The year is1980. Ted Rogers stands next to a table with a married couple in department store clothing. On the table a number of items are rejected by the two. Our Ted then links the item in the most obsecure way, through a number of extremely tenuous links to a prize. The couple look completely bemused. Over the last couple of years, when chatting with other anglers on the bank, I've sympathised with these contestants. My lakeside cohort have on many occasions lived out the most incredible underwater scenarios in their minds. There's no way to disprove them, and nor would I, but it's exasperating when they catch and believe they planned it all the time. Only recently a fellow member caught from a swim 3/4 of the way down a resser to the dam wall, about 1200m from the small inlet stream at the pointy end. He explained that warm water was flowing in, following an old stream bed (the water is at least 200yrs old and has never been drained) and causing carp to congregate in front of his peg.

In the latest underwater video by Korda, DF shows a similar type of behaviour and we are subjected to a dillusionary debrief from the man who once again looks out of his depth, even dropping a rig at seven wraps. Tom Dove, who is a very competent angler, makes no effect on him with his logic and experience. There's someone else on the gravy train with a teddy bear but surely now this has got to be the end of this painful series.

I dunno - I quite liked it - much shorter and less drawn out; still interesting watching fish 'react' even if it is to ye olde Almond Smoke (sales must be in decline)

I bet looking at the old ones will raise some eyebrows today. The idea that carp can "suss a lead" and avoid it is laughable. Meanwhile, the bright pink object which mimics absolutely nothing in their environment gets sucked in and blown out three times.

We give them far too much credit at times.

Someone once told me that I shouldn't move the lead when I tighten the line as it would make a line in the silt and the fish would suss the rig. I just laughed

Moving the rig can potentially obscure the hookpoint . . .however without having a camera to check who actually knows?

The lack of ANY indication on the first failed take was arguably the most interesting bit - (presumably) a 3oz flat lead at 7 wraps fished on a slack line - a near 50 picks up the hookbait and lifts the lead with zero indication . . . .

I actually found the film interesting, I agree that we give the carp too much credit, and I do agree with Dovey in a few circumstances, I don't think the fish avoided the bait, just didn't go for it.

However, as mentioned below the zero indication on I'm guessing a slack line was very interesting, the lead obviously moved to nothing on the indicator.

Also seeing how much food 1 singular carp consumed in seconds was interesting, as someone who quite often fishes for a 'bite at a time' it makes me wonder how often I'm sat behind zero bait and just a single hookbait, which can obviously still work but isn't what I think im using.

I don't often like human analogies, but at the end of the day we all like food, and if there was a large table with just a Malteser on it, we may not even see it's there if we're just walking through the room. On the other hand, if you fill the whole table with Maltesers we'll notice straight away, we may even smell the chocolate itsself. Depending on our level of hunger, we may smash the lot, on other occasions we may take one or two.

Those fish are either wary of beds of bait as some reckon, or they just don't want to feed at that time.

We talk about bite times, we talk about being scared of big beds of bait, we talk about fishing singles then we talk about piling it in. I've absolutely hammered waters on large beds of particles whilst others caught less on small PVA traps. They may think because they've had 3 on small traps, you cannot catch 6 on big beds of bait because they've either A) not persevered with it or B) they're using it at the wrong time of year, or in the wrong situation.

You cannot create a competitive feeding situation with just a single fluro with a bit of roach food around it to protect the hookbait.

Ultimately, I think there's no right or wrong.

Rob Hughes did some really interesting underwater tests on lead and line lay. Based on this, and that it was slack or even semi slack its no surprise there was no indication, especially because the lead lifted vertically a few inches.

I do agree that its unlikely that it 'sussed' the hookbait, but be it a sales tactic or not, its hard to avoid the direct route the carp took to the pink hookbait, in comparison to the other times it fed on the free offerings, when it was grazing. But we all know a bright one can and does work at times, perhaps just because they are curious creatures and the mouth is the only way of 'testing' something.

Didn't really take anything away from the Korda underwater vid. Apart from a reminder how wrong a popup rig looks over crumb and particles.
Oh, and the awkward laughing at the bosses jokes.

Well I liked it. Given a straight up choice between that for an hour or love island then it's Korda all day long for me. I found it quite entertaining and learnt nothing.

I personally think watching carp feed tells you more about how to catch them than pretty much anything. Be that in the water or on film. As entertainment the film is a bit rubbish but as a learning experience all the underwater vids are great imo.

See I thought they did well to try and bring in the entertainment side to this one with a bit of banter etc.

Truthfully, every film is going to have people that like it and people that don't. I'm sure there are people who would prefer to go and watch Catching the Impossible and others that prefer Eurobanx. It's a massively diverse sport, they will never please everyone 😂

I guess it depends on what you're into?

Catching the impossible hasn't inspired me to dangle a Mackerel over the side of a boat for 30lb Pike, yet Eurobanks on the other hand got me onto public waters in France. If I wanted to travel 4 hours to be surrounded by 10 english blokes in a foreign country i'd go and fish in Birmingham.

For me not a truer word said, regardless of what they were speaking about the underwater footage was great. Always something to see and learn.

I watched the cypography one last week and to be fair i think that was better then the recent Korda one, as was longer and showed more detail.

Both rather useful regardless... the fact Fairbrass had never ate a boost was the most disturbing thing

Another vote for the boost!

The amount of bait consumed with each passing surprised me. Got me really thinking about feeding situations. That fish in only a few visits to the spot hoovered up quite a bit of bait. That was not a feeding frenzy, far from it, and so what must a group of fish that are ‘on it' be capable of devouring?

