A chap going by the name of DonFrenchie_ on Insta has had Tilly the Common at over 50lb out of Bluebell and posted a video of his amazing capture.....great achievement.....but....he left the fish in an unzipped retainer hanging from a tree.....I kid you not....
Guy is getting absolute pelters and rightly so.

Apparently his mate told him to rest it in the sling for 10 mins so they had a cuppa. The guy didn't realise he meant in the water!
Edit: I saw this on FB so no idea if true. But I did see the vid which is poor form either way.

Yeah leaving it unzipped and unattended is bang out of order, however if properly zipped and the branch sturdy and secure its a valid thing to do, but not reccomended if you have the slightest doubt to the branches integrity

How can it be. If it flaps about it could easily smash itself on the trunk or worse still the sling could become unhooked and it fall onto hard ground.
I don't think there is any other way to safely handle a fish other than to leave it in the water until you are fully set up and it's rested. Then lift it out of the water, preferably in a retainer. Straight onto a decent padded mat with sides. Then weigh it. Keep it wet. Lift it for photos no higher than knee height. If it must be left unattended for a moment then that should be on its side in the mat. Then straight back into the water in the retainer for release.
Anything less than that on my waters would see you a. Banned instantly and b. Probably at risk of a smack off of at least one of the bailiffs and c. Probably black listed from any other water within about twenty miles.

I noticed Dave Lane didn't get all this flack when he weighed the burgfield common and most of his other bigguns on a tree. But tbf he didn't leave it 10 mins to have a cuppa.

Mate seriously there is nothing "valid" whatsoever about the whole sorry episode....under no circumstances should you leave a Carp, let alone a 50lb one suspended from a tree breach 4ft off the ground.

I couldn't believe what I saw with this video but even worse was his attitude afterwards telling everyone he does it all the time and he knows what he is doing.
What was shocking is in the bailiffs comments when someone mentioned banning him all he said was “if I was working I would of banned him” really? Surely all he needs to do is ban him with the evidence from the video? Maybe who ever runs bluebell should ban him still but apparently they won't 🤦♀️ It's crazy just goes to show what kinda circus it is up there now

You could say that of around 60% of waters I would bet?
Carpfishing is no longer about the fish, it's about peoples egos, their 5 minutes of fame and the chance of some cheap bait, that's the main motivation
All those complaining about fish care, just think yourselves lucky he didn't have a few in the night, could have been fish hung in trees all over the place

He's apparently been told it's fine to hang a fish from a tree just not to walk away and leave it there....
As Yonny said, there's plenty of anglers who have used a sturdy tree branch as a weigh crook but for literally seconds and over a mat and not dangling 4ft off the chuffing ground...
Chap says he has been fishing 25 years and has always done this....

He's a road-man wide-boy from the enzs it's a wonder he didn't shank it up for eating his Ghana bait without paying the "P" to the man.
I'm glad I dont fish the circus that is day ticket fishing "tooled up" literally means something else in his case.

Using a tree isn't the problem, its the wandering off for a cuppa and letting the fish flap around. I usually put one end of a weighbar in the crook of a branch and the other on my shoulder.
I'd rather use a tree than those tripod things with big fish TBH......

Yeah I'm not against using a tree to weigh a fish, especially if you're on your own. This prat wasn't so there is absolutely no need to do it. Two people and a heavy duty storm pole or a hefty branch if you have to.

It was probably nice and dry after 10 minutes too. Another thought from me, and something I don't think anybody cares about because we fish for them. All that mass sat on its internal organs that are usually suspended in water, and as usual dragging it to the bank with its lip, I suppose looking at it, leaving it with a chance of dropping a few feet from a tree onto the floor is something else

Going off on a tangent - people spend far too much time with fish out of the water getting shots. You see some fish photo'd from every angle on the land (and lets face it, it won't just be one pic from each angle), then the ubiquitous "in the lake shots". People checking the shots are ok before moving to the next angle - is it really needed? Chucking a bit of water over them every now and then isn't the answer, as below - think what their internals are going through.....

Is this the video the witch-hunt is based on with a bit of hearsay mixed in or is there proof he sat down for a brew?
To be fair he could well have gone to get his phone to make a social media post to friends the same as 90% of people probably do nowadays and it's been taken out of context. You can easily make scales more secure on a tree than holding them by hand, are we assuming a bloke who goes fishing can't tie a reliable knot?
It could all be true, but trial by social media based on that video isn't fair imo

The fish is four feet in the air, with no mat underneath it, against the tree trunk, with no one minding it and probably dry. Are you seriously saying that's acceptable. All of those are bad enough whether or not the tea making bit is true or not. It's hardly a witch hunt when he's filmed it himself Is it? The evidence is plain to see.

