Is it just me or does this stuff just look a rushed idea ?
In reply to Post #1
Rushed, not so much (he had a year's non compete to get the ideas right!)
I had a good look through all the products yesterday - one thing that surprises me is the lack of decent packaging. The large numbers and letters are all you see when they are on a wall - it does not stand out to you as anything more than numbers and letters.
With regards to the products - some of it is very crude and does seem rushed/slapdash (premade rigs!!) but some seems great (putty).
All in all - come in at a great price point with a cool QR code on the back of the packets... products not grabbing me, yet.

Seems like they've seen how much the market makes & jumped in to make that money rather than bring anything innovative to the scene, looks the sort of tackle you find in Go Outdoors or Decathlon

Use to work in go outdoors many years ago and they used to have decent tackle in there like Korda, fox and dynamite along with the crappy fladen gear.

I quite like the branding / packaging - one thing is for sure, OMC is using A LOT LESS plastic, which has to be a good thing.

You can bet that Ali will be doing the TV side of it and bringing out some fishing adventures very soon as he was the brains behind Korda's TV spotlight. He's the guy with the contacts and is known in that circle so watch this space...

I found there recent YouTube episode at Withy pool to be really strange...
False laughing strange folk on the bank which you then find out are staff for the brand and not people escaped from a mental hospital...
It was really weird...but that might be my just view of it.

You werent the one don't worry, i ended up just switching it off! I thinks it's because most of the fishing episodes he now does for OMC is just hyping up advertisement for their products and saying how amazing they are - dont get me wrong i get he needs to do that, but it just seemed a bit rubbish as was was constant!

Ali shouts it's all great , and expects people to just agree . If nothing else it's more choice 🙂 . The naming of stuff is questionable for me , but that's minor , but for sure Ali will be very very excitable on each item. The big excitement on one thing was a red line aligner 🙄, and most items are already on the market from established tackle producers . The tackle box thing that straps to your rod 🤔, an answer for a problem that iv never had in 40 years .

Regardless of if you think his a **** or not. He could have stayed at Korda being comfortable for the rest of his life. His walked away and tried to go it it alone, any man with half a backbone has to admire that

True , I think the test will be when they bring out something really different, rather than refinements on stuff already at market , he must have something in mind.
I got slated on Facebook when he released the clothing for just saying I liked the style of one of the jackets in olive as I thought the paintball camo was crap. I had loads of people giving it the beans , praising a product that had not been released , and blatantly they had never seen it in the flesh . I will have a look at the hooks etc when I'm in a shop , then make my own mind up.

The same people would be promoting there best mate on insta cause his a spark/plumber etc that's gone it alone because he thinks he could be his own boss and do ok for himself
People were slagging of the name before they had even released a product, but they'd be happy promoting daves drains cause it was there best friend trying to make a go of life

It's nothing like going it alone, he has a massive backer relatively speaking, and at a guess he'll probably be on a wage and bonuses to prize him away from Korda, plus I doubt he's had to pay for any of those jollies.

He went out and got the backing though didn't he? Do you understand how it works? Wealthy investors don't just give people money and not expect anything back.
He might pay himself a decent wage and take dividends on performance, but there isn't just a guy in the background throwing money at him. It's Ali's company that's the whole point, he will be expected to make a return on the investment or his investors will pull the plug.

"However, back in January I received a proposal from a consortium of private investors to start and build my own angling brand. I have had approaches in the past, but something felt different about this". To me it doesnt sound like he actively went out looking for investors?? Yes I'm sure there are clauses in which he'll have to hit certain targets, but dont make it out to be something heroic when it really isnt. He already has plenty of contacts, plus having TB on his side means he can get loads of support regarding the clothes, great move for him, I'm sure he will do well in it, but it definitely isnt like going it alone, in my opinion

One thing i still don´t understand, is why Korda brought out the Basix range, which is cheaper than their other stuff, instead of just reducing the price of their original tackle
If you buy the cheaper Basix range, are you getting an inferior product ?
OMC has to come in abit lower, to gain a customer base, and still be able to satisfy his investors.

