That's fatal that is catch too many from a 'hard' lake,yep that's a given,..lol

What about if you've got a nice set up.,or not so.nice gear,..?,or even worse you like vintage gear and dare to catch or outfish an established member, with all the gear .

Swim rotation has to be one of the worst, I booked 7 Fridays on the trot off work one year to get a going swim every time 😂. Then left by 11am Saturday....that was amusing.

I hate that. Was on a syndicate and the majority of carp were caught from area commanded by 3 pegs. The same group of people stitched that area up for most of the season, I got in there for 1 night and caught well, woke up the next morning and was asked to photograph one of the A team from the next peg, that was occupied by someone different to who was in there the previous night and it turns out the previous guy was just camping to hold the swim for his mate to get in when he finished work. I didn't renew my ticket

One of the lakes I fish is like that the locals have all the best swims and they rotate with their mates. It's like the changing of the guard. It's nothing new I remember similar happening 40 years ago guys handing over swims to their mates and piling the bait in so that all the fish were in about a quarter of the lake. If you couldn't get in that area you may as well go home.

Met this guy new to the area,we was fishing a old estate pool ,now a horrid holiday park ..

We got talking,I learnt he'd asked the question regarding Otter predation on lakes in Devon,a big club..,he was a member ,but not fished any of the club lakes..

He asked the question via the club message board ,they banned him straight away, the club he then joined after ,was just as bad..so he ended up moving back up country,as the fishing he craved did not exist..

Nice chap though,experienced I thought..

I've been on a lake like that - over an hour and a half's drive and dominated by the locals who were piling it in at one end midweek, then stitching up the opposite end of the lake on a Friday night and hauling all weekend. At the end of their session they would pile it in again and fish the original end a couple of days later - this method was consistently rotated between about 5-6 blokes. . .Took me months to suss it out but as soon as did (on a rare 72hr session) I made sure I was at the 'right' end before they were, which pissed them off no end . . suffice to say I caught pretty quickly which pissed them off even more . . .

Part of the fun is breaking into the cliques (when your a newbie) after catching a few and then spreading complete misinformation to the miserable gits . . .these days I tell everyone everything (truthfully) and am completely transparent with bait / captures the lot on the basis that I'd hope they'd do the same for me (karma is def true in life) - most of the time however they probably don't believe me anyway lol so its karmic win win. . . .

Was talking to a river balif thats been asked to do some of the lake aswell at a club im at, he was fishing one of the lake and a bloke round the corner was shouting he'd had a fish to his mate. he seen one of the other bailifs and asked him what size if fish his mate had caught that was shouting... the bailif said 'noones had anything' to the other bailif.

After explaining he had already heard his shouting his mate saying he had had one he said 'only a stocky mate' and that is bailif to bailif

What a world we live in

The usual, communicating by shouting across the lake, when asked how many you have had no matter how many they have always had at least 3 more, very overinflated sizes of fish etc

One of my clubs has some odd rules as the main three on the committee are match anglers, the fish are starving but the 1kg per day bait rule is here to stay, no bait delivery devices ie spombs, spods, even bloody baiting poles, max 1oz leads etc

I fished a bucks club water in 2015, id been a member for about 3 years but hadn't really fished it much. Run by a bunch of good old boys but had a few fairly influential younger lads that were well into their carp fishing

About 25 acres, 30ish carp to mid 40's.

You can bait with a boat but have to cast your rigs out.

I decided to have a proper go at it in 2015. Im a fairly decent caster and in a boat found a decent spot at about 150ish yds. Proceeded to put a lot of bait on it, 3 times a week, every week for about 3 months knowing that no one else could effectively fish that spot

Unsurprisingly i started to clear up and within 4 months id had 19 different fish. Then it all started. They banned 13ft rods, they banned shockleaders and leads over 3.5 oz (these rules only applied to me apparently). It didnt stop me reaching the spot or catching so the daily rig checks and general cold shoulders started

The final straw was noticing that one of the snag trees in the edge had been cut down. I went out to my spot to have a look and amazingly, said tree was lying across it!!

