I've just been sitting here browsing YouTube videos and something just triggered me, I've seen it quite a few times now and it really winds me up.
I understand people have to learn & people have different styles but it really winds me up when I see someone playing a fish and their clutch is screaming but they're still standing there turning the handle to gain line back or they're trying to pull the rod back harder as the fish is taking line.
Well that's my rant over.

I guess some people just never learnt to play fish properly. Or they don't understand how to adjust the clutch properly. I'd put it down to ignorance. However people really should learn to play fish well before fishing for carp, or barbel.

I get annoyed by anglers that 'backwind' but actually let go of the handle temporarily on a run etc . . .seems daft and a little out of control to me - play the fish off a tight-ish clutch and adjust with your middle/index finger during the fight as required - simple

No,not unreasonable at all,truthful, yes..
Other posters nail on head..on the reverse of those who know,how about those who know nothing, ie,straight into carping with no essential relevant smaller species apprenticeships..
Equally as bad,is those YouTube shots of rods being unnecessarily dragged into the dirt ,or on the bank with a clutch set far to tight...looks good for YouTube,..but on a snag free lake ,bad angling practice in my humble opinion, and potential damage to a nice rod n reel..

Yes I had omitted that class of numpty.
One on a local lake was complaining about the amount of Goosanders and what were the bailiffs doing about it .

You can spot those if you are nearby. I've even met a couple from forums that I thought were experienced anglers.
They bump a lot of fish off.
They can spod and marker and walk round the far side and bait up etc. And you think, oh they won't be so bad.
Then they get a run. Clutch is always too loose. That can bump as the BR disengages. But not until after they have 'struck' at an
Already hooked fish. No real sense of line tension vs distance etc. Which I think you pick up very quickly when float fishing.

Learnt me trade as it were using Mitchell 300a had no choice but to learn to back wind. As if you loosened the drag to much the spool was liable to pop of..
Never really felt out of control with a fish more the opposite to honest..

I use Mitchell 900's on old glass rods occasionally...principally just to take ze peez when everyone is out showing off their £1000 new set ups ..would never even consider backwinding or churning...modifying Mitchell clutch washers and the caps is so simple.

Backwinding on modern reels unnecessary IMO - clutches so much more adjustable and smooth - subtle adjustments are easy to keep in synch with the fishes movements and reduce bumping etc.
Agree those youtube shots of overtight clutches / tips high and butts on the ground to make it 'obvious' to the viewer that a fish is on annoys the hell out of me - may they all lose their spangly basia set ups to the depths . . .

900 s,not bad Wilberforce...my Mitchell's have had the red washer and ptfe washer replaced,they lovely now,and same as you...use my older kit to do what you say as well..
'Eh mate ,your rods broken',no ...,its a swingtip rod,...'never seen one of them before..'...
(We also got a 440a metal micky upgrade,lol)..
And no ,I don't back wind on Mitchell's, clutch is good ...after some fettling,

That took the grease out the 300s and put oil in to get silly churners spin 4 ever , but the gears wore out 10 times faster

The 900's are probably the pinnacle of the Mitchell egg shaped body reels.
Skirted spools and much stronger bail arm springs than the 300/400 series.
Most of mine came from Canada/USA when they were still available cheaply on Ebay, before the stupid global shipping programme was implemented and before UK Customs and Excise were instructed to intensify raping the pocket's of buyers in an attempt to cover the shortfall of treasury funds due to incompetent government.
I've always wanted tournament spools for them but have never seen any for sale.

One handed is the correct way you noddy, other hand should have a large can of Stella acta**** and big dooby in it if your a pucka seasoned carper.

Did that on Tuesday night, playing a fish at 0100. Luckily, I'd slipped into my 'night footwear' Crocs, so it all just drained away...

I watch a fair few youtube vids and have never noticed this. The only thing I have seen which is a bit annoying (Carl and Alex) is the use of SS2600's with the clutch too tight and the rod almost going in the water. I'm sure they do it on purpose (although I am aware that it's about 46 turns of the clutch from loose to locked on a SS2600
