Whilst I fully agree that nothing beats time spent on the bank, and I am doing so whenever possible, I also believe I could benefit from learning a few things from some of the best carp anglers out there at the moment.
Who would you consider the top three carp anglers at the moment and why?
Likewise if there are any good YouTube channels or podcasts for learning about carp fishing feel free to recommend them.

I think you'll get a gazillion answers. Personally for me the top anglers aren't full timers who just catch fish. My top anglers would be either on limited time or would be innovators as well. Also not guys who just fish the same complexes all the time but catch from a variety of different types of venues. Plus I can think of a few guys who are catching machines who fish no publicity waters so very few know them.
Others probably feel differently

Unfortunately, or should i say fortunately, the top 3 are sat in an inconspicuous swim hauling, far from the madding crowd and nowhere near any form of social media, just doing what they do best ... with nothing to prove to no-one
Next time you´re on the bank, salute the ol´tosser in the swim next to you, minding his own business, without a brandname in sight

One is a mate of mine who fishes his local waters and catches, despite recovering from brain tumours, on limited time and resources. He has been down and out, beaten the odds and lived. His fishing time is well enjoyed and deserved.
Then there are others who want no publicity, who just want to enjoy their fishing with no pressure to perform by sponsors. Many of these anglers keep to themselves.
Just because an angler is 'famous', does not make him a 'top angler'. Current media has made it so that anyone can be famous if they push themselves forward enough, and that is not just anglers😉
Many celebrities with no talents or skills...
I learnt far more from older generation anglers in my local club as I grew up than I have from most of the current big name anglers. The most important lesson was always look for the fish, work out where to put your bait and find what the fish want to eat.

What actually constitutes a top carp angler..?
Is it someone who catches a lot of fish from all types of lake,or venues,in all conditions and uses social media and platforms like you tube to self promote ..would that be a top carp angler, and in the never ending circle of getting likes and online praise...and all the while promoting this or that venue, often to the detriment of other people and their enjoyment, not to mention the tackle,'it's the best thing since bread was sliced..
Or...
Would a top angler be someone with a strong connection to the countryside, and the natural environment, promoting ,leave no trace, and respecting the lakes and others, catching a few fish along the way, holding down a job and being with their families, not trying to get a sponsorship deal or recognition, other than a sense of self satisfaction..someone I could learn from regardless of age...and themselves willing to learn as well..
I haven't met a top angler, for a long time, especially one that can think for themselves,....indeed some of the best anglers I know, don't fish for carp,as surely as night turns to day, carp angling is as manufactured as instant as you make it..
However,I love carping,because..I look to no one,and fish to my own expectations...and respect the countryside..

The most successful and iconic carp anglers over the last few decades for me:
Terry Hearn
Dave Lane
Jim Shelley
Carp fishing for me, and always will be is about catching the biggest fish in the lake. The above 3 are masters of it, target fish after target fish after target fish
Not a stock pond, not a runs water, au natural as it should be, at one with nature that has usually taken its balance to create these special fish
The other side of carpfishing is, it's not about carp fishing it's about some bum trying to be famous and polish his ego, desperate to be be a famous carp angler who in reality has caught **** all
Compare their catches with the men above, not at the races, not even close

That entirely depends on where you're going fishing.
If you're lucky enough to avoid the crowds and fish on exclusive syndicates, then the likes of Terry Hearn, Darrel Peck and Dave Lane.
But, if you are targeting day ticket lakes like Linear, or Bluebell, which are always rammed, then Tom Maker, Kev Hewitt and Mark Bartlett.
Personally, I think you're wasting your time though. Your best bet is to just go fishing, use whatever the going bait is on that lake. Then, go where the fish are, if you can, and use good rig with a sharp hook that can be easily presented over a clean area.
That may sound simple, and that's basically because carp fishing is.
Sometimes you can have too much information. Just do what you do, keep it simple and your catch rates will improve over time.
For example, Tom Maker is an absolute machine on Linear. But, he doesn't do anything special, he just keeps it simple, goes where the fish are and puts in a lot of effort.

I see your point. That's why I always go round the lake and talk to whoever's there about where's he fishing and what he's using. Local knowledge is always valuable.