Karma prevailed and that session i had the biggun and 4x30's from a spot in the margin before being banned for using too heavy leads on the margin spot

I had one, fished a small club lake (briefly I might add). So I started baiting a little overlooked margin spot every week on a Thursday after work. Just 1/2 to a kilo or so of hemp and crushed hoilies each time. The swim was not popular (why I chose it) the spot just a rod length or so out on the corner of somoe marginal lillies. One day after I had baited up and walked back to my car the bailiff comes up to me and asks why do you keep baiting that spot and never fishing it. I was a little caught on the spot and confused that he could not know what I was doing, anyway I told him I was just trying to get a spot of my own going as I didn't really know the lake. He just sort of nodded his head bit and walk off. So to give you a better idea this bailiff (bivvy tramp) basically lived at the lake and I had seen him before stood outside his permanent pitch on the other side of the lake with his hands on his hips when I was baiting up after work.
So after the meeting with the bailiff, it had been about 3 weeks of baiting and I thought ok I will give it a go this weekend. I got the Friday afternoon off work although I'm not that bothered as nobody ever fished the swim anyway. Gets there to find you guessed it bivvy tramp has moved his sun faded permanent bivvy home into the swim I have been baiting. Needless to say I didn't stop for a chat I left the lake and decided to fish elsewhere. I called back in the following week and the tramp was still present in the swim. The bailiff went on that day to proudly tell me that he had proceeded to catch 3 off the spot I was baiting including probably the best looking fish in the lake. True or not I will never know as I never went back.

little people little minds, enyway I was on this club lake 20 plus years ago pike fishing at night, as I was a new member I could not carp fish the first year, so I'm minding my own business at 10 pm drowning 2 sardines, and the resident ***** sorry bailiff came along and asked me to wind a rod in, I did he went gutted he never caught me, after that I fukin caned them carp rotten without eny body knowing, snide rumors and dirty lies down there, the carp were nice, I soon moved on, told the club a few home truths about a group of ****s who thought thay owned the joint.

Depends on your outlook really. Some "Cliques" are regarded as "Cliques" if a group of 2 or more friends fish a lake at the weekend. Nothing cliquey about it, just a few mates who happen to fish friday night with a beer and a chinese. Proper secret squirrel stuff eh?

Worst experiences? Fishing both rods to a concrete wall. Rods set along the path to avoid clipping overhanging trees when casting, and a different line angle to avoid snags. Despite telling someone arriving that I was already fishing the wall, he decided to set up between me and the wall anyway. Words exchanged, and the bag head threatened to knock me out. Letter handed in at the AGM telling them why I wasn't renewing, and asking why baillifs don't pull up constant pisstakers (no names mentioned, I ain't a Bertie). Massive fish kill a year later due to completely slow inept management.

Second one happened in the spring. Was fishing one spot, and baiting another around the corner as it was a banker margin spot. No-one fished it as it was sloped and the clearing in the reeds was tight. Over the course of the evening I trickled a few handfuls of maize, occasionally popping back to look for fizzers, moving onto if required, like I have done countless times previous. Onwards to a week later, "bailiff" who I had never met in three years apart from that week pops round at 1am as i'm unhooking a bream. Strange.....who would come round at that time when only hearing two bleeps? Well, he obviously saw it as an ideal time to do a rig check. "what did you have that on?" I'm thinking "who cares? it's just a skimmer". So I showed him the plastic corn, which obviously could mean i'm using anything as pre bait. Then, he started.

B - "oh, by the way, I know you were using three rods the other night. Just a heads up, just be careful as any other bailiff would have banned you"
Me - "Errr, firstly I wasn't using three rods, I was baiting up a spot and going back to check it. Secondly, you think i'm daft enough to use a snide in the swim OPPOSITE where you're fishing?"
B - "I wasn't born yesterday. I saw you, you had the rod up sleeve, and if I catch you again i'll go to the committee"
Me - *laughs* "Up my slee.....tell you what, go to the committee, and i'll stand there with you and relay this conversation"
B - "......................................................just don't let me catch you using three rods"

Back in the early 2000's I got a ticket for an east yorkshire lake, It was controlled by an older guy and his mates with old school values, but not in a good way. ie They had a netting party every year to kill pike. They tolerated carpers, but with a grudge.
Half way through my second season the guy who ran it came over to me and told me not to bother applying for my ticket next year. I asked why, what have I done? Nothing, but carpers are a bloody nuisance, someone's dumped rubbish next to the gate and there's dog food tins in it, so it must be a carp angler. You struggle to argue with someone who thinks like that. I did get my ticket next year, but hardly ever fished it again.

