I'm in the market for a new headtorch. USB rechargeable would be nice, currently looking at the Ridgemonkey VRH300 as TFT have it on offer for the next few days on eBay (£39.99 with free case)
What would everyone recommend in this rough price bracket?

LED Lenser, German engineering and they come with a 5 year warranty.

can't see the point of rechargeable, what if it accidentally runs out in the middle of night when you need it the most?
I don't see the point of high powered either that floodlight the bank, for that reason I use a Petzl Zipka.
It has a thin retractable cord which allows you to wear the torch like a watch so easy to find in the middle of night and a lot comfier than having it around your neck or head, it uses 3xAAA batteries which last a long time and when they do finally run out just change them.

Nothing wrong with rechargeable headtorches. Most people have a power pack so no harm to leave them on charge during day when not needing them or even leaving the, charging when sleeping as you will know where they are. Over a season, it will save you a fortune in batteries & also mean not being caught out without spares in your bag when you need them during a session! Gardner do a rechargeable one for under £20 which is bloody bright as completely blinded myself for a minute in the shop when having a look at them! If I didn't already had

Yeah LedLenser was my go-to, still might go for it...
I will always have a battery pack to keep on top of charge, but the Ridgemonkey also has four power status LEDs.
I don't need mega brightness and fiddly settings, one button works fine for me. (However, the possibility of a beam setting isn't a bad thing)

Take a look at the fenix range.I have 2 of theirs both are superb.I had a ridgemonkey one and hated it,big bulky and made a horrible high pitch noise.

Cant agree more with this, i have a petzl tikka unsure of the price but perfect for the job, great battery life and plenty bright enough

Agree with Led Lenser. I've got through a bunch of carp company ones which were poor and had a led Lenser now for 3 or 4 years and it has been great

I have the Nitecore NU25 rechargeable head torch, it's just over £30 but spot on, easy to use, multiple options including two red brightness and a soft reading colour. Was recommend on here, have a look at reviews and YouTube.

I completely Agree the Nitecore NU25 rechargeable head torch, as recommended on here is the daddy I showed my pal the recommendations on here and he bought one when we went fishing
and I saw it in the flesh I was blown away MOST head torches these days are very good I know I got most of them lol
so I bought one my self and I prefer it 360 Lumens using the power of a CREE XP-G2 S3 LED. A built-in Li-ion battery pack keeps the NU25 running for extended periods of time, and can be easily charged up using any micro USB compatible power source.
The top of the light features an LED power indicator that lets you know when it's time to charge, and a lockout mode will help keep the light deactivated while in your tackle bag

Another plus is the fact that the torch itself pops off the "mount" easily, so if you have 2 you can swap them out to charge them and still have one in use.

The battery life is not very good,does it switch back on to the setting you switched it off at.I hate headtorches where you have to scroll through the settings every time you switch it on.

Ah yes it was Gerry who pointed me in the Nitecore direction, I got the yellow one so easier to spot in the night rather than carpy green
and another plus is, after 3 seconds on a setting it's just a single press to turn off

Got it from the run time stated.Also no memory when switch off/on which for me is something that would stop me buying one.I like it to come back on the brightness I turned it off at,less pissing around

He may do but for me this is not the best option.I prefer my fenix headtorches they do everything I want them to and have stood upto alot of abuse.

I got one for the boy. Got it off eBay for a fiver usb rechargeable and lasts couple nights also has motion sensor, good brightness aswell 👍🏻 Rm are just glorified sandwich toaster importers

I got a Fenix but never use it now
as mine does not have the red light option and I hate my natural night .vision being messed up and of course in the summer you get bombarded with insects with any white light

I took someone's suggestion the other month and bought one of the newish Energiser rechargeable. Decent range of settings and also offers green or red light. Personally I find the green preferable to the red for saving my night sight and it also appears to cast the green light further than the red.

I've never been bitten by mossies using a red light. As soon as I used a white light to read by I got bitten to f&#$k. I always thought they found their prey by carbon dioxide exhaust from breath. Just my personal experience.

