I have had rather large perch and a couple of pike on pineapple and banana popups. This might be mostly due to the visual aspect thou.
And I have had plenty of trout on krill boilies.
The eels seem to like everything slightly fishy.
Reading Archie Braddocks books he mentions catching a lot of perch on "curry flavour".
The soft baits for perch etc is often flavoured with garlic or anise.
What is everybodys experience with flavours/additives on the catch rate of predators?

Had a fair few pike on white pop ups. They were a pest when I used scent from hell.

Could possibly be water dependant for me too. I know of couple of waters around me where the pike will regularly pick up boiled baits to the point they are a compete pain in the arse. I used Trigga ice on one water and one season I caught more pike than carp and that includes them picking it up off the bottom or grabbing it on the way in, personally I don't like them. Like all fish they are inquisitive for me.
Looking back I have caught most species on boilies over the years, can't recall ever having a Rudd and I have never had a Perch
Just got myself a ticket for a canal for the winter, carp to 25lb, possibly bigger, massive chub and barbel, bailiff and his mate have just removed over 30 jacks in two weeks spinning to another water on their club. Hopefully no pike for me but I'll settle for the others when it drops off
Regarding Archie Bradocks, magical stuff, used to use it in the 80s. Can't remember which blend it was but it specified crucians, on a water where I had never caught a crucian previously, yep, I had one around 2lb
He was deffo king of the spices, I think they were re-released a few years ago by Quest baits? Could be wrong?

I've had a few pike take baits when using bright pop ups - especially when reeling into margin on a recast.
Think its the visual aspect and the movement triggers a response

You are right, they was rre-eleased by Quest Baits, and recently (2018?) he joined as a consultant for Dynamite.
His findings are very interesting.

I had an interesting one, I baited a spot I could watch from up a tree, with homemade groundbait it was very heavy on the fishmeal around 80%.
I kept an eye on it, and to my amazement watched a pike eating it 😝.

2 years ago in France the Pike took a particular liking to my white Tutti pop ups!. The father in law had issues with them hammering him on Spam on a particular water too.
Got a bit of a habit of catching pike where ever I go. Generally have them on pop ups but the strangest was pva bags of pellets on Yately Pads lake at 2 in the morning. Also had big perch on luncheon many moons ago.

Had a google after reading your post
It is quest baits. The original stuff came in a white tub and was stored in a white plastic bag inside it to keep it fresh. The new stuff looks to be in pop up tubs. Never knew he was still about in the bait game with the greatest of respect. TBH been off my radar for a long time, I notice he has two books out as well, might be right up your street been a bait buff

I've had double figure pike from the local park lake on a Pineapple N-butyric boilie and from Brackens at Nazeing on snowman baits.
I've also landed a pike from the river on a freelined slug.
I've never landed perch or dace on boilies, but had chub, bream, tench, and roach.

You'd have to be using a pretty small boilie to catch a Dace......
Never had a gudgeon, millers thumb, stickleback or minnow either 😂

I've had a pike with two 24 fishmeal boilies picked up on the bottom at around 35 feet down the last December and also a couple of black bass both on an homemade pop-up banana flavoured, from the same lake in the space of few weeks.
Also, not properly predators I had chub, tench, crucian, rudd and bream

Thought you might
Love the title, the first 70 years
Is there anything specific to carp related spices or blends?

Haven't fished for predators for years, personal bests are all taken on boiled baits:
Catfish 30lb+ sticky krill wafter
Pike 23lb+ sticky krill pop up
Perch 3lb+ northern special wafter
Both catfish and perch were taken using solid pva bags where perhaps small fish were attacking the pellets?
Michael

Tactic of many a decent matchmen fishing bread punch for small roach in winter, bites drop off, change to half a worm, big perch!

He seem to think carp is the most uncritical of species, and most of his mixes will attract carp.
On his campaign for Trent carp he uses nearly everything from cheese to chocolate malt.
He is very clear on different spices and different flavors work best in specific locations and under certain conditions so you will need to find what works best where and when you fish. Something that catch roach on the Trent in summer might work better for chub in another location. If you should generalize he says sweet stuff in summer and spicy stuff in winter.
What made me start this thread in the first place was Braddocks writings on perch and pike which I find interesting. It made me do some testing with flavors and spices in my sea fishing and after many many hours I found that some stuff seem to work pretty well. While I have not found a single substance to work particularly good it seems blends can make a change.

Interesting about the blends, also the sweet and spice, done that myself over the years
Archie Braddock is a bit of a legend, a lifetime of tinkering with spices, brilliant
I wouldn't mind a hour discussing them with him
Saying that, reading some of this I would assume Perch prefer spicy stuff, but a northern special is a bit different lol

Legend indeed, and a bit under the radar it seem.
A lot of the fish caught on bright popups is probably due to the visual aspects. All my pike and perch have fallen to that. Catfish seem to learn to pick up pellets etc pretty quick, same with trout.
Braddock made or make spicy additives targeting perch but I guess there can be stuff in it that don't shine through to the human nose.

I've caught plenty of nuisance pike and eels on fishmeal baits. Not hi vis but mainly at night so presumably on smell.. Plenty of bream and tench on same baits. I did have a spell of catching large roach on high protein milk based baits which were very sweet and pineapple flavoured but coloured red like strawberries.

There's one thing that is pretty amazing for me, same as the crucian thing for me and I know others who used it and did the same, a spice blend targets specific species, there's some effort and thinking gone into that
Probably the first 70 years

Having watched what happens after baiting with my particle seed mix, the small Roach come in and then are pushed out by the bigger Roach and not long after the Pike turn up and start striking across the spots.
Pre-bait for Pike would be one of my methods!

It is pretty amazing that you to some degree can cherry pick species by selecting the correct ingredients.
MARKerz:
Groundbaiting for pike is a great trick. Always had a pike rod ready when I fished for rudd. When the swim got quiet a deadbait usually gave results.