I dont particularly know the pricing point of the OMC products, but you could argue satisfying a large number of employees at Korda would cost more than satisfying a few investors a few months into a new venture. Plus Ali has only just started, I suspect when they start bringing out multiple plastic products, which tooling is needed in the manufacturing process, then you might see a gradual price increase

Why the big hang up with angling direct? Surely if its because they are taking over and putting smaller shops out of business, then the same should apply to tescos, sainsburys etc putting local shops out of business?any big company really that is detrimental to local shops? All the brands in angling direct are surely just as responsible as angling direct themselves. They are the ones that have sold them the gear and give them the discounts associated with buying in bulk

I don't think the cost of living has helped. If your on a fixed income that is not the best and it's your responsibility to make sure the bills are paid and there is food on the table for your family I can speak from experience there isn't a lot left at the end of the week for luxury fishing items. It may be a bit of fishing tackle for someone earning a good wage, it can be the next man's last £20 for the week.

I've just sat and worked it out. My commute to work has gone up by £108 per month in the last year. My wages have not gone up. I can cope at the moment. However it won't be more than a year before I can't. Fuel bills have have gone up by £14 per week. My take home pay is down by £10 per week due to Nat insurance rise. Food rising by 15% this year. Energy bills going up 40% in October. I can see the arse falling out of most" luxury" markets soon.Of course the super rich will just take the opportunity to get richer. Stock markets worldwide took a dive yesterday. We can't be ostriches with our head in the sand for much longer.

I agree. £1000 a year syndicates, trips to France, crazy tackle prices. A change is probably due, and it is going to happen quite quickly.
The leisure industry in general, discretionary spend, will be affected.

One industry you've all not seen rise like it should of is bait.
It SHOULD all be 12/13 quid a kilo direct from medium sized firms to give a decent living wage but it certainly isn't.
The fact most my generation is renting as well doesn't help.
1400 rent a month
Utilities feck knows what they are each month just gets more depressing
30 quid for phone
30 quid for broad band
Monthly probably 200 on food maybe more
200 on fuel
Then there is unit rent, business rates, utilities, hikes in ingredient prices hikes in packaging prices and catering to an audience that's thing you were tge anti christ is you put your price up a quid a kilo.
I thank my lucky stars I'm going to inherent a property at some point because otherwise I think I'd be totally f*cked, and I earn what should be wel within the realms of a reasonable wage and is statistically a few grand above average.
Gonna need a new motor soon as well, life just keeps giving eh 😂

As I say on above average wage. It's the state of wages in relation to inflation thats the issue, not whether or not jobs are "proper" jobs.
Ironic though coming from an angler who finds people that make one of the key consumables for their hobby not in a "proper" job lol.

Or use less of them.
I got into carping in the early 90's and the trend of 'filling it in' had not caught on where I fished, it
About the time that Mainline and Nash started to get popular and it wasn't long before using larger quantities started to become the norm.
If chucking £100's worth of bait into a lake is denting your pocket then maybe use less bait?

The whole market is a load of bollox and a smoke screen to sell, sell and sell
Of all the “successful” carp anglers that I know time is the biggest edge and that's a fact, dole wallers, then the self employed or the odd rich kid with plenty of time on their hands. Does anybody really belive that these people, the bank tamps drive the business and the market lol, they ain't got a penny to scrat their arse with
It's the working man, doing the hours and spending his hard earned cash on a hobby where there is no real measure to it other than bull**** and everybody is chasing a pipe dream, being a real carp angler, the bank tramp who lives on the bank. Without the working man there would be nothing, absolutely **** all because the tramps only have their dole money to buy food and bait lol
Said it a long time ago, they will be like heroin addicts clinging onto a fenced fishery that's £30 for 24 hours when it's all been ottered, people inside the fence doing the weekends for said milky white mud suckers, the “real” anglers
Funny how the circle will turn really, saying that it has already started, survival of the Fittest Fattest

Agreed, no need to skint yourself for fish food, boilies can be bulked out with so many other baits. If an angler really feels it's necessary to pile the boilies in then make your own.

