JAG say... Carrying multiple catapults for different types of baiting is a thing of the past! Saving you space, time and even money! Every JAG One-Pult will come supplied with a Medium (Black) Latex Elastic and Medium Pouch. This pairing makes a great 'all rounder' ...

So, let's do the math...

One catapult with one latex chord and one medium pouch £26.49

Three spare pouches in small, medium or large - that's £8.40 for three of the same size, yes, the same size.

The elastic comes in four ratings at £5.49 a pop.

So, riddle me this - they say buying this system will save you money?

You buy the kit, then you probably would get at least the small and large pouches, possibly all three. Hang on, why don't they offer a mixed pack of three pouches in S/M/L? Hmmm... anyone worked this out yet? OK, now we want the different elastics, probably best to get at least three of those and a spare medium.

Just checking my Shopping Cart now... £73.65 total, Holly Molly!

This has to be the biggest rip off in carp tackle history. Do they really think that people are so stupid that they'll be suckered into this. Unreal. No matter how good or bad this catapult is, the fact remains you could buy two or three really good catapults for half what all this junk will cost - and let's face it, three catties hardly weighs much or is inconvenient to cart around... and having said all this, I was in Johnson Ross yesterday and saw at 3 people buy the whole shebang

each to their own,but one thing I do notice in and around carp fishing is alot of people are more concerned what other people are doing than what they are themselves....if I got 200 sheets left at the end of the month after my kids are fed and clothed,my bills are paid, all house maintenance and car maintenance up to date, who cares what I spend my money on...I tell you who cares...most of the other carpers on the bank care...

Pretty cynical view point, but I get what you're saying - people want all the latest gear, no matter what. But I am cash rich, if that's the right term? I could frankly spend what ever I like on gear, when ever I wanted, but I wouldn't waste my hard earned on a con like this just to impress someone else! You do see it all the time, but I think these people are in the minority when it comes to how successful they are when it comes to catching carp. Noddy see, Noddy do

I assume you use ron Thompson alarms, NGT rods and a hokey kokey bivvy from go outdoors and drive round in a 1997 nissan primera. Or do you sometimes spend a little bit extra just because its nice to have nice things?

Well, you assume wrong and totally miss the point. I've got around ten grands worth of gear, all top end, it's nearly twenty if you count my boat/outboard/sonar/etc. 1997 Nissan? That may be your dream car,. Me? Since you asked? I have a 21 plate Audi RS4 Vorsprung Ed. and a 20 plate Porsche 718 GT4 are sitting on my drive. No mortgage as well, paid that off a couple of years ago. Feeling jealous yet... I could go on... yes, I have plenty of spare cash, but am not stupid enough to fall for the con we are talking about here. But, you fill your boots mate, one botn every minute, as proven by some of the comments now forthcoming

it just seems to happen all the time these days, I haven't got the catapult in question,I do have 3 or 4 other catapults I use, when these eventually break will I replace them with the jag one..possibly and for one reason and one reason only...im sick of catapult elastic twisting all the time when in use,I spend more time untwisting between each use of the catapult...so if the jag one solves just that one thing alone, then I'm in

It's called catapult tax

People will buy them, may be part of the image, waders with yellow straps, trendy catapult around the neck and a Bennie hat whilst enjoying a cocktail in the local nightclub, it's where it's at

You've kinda just blown your own argument there really.

If I had all the money you've got. I wouldn't buy an Audi sports car. I'd actually buy an old knackered beetle and restore it. That would give me way more pleasure than a racing car. I think anyone who spends tens of thousands on cars is a bit mental. But I'd never criticise you for it. A customer of mine bought an F50. He paid well over a million quid for it. I wouldn't. He did. I'm not wrong and neither is he.

But each to their own. You like to spend what you want to on what you think are nice cars. Other people want to spend their spare money on other things that they like. Live and let live.

If you don't want to buy a jag catapult then don't. Given the fact that the first production run has already nearly sold out. Plenty of others disagree with your view point.

As a side note I happen to know a lot of people who work at JAG and I've had the pleasure of spending time away with a lot of them. They are decent people. JAG/UPE has many members of different families all working in the same business. Lots of local employees. Lots of the outsourced stuff is also done by other small uk firms, like the injection moulding, the plating etc. This is a business that last year could have closed its doors and took thousands of pounds in furlough money. Actually instead they repurposed their machines to make ventilator parts and testing kits. Machines that are probably as we speak now still saving lives in other countries. They aren't out to “con” anyone. I think you saying that is a bit strong.