I have two NXG rechargeable head lights and for & £12 quid a piece they are superb.
I use the Led Lenser MH6 headtorch.
Very decent little piece of kit!
It's compact, powerfull and you can use both the provided rechargable battery or take it out and put 3 AAA batteries in.

I've had the head torch in the link for around 4 years now and it's been brilliant. It can be low light or really bright. The battery lasts well off a single charge. It's really lightweight too. I'd highly recommend.

ive got the Ridgemonkey VRH300 .. cant fault it TBH.. battery last for ages.. the green lamp can attract mozzies mind..
I have two NGT rechargeable head lights. Green Red and white good length of use a (a few hours) and excellent lighting.
Pretty comfortable to wear and at £12 a piece well worth it.

Another vote for the ngt lamp. I have a couple of retina melting lamps for on the rocks but use these little rechargeable ones for wading and fresh. green, red and white all have a couple of light levels and last forever on low.

Agreed.. I have one in my tackle bag and a spare left in the car. Always carry a portable charger for my phone so can always charge the torch up. Great piece of kit.

The one in your link looks like a newer model of the one I have, never need it on full power, the moveable head means you can put the light where you need it, runs on 3 AAA batteries, I bought some recharchable ones with a high MAH rating, apart from my other one with adjustable red or white light it does me

I think having a few in your armoury helps.
I have the LED Lenser MH10 & the H14R, both rechargeable and both very power full, some petzel, energiser, fox halo etc that ive had for years.
Would not be without the LED lenser types for anything for some of big French lakes, just in a different league, you have to clip on the red lens though that's the only bit of messing if your bothered, but i cant see what im doing with the red light on so a bit pointless for me.
Yes been infested with mozzies and moths at night but my reading glasses help here.
The other "normal" ones are ok round the bivvy and keeping the light levels down if needed, plus you can keep these round your neck .
As above you need a mixed bag.

The energiser ones are very decent for the money, but I find the batteries don't last particularly long. I have the 300 & 400 lumen versions for my barbel fishing and both cost well under a tenner. But always carry spare batteries if you subject them to regular prolonged use

I bought one of these recently after reading a recommendation on here. 3 nights in and I think it's fabulous, really small and light and very bright if needed. The way the buttons work is great too. I paid over £30 for mine though 🙈

I also bought one after recommendations on here. The head torch itself is great. My only issue is the way it attaches itself to the headband. Do you put the headband on first then clip the light on underneath it? That's what I've been doing and it doesn't seem very secure.

Mine had the headband already connected and hasn't been an issue at all. Don't think mine clips on to the band, it's permanently fixed?

I will stick with my fenix,does everything I need it to.The run times on the nitecore are not that good but I suppose for most fishing situations it's fine

The run time is fine on the Nitecore, and if you have a busy night then just give it a boost the next day, we all have power packs to charge our phones or bivvy lights with a charger combined

Well the Nu25 has 360 lumens and for my money thats perfect power output
the 32 has a much larger light output (( 550 Lumens ))
and of course bigger drain on the battery and I just donrt see the need for these stupid bright lights unless your trying to see a baitboat at over a hundred yards or something

After my Coleman headtorch died on me on my first outing of the year when the restrictions were lifted I came on here to see what was recommended.
I ended up getting the nitcore and have been thoroughly impressed. It's very small which I prefer and also the lock function to prevent it being accidentally turned on is a game changer for me. Charges quickly and I have topped up on bank with a power pack and wasn't too draining.

I've had a few head torches in my time and the Nu25 is by a long way the best I've owned, no carp tax too.

NU25 here too, as recommended by a few here and particularly Gerry, if he recommends something it's worth taking notice.

NU25 here based on Gerrys recommendation. So good I bought a spare too! Plenty bright enough, light and battery lasts well. Maybe if I caught more that could be different!!

Yes had my petzel for years it was the dadfy with the flip down red screen but things move on and the NU25 is in a diffent class all together IMHO

Just went out in the dark with my Energizer Vision Ultra HD Rechargeable.
On the stand white: Wow what a light, on the green setting it gives more than enough light to illuminate your fishing spot in the dark.

