As per the title. What is the etiquette for naming a fish?

Something best left to the parents I feel.

Good question..... don't think there's any real etiquette involved, honestly... Fish names tend to evolve over time.. Is naming fish still a thing? Generally it was the biggest in the lake that got named. But with so many big fish in waters these days you don't seem to hear to many names being banded about.. Or is that just me?

I've heard of the same fish being called multiple names over the years.. one tends to stick.

A name on a fish is just a point of reference anyway. Call them what you want..

How fish get there names. Is an interesting one. Mind..

One of my syndicates has a rule that first person to catch a new thirty gets to name it. The amount of people that pick names related to their own name amazes me.
Love the YaMum idea though, going to use that if I get the chance

Baffles me why people name fish, it's not like they come when you call them. 🙄

I agree other than as a point of reference for lake owners to monitor the progress of fish. As an angler though I couldn't give a damn about the name

Does naming goldfish count

I had 2 gold fish and called them one and two

So simple

It was great because when one died I still had two

Last lake I was on was the same - any new 30s first capture you get to name it . . . obvs some existing older fish down in weight were already named / fish with particular markings . . .

Common names across several different lakes have been - 'The Minter / High Back / Box Common / Long Common / The Fully / The Double Zip / Big Lin' etc etc

I can see a point to it in the sense of tracking captures, which ones are on the missing list etc.

I don't see the point in naming a 5lb'er after your kid though. Makes me laugh when day tickets with a stock of 500 pasties puts up a pic of a random ****ter and the caption reads something along the lines of....

"Terry blanked for four days until this stunning foul hooked fully came over the netcord. The consultant for suckmycorybaits, DanglybawbagBoilieStops and TigolbittyPVA mugged up the beauty on a 26mm Dumbell from MuffDustInovationBaits. Dave decided to name the absolute worldy "Petals" after his step sons grandkids son, Jonny Tesla Samsung Mush Smithy Boy"

I believe that:-
a) It should only be named when at a certain weight (above 30lb)
b) A fish should be named after a characteristic of itself- eg a deformity, unique look, type of fight - Fungus, Pawprint, brute as examples.
c) For sheer humour - i have seen some cracking names in the past that really do make you laugh when you here the origins.

Im not for this new trend of naming every fish as its stocked by the fishery owner personally, understand the reasoning for them to monitor growth and weights but i think it should be a prize for the captor. And i also hate the thing for naming them after relatives.

Fish should not be named. IMHO

I fished a syndicate lake where the bailiffs son had a name for every fish, If he saw you playing one (he was always at the lake ) he'd run round and grab your net, but before he'd even netted it ( gin clear water) he'd tell you it's name, weight and when last caught.

I hated that. I like to at least imagine there's some mystery left in carp fishing.

I have since joined 2 syndicates with pretty much no named fish, just the obvious big ones.

It's just human nature, a easy way of categorising something without going round the houses.
I get it for special fish, as in the old days, but with so many fish about nowadays maybe its lost a bit of purpose. As long as it make you happy and all that

I know that sort of person. I don't mind a chat while fishing and it doesn't necessarily have to be about fishing but what I hate is these walking encyclopedias who can only talk about nothing else other than dates, weights, places and history etc etc

if a name applies to the character of a fish - how it looks, it's behaviours - a bit of meaning etc then I am all for it - the big common, two tone, one eye, the fat one, the slag (every one's had her)

naming carp after people, relatives or people - all a bit boring & silly.

baing able to name a carp when it gets to a certain weight? LOL LOL LOL - why not go the whole hog, maybe some sort of religious naming ceremony with a carp priest & a bit of a piss up afterwards?
