Hi Sorry for being very quiet on the page, we had issues over the winter period drying baits in our current unit. This prevented us working effectively, other than in limited quantities, also there was a supply issue on quality cork balls. The situation led to us handing in the notice on unit and me going back into my previous area of work.
My new job involved an intensive training period at US time, this and the fact I was locked out the Facebook page for a period of weeks when I changed phones has prevented me from replying to messages. Sorry again.
From the end of this month going forward, we will be selling the standard stock items, I'll be rolling fresh stock and adding to the website in the first week of March.
No more custom orders for time being unfortunately.
Thanks for your patience and sorry for the lack of correspondence. I'll be going through messages and answering queries over the next week.

Shame that is, the hookbait market is getting quite congested now, UB were around when it was still just a few now I can name more hookbait companies than bait companies, all selling 12 quid pots of hookbaits at a much more attractive mark up than boilies, from what it seemed, they were doing it properly, atleast a couple remain which do

Exactly that for me too, another carp angling rip off. Why would you want to make a food source when you can flog 50 baits for more than a KG of decent bait!
I can see home rolling making a comeback soon but even that is subjected to a heavy premium of carp tax in a lot of cases

To be fair there is also a substantial amount more investment in machinery to produce feed baits in any decent volumes.
I cocked up big time a few years back when I thought I'd never be making bait again so I sold off my tables, compressor, gun, burco, mixing gear etc etc. So it's a lot easier to just make hookbaits with a battery gun and shillam tables.
But yes I completely agree. Considering what's probably in a lot of pop ups, basically feck all, the mark up for some companies must be huge. At least some out there are producing them with decent additives and food products included. But not many.

Fifty hook baits for £12 @ 24p a hook bait, if a quarter of the fifty hook baits help put a result on the bank I'd consider that a bargain, especially when I haven't used my time to roll them.
I try not to comment on things like this...But this subject is something I find very insulting to me personally. Carp anglers are being ripped off wholesale. When SHB first started, I was told we would never get £13 for a tub of pop ups. At the time the most expensive table rolled standard pop up mix pop ups were £4-£5. We were trying to come to market with a completely food based pop up, that HAD to be rolled individually in the palm. Not on a table, BUT INDIVIDUALLY IN THE PALM. There is a VAST difference. Forget materials used, there is a vast difference in what can be produced time wise. Despite what folks said we were able to charge that amount, because it involved a totally different type of quality. There were three hook bait companies. Us, UB Baits & PJPU's.
Fast forwards to now. As already mentioned there are now more hook bait companies than bait firms! Most are selling the same crap table rolled pop ups as back then, but are using our price guides to sell them! Instead of £5 now... They charge £12, off of our backs! In the same decade, ours have gone from £13 to £16 being the most expensive. You do the maths!
I feel a little bad in some ways, because these companies are using our price structures, to sell a vastly inferior product, with a monstrous mark up! And I do feel slightly guilty personally for that, because all these firms looked at us... And thought “we can get that money for something that costs us buttons to make”.
It's not just me who thinks this... Major players in the industry have told me exactly the same thing.

If you knew the mark up that people make at those prices, and the lack of labour costs compared to feed bait, you'd feel robbed lol.
The only hookbaits I've seen that genuinely make a difference to catch rates are some proper food ones that are truly hand made and labour intensive. and as they fill a gap in the market without competition they don't need to price competitively so that pricing makes sense.
However I could name you twenty hookbait companys with twenty washed out pink pop ups, why should any of them be over a tenner?
I've seen companies state that they add proper food signal items like GLM, squid addarome, liver etc but these ingredients if added in meaningful amounts mean you'll never get a nice pastel coloured pure smooth bait.
Plus, when you speak about your time, every single person I know who knocks up there few pots of hook baits for the year absolutely loves doing so, its almost ritualistic and its certainly not some intensive task.

Matt himself said in the old UB thread that rolling air ball pop ups is a licence to print money, even at £6 a pot. Cork balls and hand rolled are a completely different thing. I don't care what anyone says, if a hookbait has to pop up a size 4 hook for days on end without cork you can't get enough good stuff in a 13mm table or machine rolled ball to warrant anywhere near £12 a pot.