Hearn, Penning, Peck for me I really like the videos they produce and some of the best out there
Ok. So if we are talking ‘names'
Terry is different class. He was catching fish when he was a postman, through dedication and the odd swerve. Long before full time and tackle/bait deals. I'd say he's probably the most complete carp angler of my generation. I've only ever met him briefly at shows as he's never fished any of the same waters as me, but I was left with the impression that's he's a throughly decent bloke and appears to either not realise how good he is, or has absolutely no ego. Number one for me.
I've met Adam Penning a few times and been to a couple of his slide shows. If you gat the opportunity to see one I really recommend it, throughly enjoyable couple of hours. They are never the usual turned up, caught this bore fest. Very thought provoking.
Ok controversially I'm gonna say Danny Fairbrass. Look past all the Korda haters and the “bosh” nonsense. That guy is a proper quality angler. He makes some pretty tricky venues look easy and has done for years. Frampton for example is no joke and he's getting multiple catches from there etc. I absolutely know that if I fished with him, even after thirty years, I'd learn something. Plus he gives a lot back and still gets a load of stick for it.
Damien Clarke. Understated but an absolute machine. When I speak to good anglers who have fished with him, they all say he's a bit special. That speaks volumes.
Lastly probably my favourite is Frank Warwick. Limited time. Amazing innovation. Quality angler. Got the balance right. Makes it look easy. Brutal caster for a smaller guy. The complete package and humble, and always willing to share info etc.

Spot on Alex, you got what I meant..
If an angler is considered consistently successful in their catches,is prepared to learn as well, and respect the environment, and others, even though sometimes that itself is hard...they ,if they have both attributes, are good anglers.
Note,I use the word angler,...there is a difference tween an angler and a catcher of fish..
I know one angler,and lots of,catchers..

There's a few others for me too, Terry goes without saying, Nigel sharp, Jim Shelley, Simon bater, oz holness, they all hold high regard in ability, some more so than others on how they conduct themselves. For me though, those that keep themselves to themselves, have a regular full time job and family commitments takes some doing chasing the countries finest carp with any degree of success.

Gone against morals? I don't know, you'd have to ask Oz Holness that one.
I can't see what he's done that's so morally wrong, though.
He's had a career as a fireman. He's literally put his life on the line to save the lives of others. So, if he wants to change his mind, or his morals as you put it, and earn a bit of money to support his family, by working as a sponsored angler, I really don't see what the problem is.
Good luck to him. I say

The common denominator that all successful anglers share wether a name or not is unparalleled 'dedication' regardless of constraints or even advantages. Despite all best day dreams not all would achieve similar results as when it comes down to it to be th at driven is beyond most.

I personally don't think there is anyone anymore.
COVID has evened the playing field with anglers now fishing all throughout the week.
The question should be "who is the most advantaged angler by fishing full time and has the correct tickets to fish the waters that contain decent fish"..
I turn towards the guys that fish the rivers nowadays, especially the Thames. These guys are some of the best in there game that still fish one of the last bastions we have in this country. Most of them hold down full time jobs and have commitments. The leg work they put in to catch is immense.

oz holness... on how they conduct themselves
Correct me if I'm wrong, from what I've heard, wasn't it Oz that cocked swim X up on Ferry that now no-one can now fish from because of him taking the piss in the outta bounds? Didn't do none too well on Ferry that year, like zero on the bank whilst others were catching around him.
Shelley... on how they conduct themselves
Shelley lost the Fen Drayton syndicate due to him being over the reserves when he didn't have permission, also, swore and ragged apparently at one of the head female RSPB bods which didn't go down too well, and then there's the snide 50lb linear that he scooped out of the ditch between Ferry and Swavsey claiming he caught it on a spod rod and pop up. There's more to the Ferry Linear story. Well dodgement.

Got nothing against them personally, Jim is an exceptional angler, there's no doubt about that. On the flip side, from what I gather he leaves places in a cloud and general bad feeling. Shame really.
Just to add: apart from the dodgy Linear from the ditch, which has been confirmed by a very good source, all the rest of it could all be a load of old nuts for all I know as I wasn't there when these thing happened.

There's not too many really successful carp anglers who haven't pulled a stroke or two throughout their time, some small and some bloody huge!
There are certainly those that are naturally talented and just seem to know where the fish are an exactly how to catch them, those that work incredibly hard at their craft and some that have so much time they literally bore them out.
Whilst I have admiration for some as Carp Anglers unfortunately it is a very selfish pursuit and in turn produces some not very nice, selfish people.

Regarding the pulling of strokes, the best say nothing and enjoy the moment for themselves.
So it goes without saying the top anglers are the ones who enjoy it the most.
Chris Yates and Bob James, the epitome of enjoying angling

Spot on.
I have learned more from Forums over the past 15 years than anything in a magazine.
Fermented Maize and Watercraft doesn't put money in the pockets of those who sell drop-off heli's for a living.
We must be the only industry that holds salesmen is such high regard for doing their jobs.

If Tom catches a specimen roach from some river out of season, Dick a monster perch from a fly only game reservoir and Harry a well anyway point being nobody gives a toss just good angling but when it's a carp then Jesus a stewards enquiry commences as to the does it count drivel, carp angling has climbed up it's own arse that much when at the end of the day it's just fishing nothing more!