Not so much a cliique, but funny and a bit sad at the same time..

Few years ago,I turn up to fish this lake,I know it very well as I've fished since I was 14..

Halfway through the day this guy appears, asking for my ticket,as he's the bailiff,or so he said..I told him I don't need a ticket ,the 'bailiff'...started to get cross..almost semi aggressive,

I then said I'm lake manager, and I have never ever seen you before, and told this guy,he was actually trespassing on private land,so I walked with him to the field gate,...got his reg the lot..

Never, seen him before or after...quite funny really...

Do you know what I find really sad? 25+ posts on this subject and no-one with anything positive to say despite Adam asking for best experiences as well. What a shame that the negative outweighs the positive! Maybe that's the state of carp fishing nowadays?

I have to be honest, clubs and syndicates over the years have been kind to me - yes, I've met the odd fenzied, OTT bailiff / angler but can't say I've ever experienced the kind of antics described below... Fishing abroad, however, and I've had the misfortune of having to deal with all manner of antics but I take those with a pinch of salt recognising that I'm a foreigner encroaching on other people's turf. Sounds like some of you are fishing in Beirut to me...

That in itself is the problem mate, despite it booming after the pandemic, we are stuck with the same old problems, guys who don't want people on ‘their' lakes, and are jealous of others, managed to get out New Year's Day with a mate who is a baillif on one of my clubs that I'm in, and we were chatting to two associate members(used to be members of the old club in a new lake we acquired) and one had been warned by the general secretary(a match angler) that baiting poles aren't allowed as it's a mass baiting device, the chap had a ear pod in listening to a podcast, was warned about that too, it's getting beyond a joke

You're always going to get a few who gang together in any club/syndicate, not a problem unless they start being selfish and trying to manipulate things in their favour.

But sensible basic rules, low membership numbers (Number of swims + 50%), plus a few long term trustworthy members you can trust (From a multiple fishery owners point of view that is) and all can be kept in check.

. . .ok, here's a semi positive syndicate story . . .very tricky estate lake with more weed than water and 20 regular members. . .top rod was usually 15-20 fish per season, if you had a bleep over the weekend you were doing well, hooking and landing one was a different story. We all 'got on' but not a lot of info was shared, especially captures of the bigger fish and most were on their own bait of choice - with the naturals being prevalent everyone was looking for an edge.

That was until a local animal feed store (that some bought halibut pellets etc from) started to flog Dynamite frozen boilies at a low retail price (under £4 per kg) . . 'The Source' had just been released and a few had started to use it, not with any success but just pleased with themselves for the price point. Once word got around the whole syndicate was on it and it was being introduced in quantity and all over the lake.

Suffice to say the fishing improved dramatically - everyone was effectively pre-baiting for each other and the fish were tearing up large areas of the weed to get any easy meal. It was bar none the best and most consistent season on the lake, with everyone catching over double figures and reports of 'a brace of 30s' over the weekend were not uncommon.

. . .until some d*ckheads messed it up. A couple of new members turned up with buckets of Source readymades (presumably they didn't have the freezer space) and continued to bait up in volume. Can never be sure whether this was the actual reason or whether the frozen variant had just 'blown' but from that point on it returned to its previous rock hard status . . . . at which point everyone returned to doing their own thing again!

One of the best memories I have is when I was a member of Shillamill,nr Lanreath..
Here is why..!

