Are there any commonly held beliefs within carp fishing that you believe are rubbish or have disproved yourself?

To kick things off, I don't believe seagulls grab every single boilie that gets put out by a throwing stick. I've seen them grab the odd one but more often than not I think they see the splash of the boilie hit the water, dive in after it, but actually fail to grab it.

I don't believe that a single gull can get every bait. I do believe that when there about 8 of them hitting every throw they do a decent job. Particularly the black heads.

"they don't take floaters in here" heard many times. if the fish aren't taking floaters infront of their swim, they don't bother to go and look for them

That only this bait works on here, or won't catch on pop ups.

Yet I'm still to find a boilie or pop up that hasn't worked on a single lake

Them:They don't respond to loads of bait
Me:proceeds to have 5 runs including 2 x20's and an 18.5 and. Lost fish and a tench over big bed of bait over 3 days

Same lake
Them:The polish have had all the fish out of here they come with boats and vans
Me:how can they when there's loads of deep silt and you can't tell me the houses opposite doesn't have either a carp angler or knows someone who is a carper and they'd be watching the lake, also lake is very overgrown and has islands as well I'd imagine it's difficult to net without being obvious plus area is a neighbourhood watch.

Had another dog walker tell my brother when he was walking his dog around another lake nearby that there's no fish in the lake, the lake then throws up a 43lb carp by a known bait maker local to me and the reason people were being told there no fish in the lake was that fish and also they were saying all this as the locals who fish it didn't want any new people there.

The same people who tell you about HNV theory, also tell you carp love tiger nuts so much, that they will keep eating the same ones over and over again, getting no nutritional value and lose weight.

Pick one. They both can't be true

That there's a rule book carp follow.
Every venue you go to you hear “they don't follow the rule book in here”

Clearly no rule book then is there!

Another one
Trampy looking guy in a shell suit Asks me if I've caught
I say no mate he says “it's a f#*king easy water as he staggered off clutching his can of kestrel super cider(it's a public open lake but can be hard to catch from)
Now considering I've never seen the guy fish or even seen him ever again I have to admire his knowledge of the water
Maybe he saw 6 of me (with his blurry alchol fuelled vision)fishing the lake instead of just me after drinking his special drink
😂😂😂😂

You should have been in that swim last Friday, the "big one" was caught in it. Thinking to myself, I was in this swim last Friday and nothing happened then, or the day before or the day after and I'm still here on the Sunday.

I always move into your swim four days after you have left when the fish move in over all your bait you put in and pull them out. Thinking to myself, No you don't, I leave on a Sunday morning and return on the Wednesday morning 3 days later for my next session till Sunday morning in the same swim and I never even see you on the lake and I rarely put much bait out and usually just fish small stick mix's.

I think most 'theory' that has been taught in the last 20 years has been nonsense. Especially when it comes to what a carp can see and feel. The industry has consistently contradicted itself by bringing out camo leads, whilst at the same time encouraging people to use bright colours. Why bring out a camo hook and preach one thing, then bring out a coloured 'kicker' to use less than an inch away, then with bait, they tell people to 'match the hatch' one minute, then the next tell them to stick a 12mm 'topper' to get them to notice the hookbait?

As written above, there is no rule book. Get them feeding hard enough in the right place and everything else is negligible.

Controversial!!
90% of people know that they came from Canada, but there's also that other 10% that tell a very convincing story that they came from a certain very large reservoir in deepest, darkest Essex!

Scale down in winter use smaller hooks and Fluro so they can't see the end tackle and then saying use bright colored pop ups because the carp eyesight isn't as good in the winter because their metabolism slows down. Which one is it?

Yeah. Why scale down when the carp are at their least discriminating as far as rigs are concerned.
Location is the most important thing in cold weather.

It's called a sale pitch, catches the gullible, not fish

Let's face it, we are in an era now where a lot of folks have to ask the bloke in the next swim if they have tied their hook on correctly. People have been conditioned so much by all the online cod's wallop they can't even think for themselves anymore, only drive to the shop to buy the next most not needed “needed” item

I had a few years without doing any serious fishing and last season got right in to it and went mad thinking about rigs and set ups. Went in total circles for a month or two then went back to basics and remembered it's all a load of total ********. The media definitely does a good job of making carp fishing sound far more complicated and sophisticated than it is, all in the name of sales. I'd been fishing 20+ years so god knows what it's like if someones new to it all.

"Lumpy guts hasn't been out for over 6 years"

On open acces waters, people claim that certain fish haven't been out for X amount of time. How could you possibly know what has and hasn't been caught, when anyone can turn up and fish.

I've been told that there's sturgeon in the lake or a catfish and even oh there's just 2 tench in here.....how do you know ?
Although I had 1 tench in august from there I have been fishing this lake for almost 9 years so maybe that could be true as I've never had any other tench or any other type of fish

I heard on a podcast the other day that carp have bad eyesight (he was justifying the use of a flavour) and the host did not disagree. If that's the case the carp in my lake must have gone to Specsavers.

One of our lakes had a "rumored ," catfish in it. Went either uncaught or unreported for years as the instructions were that it had to be removed when caught. It was eventually caught at 32lb as far as I know and removed from the lake. I'm not sure what happened to it as they aren't allowed to be stocked into other lakes as far as I know.

There is an all round carp rod that is great from the margins to the horizon, for zigs and range fishing!

And

“I just want to find an unspoilt big pit with no other anglers”. In my experience most anglers are lost without the security of known swims and spots!

I'd agree with you on the rod issue, however surely people can walk a lake and find the fish. I've never been a slave to only fishing to known spots.

Not doubting that you would do this but most don't. I've seen too many pits that have cheap tickets and a good head of carp be completely ignored for years with hardly anyone choosing to fish them. Then a couple of people publicise results, the good swims get known and dug out and suddenly there is a queue to join!

Not knocking people for doing this as everyone is different but I am convinced that 100x more people think that they want to be pioneers vs. take the opportunity to be one even when it is on their doorstep.
