Difficult question to ask, but did they cause their own demise? Did people just get bored of paying a subby to read about a variation of dissolving pva?
With the amount of free content on Youtube, and the move towards anglers preferring tales of campaigns rather than the 4th version of the chod, is anyone actually surprised? In my opinion we had fifteen years of sometimes toe curling promotion from a salesman, dressed up as a pictorial piece. There were often a dozen "how to" pieces with the occasional diary piece from a journeyman on a runs water. It appears people wanted quantity over quality at the time, which could be down the the massive explosion in carp angling in the earlier 2000's thanks to Korda etc and their ability to get on our screens via TV and DVD.
Roll on 15 years, and some of the best and most viewed pieces on youtube are tales of journeys, warts and all, with well produced videography that inspires. It would be interesting to see the sales figures whenever Terry Hearn writes in Carpology, or Adam Penning, because their writing is the closest you'll get to a lot of the free content they have produced on youtube.
I believe with the increased interest in Podcasts and paid-for videography which has rocketed the last 12 months, I believe the end is nigh for the print media in carp angling.

I would have to agree with you mate. I still get Carpology, but tbh it takes me 2 weeks of bit reading now, as there is so much content on other platforms that inspire me a little more. I still find in interesting and get round to it, but I can fully understand those that don't both anymore.

Can't remember the last time I bought a mag, but i do recall it being full of adverts and biased reviews. I don't think I've ever seen a product have a negative review in a mag.

Makes a lot of sense to me that. I think there is only so much you can print and I also think a lot of them lost the plot. A Carpworld was the last one I bought

I didn't realise sitting in the pissing rain trying to catch a gammy common out of a south london concrete bowl was trendy

Trut me on this one - I have been driving trains for more than twenty years and I have met my fair share of train lovers. The way they get worked up over details will make the bait section on here look like a place of peace and harmony.

You forgot, rallying cars, loud music, smoking dope, leaving litter, spodding the granny art of it, casting into other people's swims and just been a **** in general. I've seen some mongs over the years too
As for the mags, the content killed it for me. Yep. My brother in law has a gaming PC which he dedicates to train simulator and dedicates a lot of his time to modding trains and building digital versions of new trains on the market. People offer him big money to recreate certain trains to use in their game. Mental.

I often wonder where the ‘this is all that's wrong with modern carp fishing' brigade actually fish? With no social media and a very nice ticket that took time and a bit of effort to get hold of I can safely say I never see any of the shenanigans that people on here seem to get so upset about?

Total Carp Mag done a poll a few years ago and it came out at something silly like 90% of participants fished day ticket waters.
That is either a reflection on Total Carp Magazine, or we just don't realise that whilst we are alone on our club ticket ponds, there are hundreds of day tickets rammed to the gills with all echelons of society.

Yes it's very well put together, but it's not a commercial enterprise. It doesn't need to turn a profit and it doesn't need to keep the manufacturers sweet.
How long would a magazine last if it had honest reviews? “We tested xyz products and to be honest with you they are utter dog ****” End of magazine.
I stopped buying them years ago, but if any of you are missing the old content here's a quick piece I've knocked up for for you.
“I arrived at first light and walked the lake, scanning it with my Fortis glasses. It was starting to drizzle so I zipped up my Aqua jacket, slipped on my Vass waders and set off to find the fish. This where my Trakker monocular really comes into its own. I fired up my ridgemonkey stove and kettle to sit back and watch the water from “shelleys” point. After seeing three bubbles I quickly set up my nash spodding station, I emptied a tub of Mainline tigers, 5kg of mainline cell, mainline response pellets and a bottle of mainline liquid into the bucket and using my free spirit spod and spomb spent the next two hours spodding the granny out of it. “
In part two we find out how things worked out for Instant Dave on this session of a lifetime and we hear how he cancelled his wedding cos he was running low on Nash Fangs in a size 4.

Catch Cult is a very impressive magazine and, I believe that every issue still sells out. They are quite niche, intentionally so. Various types of specimen angling covered and, of most importance, the writers are anglers of the very highest caliber, not the usual suspects or sponsored cretins with a handful of fish but bucketfuls of hashtags. It's a great read.

We jest, but for many years people had to be told what was good, they soaked it up like a sponge and they bought/sold stuff until they realised what worked and what didn't. Then came the chinese tat peddled by the mags because they didn't want to bite the hand that feeds them. I think that is why baboon reels, solar stainless etc hold such a high value in the market, because it is quality that lasts for decades. There are products that only came out in the early 2010's that have now dissapeared off the face of the earth due to how piss poor they were.

The last mag I purchased was the Final copy of CW. I'm not sure why tbh ,BUT I thought it deserved to be the last edition after ploughing through it...I came ..I saw..I smashed the backside out of it....AGAIN type articles, not to mention the endless adverts. It really was a shadow of a groundbreaking mag.Admittedly it was the 1st proper mag aimed at us on a monthly basis once it had an established foothold and a growing readership..Unsure if BC ran concurrent?