You won't get a better answer than this to address what you're looking for in the first post.
I get what you're asking.
Darrell Peck, Carl & Alex, Tom Maker all have good things to offer in their videos. Then adopt some of their tactics/approaches based on the type of fishing you want to do or where you aim to fish.
I too like to watch others and learn to see if there is something I can add to my game. I mean, can you know it all? Or know enough that works for you?!

Things like that have no effect on me. You could say the same about every single angler that fished the mere for example, or any other sssi, some say they rub carp fishing through the mud by doing so. In my experience, you do what you have to do to put it in the album, we all take liberties at some point in life and you can't take the picture off of them no matter how they put them in the net.
Like I said previously, I don't look up at them in awe, I admire people who balance a family life, full time job and who still get out and do it, far more personally, but you can't help but respect what all those anglers have caught over the years.

So what you're essentially saying is f**k anyone else, just as long as I get muh pictures, at all costs, even if that means ballsing up the fishing for future anglers regardless; is that what you're saying?

I too admire people who balance a family life, full time job and who still get out and do it, those are the ones that deserve their captures, they are extremely well earned.
A lot of those who have been successful have also been extremely selfish and have either screwed up or put great strain on their families and lost jobs in the process to achieve their goal.

I don't believe the lame old excuse of the statement in its various guises that's whined pitifully that having a wife and kids plus mortgage and lashings of overtime at work is more important in life. That doesn't sound like a life to me more like a sentence so who is to say that a life dedicated to your true passion angling is a wasted life as it seems to me to be actually living instead of merely making good with existing within a dictated rat race within the system. I bet plenty secretly wish they could leave the shackles behind and go live whilst I don't think the bank tramp fulltime dreams of the rat race.

It's not about the mortgage or overtime, they are things you do because of the unconditional love and protection you give your family. I hated kids, wasn't interested in them one iota.
Now there isn't a fish alive that could ever mean more to me than my 2 boys, not a chance

Guessing you haven't got kids mate, everyone says it but it really does change everything. I work a stressful job which I wouldn't have chosen as a career path. I have done 3 overnighters and maybe 8 days all year but I have a lovely home, the wife is ok, to look at anyway
. My little boy is 3 and as hard work as he is the smile he gives me and the joy he brings, makes me feel incredibly lucky. Every aspect if life is about balance theres a lot of sad old men with very little to show for from their lives dominated by fishing.

👍 the fact is that whether kids were planned or not, any one with a heart will always put their kids and family ahead of a hobby, no matter how obsessive it is. I fish no where near as often I would like, I possibly could go more but it would put a strain on my wife looking after 2 kids and probably on our marriage and I simply choose to not go down that route. Work is a means to give the family what I feel they deserve and to pay for my hobbies, which fishing is the main one. If I didn't have the family then fishing would take up far more of my time and I know for a fact I would catch more fish, but not sure my life would be as fulfilled as it is now

Sadly I am separated, (it wasn't my choice), but I do have (grown up) children. Even now if they want something I will drop everything to help them or be there.
I fish on my days off most weeks in summer, 2 or 3 nights depending on shift times, a bit less in winter.
I can just about afford to do so after rents and bills etc.
I have caught some good fish, of various species, and I honestly believe that if I was still together in a partnership, I would not have caught some of those fish, including some personal bests.

Impossible to say because it isn't a level playing field, and it's a hobby, so making it competitive as in “who's best” has zero bearing. Far, far too many variables. I like those who are decent company, anglers who know what they're talking about, usually with plenty of experience, and who stay low key whilst being trustworthy. Top values, if you like. The minute someone says “my P.B. is xx pounds” or “I've had xx number of 30's or 40's” is the time I switch off. Those who've been there, got the t-shirt, worn it out and bought a new one don't tend to brag or publicise en masse, they don't need to, everyone locally knows who's a good angler, often not names either, just well known on their local scene for being successful. Almost all have a job, many a family... They're the ones, and there are plenty of ‘em around...

Not comparable. Everyone fishing for the BM was on a level playing field. When everyone else is sticking to the rules and you pull strokes to catch, thats unfair on the other anglers pitting in the time.
Tatton park might have been a better example.

If you've got that much of an issue with what oz done over ferry message him and sort it out. I don't really give a ****. It seems to be what your argument keeps falling back to and it's falling on deaf ears mate.
How longs a piece of rope? Baiting swims with big hits of bait when your leaving the lake ruins people's fishing, doing articles and videos on lakes ruins people's fishing, plenty of things ruin people's fishing these days.
So regardless of your bad experience, I can't help but not change my admiration of the anglers I listed, it doesn't mean I like them all, or sometimes how they go about it, but that's life.

