I have searched on here but can't find any reference
to this, their FB page says it has big discounts, I would
rather have them in business, another bloody good shop gone.

If you didn't get there you don't know what you
have missed, my other tackle shop (much smaller)
is in Ottery St Mary, Otter Angling,Mark is very
helpful, I would think once EA has gone OA will be a bit busier.

I just googled fishing tackle shops Exeter and its top of the list.

Phoned them this morning, all chairs
are gone, last day of trading 31st May.
I asked if another shop will open, on
the outskirts maybe but not in town.
I guess FB might have the answer in the future.

I remember you talking about them, went there today, I've
never seen the walls before, normally jammed packed with stock,
the reel section had about 100 + on show, now just a handful,
upstairs had several bivvies and brollies, bed chairs, holdalls, tackle bags etc, now
nothing, it's forcing us into online buying even more unless you want to
do the miles.

I still use my Solar stainless ,sold to me ,via Hiram,..was a special memory as I caught the bus to Exeter, went all round the villages,got me stuff came ,home, mother in law waiting for me with a thin crimp,parsley pasty..

Can't buy memories like that can you...

Not surprised to hear about Exeter angling.
Last time I went in was around 8 months ago, the shop was empty of customers. None of the staff acknowledged me as I walked in and looked about the shop, too busy playing with their phones.

Why would I spend my money in their shop??

Back in the day it was the best shop for miles around.
Two floors chock full of the latest gear and there was an expert angler for every branch of the sport working there, they were very much like the Tackle Box, a bit more expensive but a very good service.

The location was shocking though, nowhere to park apart from the overpriced pay and display along side.
Forward thinking owners would of moved a long time ago, plenty of options on the trading estates in the city.

The place made a living off the match scene alone in the 80s, 100 peggers on the canal/river back then, big local match scene.

Geoff Salisbury, National Angling Champion that's the heritage of the shop,...forgot to add,. Carbotec and Normark rod designer and product tester (...OK riddler)...lol

My mate ,says passed away in first lockdown..so,I remember him in the angling press ,doing big matches on the Exeter canal,against the Harrels and Ashursts..

Sad times !

I purchased a set of 3 Normark rods that were endorsed by Richie MacDonald back in the day for my first adventures on a big syndicate lake ( All 47 Acres of it which, was the biggest I had tackled at the time ), Chard Ressy.

It was a fantastic shop and the people had a wealth of knowledge and were very helpful.

I always popped in if I was in the City.

Then you will understand my reticence in its use for someone you so obviously held in such high esteem
For their highly creative input in the development of the product
I know your love of all things traditional So I expect you may well be surprised at what Influencers are today

Bought my first bag of Richworth boilies from there, caught my first carp on them, Strawberry cream 😋

We got terrific support from EAC (Hiram in particular) when the missus and I ran the D&C Region of the Carp Society. It's a crying shame to hear that they are closing down.

You know, never been there but it's same across the country sadly, a little part of your history gone, but great memories, you will never forget the character of the shops and the characters that worked of frequented them! all part of our growing up and progression throughout our angling lives

Nowadays it's like going to a Christmas market, see half a dozen stalls and you have seen it all

Part of the blame has to go to the anglers. Judging by many of the posts on here order of importance is..

1. Cheapest possible price for both item and postage. Hopefully I can use a discount code to get it even cheaper and sneak a bit more margin out of the shops profit.

2. Will it be bought to my door within 24 hours. If not I'll be appalled by the courier service even though it didn't cost me a penny.

3. Can I send it back for nothing when I realise it's not what I want or I'm too fat for it. I couldn't be a***d to leave the house and travel for 30 mins each way to see it in a shop and speak to a human about it, but that's not my problem.

I work hard for my money, why should I spend my money on fuel to travel 30 mins each way to pay more for a product? Its sad shops are closing, but it's not my job to subsidise other peoples out of date business practices.

It's not necessarily a case of being out of date. It's no different than buying a pint at spoons or a local pub? The local pub is likely to pay for a pint the same amount spoons sell it for. It will be the same with these big fishing tackle shops, they can't buy it for the same price so have to sell it for more, and if they provide a postal service that will need covering as well

I get that, but it's somewhat different, a pint of Guinness in a spoons might be cheaper, but it's absolutely inferior to a pint of guiness in a pub that knows how to serve it/doesn't buy it out of date. It's a completely different product. A tackle shop is selling the exact same item.

I really am sad to see tackle shops close down, but they have had 20 years to prepare for the Internet. I believe certain tackle manufacturers have been squeezing their margins and dictating what shops can and can't sell too. I think its rediculous ro be blaming us, the customer for their demise.

Truthfully, after speaking to a few of my local tackle shops lately, I think it's a huge culmination of things that has turned it in to a s**t show.

The mass amounts of COVID anglers that are now back at work and selling their gear means the second hand market is saturated. Increased energy costs and also extra day to day costs meaning they really need to take more from the business than they were before, even though less is coming in.

Along with, as you say, a reluctance to move on, I don't understand the reluctance of some local stores to offer postal service etc etc.