The guy in question is acting like hes not bothered but in a recent post its obviously bothered him a bit to go out and order a Nash weighing tripod but then he doesn't even get it out the box and says what a piece of ****, if anyone wants to pay him a visit for a shank up he's giving out his address but states do it by the weekend to get it out the way.
The level of intelligence by this guy is outstanding give your address out when he breeds French bull dogs for a living and has a house full of fishing kit, I'll hazard a guess his next post might be about getting turned over tackle and dog thefts are probably not things to be posting about and giving out a full address.

I mean let's just jump to assumptions that he is going to stab people because he's brown too **** it...
Like I said it may well all be true, but people are talking about fighting the bloke rather than educating others

Call me old fashioned but I came into fishing from the age of four, catching Roach and Perch on our local canal with my Dad and learnt how to handle small fish first but these days young and older people come straight into the sport wanting to catch big Carp, they often spend mega bucks buying what they want, they learn about casting, rigs and bait etc but the last thing on their mind is how to care for the fish, I see it on this and many other forums and hear the same thing in tackle shops, "Where can I find a day ticket water where I can catch a 30 or 40", not asking how do I deal with a big Carp if I catch one, there is nothing we can really do if this is what they want to do only hope someone experienced is close by to help

Nobody's talking about fighting him I mentioned that he has put a social media clip out himself offering people up to his place if they want to sort it out, In the posts I've made about the shank bit is irrelevant to the colour of his skin everything this guy puts out is like watching an episode of Topboy my bad for making a joke of it I'll hold my hands up poor show, but the guy is comical.
You cannot defend the inexcusable whether the fish was wet/dry, or he's had a cup of tea weighed from the tree or not the facts on show that cannot be defended is the sling is not fully zipped up hes walking from some distance away with his phone whether he's popped to his bivvy to quickly grab it or not it would take a split second for the fish to start flapping with how near it is to the tree to swing against it possibly harming itself or for the sling zip to pop open and the fish to fall to the ground with no unhooking mat underneath it it's just not good fish care of a fish of any size.
Have a look at Junior Obeng rather than donfrenchie top class helmet full stop.

To be honest I've not got the time or interest to look at anything else to do with it, but that video didn't look like conclusive proof of anything worth being threatened for. He wouldn't be offering to sort it out face to face without provocation, maybe not on here (though being called a bell end etc), but 100% he'll be getting grief on instagram and FB. Even more so now people are circulating his details

My sentiments exactly ... he´s a knobhead, end of
No excuses whatsoever
If you´re alone, after landing that "big carp", you either sack it or place it in a recovery sling, safely IN THE WATER, then either contact the Bailiff or another angler within the close vicinity, to help weigh & photo the fish. NO FISH should be left unattended ... END OF. Leave the fish in the water FIRST, then get all your camera gear, mat, setup. There´s absolutely no excuse to justify his actions. You don´t leave a carp hanging in a tree, to then run and get your phone(if that was the case, or run to get help)
Leave the carp in the water to recuperate, whilst you compose yourself, and have a quick cuppa, to ease the adrenaline rush, if one chooses to do so. Weighing from a sturdy tree branch isn´t the issue, if done RIGHT, taking all the necessary safety measures.
As a responsible angler, he should man up, admit the error of his ways, and realize that he has done wrong, and vow not to make that mistake again.

Fish safety. Always best to have another pair of hands if possible isn't it? Not that you shouldn't do it on your own but ideally you'd have someone to help you out. Whether that's to weigh it, do the pics, get the water bucket, make you a brew or whatever. Most anglers like to share that moment with someone don't they?

I go fishing for the peace and to enjoy my own company, and get away from people. Ive given up on asking others to help, as it is very rarely actually any help.
I make sure everything is ready before the fish comes out of the water, Water bucket, scales, camera etc. Set the intervalometer off on the camera and lift the fish. No need for anyone else, and hardly makes it any less safe does it.

A lot of us fish alone. You just get used to it.
If its a decent fish I can do a self.take easy enough.
I have a bankstick setup ready for the camera.
Scales are next to the cradle. Safety sling always across the cradle.

I do most of my fishing alone and never have issues with keeping fish safe and doing pics. Although self takes are never going to be better than photos taken by someone that knows how to use a camera. I know who id call if I caught certain fish to share the moment with.
My point is that if you catch a 50 on a day ticket venue there are plenty of people about to give you a hand if you're not entirely comfortable doing it yourself for whatever reason. Plenty of anglers reel in to go see the big fish when they've come out on waters don't they. So there is always a few hands on deck, “goalkeeping” as it's been called.
As safe as it is if you do things properly and you're prepared when on your own, it would clearly be even safer with someone else helping you out. Don't think anyone here is saying you should never fish alone or it's unsafe to do so, just that more hands on deck make it safer and easier. Not sure why people are getting offended/defensive about fishing alone.