Once corporate tie ins became common,the reviews were just a repeat of the company blurb, found elsewhere in the same bloody mag in their advert..Talk about a pointless waste of editorial space!
Maybe the above is a reason we find the classified section with so many unwanted/wrong item posts..Readers of the comics, blindly following what the corporate slaves say we need to catch these manky commons from concrete bowls. None of these 'reviewers' are allowed to mention or highlight negative aspects..every item is indispensable and the next best thing.
There's some good lads on here who know their onions and whose advice many would be wise to pay attention to,but like the mags there is a growing population of 'instant' wannabes which is in a way sad because they haven't learnt to appreciate their surroundings,their captures or their quarry perhaps as they should or pick out the dross from the good.

you need to meet requirements to get in though?
i still look about for the older magazines because they are a bit more interesting to read when seeking a little insipration when you can get out.
I think alot of the limited publications will survive (Sub Fallons Angler etc, Sub took a change with less word content and i dont think its as good a the 3 before)

I have not bought a carp magazine for about 7 years, maybe longer, maybe 10 years I used to regularly buy about 4 a month, then eventually cut down to just Carpology, then after going a few years hardly reading them and just instead browsing through them basically and collecting them, and only reading "What's new etc" and reviews etc, and after reading a stupid article by a well known angler (stated that Carp are not bottom feeders amongst other rubbish he wrote), that was enough to tip me over the edge and cancel my subscription from WH Smiths.
And then I gave my collection of carp mags away and binned what I did not as I doubt I would ever read them again and all they do is collect dust.
There is only so much dribble you can read about an anglers write up about how they caught a certain carp that gets repeated every month. Usually the same basic article, different angler, different carps name, different lake, different bait, different rig, different weather, etc. The same old story, just different names.
These days, if I want to take a magazine to read, and its unusual, I'll usually pick up a general knowledge magazine, maybe Astronomy, aircraft or military history etc, far more interesting than repeatedly reading about how to tie a knotless knot or the same old rig that has been on the go years, but reinvented with a different name as if its something new.
Basically what it all boils down to is, if you just put into a money box what you spend on a magazine, you can eventually buy a good book when it is released but as you have normally been squandering your money on magazines, that expensive book is to expensive to buy. Or even buy some new tackle.

There's the flip side to that, companies who pretend they are manufacturers with badges on all their products which in reality they are just salesmen importing Chinese crap. They then sell it to anglers for a vastly overinflated fee. Minimal output, boat in, stock in, stock out with maximum input £. I certainly don't think it's people don't pay good money, quite the opposite for me, top dollar in a lot of cases and limited choice, lots of Chinese crap to choose from amongst a few proper top quality products as I see it?

I believe in telling the truth,even if its unpopular, uncool and could potentially make one look bad..

I plan to not buy much for carping in the future,I have enough,enough is enough,unless something breaks,or genuine improvement in portability etc..
The fish,the environment and ecosystems,those are the real things we should be concerned with...

I've bought Carp mags since the 80's but this month it ends, as I've grown sick also of what you have noted Chris – might as well be looking at the Chinese Alibaba web site.
Past few months I've not read a single page, just flicked through and then used as wrapping paper for orders.

I just got home from work and my Mrs threw a carp ology mag still in cellophane "will you read this soon or I'm gonna bin it"

Made me chuckle a lot, you missed possibly the funniest part of the standard "edge" spod mix which i think is the cherry on the top you didnt specify that the mainliine liquid is called a "smart" liquid. But you hit the mail on the head. I really love fishing, especially carp fishing but social media has certainly changed the game.

that is absolutely spot on
i cannot abide reading that type of tale , which unfortunately is prevalent in almost all the mags. won't buy them any more , utter crap ! non stop and needless product placement and i get that its sales led .
personally i love a deeply technical article, but they are few and far between

I think it could be me just getting old and grumpy but I can't abide the terminology used in the magazines and also on social media

Am in the early process of moving house and was up in the loft at the weekend and was going through old boxes of mags, have Carp Catcher, Carp Fisher, Carpworld, Hutchies bait one, BC, etc from issues #1 some of them, might be worth selling them..

In the early 90'ies i used to take the train to amsterdam, to get a copy of carpworld in the british bookstore. All excited about the magazine, and the rest of course.
Later we've got 3 carp magazines in holland, that went from not bad at all to horrible in no time. I've just read about the carpy language that gets on people's nerve, but it can not be as bad as dutch carpy phrases. I give to you, BAKKEN en BOLLEN. I've caught a bak (big fish) on this bol (boilie). BAKKUH OP DIE BOLLUH!!! Omg, just shoot me, you've caught a nice fish on a round bait boy, not a bak on a bol.
I don't know if there are any dutch carp magazines left, that says it all i guess. But it's the same with all forms of journalism, they are not independent thinkers on any subject anymore, just serving interests, beit political or commercial. Not much future for them i say.
