I'm looking for some waterproof walking shoes for spring - autumn use . I've had some waterproof karrimor walking shoes for a couple of years . These were inexpensive (£35) I think . They've been ok to be fair but are now leaking . Can anyone please recommend a pair that aren't too expensive- £80 perhaps ! There's a fair few in sports direct that are quite reasonably priced but without recommendations too many to choose from . Several are Gore-Tex lined - like Merrell which I thought may be a better option . Thanks for your help .

Mate, you're about to experience something different... Well your feet are. The Karrimors and all cheaper waterproof shoes are absolutely terrible for your feet. The fake Gore-Tex linings maybe waterproof... But they are no where near as breathable as real Gore-Tex. It's expensive for a reason. My first waterproof trainers were Karrimor, admittedly a long time ago. They were utter jank. Your feet are about to really love you.
As far as Gore-Tex lined walking shoes go, I've had them all. I've currently got Salomon GTX, Merrell Moab GTX (on left) & now I've just moved onto to Adidas Terrex GTX (on right).
The Merrell Moabs were the standard bearers, I've had three pairs now over the years. They are exceptional shoes. The only problem is they are quite thick and chunky for Spring/Autumn use. But the lining in them is top quality. I saw someone this Spring with some Adidas Terrex walking shoes. Salomon and Adidas are the same people. They are very similar to my Salomons... But a lot more comfortable and ultra breathable being a mainly mesh outer.
You can pick the Adidas up for around £80 if you really shop around, although they retail for just over £100. Both the Merrell and the Adidas come up small. (I'm sure this is to do with the Gore-Tex lining) Half to a full size difference. I've worn mine fishing every single week since early Spring. They are truly amazing shoes. Far more breathable, speed laces. Just be careful that you get the walking shoes and the GTX version... They do a lighter running version that looks near identical, and also non GTX versions in both the Adidas and Merrell that again look identical... But they are not waterproof. I mow the lawn in the Merrells now lol.

There has been some good deals on Jack wilolfskin shies on amazon, I picked up a pair for £38. Seem really good. The terrex are good, I wear them for my everyday shoes and have for maybe 10 years, when they get a bit tired usually get a few more years as fishing shoes.

I use the Merrel Moab too, very happy with them, but they're coming to the end of their life.
Bought a pair of Tog 24, but not got round to using them yet.

Thanks for the reply everyone. TCarper , is it looking like you'll get the same lifespan out of the Adidas as you would the moab's ? Just wandering as walking / hiking shoes is what merrell do and Adidas are known for the sports side of things so didn't know whether they would likely last as long . i can highly recommend the merrell zion gtx. I got the boot version and they are spot on but they do them in shoes as well.

I have the Salomon Ultra 3 GTX which have lasted years, they also do a boot version of them, I must say those Adidas look interesting, might have to check those out

I've been using the Merrell Moab for the last 6 years ish, I won't buy anything else now, they're the only shoe I use daily so they get abuse. I still use my 1st pair in the garden, there's nothing wrong with them other than the fact the cushioning under foot has collapsed slightly from wear meaning the bridge is more raised which can give me issues over time so I've retired them from every day use.
My second pair is over 2 years old, and when they go it'll be another pair, can't recommend highly enough. I tend to buy them from Go Outdoors with their price match offer, think this last pair were sub £70.

I have the R2 Swift Terrex Hiking shoe. They are the newest version model. I just googled the others, I'd spend the extra £15 personally, the speed lacing system is pukka.
The Adidas will last ages don't worry. They are proper hiking shoes and built that way. They are near identical to my old Salomons... Even in styling. But the big advantage is the Adidas have this rugged mesh instead of leather... It makes them so much more breathable than the Solomon. For some reason the Adidas are far more comfortable too. My mate who's shoes I saw, his were battered. Looked old. He said they were still perfectly waterproof.
All the reviews by hikers I found online regarding the Terrex R2 were extremely positive too. I love mine.

You know what I don't get, how the Moab can look so new after so much abuse, that coating on the suede must be military grade special stuff

Had some Salomon X Ultra Leather GTX which were superb for about 12 months then fell apart, still searching for another replacement, had looked at the Terrex and also Keen Targee 3 but undecided.

