Morning all
I started using Trent Baits Freshwater Shrimp towards the end of the summer and really liked them.
In the spring I'll be fishing a new water that has clear water, lots of weed and lots of naturals. In theory sounds good for the Shrimp but I've been told the bird life really hammer the baits and that you need to use a darker bait.
I was contemplating soaking what I've got left of the Shrimp in some GLM or something to darken it up.
When they run out I was thinking of giving the Liver Specials a go as they look nice and dark. They have blood meal in which I'm imagining will stay in the bait a bit better than other boilies with synthetic dies?
Does anyone have any thoughts on the above or any feedback having used the Liver Specials?
Cheers
Christian

You could give them a call to see if they'll do a batch a bit darker for you. As my mother used to say, you don't get anything if you don't ask.
I bet a lot of people have the same problem, they want to use that particular bait as it is highly rated by a lot of people, but it's a lot of money to spend to feed the ducks!!

If the water is that clear the colour difference between shrimp and the liver will make no difference to bird life

Agree. Even black baits go a pale grey after 20 minutes in the deck. To the OP, I'd stick with the 🦐.

I was using essential black snail on a clear water with lots of weed and lots of birds.
Black snail is a very black bait, but to be honest - the birds found it just as they did pretty much any other bait.
Sometimes it's easier to feed the birds off by just feeding them until they bugger off and go to sleep...

I'm sure tufties taste the water as they are swimming around, if your bait is decent they will find it.

anyone else remember Tails Up, protavit liver?
they were [one of ] the hot tickets back in the day, I had some very successful sessions using them.
I still favour liver as a choice ingredient today.

A very basic bait, very few ingredients, but it worked.

Hi Nick do you have a fairly accurate idea of the ingredients of the old Protivit Liver? I'd be interested if you do.

Liver Powder, Calcium Caseinate, Maize Meal, Semolina, some liquid liver.
I'll double check with a mate who worked there rolling bait, but I'm positive that's it.

Thanks all, food for thought.
I think the birds are mainly swans and coots, didn't see any tufties. In my limited experience I have found the coots a little bit less accurate than the tufties although no less persistent. Haven't fished anywhere with 30odd swans and shallow water before though.
I might get a little trial pack of Trent Baits various boilies and test each one in a glass of water out of curiosity.
Take the points that it may make no difference though.
If I remember then I will update this in 6months time once I've done a bit.

Now that's a recipe. Maybe a bit too limited, even to me, but that's all that is needed to catch for years. Always liked their slogan, tails up, heads down, i don't think a posh advertising agency would have come up with anything better.

You'd love my lake, around 100 swans, thousands of coots, tufties and mallards and occasional seagulls that will pick up your bait.
Soaking your baits in Liquid Kelp and Liquid Yeast darkens the bait better, I think, than GLM.