I agree with a lot of what you say, ultimately it is if the end users sees the value in it

Looking from another perspective, I have an ESP pult and have for many years, wouldn't use anything else, does everything I need, fires bait out perfectly and cost around £15 now?

I think the point is, £70 for a catapult for firing bait out, it sets the benchmark and opens the market up for inferior equipment (we know Jag is quality) but watch a lot of others follow suit...£

Not long before we are paying £50 for a plastic piece of ****, that's my concern

The Ferrari of the catapult world

Choices

Edit - had a google, £24? to be fair I like the quick change system, unique design

Suppose if the black elastic is the same as normal black catty elastic that's all you need. On this basis, not too bad, atomic price range, can't remember what I paid for mine? I would say this looks much better. I have a metal atomic one, it lives in the garage

Cor I am a little jealous must be nice having cash to waste on an overpriced vw in both cases, but it certainly helps me sleep at night knowing that although I can't afford them I definitely have better taste.

Anyway it's a nice looking catty, well engineered, I'd imagine it took a bit to design it and a fair few prototypes plus made in the UK.

Well whoop-de-fuggin-doo. I'm all for buying British, the only exception of not having the pee taken out of me in the process. As OP has illustrated, if you buy the whole set, you're just shy of 80 quid, 80 fugging quid for a fugging catapult, let that sink in.

How long do you reckon it takes to make one? Including the design and prototyping phases. Let's say each catapult costs 6 man hours to make, obviously that's not to case but taking in draughting time, tooling costs, failed attempts, overheads, shipping costs, rising material prices etc for the first run it isn't an impossibility. Even at minimum wages that's £50.16

Take into account they need to make some money, retail margins are typically 35% you are looking at £77.17

Let's be honest the factory operators may be on minimum wage but designers, draughtsmen, testers etc won't be on minimum wage.

It's a catapult, that's all it is, it's not some magical device where one wave of it and the fish are hanging themselves on some manky rig you've half heartedly luzzed in the edge with a moldy old chugnut on the end, is it? Oh, wait a minute, my bad, JAG made it so it must have magical powers...like the Powers of Grayskull? Lordy lord.

I think it's been about three years. I saw the big boss about eighteen months ago and he told us he was testing a version of it then and that was far from the start of it. As you rightly pointed out these things don't happen overnight, versions get tested, binned, started again, binned again then tweaked and tweaked and then finally put through their paces. And even then as we saw with the catapult right on the point of distribution they decided there was still another improvement that could be made to the pouches, so they delayed the launch. It's a costly and time consuming excerise, especially when it's not being done in the Far East.

The other consideration is not only that these aren't made for cheap in China, but that also the Jag production runs arent on the scale of say a korda or nash. So economies of scale means that their stuff is never gonna be Chinese tat cheap.

Some people like that kind of thing, others don't, just like every other product out there. I'm happy enough listening to an mp3, but I've got customers who devote whole rooms of their houses just to their hi fi stuff. Which I don't get at all.

Like I said in another post. It's very unlikely anyone is gonna go out and buy every elastic and every pouch. ABS have about twenty baits on their new website. So does that mean that ABS users are gonna buy 5k of every product they sell? It's about choices. There's lots of manufacturers importing stuff from China. Ridgemonkey regularly gets an absolute slating on here for doing it. Jag make their stuff in the UK and also get an absolute slating for doing that. Keith's stuff is handmade in the uk, I don't know his set up but I bet if he decided to up his production to JAG levels then his prices would also need an increase. I guess a lot of people would be slagging him off as well then.

What's the old saying? You can please some people some of the time, as long as they ain't carp anglers.

The bait analogy is terrible, maybe multiple rods would have been better, even still, that doesn't work either none too well.

Economies of scale:

So someone like Chris Brown can knock out two 8" banksticks for £23.50 yet JAG want £27 for one 7" stick, granted, Chris's ones aren't turned out all fancy looking whereas JAG's are, yet I'm sure Chris is selling to a vastly small client in number. Seems to me that the prices JAG are selling their gear for is the aspirational value and from what I've seen, form over function.

More than likely the reason Keith doesn't get slated is because his stuff is function over form to a degree and won't fall to bits and last year's and years, not so I'd have said about JAG's tatt.

I can't comment on Chris Brown as I don't know how he produces his stuff. Does he employ loads of staff and have a state of the art thousands of square ft factory to pay for? Or does he have a little unit with only a couple of people or turn it out on a lathe in a workshop at his home?