Shillamill is on the otherside of the peninsula from me,a long way ,especially if you was young ,couldn't drive,or mother couldn't either,my only mode was bicycle or Frys coaches nr Tagel..that was it,no public transport at all..
So,I'd heard about the DAM festival at Shillamill, how I wanted to fish it,but no way..
Time passed,a lot of time..

I was married, kids etc, driving ,but still I craved to fish that place.i decided to see if I could get to fish it,so I needed a recommendation, drove up to the complex ,met Mrs Pearce and Rikky her son, they seemed positive and gave me someone's name who was a member, that person was NickSmith1,Nick I'd met before on an old lanson feral water..he remembered me,and I got in..so that was decent,of Nick..
However, there was only a few members, maybe four..me Nick Paul and Pete the sweep from Wales, but originally from this way at one point..

It was brilliant fishing, it was a clique, but a positive one..

God I loved that place,Mrs Peace would put fresh eggs on the roof of my 940,to make bait with for next time..

Some of the best small intimate fishing ever...

Best thing to do if someone is catching well above the norm is to learn from them and apply it to your own angling, not even necessarily on the same venue... Being jealous and attempting to prevent someone from being successful just smacks of not being aware of one's own inadequacies, or being willing to improve... Don't need to be a sheep, just recognise where improvements can be made, and action them...

Well said. But I was actually talking about the people who probably aren't catching shed loads and it's all bravado
Not the number of fish, but I upset a bailiff catching a few 30s with an Avon rod and centrepin. It's roach fishing gear apparently

I must be lucky, I've been in a 30 man syndicate on a 25 acre lake for 5 years, only ever seen about 10 of them and only 4-5 fish it with any regularity, if there is 3 on it feels busy

I have no idea if it feels cliquey to a newbie but newbies are welcomed and there are no secrets. Every one shares info, swims are left alone if someone is fishing there, never any bad feelings whatsoever.

These places are out there

Positive ( bad habit though )

Vinnetrow syndicate, first year they made it so, I was 16.

I had just gotten dropped off by my lovely mother and I realised I'd forgotten filter papers, I relayed my dismay to my mum ( not intending for her to do anything ) and later in the day she rang the head bailiff about car access picking me up, in a few days time, she jovially mentioned my unbearable hardship and the head bailiff saw fit to buy a fee packets of rizla and drop them off his own back.

Another occasion and the second year “atm” as it were ( everyone meeting in the caravan park pub for their membership renewal ) and I rung them bailiff to ask if I could collect it the week after as couldn't get down, I live 20 miles away so 40 mile round trip and he offered immediately to pick me up and drop me off.

Fortunately I found other transport to save him the hassle but I guarantee he's of refused the petrol money bless him.

And it definitely natey wasn't grooming, I was an ugly youth with a less than cheery outlook.

Don't be put off, there are more decent people out there than you realise ..

I have found though ,there are very few true syndicates, more like subscription lakes with a covenant to do a work party or two..

Just make sure you get told all the rules when you join somewhere, and be careful the 'leaders',lol don't change the rules to suit themselves or a mate..

Also, communication is key,I know a place ,which had zero communication, and a lot of followers, who thought they owned the place, they'd change locks and key codes to get in willy nilly..

Just enjoy your fishing, you'll.soon see who the proper anglers are, mostly the quieter ones who won't be shoving a smart phone underr your nose ,to make the phallus look big..

Just be yourself, enjoy the fishing and surrounding wildlife..etc

Here's a positive one.

I've been on some syndicates in my time some were good some middling and some down right awful but after many many years I've thankfully been on one now since 2014 with very few rules (just common sense) formed by a group of old school anglers from the dawn of time and all decisions made for the good of the lake are made collectively, work parties are a joy rather than a chore listening to the old boys reminiscing and relating stories whilst they're sat cooking breakfast and the younger ones of which we all are over 50 years old get on with the work needing to be done (at a steady pace) then afternoon tea with home made cakes by their misses great times.
Usually your the only one fishing the pool two at most as we all give each other space and time to fish when it suits, the opening night is the only night all five swims are fished with a pre-start BBQ by all the members (all twelve of us) those not fishing wish those that are all the best and leave them too it.