Don't think anyone here is saying you should never fish alone or it's unsafe to do so, just that more hands on deck make it safer and easier. Not sure why people are getting offended/defensive about fishing alone.

My point is that if you catch a 50 on a day ticket venue there are plenty of people about to give you a hand
Or alternatively, use a tree

Alot of venues now ask anglers to call bailiffs if they catch fish over a certain size

I will bet you that this type of thing happens every single day in almost every single county. Only difference is it's not normally filmed and it's not normally 50+.

I don't fish lakes like this and probably never will just doesn't interest me but where I fish anyway fish care is paramount to me and yeah where you live or go to fish there will be people who don't care about fish care what ever fish you fish for.
I've seen people pike fishing and no net or possibly possibly unhooking equipment as well and a lot of these carpers I see on the canal or the public lakes I fish don't have unhooking mats with them at all.

Fished it myself on socials 3 times over a few years. Stunning place, has a bit of everything and has had some nice looking fish in it over the years. The pastime has changed radically and this is just one example of where we are now, banks packed out, screaming idiots (amongst the genuine folk) and lack of the basic fundamentals of the pastime, not just fish care! god I sound boring

Heff ... It´s not about dealing with a "big", alone. Fish care applies to all carp in the lake. If fish care knowledge is lacking, then you should seek assistance, but if you "actually care" about fish safety, then by all means do it yourself, and do it properly.
I too fish alone, and land some "BIG" carp, and handle weighing etc, by myself. I´ve stopped taking selfies of all my captures, but usually weigh & take mat shots, for documentation. I always have my tripod set up, with mat directly underneath, water bucket filled prior to lifting the carp out of the water.
1 - Carp recuperates in the net, in the water, after an adrenaline rush after playing the fish.
2 - Fill water bucket, and wet the mat.
3 - Net handle removed, and recovery sling slipped under the net with carp in it, and zip up sling.
4 - Lift sling out of the water & carefully place it on the mat.
5 - Remove the net, zip up the sling, lift & weigh the carp.
6 - Place sling carefully back on the mat, and unzip the sling
7a - If taking selfies, then organize your camera gear, tripod etc, mat position, should all be setup before step "1"
7b - If you´re not taking any selfies, then take afew mat shots, of both sides of the fish, if you choose to, and make sure you use your water bucket at different intervals.
8 - Place carp carefully, into the recovery sling, zip up carefully and place back into the water, and secure your sling, tied to a bankstick, for the carp to further recuperate, then release when the carp is ready to swim off.
Why is that so difficult to do
Simple fish care EVERYTIME, so no excuses.
Leaving a large carp hanging in a sling, from a tree branch, unattended, for a prolonged period, is definately BAD FISH CARE
Be reponsible for your actions !!!

I'm all for fish care. You could argue that all that zipping and unzipping is asking for trouble.
Unhook the fish in the net, get in the water for a photo or at worst break the net down and roll it to evenly distribute the load on the fish. Because as scozza says their organs aren't evolved to take the loads of slings and weighing.
And everyone that is pouring water or on the fish' gills, that's like stamping on your chest while you can't breathe I'd have thought. Given they technically need to pass water the other way to ‘breathe'?
I'm not sure I'd weigh a 40 or 50, anything really. I don't want to know, surely there has to be some mystery left or old fisherman's tales will become a bit bland

Was you that specified ‘big carp' mate. My question was more along the lines of why are you posting on here as if everyone else is an idiot, or everyone fishes on a close knit syndicate where everyone knows what they are doing. There are idiots out there, and not sure they really care either way. Can't treat everyone like they are thick based on the lowest common denominator, we aren't the government .
And thank you for your step by step guide, not sure what I'd have done without it

Has the mystery not gone already?
I am fortunate enough to know a few waters that see little action, I guess others do too. Most of the waters in the country everybody knows what is in them and the fish are lacking a lot of credibility for me, a 30 is just a 30, 40 or 50. At one time you were searching for waters (like the great mans book, still searching, what a tile!), nowadays there are loads of waters with said fish in, loads! It's conveyor belt carping too, well managed fisheries where nothing is irreplaceable and there are still loads of back up fish coming through to keep the punters coming, purely and strictly business, nothing to do with the foundations of this pastime sadly, all about the £
The wow factor has gone in a lot of cases for me, same old, same old (there's one, and there another one)
Every now and again though you see something special

