermals are what I change not the coat I take. I have the original Korda suit and whilst good it is too ‘stiff' and tries to do too much.

The thread isn't for carp fishing only though, as posted it's for walking and sitting out in the rain all day long while fishing hence the need for waterproof and breathable. The perfect jacket for me needs to be both the above to wear over a T shirt in summer downpoor and over merino base and down jacket when cold and wet.my days bivvied up caping are coming to an end due to age I'm not as fit and mobile as I used to be so hopefully keeping mobile on the rivers and walking lakes will help slow the aging process.

Their top line jacket is a drop liner job and I will never buy another jacket of that type as the shells eventually take on water ,laminated is far superior.

Mine cost £400, so yep not cheap by any means, but still going strong after 17 years, so compared to all the best fishing brands it is probably cheaper in the long run. I got pretty upset last month when I wrongly thought someone had pinched it while on a French public but thankfully found it folded up in my chair week after I got back home..

Ive been impressed with my aqua f12 thermal jacket. 10,000 Hydrostatic head. Its very light for a thermal jacket but is surprisingly warm.

The only and i mean only jacket that has served me well and is totally waterproof and warm is made by Nomad uk.They are made for stalking and here in scotland i have known blokes to sit out on mountains for 12 hours in extreme weather waiting to take a shot either from a gun or from a camera. They are not cheap starting from £350 ish to £600 but they are the best.Unfortunately the maker of these is ill and folded the company this year .But they still have stock in D and g countryways .Just re read and they are definately not a summer jacket.

I have a ridge line monsoon and it's great, not breathable as they state as I sweat buckets if active in it. The only problem I found is one of the pocket has delaminated and a hole has appeared in that same pocket. A friend has one too and the same thing happened to his.
Doesn't detract from a great jacket that I've owned for 6-7 years

I recently bought a Berghaus Men's Cornice III InterActive GORE-TEX® Waterproof Jacket
rrp is £240 but most places at the moment in the BF sales got them for around £139 they get really great reviews on all the outdoor walking type forums always 5 star reviews
everything made by Berghaus i have bought in the past has been far better than most