Funny you should say that, Tangey Squid become very popular on our lake due to a chap called Spikey Haired Paul, he was what you would call a 'field tester' nowadays. The start of larger amounts of baits being used.

Especially as we cannot increase prices as carp anglers don't understand what baits cost.
My profit margin has gone from 2 quid a kilo when I started to well under a pound now and that's before taxes.
Well formulated boilies shouldn't have to cost less than 9 quid to the consumer, not when you add all the other costs involved. ( yes I've seen basic recipes on here than can be rolled at home for 3.50 but that's a completely different type of bait ).
One of my baits contains an 8% mix of acid and rennet casein as well as a good percentage of whey protein and calcium Caseinate, all have doubled in price trade. And yet if that cost suddenly announces itself in the boilie price, people think you're trying to milk them dry. ( no pun intended for both milk proteins and rent boy references)

Maybe people will finally realise that putting expensive milks and animal meals in fish bait is a bit silly.
I appreciate the thought that goes into formulating a good boilie, but my honest opinion is that most bait recipes are formulated as much for the satisfaction of the bait maker as anything. The all seem to like to play the mad scientist with secret potions up their sleeves.
I know it's the same old one, but why pay £9 a kilo when you can get a 25kg sack of pellet with the £millions worth of aquaculture science behind it for £30 delivered? Not to mention a few tins of corn.
I can see sense prevailing rather than peoples willingness to spend more increasing.
Not a stab at you Mozzi, just my thoughts. It can't be sustainable to throw £50 into the lake every trip on top of everything else.

Its not all aboit the ingredients. I get my bait from a very well regarded bait man. Not only am i paying for his ingredients, im also paying for his wealth of knowledge and experience. I dont use loads of boilie though, and dont know many people that do £50 of bait a session. If im intending to put a decent amount out, i quite regularly bulk the bait up with pellet, corn, hemp etc.
Id rather my bait man put his prices up a bit than go into a shop and spend more on some of the mass produced stuff thats turned out by some companies. Od rather it in his pocket than nash or mainlines. And It mostly goes into my syndicate, so i do care about the quality and nutritional value of what goes into the lake

Thing is, then you have got all the agro of baiting up, if you're doing short little sessions people like to fire out a few boilies and keep disturbance to a minimum, which let's be honest, unless you're fishing in the margins, spombing out pellets is hardly subtle.

Anything else is bad business practise and leads to going under... Respect your work and your own products. If you dont respect it yourself than for sure customers aint gonna respect it...

The same old conversation going around again.
Money......we all earn a different wage
We are all getting squeezed massively
It doesn't leave a lot for some to go angling with
Bait price.......everyone wants it for nothing
Everyone swaps to cheap particles
Everyone moans about the cheap particles
Boilies become a better option on many waters
Everyone wants cheap boilies
Everyone moans cos they are using cheap **** boilies
And we go round and round and round
My advice is always the same, whatever money you have left for fishing invest it in the best products you can but perhaps buy a little less. My rods are 100 quid each and many years old, my gear is battered, my bivvy was cheap but it's waterproof, but when it comes to July and the silver fish are out in force, I want a decent 20mm boilie to stay out there til the carp turn up. I go to catch carp and I'm afraid that right now it will cost more than it did two years ago.
Make your own choices and live your own lives.
And Mozzi is right, making bait is bloody hard work for very little return right now. The golden days for it are over.

It amuses me that so many new brands spring up in carp fishing.
The cake is only so big.
With say 5 tackle brands every manufacturer gets a decent size piece.
With 100 tackle brands, the cake is the same size, but the pieces smaller.
Then every now and again a name goes, or is taken over by another brand.
Dave Preston of Korum, originally Preston innovations years ago worked out he couldn't compete against Fox, their patents and licenses etc, so he went match tackle boxes and add-ons. It's now that his design is giving him a toe-in the market.
Entrepreneurs seem to look at only one spot, and while Ali Hamidi may be a marketing whiz kid, he is only looking at carp fishing, where brand loyalty can be a thing. He may be a name, from TV you know, but breaking against your former employers, and off the wall innovations that need to be genuine advantages.