As someone who walks dogs every morning, gathers sheep from fells and goes fishing I would avoid leather footwear for fishing as the kneeling down and putting the toes down on the ground whilst unhooking or being by the waters edge destroys the toe box and its join to the sole,
Grisport footwear as mentioned have done really well for me I got nearly a year out of them with daily use across various terrain also some of their boots are a slightly wider fit than most other manufacturers,
In an emergency purchase a couple of months ago I purchased some Peter storm fabric shoes for £35 and for the price they've been brilliant I can't wear them out to gather sheep as the soles are a little too soft for hopping through rock beds and such all day but for fishing and the daily 3 mile dog walk they have been great and being fabric they haven't suffered the big scrapes and gouges my leather boots have. Been out in water over the toe box and water just beads off them.
Ultimate bit of advice I can give from my years of destroying footwear is to make sure you clean them and treat the material appropriately grangers wax is best on leather boots and mountain warehouse do a great fabric proofer and a cleaner for boots that's inexpensive and effective. Even cheap footwear will serve well so long as they are looked after properly.

I have the Terrex swift R2 GTX mid, they are the best shoes I hve ever owned. I can only say if you've worn them out in 120 miles then you must be a heavy lad
Thy are amazingly comfortable and completey waterproof. I bought them for my lads saturday morning football but have been using them for my fishing also.

Mine are perfect after three months hard fishing in them, going every week. Ovbiously not hill walking in them, but mine show absolutely zero signs of wear mate. I fish a big pit and walk in them a lot.

Don't wash them in a washing machine mate. They have a Gore-Tex lining/sock inside, you don't want to get washing powder near that.

Exactly what i use, exactly apart from now swapping my Moabs for the Terrex R2. In the winter I use Scarpa Terra GTX boots & Baffin Trappers. The leather on the Scarpa's is so soft that it defies belief. Quality boots.

They are truly great shoes mate. The difference it made to my feet, when I went from crappy shoes for fishing to those GTX Moabs was vast too. My only problem with them for me, is they are a bit much for warmer weather. They are more like a winter trainer to me. I wear GTX boots in the winter. I wanted something as waterproof and technically as good as the Moabs, but a little lighter, not quite so bulky. I'm not really into bulky trainers generally.

Those are my Vents, that's why I took them to Thailand, they were nearby hence the pic. No way would I have taken my Goretex, I'd rather risk wet feet from water than sweat, even they couldn't cope in that heat/humidity
Talking of which, I haven't seen my Goretex or my Meindl boots since moving house 2 years ago, still in a box somewhere and due to health reasons haven't needed them as not going out in the conditions requiring them.
But...talking of leather...I love my Meindl leather boots and they are all I used to use in winter fishing or for fell walking when I needed ankle support, mine are still in very good nick even after many years, my Mrs keeps leaving hers in the sun though and the rubber toe cap is perishing...anyway I digress...
A chap I knew who had used them slated them, in fact all leather boots for his use. He walked daily in the New Forrest with the likes of Bracken, low berry bushes Bilberry etc and Gorse and he said leather just got chewed up by them, either getting in the grain or just phsically ripping them.

I agree with you they are quality ,but you must,nt wear yours alot because they last me on average 18 months but i do wear them for walking round my loch everyday.

Couldn't find anywhere that had the terrex swift's in stock but managed to find some terrex gtx A'3's again in 9's . These however were very tight and again no bigger size . Better luck next time perhaps , thanks .

I got myself a pair of terrex AX3 GTX I went half a size up and they are a snug fit. Do they give slightly when worn? If so I'll keep these if not I'll go a full size up

Throwing a couple of other names into the mix, i replaced an old pair of Columbia that had served well as fishing boots for the last about 10 years with a pair of Keen boots - seem very well made, comfy and working well so far.
Outside of fishing use, i have a pair of Millet walking shoes that i would recommend

After reading up on this forum, I went with a pair of MOAB's in size 13. Reviews on a couple of sites claimed that they had leaked but I still went with them. Before I used them I gave them a light spray with Grangers Footwear Repel and let it dry naturally. Been wearing them almost daily through farm fields walking the dog and feet have been bone dry.
More importantly, they are so comfortable. Really feels like wearing a pair of trainers.

With Adidas you have to go a size up. Worn old school adidas trainers all my life all ways liked the football casual look. So when Mark Tcarper on here recommended the Adidas Terrex walking shoes I had to have a pair. I've always been guilty of buying crap shoes for fishing and then wondering why they were falling apart after six months. Need to look after your feet gents. With Adidas you have to go a size up. Worn old school adidas trainers all my life all ways liked the football casual look. So when Mark Tcarper on here recommended the Adidas Terrex walking shoes I had to have a pair. I've always been guilty of buying crap shoes for fishing and then wondering why they were falling apart after six months. Need to look after your feet gents. Spend as much as you can afford you wont regret it.

I been using them for around 6 years never missed a beat I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would spend such vast amounts of money on these named trainers ?
as IMHO they are never gonna be an extra £100 more comfortable or £100 more waterproof ?
and as I said I chuck em away after a couple of years and get a nice new pair works out £17.50 a year

The main problem is I'm a size 13 which vastly limits what I can get, and I have a sports direct about 10 mins away so I could go and try these on. For 35 quid how wrong can they be.

