My local club lakes have taken the decision to close there waters from Sunday through to Thursday next week due to the extreme temperatures we are apparently going to experience at the beginning of next week. Not quite sure whether it's to protect the stock or Anglers willing to tough it out in such conditions. Any other waters taking these measures that we no of?

Don't see how this is anything but a good thing, for both fish and the anglers
It can be bad enough inside a bivvy in 30 degrees, let alone adding another 10 on top. Think there would be a few not clued up enough to keep them selves well enough hydrated.
As for the fish, they will still be there the week after

Caught carp in a park lake in Melbourne (Australia) in 45+ degrees. However, they're probably acclimatised 😂
I'm on the bank next week, I understand it's unlikely they'll be on the feed but hopefully have the pick of the lake with it being so hot 👌🏻

i live in Spain and i obviously watch uk tv news and all i see is this super duper temperature life changing / social impact / and anything else that sounds dramatic happening
its called summer FFS it happens every year it gets hot for a few days then you have thunderstorms and it cools down
we have been above 35C now for 8 days now and i live onthe coastal strip so its slightly cooler ...where i fish 120km's inland its been 42C and yes we still fish in it and its fishing its nuts off at the moment so if we dont have a problem your slight rise in temps for a couple of days should only be a slight inconvenience not the whole of the UK shutting down because of this

Soft i totally agree it's ridiculous the fuss made this morning on tv they said if your tempted to go in for a swim avoid canals in cast there are shopping trolleys under the water in case you land on one have they forgotten about 76 that was hot for 3 months not 2 days there treating people like we are children or idiots

Should be quite pleasant down here sat beside a lake under the shade of a brolly with a gentle breeze to keep you cool. Definitely wouldn't sit there in a large enclosed oven though. ( sorry bivvy)

To be fair it's not aimed at the snowflakes, its aimed at those who only have a few brain cells. You only have to look at the last big storm we had, the advice was to stay indoors for a day or two, but yet there were still people who thought they had to get a badge of honour by going fishing in it.

My brother lives in Perth. W.A. last time he visited it was summer everyone was wearing T shirts and he felt the need to put a jumper on. You're body acclimates to the climate you live in.

I agree but putting it on the radio a tv all day long every time I put them on its about a 2 day heat wave keeping on its so boring won't change the plebs attitude only way is to force water down them and make them sit in shade lol

I can recall two instances when I got affected by the heat many years ago. I was working nights, starting at 23:00 and finishing at 07:00 which gave me chance to go river fishing during the day very close to home and be back home in time to get 6 hour sleep.
Both instances I sat out on the bank fishing for about 6 hours before going home and feeling OK, and it was not even as hot as it has been lately so never even put my brolly up for a bit of shade. When I got up at just gone 22:00, I was as sick as a pig, top of my head was roasting and I was as dizzy as anything and did not know what planet I was on and basically, I was suffering a bit of sunstroke and had to ring in sick.
A contributing factor was the fact that I was facing the sun across the river and with its reflection, I got a double whammy of its rays and I think it was that which caused the problem.
Usually when its as hot as this, I sit out under a normal umbrella set up outside the bivvy and hopefully with just a light breeze blowing underneath or around it keeps you cool. Ideally, I like to tilt it towards the Sun resting on the ground to avoid its reflection off the water if I am facing it across the pond
But, realistically, I prefer to just stay at home when it gets too hot and avoid Summer and restart end of September.

I've had sunstroke a couple of times, when surfing in Cornwall as a youngster. It's not funny, believe me. Throwing up, shivering, even with a jumper on, and feeling like you've got a bad hangover.

I remember '76 when the water level dropped by 6ft in the lake I was fishing. A few days of extremely hot weather is bearable, if it continues for 2 months. That's a different story.

Just been having a conversation with a friend who is on holiday nr Oxwich in south wales
and obviously the "heatwave "
came into the conversation and we had to laugh as we both were on a school trip to Kilvrough outdoor centre in 76 which is only a few miles from Oxwich bay
and that was a proper heatwave and all water had been turned off and standpipes only ...we were taken twice a day to the sea to have our washes in the sea
we still had to wear our school uniforms for lessons but we were allowed to take our blazers off inside
and yes people did pass out but were soon told to pull themselves together ..i guess things were different back then

In answer to my original post. I personally think we should be able to make up our own minds whether it's safe to fish or not. Because at the end of the day quoting a H+S course I once attended we are our own H+S officer we need to risk asses it for ourselves. These fisheries that are closing I dont think are to worried about the fish stocks. ( the fish are hardy they will adapt ) There more worried about what might happen if there is an issue with an angler due to the conditions while on there water in legal terms.
Anyone know of any fisheries who have been bought to task legally due to an angler having an issue while on there water.. I'd be surprised if there hasn't been?

