Is there any difference between the two? Also how long will shelf lifes last as there must be a point when they start to go off.
In reply to Post #1
Shelf life's will last for years and maybe even longer if stored correctly. personal choice I have always used the frozen but always keep couple of bags shelf life in the van for emergency and cant say I have noticed any different.

Apart from the added preservative and possible longer drying time I was led to believe they were the same.
When I used their baits and I do the same with all my shelf-life baits I try to store them in a cool & dark place and as airtight as I can.

Have said it before but I was always a freezer bait person and wouldn't go near a shelf life bait. Been on DNA for many years now even before they done shelf life. But I lost access to a bait freezer which coincided with the release of the shelf life baits so made the switch (no pun intended) to shelf life baits and they are identical and not had any noticeable effect on my catch rates. So much so that I have a bait freezer again now which I've had for 3-4 years but just use it for particle and have carried on using the shelf life boilies

Not just DNA but other than convenience I can't believe shelf life's would ever be as good. I make bait and also use a smaller suppliers bait, all frozen. I know that preservatives have come a long way, however if global food producers struggle with human grade preservatives I'm pretty convinced that the fishing industry is not streets ahead.
Obviously it depends on the make up of a bait, but to say that protein meals are still as effective and taste the same seems alien to me. I think a lot of success I see is regards ‘fresh' shelf lives, where testers get through then when still fresh.
If you ever get the chance to watch fish up close or feed in a garden pond, it will always (in my experience) be paste - fresh- shelf life in that order.
So for me no matter how small the percentage it makes I would use fresh / frozen for confidence. On easier / takes water I would be less fussed and catching 4 instead of 5 is not as important.

normally Frozen are not the same at all !!!
the reason being the frozen ones would very quickly go rotten unless you really air dried them so they were rock hard with zero moisture
and some baits its not even possible to make a shelf life version CELL being a classic example

Which put baits with special ingredients actively working as soon as you take them out of the freezer in a funny light.

I have to use shelf life baits now, but would prefer to use frozen if I could. I think shelf life baits take longer to become "active" . Unless pre soaked. A good bait will become active in the swim pumping out come and eat me signals immediately. If you have to air dry it or use chemicals to stabilise it then it takes longer, and may benefit from pre soaking. Some baits are better than others in this respect. You have to choose which suits you and your situation the best. Sometimes a mix of both can be useful, especially if you feel having to regularly recast will put the fish off.

I'm sure that baits that are available in Shelf life and frozen are more attractive instantly in Shelf life due to the addition or preserving process, sugar syrup and glycerine.
The frozen version becomes more attractive after day 3 as the sugars, salts and enzymes come to the surface, either in the bag, or in the water.
I have used food baits that are available in Shelf life only (Rod Hutchinson KMG), and am very happy with them and my results on Alton Water.
I've also used a mix of baits, shelfies and frozen in a couple of brands, and when I was using Solars Seafood Takeaway tended to bait up a mix of both on Brackens and the lagoons at Nazeing. If I was in an area with few crayfish I'd usually use a shelfie on the hair as they were harder than the frozen.

I use a fair bit of Dna mainly slk and S7 last 10kilo of slk I had of them to keep me freezer topped up was pale with zero smell. Emailed them with batch number got told it was a new milling machine that had caused it. Zero smell to it obviously forgot to add key ingredients. Pity cos I like there bait and use around 60 kilo a year but thinking of going over to trent. Didn't like the bull**** lie.

Don't you just love chinese whispers!
I'm not sure where 'milling machine' has come from as why would we use that in the process of rolling bait?
Since we purchased a new larger extruder during last for the main rolling line, the baits have lightened slightly (i do have a pic on my phone somewhere that shows this). This is due to the heat produced by the speed it runs. We have since actually slowed the line slightly to make sure the bait looks better costing production time.
Please don't accuse DNA of doing anything underhand when anybody that knows anything about me or the company is well aware of our morals and transparency in regards to producing quality bait. Any accusations you level at the company i take very personally. As far i am concerned every bait that goes out of the door is my responsibility. I may not roll every boilie and pop up anymore, but i employ the staff that do, and in turn are responsible for making sure they do that process the way i would.
I am sorry that you were unhappy with the answer you were given but we can not be responsible for your suspicion I'm afraid.
The SLK and indeed any of the baits are just as good as they have always been.

Simple mate 2 bags of slk side by side one darker and smells like all the other Slk. Light one has no smell whatsoever still got a few left. Use them just as feed with S7. No they didn't offer to replace despite spending a fair amount. I will vote with my feet and use Trent from now on. I stand by what I say these had something missing i asked if they were infact a different bait. That's around £700 Quid going elsewhere. I may have got the milling machine and extruder mixed up. Been carp fishing 35 years I can tell 2 different baits apart. You admit that something was wrong when the baits went lighter so slowed down the process at the time. The rest of the stuff I have had has always been spot on.

Yes indeed it seems he was right to highlight a change in the product however the change did not warrant any reason for a refund and also the guy got confused as to the reason for this change.
Hardly Chinese whispers anyway supplier should inform customers of any change to the finished product, yes i know fishmeals and other products can have a slightly different profile from batch to batch but it seems in this case that was not the reason.

The service and products you receive from DNA is/are flawless. They send out bait quickly, they actually reply to emails. They let you know when their bait changes and it blooming well works. What more can you ask for from a bait company? One of the most professionally run companies in the game in my honest opinion.
The one time I had a courier issue (not DNAs fault) the young lady in the office couldn't have been more helpful. Whenever I've emailed Questions. They've replied within 24 hours. Keep up the great work Jase and the team. Some people are never satisfied.

