I've just watched catching the biggest carp in the lake on YouTube.
Mark it seems has no problem fishing with a double hook for carp. It's about 48 minutes in and he clearly states he was using vb double hook.
I would ban him from every water in the country.

I can't imagine that's a great idea given how pressurised our fisheries are nowadays but it's fairly common place outside the U.K. I watched a vid in Chicago, 2 people fishing for Carp with barbed trebles and losing a lot of them due to snags. I know Carp are viewed with disdain by a lot in the US but you'd think common sense would say no...unless you're eating the fish.

In his book, "Carp and the carp angler", George Sharman has a photo of his hook box and in it are some double hooks taken from the salmon fishing fraternity. Page 223 for those who have a copy.

There are different types of doubles, a lot of Salmon ones are angled like a V, Pike ones are back to back etc

Double hooks have been banned by my club for decades. Mind you they ban everything, I'm surprised we are allowed to use a carbon rod.

I'm not sure how you're coming to that conclusion but for clarity no...and I would certainly not use one myself, unless it was the back to back hooks used for Pike dead baits
EDIT, as for Perry, wth? How does explaining there are different types of double hook mean I agree with there use for Carp?

Thanks for clearing that up. Without going and watching the vi's. What's his reason for using a double hook..
I remember Bernie Loftus, bless him coming in for a bit of stick using a rig with a small I believe size 18, 16 hook attached to the shank just below the eye on the inside of the hook. The reason behind it I believe was to help the hook take hold in the bottom lip.
But two hooks the same size, really.

I watched the clip briefly and Mark Holmes was talking about seeing carp eating fry predatory and he got white bait and used one of them on a double hook. He seemed to say he mounted it side on to the hook.
I think in context it was talking about predatory fishing for carp with dead baits not using double hooks in more a conventional presentation such as hair rigs etc
irrespective, I cant see many lake owners thanking him for that nugget of information

He staits he mounted a small whitebait with a vb double hook. He was definitely talking about using it to catch a 50lb common. To me he was carp fishing with the rig.
There was a fish in savay in the days of Rob Maylins books called the bad mouth fish. It was so called because it was caught with a double hook rig in its mouth , It had caused considerable damage. I can't imagine the damage it could cause.
Have a watch of the YouTube clip and make your own mind up.

He does seem to over think it Mark Holmes.. but it does catch him a few
So more power to his elbow. But there has got to be easier ways to catch a Carp than using double hooks and dead baits.. me personally I'd of gone in with the spinners..

I came across someone who played around with using two separate hooks.
The second hook was at the end of hair.
I can't remember what bait it was, it definitely was not boilies, probably soft luncheon meat or similar.
I never found out whether it was successful

I've seen people use something simular as a way of mounting maggots. Hooking the maggots onto a small hook on the end of the hair and then pulling it into a piece of plastic sweetcorn which is already on the hair to secure. The small hook shouldn't really come into play when hooking a fish.

This is like watching a tv episode from the 70/80's and applying modern attitude/standard on it and slagging it off.
What's the point?... None whatsoever imo.

Watched the vid - Mark Holmes is a proven angler and has probably forgotten what most of us on this forum currently know . . .I don't think hes advocating using a double hook per se; this was a deadbait set up designed to catch a specific fish with the double hook presumably to assist mounting the bait (akin to a bait screw in boilie terms).
However it does beg the question; other than the obvious potential damage if / when using a sea fishing style double / triple dropper why is it cheating / unfair specifically using a V shaped Salmon hook? BTW I'm neither about to use / or advocate this, but who made up the rule that a single hook is any less damaging than a double V (in terms of carp or any other non-predatory species for that matter) and that is therefore, our only option. . .?

I think the state you see some fish mouths on waters where only single hooks used is evidence enough.
Most people like to catch a fish with a mouth and theres also the problem if your line were to part then a double hook could have 'sewn' the fishes mouth up making it harder to get rid of hook and not being able to eat at all
I think its just as bad when you see a lot of the pike that get caught with whacking great lures, one treble is in the side of the head and the other barely in or just outside the mouth and that seems to be classed as ' caught '. You might as well just use a seine net. I know theyve got huge mouths to fill but but c'mon.
Also, id imagine most salmon a for the table so a double hook is the least of its worries.

Get the point about eating - if you're fishing for the table fish care itself is largely irrelevant. Question is when did using double hooks for catch and release / non predatory fish not become the expected norm / sporting choice? Dont want to open a can of worms here (pardon the pun) but is it in the fishing byelaws for coarse fishing (excuse my complete and total ignorance if it is) or just something we assume is 'the rules' / private lakes insist on?