Was fishing yesterday, it was warm, but I kept myself in the shade and it was fine. Saw loads of fish lazily milling around, didn't ever feel like I was going to catch one but it was very pleasant all the same.

If I was to go fishing, which I doubt, I would hate it to snow, imagine shovelling all the snow off roof of your bivvy in this heat before you pack up.

Funny enough i am right now out on an island in the shade plenty of water just relaxing with my dog... set up yesterday so all the work was done yesterday... cooler here at night than at home thats for sure.

Currently fishing. Had one this morning, fish on the top not interested, its hot but i put my bivvy under a tree, all vents open, plenty of water etc

I'll be fishing tonight probably for the Cats while I'm there, as there's a much more important reason to be there over-night – to man and fuel the Pumps, as tomorrow with the sudden drop in temp and possible rain it's the perfect set of conditions for stratification/inversion and the consequent total fish kill to occur.

No two lakes are the same and the governing factors to cause a disaster are many- But worst case scenario;
Lake that's not in-line (No water flowing in/out constantly renewing /moving the water column), no Weed beds producing Oxygen during the long daylight hours, has not seen any rain or wind for many days - be on guard, and if possible get Pumps in to “Churn” the water column over ASAP
In basic terms - what happens is the water is pretty much the same temp throughout the water column with not being disturbed via waterflow, rain or wind, suddenly a cloud moves over/ cooler rainfall, and the surface water cools and gets heavier than the water below it and it “Inverts”, in doing so all the dormant Bacteria and nutrient that's been static at the lake bed goes suddenly to the top, and gets the two things it's been short of (Light and Oxygen) It multiplies like mad and in doing so sucks all the Oxygen out of all the water (The water turns black or a dirty brown colour) and kills everything in just a few hours, you have fish turning up truly dead for around 10 days after the main event, as the lack of oxygen had made them brain dead.
It's a horrible but easily preventable disaster no one wants!

Water temps won't drop for a while though and it can't do the fish many favours to be hauled onto the bank in the kind of heat we've seen in the last few days. Give fishing a break and do something else. It'll be pissing with rain and cold soon enough.
Water temps won't drop for a while though and it can't do the fish many favours to be hauled onto the bank in the kind of heat we've seen in the last few days. Give fishing a break and do something else. It'll be pissing with rain and cold soon enough.

63 days of consecutive sunshine. 45 days no rain....... really......... mabe I'm missing somthing here but that literally does not add up.
15 days 35+. Indeed, just over 35. Not over 40. It is impossible to equate to equate the two.
9 days at 32%. Big deal.
Everybody loved it....... Did they 2uck. Not enough water to bath, standing in the sun for ages queing for water. Watching lakes dry up and fish die in droves.....rivers reduced to trickles.... yeah, loved it..... Not saying it was all bad, as a kid I enjoyed it loads but to say everyone did and it was all great is crap......
No red weather warning...... of course there wasn't it, was the seventies...... smoking was practically encouraged.....seatbelts optional, H&S was not even a thought.... we are now more aware of the hazards. So they tell people. Big deal. And that weather map comparison on another thread is bs.
What they did do was appoint a minister for Drought. Day after that it rained......

Rubbish,, we were lectured on the dangers of Mercury in school science class. Cigarette packets had health warnings on them in 71. Asbestos was known to be a health risk in the 60's especially the dust when cut.

As I said in the beginning of this thread fuss fuss fuss now all over shutting schools ect ect nanny state we live in no one shut the schools in the winter of 63 when the east coast the sea froze and we had to go to school no fuss just carried on

Is it still hot in the UK ? or is it back to the new normal of average weather for this time of year ...im struggling to keep up with it all
here in Murcia region of Spain we are still in our usual heatwave time of year and boy it was the hottest day / night of the year yesterday ...official temp for me was 45.2C and its not pleasant as your ice cold beer is warm in 3 mins
the other downside here is everything is tinderbox dry and wildfires are a common occurance ...we have had 2 near us in 3 weeks which is frightening ...one of which i filmed from my house ...luckilly no one was injured or died

We got told in the late 80s we had 10 years before acid rain would see us off ,90s it was the ozone layer and given another 10 yrs ..and so on

I'm not arguing against Global Warming, however I will point out that in the Jurassic period, global temperatures regularly reached 40⁰. Dinosaurs roamed and breathed from an atmosphere higher in Carbon Dioxide than now.
The Earth naturally goes through cycles of extreme heat, then cold, indeed around 100,000 years ago we had an ice age, which we are still coming out of and the earth is warming.
I will point out that mankind needs to stop and protect the environment, our littering, use of plastics, landfill of non-biodegradeable items, our burning of fossil fuels.