He was right! They cost literally ‘pence' to make. Air ball type pop ups were the biggest money spinners for every bait firm at £5-£6 a tub by a LONGGGG WAY. At £12 a tub and more it's literally absolute daylight robbery.
10 air balls can be rolled on a table in the same time as 1 of our palm rolled hook baits. Forget that our ingredients cost VASTLY more being real high grade food... Just on Labour ours should be worth 10 x more right? So we should be selling our hook baits for £120 - £150 a tub?? Of course not that's absolutely stupid. Just as it's absolutely stupid for anglers to be paying £12-£15 a tub for poxy air ball type pop ups.
As you say, you CANNOT get any amount of real food into a 12mm air ball. If you could PJPU's which have incredible buoyancy would have been doing it donkeys years ago. It's impossible and anyone who tells you different is just telling you lies to sell some product. The mix itself has the buoyancy, trying to add real food in any tangible quantities to that equation is not possible.
It's like a car salesman showing you a Ferrari & a Skoda. And trying to convince you that the Skoda is worth as much as the Ferrari. Anyone would just laugh. Unfortunately for the uninformed carp angler that's simply not the case.

Not trying to start an argument but:
Cork has a density of 0.240 grams per cubic cm.
K1 3M glass spheres has a density of 0.125 grams per cubic cm
Other fillers that can be used is under 0.050 grams per cubic cm
Mathematics tell me you can get more food to float with a lighter product, if you can get it to bind.

A 12mm finished cork ball pop up is rolled with a 10mm cork ball with 2mm of paste around the outside... Roughly 50% cork to 50% paste. Slightly more cork in fact in reality. Many different grades of cork with different buoyancy's. The best stuff is £250 for 5000. The worst far far cheaper.
Try getting anywhere near those same equations of K1 3M glass spheres into a hook bait equivalent to the cork 😂
If you knew what you were talking about Viking, you would know it's completely impossible to get that glass to bind. There is only a certain amount of glass that can be used for that exact reason 😂 The glass is added to an already buoyant mix to aid buoyancy. Because there's a limit to how much can physically be used.
Don't try and turn this into something between me and you.

It's that magic layer on top of the cork ball that makes all the difference though, the attractive shell if you like. Glass, binders etc just don't do it for me....might as well be fishing with a ball of glue.

Come on lads let's not devolve this into another argument as I say Joss has toothache!
With some of the modern stuff you can get a small amount of proper food into an air all pop up however, these mixes have more binders than tge skin of a cornball pop up, which has a water contact surface of pure food bait.
However because it's 2mm thick it's a case of it will wash out quicker.
I don't even like massively buoyant baits myself, I've made a 14mm hookbait hold up multiple 1/0 sea fishing hooks but then literally the only application for it was a chod where I needed it to ride up a long leader.
I think a Ronnie with a 12mm hookbait looks daft and crude and unecessary, I prefer a less buoyant bait with more substance to it personally, preferably over a bed of nice high quality boilies.
There will be counter arguments such as the food value of a hookbait not mattering because it's not injested, or that a lot of modern investigative trigger ingredients don't effect colour etc.
Ultimately what I'm saying is you can't put enough of them in a bright hookbait and maintain the colour or ultra buoyancy, and they selling easy to roll hookbaits at 12/13 quid a time in tiny pots is at best morally speculative.
I have no problem with people selling them for what they are at a fair price. Loads of good options under a tenner.

As I said, not trying to start an argument.
It is very well possible to us glass spheres to make a very buoyant bait, if you think a bit outside the box and don't roll them on a table.
If you use other buoyancy aids it can even be rolled on tables as you need just need 20% of the volume of cork to get the same buoyancy.

You assume so many things laughing emoji what's that about?
I know full well what a tub of popups cost to produce I know how much my hourly rate is my point is as follows, I was making my own hookbaits 20 plus years ago had another spell during the lockdowns through extra time on my hands when we couldn't fish what I reminded myself is I prefer to spend my time fishing I can't be arsed anymore if someone makes hookbaits at 12 pound a tub or 24p a hookbait for fifty and I'm getting a return by fish on the bank do you honestly think I'm bothered paying someone for their time to make them and sell them I've got 4 tubs of Marks popups and half a dozen of Gavs because they put fish on the bank, I also know pidge well enough to know he's been around as long as God at this game.
By the way I charge 45 quid an hour for my time and have made a living out of my family business employing 15 people for thirty years I understand the cost of things I'm not some pot noodle, I think you come across awfully bitter with some of your responses, don't assume to much about someone an assumption is someone's best guess which is just that.

