I've been lucky enough to win a set of three brand new Shimano Aero Technium Magnesium 14000 XTC reels.
They're being delivered to me from Angling Direct at some point early next week.
Obviously I was over the moon when I won them, but not so much the next day when I got made redundant!
Much as I want to keep them, money is all that matters at the moment, so they need to go asap.
What is a realistic price to put them up for?

It would not be ethical to sell them for anything other than what you put in to get them as a prize regardless of your employment situation. It would seem to me you're really asking the question seeking validation.

The only thing correct thing to do is to keep them and use them as they were intended and not to be sold on to make a profit.

You won them. You do what you like with them.

I have a young family to feed and support.
Ethics doesn't come into it.
And I'm certainly not seeking validation from you or anyone else.
I'll be selling these reels and probably a great deal of my other tackle as well unless I can get back into work very soon.
Not because I want to, but because I have to.

What a pathetic view lol wow. So say I bought a car for under market value and decide to sell it. Must I now sell it for less then what people would offer due to what I paid for it?

Also reading his initial post he asked for input on worth not your views on selling them.

As for the seller. Best bet is to go on ebay etc and look at completed listings to get a good feel on worth (The last 2 new sets of 3 in Oct sold for £1250 and £1390). They are doing £1 maximum selling fee's at the moment so good time to list them on there.

As someone who is in a similar scenario as you I hope you get for them as much as possible!

It must be wonderful to be so self righteous, the old fashioned description is pompous priggery. My view is the guy is using a stroke of good fortune to support his family through hard times, like any man worth the name would do and more power to his elbow. He must get as much as he can.
The modern description of this kind of post is of course Trolling.

You've had a windfall just when you needed one. Sell them pronto and I hope you get one of those insane eBay buyers to pay you three times what they're worth. Good luck and hope you get a better job soon.

What a complete and upper load of tosh, using your logic a lottery winner would only be able to spend £2 of their winnings, utter rubbish.

To OP absolutely sell them, looking after your family is way more important than a bit of fishing tackle and good luck finding another job.

What the f uck are you talking about with your gibberish nonsense? Talk about muddying the waters much.

Entering a cash prize lottery is totally different than entering a contest for a physical item.

As for the other posting here backing up OP's idea to sell these reels: you all seriously lack morals, integrity and ethics. No wonder we're in the societal decay that is so evident all around. I can not even parse the idea of winning a prize and then selling it on and making money off of that prize; it simply doesn't compute. It's totally wrong.

I really don't care what any of you think of my opinions aired here.

The irony of all of this is that you lot will bitch and scream about tackle companies ripping you off, yet see nothing inherently wrong in selling on large ticket items won as a prize for cash money. Lul.

The only morals here is a fella putting his family's best interests over a set of shiny new top end reels, and that's to be applauded.

But aside from that he has every right to sell the reels and do what the hell he wants with the money.

Who loses out if the OP sells his reels?

Angling direct would have got hits on the website and the sales that go with that.
Shimano donate the reels and Angling Direct plug them as part of the competition.
OP bothers to enter the competition (most people wouldn't) and wins. He sells, the buyer gets some brand new reels for a better price and the OP has the cash to keep him going while looking for a new job.

Interested to see what you find unethical in any of these transactions?

Or did you enter and not win

Only one poster being negative, most applaud you for putting family first and rightly so, let this thread stay and put the reels in the classifieds on here. You've honest and totally up front about winning them and the fact the money may be needed elsewhere. Good luck with the sale and hope you find a better job soon as.

What a sanctimonious post, often these competitions offer an alternative cash prize, they certainly do not come with a set of rules stipulating what can and cannot be done with any prizes. I doubt anyone can fathom the thought processes that lead you to thinking and telling others that selling on the reels is immoral or unethical, perhaps you should talk to someone professionally about your emotions and have a good cry about it.

If I entered a competition and won a Range Rover I'd be over the moon. I certainly wouldn't keep it as the insurance would be to much. And quite frankly I have no need for one so I'd sell it.

So you win the lottery and can't spend it, how dare you exchange cash for material things.

Do you know me, have we met before, how do you know my intelligence levels?

Talk about take my opinion out of context, twist and *******ise it in your own head that I'm somehow jealous... seriously. I knew some idiot would accuse me of being jealous, hey, and you're >that guy<. Give yourself a pat on the head. If you re-read my initial post, I did mention he should sell them for what he payed for them, that's if he did pay for entry to the competition he entered, which if you remember was what he asked (paraphrasing) 'how much should I sell them for'.

Just to be clear: I hope OP gets a job even better payed than his last and that things turn around for him quick sharp and that he keeps the reels, enjoys the use of them and catches bundles of fish with them. I'm genuinely happy that he won those reels. We're not Venezuela just yet. There are support systems in place to help people out who have fallen on hard times. It's not like OP and his family are going to have to scour the forest's hunting squirrels is it?

It doesn't surprise me one bit how people have reacted to my posts, after all, it's just a case of the times we live...

Edited to add: just to say, before anyone else hoists up there memeflag, read what I've said, don't take any of it out of context, only the words contained within those posts of mine are what I'm actually trying to convey; nothing else. There's no hidden meaning or agenda.

Question
In the last 20 and particularly in the last 10 years, have you personally tried to access the support systems you mention, and then support yourself, partner and children on the outcome?
Please consider some kind of help. It is sad to see someone making such a fool of themselves on a public forum.

You are in a minority of one and your logic is way off.

If I had the cash spare myself, I would have had them off you & if I wanted to sell them at a later date (or if your situation changed), would have sold them back to you at the same price (or less if they had been beaten up a little - which obviously wouldn't be deliberate with those reels).

I was medically retired almost a decade ago now & know exactly what you are going through. Needed to sell some bits, but the only people interested were the "traders" who wanted to pay nothing for the items & then sell them for the same as what I had them listed for originally (which was too high according to them!). In the end I just ended up putting my head down & doing what I could to keep a roof over my head & food on the table (didn't sell the gear in the end). Exactly the same thing now happening. Have listed some items elsewhere for sale at reasonable prices bearing in mind that most have been used once & still in original boxes/packaging & could pass as new in a shop), yet only interest is "traders" offering 25% of what I have the items up for (which is at least 30% less than what they cost me!).

I refuse to deal with "traders" (you can tell by looking at how often they are listing different items for sale) now regardless if buying or selling & would rather keep the stuff or give it to a youngster than sell it to someone who is going to make a profit from it & taking the money from you that you need more than them (else you wouldn't be selling most of the time). Just my own principles & obviously everyone is out to make some money at end of day.

Going on what a lot of the posts you see regarding items of tackle, nobody is allowed to make a profit according the those out there constantly having a go at the tackle companies for ripping people off with their prices. It is these people who seem to think that Korda (as an example) make every penny out of a £5 pack of hooks, when the tackle shop/dealer makes more money from the product than the manufacturer does in a lot of the cases.
Everyone has a choice at end of day when buying or selling. You either will pay the money or accept a low ball offer or you won't. If its a bona fide tax paying company offering me a price then obviously they want to make a profit to keep the business running, but a lot of the time, with regards to "traders" on angling sites etc, they aren't declaring the money they make from buying & selling most of the time, yet still say that the tackle companies are ripping people off because the companies do pay their taxes & staff on top of R&D etc.