Overheads are all relevant. You could make an excellent bait at home for £3.50 a kilo but you ain't walking into a tackle shop and buying sticky krill for that are you?

I will say I've never had any jag stuff “fall apart” in fact my pod I have still looks brand new and I've had it a while now, I will agree the catapult is a bit much but I can see the appeal of it. Jag on a whole knocks out some very good gear and there customer service is brilliant.

Thinking about it, I reckon the JAG catapult may be worth buying on the ease of changing elastics alone, I have had my ESP pult (had a couple) for years, not only lost a couple of the brass elastic connectors when the elastic gives way or being changed but it's a pain in the arse to change elastics and then worrying about whether they are going to slip.

Agree, cannot see why people are getting so bothered about a £25 catapult 😂.. Many of times whilst on a baiting mission I've had my elastics go or pop off, trying to get em back soaked in hemp juice is a royal pain in the ass... And then they just slip off again, if this speeds up the process and makes it easier then it's money well spent in my eyes... ditched a Korda and an esp catty last season due to em keep popping apart mid fling and spunking bait all over myself and watching that green securing ball on the Korda disappear into the undergrowth never to be found again... Leaving me with a bucket of bait and a mile walk back to the car to get another catty... I'm getting one 🤪

That's like comparing apples to oranges.

They're one of the lightest reels around which makes casting at big distances easier. Was having a convo with a guy last week about reels, the guy is well able to cast at 180yds who uses Basia's. When I asked him why, he said it was because it aids his casting with the reels being as light as possible giving him the ability to generate more lead speed. Simple physics.

Back to you daddy-o.

All you really need is a pult for very close in for ranges further than you can overhead lob them and an AirBomb for anything past what the el cheapo catty can't get to. The AirBombs are the nuts for a nice big spread and 15 or so quid well spent.

The only drawback with the AirBomb is if you're pulting out mixers when you've got them going on the top which can be negated if there's a slight breeze whereby you can cast upstream so to speak of them and let the mixers drift over their nuts.

So a £100 spod rod, a £70 spod reel, £15 of braid and a £15 airbomb is better value for baiting up close range than a £25 catapult?

In my opinion NO, in fact I would use the tried and tested ESP one any day, just get some spare elastics which inevitably let you down at some point. I am a big Jag fan but regret buying the so called One Pult kit. I just could not get use to it, bollies going everywhere other than where I wanted them. I even then spent more to make it work and bought the large pouch and orange heavy elastic, which to be fair helped with the bollie baiting but cost another £13 I think. I also find the pouch slips up the elastic so you need to correct that after each chuck. Could be me as others I'm sure are happy. Tip of the day, go in a shop and look before buying anything unless you are sure, something I use to do but then due to the pandemic just keep ordering on line based on the idea/company etc.

I no it's not on the same level and normally I love my jag kit but I had to buy the new Korda catapult last week after my normal one broke while at the lake and no other option than buy one, I am very impressed with it I actually really like it I just hope it lasts

Bringing this back to life, has anyone got one who can tell us what they think of it now they've used it for a while ?
It says it takes all the weak spots out of where the elastic normally frays/goes through, then I see the elastic rubs on 3 metal rings in the pouch, so does the elastic go here, or above where it slots into the frame, or is it super dooper reliable?

A genuinely awful design. Surprised they didn't pull it to save brand reputation.

I had the onepult, its terrible. Its near impossible to be accurate with it. The distance isnt that great.

The only reason i liked it was because of how you can change the elastic but it was useless for the purpose of getting bait out on the spot.

I use a Korda one now for close in work (Stick for mid to long distance) and it does job the fine

Still got my Atomic Black Cat Power Pult - brillant bit of kit . . . .I use clipped cable ties at the frame and pouch connections to stop the elastic moving / slipping over time

Go punch a pebble dashed wall about 20 times have a look at your knuckles after it
They will be about the same state after using the catapult

I've not used the jag 1 but have used many over the years. Currently have a korda one, it's good, up to about 40 yds, I load it with several boilies and grip the pouch to stop the baits falling out, the " finger grip" loop is useless. Unless you want to feed birds and rats on the bank, around your rods.

I've watched this thread with interest as I bought one when they were first released and, as others have said, totally useless and now sitting in my garage with other useless bits of kit. Reason for posting however, is that i just loved this comment... surely this was a clever pun?? Made me laugh anyway Beyonce...
