Does anyone else feel that some of the venue rules about nowadays are starting to force you into a prescribed way of fishing?
I have always enjoyed a wide range of styles of carp fishing: bottom, zigs, surface, float and freelining and to me one of the joys of the species is that at different times they can respond well to any of those methods. I do like to fish a few waters at a time and having recently lost one of my favorites I've been looking around to see whats about nowadays. I'm finding again and again that fisheries (D/T & syndi) seem to have rules in place which are really dictating how they want people to fish. I'm not talking about all the usual stuff thats been about for years (barbed/barbless,bait bans,fish safety rules etc) which are largely things they don't want and the rest is the anglers choice. I more mean things like: tubing must be used (with min length), leads must be discharged on the take, all fish must be fully photographed and reported.
Maybe to many those are not significant things, but to me it prohibits surface fishing, freelining, float fishing and the use of simple running rigs which is mostly how I fish, and it prevents me from catching a carp, admiring it and quickly slipping it back to where it belongs without putting through the ordeal of being fully documented for someone else. I have enquired at a couple of these places just to comfirm that they do mean to prohibit any form of fishing other than tubing & lead clip bottom fishing and yes, thats pretty much it.
So I'm kind of left wondering how widespread is this and are there many carp anglers happy to spend 12 hours on a bright summers day, watching motionless rods pinned to the deck, whilst most of the lake stock cruises the surface and not be ALLOWED to carefully fish for them??
Or maybe just as an angling fundamental, not being allowed to tie a hook to line, bait the hook and fish with it does seem odd, as to me the freeline is the simplest, purest, strongest and one of the safest ways to possibly fish.
Also, just to say that i'm not questioning any specific venues rules, as far as I'm concerned it's an owners/managers right to have whatever rules they like and they don't have to have rational justification for it. It's more the wider implications of dictating fishing methods as these rules do seem to me to be spreading.

Yeah I agree.
The problem is fisheries attempt to account for idiots by banning certain methods, tactics, tackle and bait. It's wrong imo, you should ban the idiots and not the gear or tactics/bait they employ.
You end up with everyone using the same kit/tactics/bait, waiting their turn to catch something. That's not angling imo.

Yes, I can see the need for some rules, but I also would like owners to grow a pair and ban a few c$$$$,

One of the many reasons I won't fish day tickets. There's always at least one rule you can't get your head around.

Booked swims too! It goes against all learnings.
I have come across a place with no booked swims, but once set up you cannot move. It's not a written rule but one I got TOLD after moving onto some fish. I wouldn't have minded but there were a total of 2 anglers including me on a 100+ swim venue!
It's like some places don't want me to do what I would genuinely regard as GOOD fishing. Moving onto fish, reacting to conditions/fish behavior, changing tactics... It's weird.
I was thinking about how many memorable/epic catches I have read about over the years caught by some of the most respected carp anglers out there purely because they moved or changed tactics or saw an opportunity or did something different. They didn't do it at these places!

This is a very good thought provoking post..
All these overt rules ,it's not really angling is it,you pay a lot of money ,look forward to the actual trip,when you are fishing,most anglers would react to the ever changing situation that presents to them..ie a bit of floater fishing for a poor example.
As long as it does not interfere with another angler ,and or puts a fish in jeopardy.. or wildlife even ,I see no problem,let's not forget inside every angler is a suppressed hunter..
Rules, rules ,rules,control,control..bit like everyday life,so in short yes,carp angling under those conditions,is sterile, boring,and no chance of individualistic thought processes into catching a fish,everyone sat in a little green mushroom doing the same thing as the guy next door..

Why move? You dont need to on these Mickey Mouse day ticket/syndi waters, stuffed with so many fish if they aren't in front of you right now they will be again in half an hour, no skill needed but that suites most of the anglers on these instant cess pit's because they have no skill apart from what they see on FB and You Tube.

A large part of the problem is greed. A ten acre lake with ten swims means room for all to fish different methods without conflict.
Cram 30 or more swims on it and give everyone half a tennis court to fish with other anglers less than 10 yards to the left and right and looking at a row of anglers 80 yards away on the opposite bank there is no room for angling.
For an increasing number of people it's what they want, lodge, telly, barbecue, beer, spliff, baitboat and starving fish hanging themselves. Sit around being well carpy.

A lake I fish (20 acres) used to be lightly fished as it only had upper doubles in it. 7 years on and it now has an upper 40 and a good number of upper 30s. Your lucky if you can get a swim and now there are limits on how for you can cast out and how far left and right you can fish. If you're not on the fish there is hardly any chance of moving onto the fish.
Kind of makes it a lottery rather than skill. Next step will be people sewing up swims and handing them over to their mates as happens on some other lakes I fish.