At the end of the day they are both just boring head torches and definitely nothing to get excited about. It will be a sad day if I ever start getting excited about a head torch, a new car or a holiday to the Maldives mebees but i certainly wont be nursing a semi over a head torch!

Sounds like I'll be sticking with my energizer for now then.
I'm getting wary of the flavour of the month products on here tbh, between a wobbly tripod, toppling stove and a sleeping bag with an inner skin held in place by a strand of cotton I might aswell look at carp ology reviews

I've got a Petzl Zipka that's the one with thin elastic strap.
I wear it like a wrist watch most of the time which is more comfortable and I can put around my head within a couple of seconds.
I've got an older version but this is the latest version. It's not the brightest but I hate bright lights.
I also have another headtorch with a red lens but that only gets used for close up work in the middle of the night which I try to avoid.
Bonus is with it on your wrist, turned on and arm extended you can do a good Buzz Lightyear impersonation with it.

can get a led lenser seo7r for about 40 quid,and you can buy spare rechargeable battery to take if your doing couple nights. never missed a beat

Nothing, it's a headtorch. All it needs to do is light up so no need to spend anywhere near that kind of money. A little £5 job from b and m will do, or a lower end petzl. The more expensive ones are too bright imo

Even 100 lumen is more than enough for most when fishing, but if you cannot tolerate white light in the dark it becomes a different story, waterproof is also important when winter fishing.

Agreed. Some nice touches like it switches off after being on a setting for a short while instead of having to cycle through, but other than that it's no better or worse than the £15 ones I've been using for a while.

Just to add to my previous comment that the Nitecore NU25 is decent at best, last night I put it through the wash (doh!) and it's still working perfectly. Has to be worth a few marks that does.

but I only use the Nitecore rechargeable now, the separate buttons for red and white and the sequence of brightness for the white light (3 stages up to the brightest) are really well thought out. And it is unbelievably lightweight.

Another nitecore nu25 here, I brought one that I didn't need on the backnof gerry recommending it and all the praise people had given it.
It's amazing it doesn't blind you or light up the whole lake it's comfortable to keep on your head at bed time it's just perfect thanks for the reccomndation now if I could find a rod pod that performed so well all round I'd be a happy man and less out of pocket lol

Do people really sleep with a head torch on? That would give me a headache. Just wear it round your neck.

I don't zip door down unless rain is coming in, trainers on, bag unzipped, headtorch on my head....... Ready to be out of bed and on the rod quickly. I've listened to people unzip bag, rustle around, unzip bivvy door then get to the rod ages after a run starts, too long in my opinion
Ps last few trips I've used slip on clog type shoes

Sod that, used to and it just ruins kit. I have my shoes by the bed, headtorch round my neck.dont use anything with a front so no door to deal with, and fish tight clutches to stop the run screaming off like many seem to like .

I didn't put wet muddy shoes in a bag, only if dry lol. And the bag can get aired out and maybe should wash it

After my last long break from Carping (6yrs) my Lenser HR7 was fooked - the battery compartment had verdigris everywhere and even Dalectronics could not revive it . . .I gently moaned to Lenser customer services (even though I couldn't find the original receipt) as a punt and they sent me another one . . £FOC!
They didn't even ask for the original one back . . .amazing!

Bought the Nitecore NU25 on the recommendation of this forum, and its excellent. Small, light, and like the way when you switch it on its at its les brightest and you need to press again for brighter, rather than the other way round, bright to duller.

I've had a few different makes over the years such as fenix, petzl etc but have settled on the led lensers for the last few years. Currently have an mh10 and the newer h7r core. I can't talk about battery life with the h7r yet as its reasonably new but the mh10 I've had for a couple of years and the battery life is absolutely phenomenal. I fish regularly so its used week in week out and in the 2 years I've literally charged it a handful of times not because its needed it but because i thought I'd better had. It seems to run on magic lol!