Fair point.
On that train of thought there are plenty of examples. It is what it is, I've been victim to people pulling strokes over the years and getting the job done by doing so. It doesn't bother me anymore, good luck to them, you live by the sword you die by the sword, and it certainly doesn't always pay off

Oh give it a rest. The type of chap that believes someone else prebaiting or doing a night in the out of bounds is ruining their fishing, is the type of chap that would rather look for someone to blame for their lack of action than look for some feeding carp to fish for. Anglers having been pulling strokes ever since carp have been fished for. You take the risk or you don't and If you get caught there's no one to blame but yourself. It's not the sin you make it out to be.

Oh looky, someone else that can't grasp the most simplest of things.
Oz was taking the piss in Swim X which was on the out of bounds bank fishing in the out of bounds - Swim X you were totally able to fish legit - coz silly bolloxs took the piss in the out of bounds past Swim X, no one, I mean no one can now fish Swim X because of his antics, that has nothing to do with blame for not catching, it comes down to the fact that that swim in particular was and always had been a particularly productive swim on a pit that has 1/3 of it closed to fishing, now that swim no longer exists, closed, end of, no more. Can you grasp it now?

As in literally walking the spawning grounds?
Or fishing them from the open swim?
Either way, I'd be a hell of a lot more pissed off with Gary for punishing the whole syndicate for one man's actions than I would with Oz for casting into the no fishing bit.

In all honesty, I really don't know the absolute details, I can find out.
I'd very much doubt it would be Gary closing anything down as he's a maverick renegade, more than likely it's the RSPB. He could have been spied up by a bird watcher from the hide on the 3rd and passed onto the RSPB, again, I don't know the exact details of what went on other than Oz cocked things up from what I've been told by stand up guys that were fishing the place at the time. By the way, Oz fished that Swim X for over a month and a half when he was was on there.
Edited to add: if any of what I've said is incorrect, I'll happily correct.

In my eyes Pete Springate is still up there with the best, not chasing monsters but fishes purely for himself and still likes to explore places unknown to many and relishes the buity of his surroundings and very knowledgeable of the wildlife around him.

Fair point. When you hear the same thing from multiple blokes fishing the place, it's the only conclusion you can come to until you hear differently, I think that's fair to say that, I'll happily make the apologies if it's not true. Now it could be a case of blokes not liking him for whatever reason, or just simply made up nonsense, the easiest way to find out either way is to phone Gary himself.

Evening all,
Just like to clarify a few points raised on this thread, one that was bought to my attention by a mate just the other day who thought I may like to take a look! It seems a member on the forum has questioned my integrity whilst angling on Ferry Lagoon using hearsay to make some sort of point, and also bought Gary Bayes name into the thread and so after speaking with Gary earlier I will make a few points in reply if I may.
1. I never fished in, let alone was either seen or caught walking around in the out of bounds/spawning bay/mere on Ferry.
2. I fished the X swim for 2 nights, weeks after it was opened for fishing that year (in July as stated in the rules) and spent a further 6 nights over a period of a few weeks on the straight bank leading up to the X swim which is also allowed between July - September). Most of the other syndicate members spent time on this bank during that period like you would! I certainly did not fish a month and a half in the X swim although there is nothing to say you couldn't do that even if you had the time (I don't)!
3. I often spoke to many of the rangers who were working the protected site during this period and they were always helpful and informative of their plans for the reserve but never had an issue with us being in the area during the summer. The other members who were fishing that year were mainly good friends of mine or even close mates, so I'm not entirely sure where you are getting your hearsay from other than rumour or gossip-mongers with nothing better to do with time than drag others into negativity.
4. I spent the rest of my few sessions on the lake either on the Swavesey bank or at the other end of the lake once the drifting weed became too savage to have landed a carp safely.
5. The scrapes made in the meadows behind the X swim by the RSPB finally attracted some very rare ground nesting birds and despite some valiant efforts and meetings the area was deemed out of bounds late that autumn. Gary informed us that year at a show that we had lost these areas to the rare bird life turning up at last and there was nothing more he could do at the present time.
Hope that clears things up a bit.
Anyhow, enough of all that, I hope you are all having a great season and enjoying the fishing...if not out angling then enjoy the summer... it seems to be here at last!
Peace

There are some incredible anglers out there. One or two that many of you would not know by name but I would bet my last pound on them catching a carp. I respect all those lads who work all week, raise a family, and still catch on a Saturday night before returning for Sunday roast. Angling is not a level playing field anymore as many anglers have just given up the rest of their lives to go fishing. Of the named anglers who many of you would know, Adam penning, darell peck, and Ian Chillcott always had my respect.