Didnt think double/ treb hooks would have been the 'expected norm' for catch and release ? If i understand that correctly ?
I would assume it was progression from using double/ treble hooks for food fishing to single hooks to make it more sporting and conservational to the fish. Just like going from large barbs to mostly microbarbs/ barbless hooks.
Either way im glad it is mainly single hooks for the vast majority of fishing

Sorry - typo - 'NOT become the expected norm' . . . ! Your assumption is most likely correct however I'm not trying to be controversial, just questioning hook usage . . . and who specifically decided a single hook was the only reasonable choice

He definitely didn't describe impaling the whitebait on one part of the double hook, both hooks were exposed.
I remember having a chat with a friend about rigs and I said "I wonder how many more we'd hook if we used a treble"? "perhaps we should try them"? And then we both laughed. I wonder?

No problem,
Could of been as simple as one bloke fishing with his treble hook and his two mates turn up needing a hook - pair of pliers and a bit of bodging theyre all fishing !
Essexandy Reckon youd hook a lot more on trebles but the mouths wouldnt last long and theyd all look like match lake fish
who'd want to fish for those ? and lets face it, its just not cricket is it

Somebody will watch that and come up with an idea of combining that db hook and the twig rig and think it's going to be a good idea

Oh we'd undoubtedly catch tons more and it would become very boring very quickly. Oh their poor mouths would be destroyed in no time at all.

Yes they would get completely destroyed plus as already mentioned any lost fish would have very little chance of getting rid of the hook. With the likelihood of a terrible outcome
I once saw a 20lb carp accidentally caught on a pike anglers deadbait rig with two trebles the mouth was a complete mess an unfortunate occurrence, i personally dont think mark should have mentioned the hook as it will put ideas into others heads.

Playing devils advocate, wouldn't having two hooks side by side gain a better hold, thus avoiding ripping? If two hooks are embedded, neither are likely to tear as it also requires the second hook to lose its grip? Have seen some evidence previously of how a thicker gauge Size 1+ hook which both enters and exits the lip is least likely to tear due to have more stature than a size 10 which is just nestled in the flesh.
I'm a big believer that the bigger the hook, the lesser the damage.

The trouble with any rig with two hook points is if you have a crack off or get cut off or snagged. At the very least you would have a badly damaged mouth. At the worst you could have a carp with its lips sealed. The whole point of this thread was a so called named angler has at least once used what we called in the past a death rig.

And some of you lot wonder why you end up with stupid contraptions like the Twig? The idiot is a disgrace to carp fishing, always has been, always will be. No wonder all those horrible back garden pond fish all have ripped to kingdom come mouths.
Double and treble hooks, are for hard boney mouthed predators. Fish that attack other fish. They are designed by mother nature to strike at other fish. They have hard very boney mouths for this purpose. It's ethical to use doubles and trebles on them as it's so hard to get a point to penetrate. The VB hooks in question being spoken about here are salmon hooks. Predator hooks.
Carp have very soft, fleshy mouths. Like roach, like Rudd, like Tench. Since the beginning of angling as we all know it.... You do not use hooks meant for predators on these fish.
We are not savages. We do not eat them. There is a degree of sporting ethics in what we do. Double hooks and treble hooks should NEVER be used on carp. Full ****ing stop, no excuses. You can mount a live bait on a single hook very easily.
This is why you will never see people like him on any proper lakes. Going on soppy podcasts and chatting about stuff like this is just insane. Has he completely lost his marbles? Or just trying to remain relevant for some free kit.
The late Paul Forward (proper angler) was so right in everything he said about this bloke and his type in his CW articles.
Well done OP for highlighting this. You are 100% correct.

Thanks Andy.
Just to put some context on my previous comments. Look at the photographs below from the Shimano Isolate bait page. That went bust rapid, despite having the biggest budget in carp fishing behind it. Where are his 'cured' hook baits now? Where is anything whatsoever baitwise from him?
Carp fishing has suffered as much as everything else with the culture of celebrity. It came with the internet. Shouty people put themselves forward, media bigs them up and carp fishing proclaims them as stars. It's like a snapshot of this forum. There are some great anglers on this forum who remain completely silent in the shadows. They do that, whilst the shouty ones do all their shouting, with zero whatsoever to back it up. That's the internet for you.
You end up with The Twig, or Isolate bait. Absolute crap. From completely clueless celebrities in reality. Who's to blame? This man has, lets call it 'led astray' UK bait companies, Japanese owned bait companies and novice carp anglers at shows for years. Speak to any bait company he has been at. All absolute fluff and bluster. Celebrity culture with zero to back it up. Those two articles I wrote on the RMC forum about salt cured boillies and fermented garlic hemp that were reproduced in CW by him, served him very well for a while. The thing is, curing is a name given to what I do with the hook baits by me. There is no name for it. It's something that I came up with, a process. So I had to name it. Shiesters like him have tried to do what they do off the back of that. They have zero clue what I'm even talking about, only what I've told them publicly. Nothing.
The post itself, you do realise that's him chatting about himself in the third person, right? The fish, it's mouth is absolutely butchered beyond belief. The sort of thing you expect to see on a day ticket 10lb fish. Not a big UK carp. VB double hooks?

Thanks Andy.