Markets is already in decline, my local shop confirmed this saying its only the regulars popping in for bits and pieces and a bit of bait for the day. Following a couple of used tackle dealers I know that deal mainly in mid to high end kit they are trying to sell some stuff they've had since the end of last year. Can see a lot of places folding this year

The insinuation reads extremely different Joss and it felt like an attack on how hard I work if I'm honest. I get where your opinion is coming from because yes, it is easy to make a good bait. However there is definitely an art to producing exceptional bait, and keeping it within the realms of a reasonable price to the consumer without shaving away at the quality of it.
I'm sure if you ask any of the proper firms ( by that I mean not the ones set up by people after doing ok on a mediocre recipe after rolling 5 kg , or the huge ones producing bread filled crap ) they could tell you exactly what will happen with ingredient substitutions for example, or easily recommend there best bait for different lakes / approaches / provide informed customer service.
Not to say we don't all struggle with other aspects, moving from large air guns and tables to proper machines was a baptism of fire for me and taught me that there is an entirely different side of bait knowledge and the world that goes into it.
I use a very well known brand of machine, it's the one the huge firms use, and it's on a narrower set of rollers, for my mixes, it is quite sensitive, you rest my mix for “x” number of minutes it rolls beautifully. Five minutes longer it's too stiff, five minutes less they all deform in the tray after rolling etc. And thst is different for both mixes, st different times of the year. Even in size, you roll 18mm after a longer rest period as it goes through the extruder quicker than 15mm stuff so doesn't dry out anymore in it. The fine line between soft paste flat spots and those weird little holes that look like adds holes within the bait is quite finite on my mixes, even when saturating the particles.
The rest it's different to tables is tables you can use a far stiffer mix.
There are of course more agricultural machines out there that produce a decent round ness but it's a mini arms race to be best of the smaller names etc every percent counts.
I'm doing nights in the unit at the moment due to the temperature but I've come in today because a courier lost two parcels yesterday one of which is bait for a french trip, I'm fully “booked out” as it were for rolling for a couple of weeks but I've come back in many hours earlier than I would usually do to make sure he has bait for his trip - irregardless of if the courier admit fault. - a lot more goes on than anyone with a brief look inside will lever realise, so many people have different standards and to be considered decent you need to be exceeding them 9/10.
It feels like far too much work for tge money lol

Consultants get a certain amount free than can purchase basically at further reduced rate to sell on, most mainline sponsored anglers will sell you bait at 60 quid for 10kg
No idea what tge mark up is for them
As for general field testers I think they can also do this?
For general field testers non mainline I'd say a proper tester should get bait at production cost - you shouldn't make money off of people will to trial and work on things with you as they are an asset.

They are.
Use whatever you want to use. If you want to spend a fortune, that's nobody's business but yours. Judge your results on what you catch, and ignore what others may think of as "not a proper carp bait”. If it works for you, fine. If it doesn't try another approach. Chose a bait that you can afford and that you know carp like to eat....And therein lies the clue. If the carp like to eat it, you'll be on a winner. If they don't, you'll know by your lack of action.
ATTRACTION is the key to it all!!!

To return to the OMC discussion. I work in branding/advertising (for clients like Nikon) and launched Dave Lane's brand & redid the Superteam logo for Shakespeare (PureFishing) as well as brand campaigns for PF's Penn, Shakespeare and JRC, so here's a professional perspective.
For me, OMC looks like a mash-up of Daiwa typography and a graphic boat - almost TV style Ident - it's odd & unclear. It doesn't reflect the emotion of 'oh...just one more cast...& then I'll pack up'. It also doesn't have an inherent benefit like 'Thinking tackle' and DF's 'nerdy' glasses which represent brains, ingenuity etc. ESP / Thinking Anglers / Avid follow this route while Ridge Monkey is mad yet memorable thanks to their distinctive products & strong branding.
As others have said, the market's crowded and I'm still using Fox RX digitals from 20years ago - so true innovation in fishing isn't easy. OMC's apparel def has the TedBaker influence, but personally, I'll use goretex kit from an outdoor brand, if it's tested on the side of a mountain, it's good enough for the side of a lake / river.
DF started Korda by selling leads from a bucket...not with multi-millionaire backers, we used to joke about 'Korda kit you never knew you needed or...solutions to problems you never had' but the lad's done very well because most of the kit is well thought through.
Now, if OMC came up with a lightweight catty with a 100m range and unbreakable elastic....One More Catapult....but the last one you'll ever need.