However, I do believe the emergence of the big stores has quickened the downfall as they will be buying the product cheaper and able to sell it cheaper, just making it harder for the local shops to compete

I don't think exeter angling had any bricks and mortar competition. In fact I'm not sure of a big chain tackle shop in the whole south west. I think the competition is purely Internet shopping. I'll admit I have used Internet shopping for years, it's just so much more convenient. I can literally order it when I'm on the bank and thinking about it, and it will be at home when I get back. I mostly use ebay.......and when you look at the user name...its often a small tackle shop somewhere.
Business is ruthless, I still do use tackle shops time to time. But its rarely for any convenience, it's usually because it makes me feel like I'm helping out a local business.

Its convivence and part of modern times, i can guarantee the tackle shop sells more in internet sales then they do through the door and if they don't have a website/ebay page there destine to fail.

All these posts pretty much saying the same thing, and with the same correct analogies of Wetherspoons, buy short date beer, sell it cheap. Add to that, again as pointed out larger shops or chains, get bigger discounts.

Electricity prices are stupidly high, and why?
I believe I said a few years ago that wind power was going to cost, every individual wind turbine has a terminal to the cables, compared to a nuclear or gas power station having one terminal for 3 turbines. Wind power has been providing around 35-40% of our electricity recently, pretty similar to gas.

We are paying back for the building of wind turbines, we are paying for the 'failed' energy companies who have disappeared, the bigger companies were subsidising them, and had insured themselves.

It is sad when any tackle shop closes, so many reasons, retirement, excessively high rates and rents, lack of support.

Record profits ... to go with huge government subsidies and tax relief for supposed green commitments. And ministers who are so far in the pockets of these companies they won't change a thing.

With regards to the OP - we're all as much part of the problem at times. Look at the number of posts saying how we buy bait direct from the supplier in large quantities, or the bargains thread and gerry's well meaning linky poos. I treated myself to a new beachcaster recently - bought over the Internet. And I'll be gutted if my local tackle shop closes too... because as much as I can get in there to support them, I'm swimming against the tide. (Pun intended)

I used to travel by bus from Nth Cornwall ,especially to visit Exeter Angling, it was a proper day out ...it was my only tackle shop at one point ,so to get there is 129 mile round trip ..really looked forward to it..

Sadly...tackle shops days are numbered ..,along with potentially the ability to even travel.to one I'm hearing as plans afoot to reduce travel in Cornwall are being drawn up ,or done n dusted ,...we shall see..

Its a urban myth that Weatherspoon's buy short dated beer, like with any business they buy in bulk and have a sell in big quantities giving them a better price, unlike the local working mans club which pay full RRP per barrel every 2 weeks from the brewery.

In my town we have a spoons opposite an old school pub. At one point the Guiness
Was about a quid cheaper. My brother wanted to go there. It was awful both times
After a couple we go to the proper pub. After that I offered to,just give him the difference lol

Gas ratio for pouring
How far away and what temp the keg is stored at

Take a look at your high street - it's not just fishing shops. Internet shopping is the biggest factor.

It's not a myth Mate, I worked in hospitality for years, and have mates who worked for Wetherspoons.

Yes they buy in bulk, and I agree that a smaller pub will buy less, but say at Ufford Park where I was doing the stock orders, I'd be buying 4 or 5 barrels of Stella, Becks, and maybe 1 or 2 Guinness a week.

Line cleaning was properly done, I know because I'd check it, and the distance of the lines shouldn't make any difference, as long as the 'line' ullage is pulled through at the start of the day.
The gas can't change unless the bottle is low.

I think a lot of this is down to the failure of shop owners to adapt. I have 5 tackle shops within 5 miles of me, 2 big chains and 3 independents.

I spend a lot of money on specialist tackle for overseas trips and also have a significant input in what our customers buy, with lures up to £50 easily this soon mounts up as you'd imagine.

I have explained this to the 3 independents and none of them are even willing to look at the trade catalogues available to them and supply me. This isn't an issue with volumes as I'm talking about bulk orders.

I can't think of any other business where the offer of circa £20k of business a year is dismissed or rejected so easily.

Agree with a lot of that. I suppose sheep conditioned to think they need every gadget that comes out and people that want the best price to fit their pocket and the internet has helped with this no end.

What was, no longer is sadly, and over the last 15 or 20 years the pastime has accelerated beyond belief, shops going, magazines becoming a thing of the past, it's all online but more importantly it's all out there, no mystery anymore and most of the people calling the shots are instants seeking fame or companies pushing the hard sell. Thank god I don't get heavily involved with the online stuff other than on here. For me it all went wrong when somebody thought, I can make some money out of this...

We're paying so much for electricity because part of it is produced using gas, and the way it works is that if 95% of a gigawatt of electricity is produced via renewables and the other 5% via gas, the entire megawatt is charged at the most expensive rate (gas). Renewables are much cheaper. That's the rip off.

I just looked, and it's worse than that Mate, 2% is currently being supplied by coal.
UK is not the worst either, Germany has around 40% produced by brown coal. They shut down most of their cheap nuclear stations.
