I've sold on Marketplace no problem. You get the usuall timewasters and messes. Use a bit of common sense with your transactions and you'll be fine. Me I personally don't have anyone come round my place to collect. I always arrange somewhere convenient for both party's. Posting always done with PayPal your covered then. If payment methods look a bit sus. Avoid as they generally are.

I don't even offer postage on Marketplace, just do buyer collects from my house and usually manage to sell things to someone local-ish. And Cash on Collection.

I wasn't aware you can post on Marketplace.
I've only listed a couple of things for local pickup but have never seen an option to say you are willing to post.
Does that option exist? If it doesn't I can't see how you and the buyer are protected

I think its purely down to trust and honour
amongst buyer and seller if posting.... same as Gumtree. Make your checks and take a chance.
It is un-nerving though. I did buy some reels from Marketplace where the guy agreed to post, we did have a few messages though just to get settled and it was all legit. Risky though!
We sell some bits on marketplace here and there, mainly household furniture stuff that would only ever be collection only - I can't remember the last time we didn't have 2 - 3 "will you post" requests from hugely suspect accounts or messages accusing of marketplace copyright infringement accusations along with "click this link to prevent account closure instructions"

I've put tackle on the clubs notice board or on there own Facebook page in the past if Ebay isn't an option for you (I've never had a problem selling on Ebay though)

12.8% commission though and they get a cut from postage costs so rods get pricey, they also charge buyer protection and hold your funds for a short time (think interest). But yes, reasonably secure.
The amount of chancers I saw on marketplace when I was on Farcebook put me right off.

Ebay don't charge you anything now as a private seller.If there is a local tackle selling page on FB set up as a private group use that as most chancers get weeded out very quickly.

I normally put in the description " will post at cost " wait for the money to hit your account. Post out with proof of postage. Normally take a pic of receipt and send to buyer. As mentioned I do it through PayPal. Just got to have your wits about you. I've had people come back and say I haven't got PayPal. Can I pay via this and that. No.. if you've got an email.address you can set up a PayPal account. Luckily most of my transactions have been pretty straight forward touch wood.

I thought for private sellers it was free to sell on ebay nowadays?
Like you say though there is now buyers protection fee. I thought that's how they ebay makes money.
I've not sold on ebay for a while now.
What puts me off is if the postage tracking doesn't work which often happens with Royal Mail, will you still get paid? It's an opportunity for the buyer to claim he never received anything.
Also what happens if you use a courier leaves and they leave it outside the buyers door and it gets nicked, or the buyer claims it wasn't there when he got home?

Facebook Marketplace is fine - just do all your due diligence as outlined on this thread.
Most FBM sales are local(ish) so you can ask for collection (never at your home address) or pref deliver to them so you know where they're going to . . . always price slightly higher than what you actually want for them as you will ALWAYS be offered less - most items sell pretty quick but if they dont you know you've probably priced too high . . .

If I was buying and someone said I'll meet you in a car park or something I'd be suspicious.
I'd ask myself am I buying stolen goods or is someone going to jump me.
There's also the chance the buyer doesn't show up, better to be let down and be getting on with something else at home than wasting your time elsewhere.
I can't see the problem with pick up at home, just don't show off the rest of your gear and tell the buyer you've given fishing up and what your selling is all you have left.

Disagree - I always meet in the local Tesco carpark down the road (2mins away) as I have no desire for any random to know where I live . . . tbf 99% of anglers are genuine, but it only takes one with a brain and light fingers to know that you're likely to have more gear at your home address (whether you bs them or not) - and on this 1% basis I'd rather meet them elsewhere and on my own terms; not theirs - if you value your gear why make it easy?
The risk of stolen goods is always an issue on all 2nd hand items; whether buying or selling - I know I'm genuine and that everything I sell is; if others have issue based on meeting remotely / in the middle after effective comms then that's their problem and if it puts them off the sale then so be it! Similarly how does delivering to a buyer make the assumed risk of stolen goods any less likely - both are much less risk than posting after payment (even if its been insured) when you think about it . . .each to their own

Along with the forum, I've only used eBay and have done for more years than I care to remember.
Recently they changed it to no charges for sellers and you don't get your money until the item has been delivered or collected.
So no more waiting for 80% seller fees discounts but you don't get your money immediately, seems fair enough in today's world.
I've met people at my house, local car parks and countless other weird establishments and never had a drama.
I've found I tend to get a better sell price on there and have some recourse via eBay or PayPal if necessary.

Don't blame you for not using ebay.... I recently sold some gear on there for the first time in a few years and was messed about by several buyers.
Items were collection only and first guy bidded after messaging me where i lived (Manchester) and he was based in Cambridge, h then preceded to win the big and ask me to send. I said no and he cancelled the auction and ebay wouldn't let be do anything or give him negative feedback.
Relisted again - same issue with someone in Scotland.
Third time around some one won it and to be fair he was a solid chap who was a proper angler, so was a good ending but honestly not worth the hassle

Always request the signature option, normally adds 50p to the cost.
I've used parcel force directly for quite a while as well now. No more parcel2go or the other aggregator, they really are a pita if you need to contact them.
Parcel forces prices are fair, they collect from your door and bring the label so you don't need to print anything, they don't dump on the doorstep of the recipient and will insure into thousands.

Understand the sentiment - but unless your a really poor judge of character this is v unlikely; and meeting in 'public' place there is far less likelihood of any dramas!
I've only ever walked away from one 'meeting' when I was actually buying a rare Aqua 'super extended' wrap for my dillo many years ago. It was advertised as VGC but on closer inspection was f**ked - lots of peeling / the inner fabric perishing etc. When I said I wasn't interested the bloke got the total arse (and he was with his mate); I always leave my cash in the car so told them I was going to get it - then simply drove off . . . . muppets!