Another spin on it is a professional opinion is based on a professional viewpoint. I did not see what the branding meant but I do think its different to the normal stuff we see and in a more environmentally friendly package.
My bait labels get an "oh that looks nice" from anglers, but from graphic designers it gets heaps of praise for things I don't personally notice but they do not ( designed by my brother who's background is graphic design and earns a mint in London currently ) but I don't possess those "professional" eyes. I can glance over a bait / recipe and scrutinise it like you just did the branding stuff and Im sure for example, those outdoor brands product designer could look at fishing clothing and see it shortfalls etc.
his media presence alone will sell it,
Ironically hes just done a video on the new fox alarms haha

Nice one
Korda sold quality products at the time, now the market is flooded
It's just One More Company trying to cash in on the sheep

Probably not a lot of call for Ted Baker style slim fit camo shirts IMO. Not in most of the carp angers I see anyway (I include myself in that lol)

Didn't you know, woman are seriously attracted to carp anglers, it's all to do with the image you know
They can also shag the neighbour while the carp man is cracking one off in his tent
Just when you thought it could t get much worse. Ted Baker for hard core carp anglers

Has anyone used the OMC 35lb coated braid yet? I'm after a fairly stiff material that I can use for multis. I bought a spool of Korda Hybrid Stiff in 25lb I think. It snaps like cotton under very light pressure. Completely unusable. So in the market to try something else.

I think he's made OMC look very gimmicky and cheesy. almost settled to fish runs lakes to try sell the gear to the more modern anglers.
All the best to him but certainly nothing exciting

Yeah it's thinking anglers, the dark brown seems to blend it well anywhere. I just find it has more memory, with the two sections of the D kept narrow where as I've noticed the tungskin to create a wide pinch point and inhibit hook swivel movement. I do love tungskin, I compared it to the roginso spool I have it's heavier now and greyer

From what I've seen.OMC look like just another " Me too " company. Though I do like the look of that multi baiting tool. I wonder if there going to do it along the lines of the swiss army knife and Leatherman in that its guaranteed for life? That would be a first in the fishing industry..

I get the theory behind it, and it actually looks alright, but the practical uses of these sort of multi tools are useless in my opinion, and generally only get used if something is lost or broken mid session

Surely it's just all about how it looks? Look at the lovely machined parts and fancy bolts.

Wychwood multi tool was released earlier this year. Made of plastic, 9.99 on the bay. Same product basically. 🤔

That looks well made..
I have to say ,for fishing and general get you out of a corner tool,I'd really rate the Sidekick ,made by leatherman,it's used everytime i fish ,so many uses, from gentle swim pruning to testing knots..although I note the OMC version ,is geared towards fishing obviously..

Must admit I do have a Bahco Multi-tool in my box. I actually use it for the pliers quite frequently pike fishing, as my first choice hook removal kit.
Almost everything else is normally unused, although occasionally I do use the screwdriver 'blades'.
The can opener is a waste of time, not enough cut and slips off the can, and the saw blade is too short, and the corkscrew is slightly too short for my St. Emilion Grand Cru.
Oh yes, the file, I do use that, can't have a gentleman like me with a bad manicure...
I use my Swiss Army knife far more frequently.

theres definitely a place for a knockout carp fishing multitool and this looks closer than any of the other iterations mentioned.. as stated usability will be key. hard to build it durable enough i reckon as baiting needle gate latches have a habit of breaking ... nice idea tho

I would argue that there is a level of innovation to this company. Not surprisingly, given his background, much of this innovation relates to marketing and I think that he has tapped in very well into this social media driven world that we are in. I am sure that the products will be as good as any others that are out there and their price is slightly lower so I anticipate that they will actually sell a lot of product.

Is the price only low because they are essentially only selling through angling direct??