Been toying with idea of using s7 but not sure yet my freezer is full at minute and my season ,weather permitting starts in less than 2 weeks all being well 4/5 days on the canal after another 30,planning to throw everything at it to get that mirror I want out,it's rumoured to have been out sometime last year at 35 plus and there's another 2 x 30's in there (I've had the common out already) but I've got 14 plus miles of canal to go at and it's going to be the first proper year I've given dna baits a try on there.

Sorry, as an old post, however just reading with interest. I have lost a bit of confidence in any shelflife boilie after listening to a Korda podcast with Dave Moore (I think) as it sounds like they are not likely to aid your catch rate.
Happy to make my own mind up, but I have to admit that it did put me off slightly as he definitely knows his stuff and have heard similar from others.

Dave Moore has his opinion and he's entitled to it. Plenty of other bait brains like Jason Rider will tell you the complete opposite, listening to all will just put your head in a complete spin.
Only advice I can give is that I've used DNA shelfies and always done well with them. Never once have I felt they hindered my catch rates and at times have helped. With shelfies I can keep 10kg in the car knowing it's there if needed and can fill it in if necessary. When using freezers I always was cautious with the amount of bait taken to avoid wastage and run out of bait on occasion.

That's a good point, ive spoken to the dna guys a few times on their live chat and they're always happy to help so if you're unsure then ask them,I use the freezer baits and any left over I chuck them back in freezer and reuse them but it's not loads,I also noticed last month the bug started to turn white and I had 2 runs had one lost one so maybe they are more attractive when they are turning, not sure if this can be done with a shelf life bait due to what's in them to keep them shelf life

There was an interesting post on the RG baits Facebook page the other week when they were implying one of their baits is better on the turn. It's not something I've ever tried having always tried to keep bait as fresh as possible. I've never been a fan of re-freezing bait either which is another reason I find myself using shelf life more and more these days

I've been on DNA baits for what must be pushing 10 years now. Was always a freezer bait person and hated the idea of shelf life. About 6 years ago I lost access to a bait freezer so was thinking of moving to a different company that provided shelf life. Coincidentally at the same time DNA brought out their shelf life baits so I simply carried on with DNA. After about a year or so I managed to get access to a bait freezer again but just used that for particle. Didn't see the point in switching back to freezer baits as I didn't notice any difference in my catch rates and having the shelf life baits was just so much more convenient so for the last 6 years I've carried on using them. Only time I've used freezer baits is if the rules state no shelf life baits are allowed

I've seen you say that a few times now, got to say it has me thinking about the shelfies.
Between about 2011-2014 I didn't get out often enough to justify a big freezer order so used Dynamite Shelfies, I was pleasantly surprised my catch rate stayed the same, not sure why but I was expecting a drop, guess it was years of reading bias against them.
Not sure if it was Jason at DNA I was speaking to, whoever it was said to think of their shelf life baits more as short shelf, certainly not as the old type of long life shelf life as they don't contain the same or same amount of preservative.

I had a similar conversation with the guys at Baitworks. Been using a lot more bait in my new syndicate and simply do not have the freezer space to store the extra and didn't want to keep ordering and paying delivery every time, but would have if that was what was needed. They told me that many of them use the shelf life version for convenience and only use the freezer baits when rules dictate. I've continued to catch well on the shelf life so no issues in using that predominantly going forward (although have just taken delivery of 10kg frozen bait Herb to try but if I like it will likely use that in a combination of frozen and shelf life). Talking to bait people, who know a hell of a lot more than I do on the subject seems the old ideas about shelf life no longer the case, as in both cases they were getting an order so no reason to push the one over the other

Strange isn't it, perhaps it's just something locked in anglers heads who are over a certain age. The Korda Boys using Mainline Shelfies will probably translate throught to the younger generation, who know's. I bought giant fish storage type polystyrene boxes for transporting frozen to France...a thing of the past now...hmm...odd thing is in the old days I only ever took shelf lifes (Nash Euroboilies...remember them...lol).
The Herb, funnily enough I was looking at that the other day, like the inclusion of Fenugreek. Had me thinking about the recent onion boilie thread and success I had on Secret Agent many years ago, even made my own Asafoeteda Oil when RH stopped selling it..fond memories stinking the house out

Some interesting points raised. Decision has been made for me on my current syndicate, as they do not permit shelf life, so I have to use frozen which is definitely not so convenient. Whether any better or not, I cannot say, as I still blank most of the time
Shelflife have certainly come a long way since the early days.
I use o use Jason A Baits all the time usually NB2 and Plum Zing and even though they were fresh shelf life i would always freeze them as soon as they came.
I'm currently using Trent Baits and I'm going to get a few bags of the stabilized range just to keep in the van.

What do you think of Trent baits? Freshwater shrimp has had great reviews and quite tempted to give it a go, just not sure if it is an all year bait?
Also like the look of bait works Atlantic heat. Almost too much choice these days 😂

I like it even though I've been using the Berry of late.
Baitworks is another brilliant company and love the Atlantic Heat.
Any decent bait on the market will catch you fish, its a confidence thing and unfortunately the first thing i chance when i don't catch will is totally wrong way of going about things.

I was on a Carpforum fish-in at Cromwell around 2004. Nobody caught in the night, next morning I saw some fish in the margin and chucked in some maple 8 that had started to turn and go white. I lowered a rig in, turned round to pick up some more boilies and by the time I'd looked back at the rod it was ripping off, the fish went left into the nature reserve and cut me off.
They were still feeding afterwards as well, Carpmanconway (Daz) had a go for them I think with corn and couldn't tempt one.
The smell from the Maple 8 when it turned white was something else, you could literally see and smell the sugars coming out of it.
Back on topic, I use DNA shelf life now, mainly for Barbel and mainly Bug and SLK mixed together. I've got 100% confidence in both.