I've just read through this thread and I can't see anyone being rude about your baits.? In fact all I can see is people calling out companies who are selling basic pop up mixes for £12 a pot. Yours, Specialised and another company I'm very familiar with are clearly not just Polaris and a flavour. I can't see anywhere that people are saying you are turning people over. In fact just the metal tins you use justify a higher price than a lot of others.

Again, you're and gav are the only ones mentioning him here.
You may very well charge 45 quid an hour but nobody in the bait trade charges tge at and it's hardly relevant as I was talking about it being a leisure activity to self roll.
Even at 45 quid an hour if you roll 3/5kg of perfect pop ups an hour you're looking at 200 quid minimum in sales from each kilo so if in 600 quid of business 45 of it was labour it's still be sweet.
I honestly don't have any bitterness to gav we sell different products to different people lol. And I'll not say anymore of it as I agreed not to to someone I respect.
Typical though you lot come in and turn it to me doing something bad for having an opinion lol have a day off.

I have no problem with opinions Mozzi but you started your reply to me with laughing emojis and a comment if you knew just how much a tub of pop ups were to make, Like I said your making assumptions about what I know, people selling hookbaits for bait for a living is entirely up to them what they charge if its a good product people will pay the price they're asking I relate it to being a good product as in fish on the bank is how I value it. MY time as well as yours and others is what is relevant I was using mine as an example if I could be arsed anymore rolling them then it all would be irrelevant as I can't be bothered, I see 24p for a fish on the bank as irrelevant, like you say there are a 1001 companies making inferior products/bait at inflated rates but those who have been around long enough realise that, have a good evening as well as everyone else I'm getting my kit together for a few days on the bank.

Nutters.....all of them!
Mark makes great hookbaits, Gav makes great hook baits, UB used to make great hookbaits.......all this nonsense about price is no different to anything people buy.......if there is a market you exploit it with a great product......if your product is **** then I'm sure people will vote with their feet......
What I find funny is How the **** people can argue about bait .........it's fish food......can we not argue about face nappies and the Ukraine instead......

I'm a busy chap and only get a quick look at this forum due to work, family and fishing. I like looking at the bait section as I have an interest in it, always have done.
This is all getting rather tedious though, with the sniping and people constantly announcing their retirement from the forum. It's boring and makes it hard to read the forum. We are all fellow anglers, very similar to each other in many ways, let's cut this crap.

Read Marks post after yours, nail on head
I don't think there is a decent carp angler around who wouldn't pay for quality bait. The difference is, the market will get saturated with inferior baits and all of a sudden, all pop ups are £15 a pot, couple of flavours and a touch of sweetener, Kerching
Couple the latter with a bait maker trying to put a quality food source together and the angler refuses to pay more than a fiver a KG for (because bait is so important to them) not even imaginable!!! Never mind the effort involved ffs. Think I would stick to pop ups anyday!
Bait is no longer for catching fish, it's for catching mugs £
One single thing that matters with bait, results, the rest speaks for itself as they say

I'm more than aware of the ceiling cost of a pot of hookbaits.

For many years I got my hookbaits f.o.c. Nowadays, I am happy to buy them, but I am a very discerning fellow. I use only three companies and their stuff does me proud.

He shouldn't be taking people's money if he's got no intention of fulfilling orders. I feel like we've been here before.

Been in business 10 years next year. 1000's & 1000's & 1000's of customers. Every single one through PayPal. We have a 100% record with PayPal. 100%. Everyone has ALWAYS got their stuff. Replaced 100's of orders that postmen have lost (cough cough) out of my own pocket without question.
Not everyone is like that mate 😉

Of course you are right Bradders. I spent the vast majority of my life in the building industry as a plasterer. I don't think I will ever adapt into my new life dealing with certain types of people on the internet.
It's better for me to just keep my head down 😂
Edit.... Thank you Greg 😊