I hd a pair of goretex adidas terra trainers, fell apart with 50 miles,holes on the mesh at the on the side on the crease of the foot, heel ripped and the inner foam started coming out and the grips wore down and started peeling away...never seen a pair of so called walking trainers deteriorate so quickly, sent them back and got a full refund...absolute garbage and would never buy any goretex trainers from adidas ever again.

I don't always wear waterproof shoes. My father wears rubber boots-pants that cover his legs almost to mid-thigh. But I don't like putting cold rubber on my feet. I just ordered a kind of pants and shoe covers. I have sore feet, and I buy special sneakers for https://www.tennisshoez.com/best-tennis-shoes-bunions-men-women/ and put silicone foot covers on top of them, which are laced on top. Water has never leaked into my pants or sneakers, which I am delighted with. Try it, and maybe you'll like wearing foot covers instead of rubber boots.

Strange...
...I've had a pair of Adidas Terrex Gore-tex for about 2 years now, wear them every time i go fishing plus walking at weekends with the missus....walked hundreds of miles in them and although they are getting a bit tired they are still waterproof and in good overall condition....would buy another pair tomorrow.

sent them back had a refund mate,I was gutted tbh as they looked the part but just fell to bits....maybe I was unlucky and had a friday afternoon pair.

I agree with this on the Terrex AX3 GTX, I use the shoe versions for warmer weather and lightweight stuff. Over 2 years old and almost look like new. Had 2 pairs of Moabs, very comfortable but the soles degrade and perish so I was not impressed with their longevity. I still have them but they are no longer waterproof. For winter I use the Salomon 4d 3 GTX and this is without a shadow of a doubt the best boot I've used

I was going to get a pair earlier this year because of the positive reviews but after speaking to a mate who had just replaced his he told me not to bother as his feet were getting wet just from wet grass.
He does a lot of walking and said his wasn't an isolated case as he knew someone else the same happened to

However, prior to my first wearing them I did spray a light layer of a waterproof treatment to the outside and left them to dry naturally. Been wearing them for around 4 or 5 months now and no problems at all. And they are extremely comfortable, almost like wearing a running type trainer.

I have never had a single problem with Moabs, I've had a few different pairs and all have been bombproof.
One thing... There are two types of Merrell Moabs.
One is the standard Merrell Moab (around £60-70). The other is the Merrell Moab GTX (around £100-120).
They look identical... Apart from the gor-tex ones have a tiny little tab on them declaring that they are 'waterproof', and it says GTX on the box. Apart from this, they are identical. One is waterproof, the other is not.
I know two anglers, who purchased the standard ones... Thinking they were purchasing the waterproof ones. A simple mistake, but you have to make sure you get the gor-tex version. Not saying anyone here done that, but I know two different anglers who did.
I've had loads of different gor-tex walking boots and trainers now. All of them, they are a gor-tex sock/lining inside the shoe. Eventually that sock will take some damage, as by its very nature it takes a hell of a lot of wear, being inside your shoe. If that sock gets damaged, they will let in water.
Simple things, like not pulling them on with the laces done up really helps to prolong that socks life.

In the case i definitely know of i specifically checked to make sure he had the goretex version and not the ventilator one as that had crossed my mind, as no doubt some people have made that mistake.
There are many good reviews yours and others on the forum that maybe his is an isolated case, i had wondered if they aren't made as well as they used to be but that is just speculation on my part.

Had 2 pairs of GTX and both pairs the sole has come away in some extent. As said before, very comfortable but they just don't last.

There is nothing more frustrating than visiting a store and being unable to find the right suit. Some people may think that finding the right suit is easy, but it can be challenging. The most important factor in choosing a nice suit is its quality. If you choose a cheap suit that does not last long, you will have to constantly replace them, which can get expensive. I found the best one at Gentleman's Guru . They have a wide variety of suits for all kinds of tastes. I am very delighted with the quality of it.

If you want walking footwear which can take some stick over a long period of time then you have to look elsewhere than pairs of walking shoes designed for pensioners walking along canals on a Sunday (i.e. Merrells).

A lot of walking boots, even some of the more expensive ones, are crap when it comes to being properly waterproof - step into the margins a bit and that's it. If you really want the best - nothing worse than damp feet - after catching-up with a mate who's a serving officer in the Paras and taking his advice - I got Lowa combat boots - just the dogs nuts, end of. You could stand in water all day long, zero wet feet. I then treated myself to the Lowa desert elite for summer. These are what the army guys wear for combat, enough said.