The distended bottom jaw is from having no scissors left. It's quite common on fish that are hooked far to many times. You very rarely see it on big carp who's mouths are totally formed. You normally see it on fish that are angled for as babies, when their mouths are far softer and susceptible to damage. The scar damage on the outside of the bottom lip shows it too. All carps mouths big or small are nailed on to get butchered using double salmon hooks on 50lb fish.
Forget that, that's just clutter anyway. This was just one photo I could find doing a quick google search. I have seen him holding so many big carp with absolutely mullered mouths. Real carp anglers of a certain age and standing know exactly what type of fish he angles for.
Double hooks have zero place in carp fishing. None. Not for any reason whatsoever. Apart from real desperate anglers.
The post is more about celebrity. And all the absolute bullcrap that comes with it. There are fellas on this thread proclaiming him some knowledgable chap.. I'm sure he's a very good angler. But he is also a complete shiester.
Carp fishing is littered with these blokes. Absolute Joey's in reality in real fishing terms. You will never see any of them ever fishing anywhere proper, because they can't. Never bumped into Mark or Ali anywhere i fish. Never would. Yet they are on the internet, YouTube, mags before that, screaming to novice anglers. They actually start to believe the crap spoken about them by their novice fanbase, and it gets worse and worse.
The question you have to ask yourselves is, are you the 'target' of this type of thing? Or are you an angler who see's through it all. Because these blokes are put forward to target a certain grade of novice angler. The type who spend lots of money, and will swallow their absolute waffle. Always been this way. Celebrity anglers put forward to make you spend your money. Most of them are absolute nods in reality.
It's led to carp fishing pretty much going backwards, not advancing.

I'll wait for one angler, to tell me just ONE bait that he has anything to do with, that has done anything at all whatsoever? Just one. In over twenty years?
I already have the answer.
How many blokes have paid to go see him at carp shows and bait talks? Many thousands. Absolutely any of you could have done the exact same thing. You just need to be a self promoter and an attention seeker. Carp fishing will embrace you. There are many bait companies and tackle firms desperate for some sort of exposure. It's like a vicious circle.
It's built on sand. You end up with the Twig, and Isolate bait.

That's right. Nothing. Whatsoever. In an hour not one of you has named one bait.
So the celebrity bait man, who 1000's upon 1000's have paid to go see and talk about bait at shows. He has not even one half decent bait to his name? Now he is telling novices to use blast frozen white bait on double Salmon hooks. The carp bait man? PMSL.
Yet he is so knowledgable according to many? Why? Because the magazines who relied on people like him to make you buy the magazine in the first place, told you so? Wake up.
If you lined up at shows to let these blokes sign things for you, then you were helping to create the problem that has led carp fishing down the path to where it is now in 2024. It's very simple.

That is why I don't believe in the slightest that magazines died due to printing costs. They died because of the content. Some magazines have managed to keep their clientele by reproducing the same thing over and over, or just rehashing bro-science that fell out of favour after a year because people realised it made absolutely zero difference. It's why magazines now have to rely on social media and YouTube to maintain viewership. Fishing for clicks, in the hope that people will also buy the printed versions.
Companies aren't daft. They need to bring out the 'next big thing' to keep the punters fed. It's no different to technology and automobiles. The new iPhone, the new GTX graphics, The new Audi. The shot on the hook rig, lead clips, bait soaks... if you promote it enough and create that FOMO, you are laughing. Ali is laughing. Until moments like this when it goes one step too far.

I was in Ted Carters / Angling direct Preston a few years ago (probably 10 years ago seeing how time flies) and he happened to be in there doing a bait talk.
I stayed for a while, until I couldn't manage another 'the simple reality is...' then left.
I was the only one listening on that occasion

And referring to himself as Holmesy!
Now then boys and girls, listen to Holmsey- 60 years ago we used “air rigs and boilies for carp, I ad a 64 and 56 before Walker ad his record and I actually caught the common Walker ad from London Zoo, I knew the zoo keeper as e took a Penguin off my hands that I kept for it's eggs, Penguin eggs are high in fatty fats that listen boys and girls when the temperature gets t 16.2 they seek out Penguin fats.
What you want is the eaviest ook possible, I had a 36lb Rudd out of a laboratory tank in 72, there were three of us fishing for it, days only, this one morning I forgot my thermometer but I'd seen one stuck ta side of tank, 21 degree it showed and I saw the fish clear as day, I'd got a grappling ook off my wife's boss, and sharpened it with a nail file and end f a swan Vesta box, then were days. Listen boys and girls a tip ear, go on fat and over 40 porn site and order post menopause ***** cream, big ook,, eavy ook and smeared with cream, I ad it that day - nobody could believe it.
All this underwater rubbish, I've fished tanks and garden ponds stuffed with big pigs, and fish to locate - sorry for another day, but I cast out a 72 yard hooklink, with a small mesh bag, 50 yards and caught 3 x 40s same day, not on on the same rig, but on same bloody cast.