I had a conversation with my mates at our christmas social about the same thing. I reckon on a single over nighter that Im not putting anywhere near enough bait in. I think im ending up fishing singles a lot of the time by morning, I reckon that because Im paranoid about ruining the swim with too much spodding that Im actually spoiling my chances with not enough bait. When it warms up this year Im gonna put a lot more in.

Don't u think that the fish that hoovered up most of the bait come back and hoover up the rest including your hook bait?

I can't believe people fall for the spin.

Ps, those same fish come back to that spot when you and there's no bait there.

Let's use more bait.

Let's lose leads

Let's complicate a rig with more consumables

Wasting their time with me. I make my own.

Actually our conversation came about when we were discussing who the most successful and consistent anglers were on our waters and what they are doing different to us. The two main factors that we agreed on was a, time and b, use of a lot more bait than us.

Definitely time, that is always the winner.

Not so sure about bait. Over the years I've seen just about anything be the voug bait, the biggest unknown being banned baits, ie would the sudden introduction of say Tigers absolutely rinse a venue?

Id say no as it still comes back to being in the right place and that's water craft, something that's lost on today's instant angler.

I quite liked the video but do think baiting situation was totally worng. Too mixed up all over the place so fish could just go down and hoover everything up. Boilie only (big baits 24mm) would make them stay and pick up one buy one. Much easier to make a hookbait stand out.

Tough one isn't it, I think I heard them say it was early spring, not sure how early it was (it may have said and I missed it) but if it was March time then lighter tactics most of us may use. Hindsight is an amazing thing, I suppose we never really know if we caught the fish in spite of or because of our tactics

I wondered if the actually abandoned a few of the ideas they had due to the camera malfunctions. But having spent all that money they kind of cobbled something together. There was quite a lot of padding in that episode. People sitting at desks in the office etc. I think they might have been struggling for footage.

Take out all the banter, the big explanations of the camera set ups, multiple shots of casting etc and there was probably about ten minutes of actual fish in front of the camera in that whole hour long production.

I'm not knocking it. I enjoyed it. But I think if they were honest the fish stuff was probably a bit of a let down.

That is true but they had option to see what is going on. Another thing I would really like to see in underwater videos is pop up 20cm of the botton, so in carps face when they move in. There is so much to film underwater and try. I hope somebody does a video like that in the future. Try this try that... That would be one great video and something many would watch. So far not a lot was tested like that on underwater videos.

Same. In terms of actual underwater footage of carp feeding it would have to be regarded as a complete disaster. All of that pre-baiting and a whole week on the water and effectively they managed to encourage one, and occasionally two, carp to feed. Hardly riveting, but I enjoyed the banter between the three of them and watched the whole thing through so it was not a complete waste of time.

Firstly, I enjoyed the film but what I found interesting was the fact that as far as I could work out they were there for 2/3 days. If you were fishing there without the benefit of seeing what was going on, the chances are after that amount of time you might have moved from that spot.

I've never eaten a boost.

Agreed. All the presentations tried were variations on a similar theme. Would have been nice to see something blatant to see if the carp spooked off it.

I appreciate the work and video quality. But would like to see some variation. Locked up snag fishing, 3 rods on a spot. 3 different presentations see how they react. But still high quality free content

I actually really enjoyed this one, more so for the constant ribbing from Dove (reminds me of a few sessions with mates) than for the underwater footage.

Also interesting in seeing how much goes into making of one of these.

Overall if you don't like DF, you won't like this but it's worth a watch IMO

I quite enjoyed it from an entertainment point of view. Tom Dove seems like quite a nice and funny chap and Danny has kind of grown on me over the years. I don't take much if any of the ‘tactical' stuff too seriously in any fishing videos. I fish very simply as it's how I get the most enjoyment from it.
I think the way to make these sorts of thing more of a proper learning exercise is to have the angler just fish as he would normally fish and not see what's going on on the camera. However it's probably not a financially viable option.

I don't actually want to know what's going on under there, that's the magic. Unless im lucky enough to find a lovely little margin spot in a clear lake and I can watch them feeding i prefer it all to be a mystery.

I really want them to put 3 rods on the same spot. I don't believe for a second they spook of the hookbaits, sometimes they look like they're going for it, but then pick up something else near it. Do you honestly believe that if the fish spotted the hookbait and lead and marked it as danger, it would then happily pick up a bait 10cm away? No chance.

I can't help but think if you had 3 hook baits within a foot area, your chances of getting picked up would be a lot more than 3x the likelihood of just one hookbait.

A Tim Paisley anecdote from finding a Rod Hutchinson rig(s) on D lake at Waveney, 3 rigs on one swivel, think it was 2 bottom baits and a pop-up.
Hutchy's explanation:
"The carp twig that one bottom bait in the area is dangerous, they might twig that one pop-up and one bottom bait are dangerous, but no way will they guess that the third is not safe either.

I have actually seen fish spook off a bait, that same fish then pushed other fish away from the hookbait!

During the summer months i very often fish with a bottom bait out the bag....then use a stringer with bottom baits out the bag, followed by a glugged hi viz bait. I don't think it catches my more fish, but the theory is there. I'm always suprised it's not a tactic I've ever seen written about. Using 'decoy' hookbaits.

My theory is that 'fresh' baits are the danger bait, so I make my stringers with fresh baits, but the hookbait is 'old'.
I put my hookbait on when I arrive, obvious, but next day when I recast after reeling in to walk Sky, I don't change the bait, but put on new bait stringer.

I have been known to take hookbait off when I pack up, and put it back in a tub to reuse next trip.