I'm all about the fish care
That's why I intentionally never catch them - saves them so much stress and potential injury.
Nothing at all to do with my angling skills...
I'm with noj. If you can safely unhook in the water and let them rest up a bit there then why not? But I'm not one for the Facebook trophy shots so maybe it's simpler for me. If I caught a real monster then I guess a picture would be good to bore the wife with but I mostly fish solo so unless there's another angler nearby it's probably not happening

Deep margins, pair of chesties, it's feasible.
I don't think there are many carp anglers out there who will not weigh and photograph the fish they catch, we often wait long enough and we remember them with a trophy shot or two
One word, sensible
Couple more, knob heads
There is enough information around to tell or teach people how to handle fish correctly. Basic fundamentals of carpfishing, end of story.
How do we police it, 5 million internet police or fishery rules and a good bailiff or 3

Judging by some of the comments in this thread, you'd think lake and river banks nationwide were thronged with people doing lines of beak off of bivvy tables, clad head to toe in shell suits. Perhaps try to not fish for mutant Simmos in mud puddles?

My question was more along the lines of why are you posting on here as if everyone else is an idiot
Fish care applies to everyone, innit ? Those who don´t practice safe fish care are idiot, end of.
There are those that honestly don´t a give a dogs breath, about proper fish care and need to be schooled.
For your information, i can bloody well post on any thread i like, and if you feel that you´re been treated like an idiot, then maybe you are. Take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself that same question. The only idiot in question, is the idiot hanging a carp in a tree, for a "prolonged period of time", with the internal organs taking a beating due to the weight distribution, if the carp kicks off, and ends up, in the upright position.
Because as scozza says their organs aren't evolved to take the loads of slings and weighing.
And everyone that is pouring water or on the fish' gills, that's like stamping on your chest while you can't breathe I'd have thought.
Slings and weighing are all part of the sport, so that´s why, if you do intend on using em, then please use them wisely.
Not everyone is pouring water on the fish´gills, are they
Those that are, should be schooled and not scorned, so please explain to those that do, what exactly happens when you pour water directly on the fish´gills
Not everyone knows everything, and you´re never to old to learn. Fish outta water needs to be kept moist ... that´s what she said
Only idiot i see is the lad hanging a 50ty up in the tree, for a prolonged period of time. Heff ... if you feel you´ve been treated like an idiot, then maybe you are one
Loads of folks getting into the sport, that need to be put on the right track, from the get go, and browse these forums looking for answers. Not all have a clue about fish care, so if that post of mine helps just one person, then i´m satisfied. That post is for anyone that doesn´t have a clue, or needs to be reminded about proper fish care. Not everyone knows everything like you do. Come to my lake & hang a 50ty in a tree, and i´ll hang you up by the gonads, and see if you like it

you made a sweeping statement about not handling big fish alone
Sometimes english is hard to understand, if you interpret things wrong.
If one is not used to handling big carp ALONE, then next bet is to seek help from someone else, if possible.
Is that so hard to understand
The lad on the vid, surely isn´t capable, as shown, so according to his scenario, he should get help from someone who practices safe fish care. Why do you get so defensive, when all we´re trying to do is right a wrong
The Heff : Why do you think you shouldnt deal with a big carp, photo weigh etc, on your own?
2nd Chance : Heff ... It´s not about dealing with a "big", alone. Fish care applies to all carp in the lake. If fish care knowledge is lacking, then you should seek assistance, but if you "actually care" about fish safety, then by all means do it yourself, and do it properly.
You asked and got an answer, so what you on about, my precious ? Go roll one and chillout, mate
Oh and for the record, no hard feelings mate, all good banter
luv ya
As for handling big gals, i manage just fine, hanging me ol dutch, in my bedroom sÖx swing, and she copes well, for a prolonged period of time

Or maybe what you wrote, was understood as it was written.. Maybe its not my understanding of it thats the issue, perhaps its the english used thats the problem. And perhaps the wording should be better next time if were going to go down that road.
And the lad on the video clearly had help, but the help is clearly not very good. The statements you made, suggested that no one should do stuff alone, they werent aimed at that scenario, they were generalising that situation.
Im not really sure what you consider was me being defensive, or how you consider being all preachy on here to be righting a wrong.

Lot of editing gone on on some of these posts
Anglers should remember that we all do shocking fish care by hooking fish with a sharp piece of metal in its mouth, then reeling in a distressed animal which is suffering and confused, then lifted onto land where fish can't breathe! Then it is weighed to see how fat it is, as we feed them bait to make them more obese. Then pictures are taken before it is returned back to its watery home! A lot of ego in carp fishing!