You moaning fxxxkers lol.....great post though,there is some silly rules around but as posted previously we all have a choice to be there or not, carping 71 on YouTube said he had just visited the cubicle of death on hunts corner, the condition of that is partly down to the anglers as much as the owners.We all have things that annoy one person more than the next, I prioritise the condition of my surroundings and the condition of any fish I catch. My personal opinion is bailiffs are nowhere visible enough on the day tickets I visit, one man's priority is totally different to the next.....booking swims would work for me for instance.

Yes, great thread. I was on a syndicate, landed a fish, few pics and put it back. The lake owner later told me I had let him down by not weighing it because he needs that information to aid him in running the fishery.
That was the final straw for me, if he's that bothered about fish weights, he can catch them himself! He seemed to forget that I was a paying customer.

For me, there is some appeal with the whole swim booking system - it basically means that if you're not on a club / syndicate with hardly any members and loads of space, then you're more likely to see fewer anglers and have better choices than on a lake where you can just turn up and fish. For whatever reason, the worst type of anglers don't like to make such a great commitment and making a booking is a step too far for them.
With regards to overbearing or nonsensical rules, ultimately it is down to the owner; that said, prohibiting people from doing certain things simply due to the incompetence of other anglers is definitely frustrating, but people who don't know what they're doing can cause serious problems; tricky one.

My current syndicate has a peg booking system, and there's software that means if fishing weekends, you cannot book more than 48hrs in any one peg in a 4 week period. This suits me down to the ground, it's by no means a peggy lake though, I love not having to rush around and having that knowledge of where I am fishing, and, as I have done on may occasions, you can re-book and move at any time, when you get there or mid session.

Indeed. I fish a 30 feet deep pit, surface fishing not allowed, and there you are in the midst of a warm day, with fish at the surface for as far as you can see. 30 ft zigs, no tx.
I haven't been this year, maybe in the winter, but that kinda says it all.

I am lucky to be able to fish in the week now but I can definately see some merit in well organized swim booking system if the lake is going to be busy, especially if the system allows you to move. I remember the stress on a fri afternoon till you can get to the lake and see whats free.
It does make me wonder if it will be sustainable in the long term as I'm sure at least some people will tire of fishing the permitted way, but then everyone is different. There are quite a few crappy things around that I don't really understand why people put up with, yet society seems to constantly churn out a conveyor belt of people who are fine with whatever.
I think a lot of the problems are rooted in the commercialisation of carp fishing. Looking round, some of these new, lets call them "members waters" really are commies on steroids. Less than 5 years old, no cover, no trees, new stock, funny rules, £500-600-700pa and a waiting list closed until 2024!
I am very thankful to still have a haven or 2, where I can disappear back to 1990. I do like variety and new challenges but sometimes it makes you realise what you got aint bad either!

There's so many variables in all of this. For me it's a case of finding sensible people running a water imposing sensible rules. Luckily enough I've found a syndicate where every box is ticked and not mental money. Couldn't wish for better.
I have had the misfortune of fishing places with draconian rules. Man, those kinds of places are just the pits; it's as if you're shackled. The not moving swim is a mind blower, especially so when you see fish crashing out where no-one is yet still have to stay where you are, desperately hoping by some miracle they'll swim over to your carefully placed traps; never happens does it?...sad face.
The rig check rule has always tripped me out. You know when you're on a role and you've had a few, next thing, bailiff type chap and his chum come mincing over and "check your rigs mate, just to make sure you're not breaking any rules mate" yeah, course you are, not like you've come over to suss out what I'm upto then do the very same thing yourself ya halfwits, totally ignoring the fact I've only pinged out 10 baits spread over two rods as they're well spooky over big beds of bait, yet there they are, wanging in the spombs, one after another, what's that, 20kg now and still blanking?

You couldn't be further from the truth, I know of two very well known waters in the SW that are swim booking only and they are rammed week in week out, nothing more than ponds. Park your car behind wood chipped swims, bait boats for forty yard chucks.

I've got quite a few of those places near me.
One of my mates was banging on about a place saying I was mad not to fish it seeing how close it was, and that there was a 'mythical' 30lb mirror in there. One day, I thought sod it, take one of my dogs with me, a small kit and have a lovely day of it.
Rocks up, a little island which must have been 3, maybe 4 rod lengths away had little Cyps crusing up and down behind - my side - of the island. A quick lead about, 15 mins or so later a ripping take; goody gum drops, yay. Mate, this poor little carp, most of its bottom lip was missing. I'm sitting there like a scene out of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest where they steal the boat and Danny DeVito's character is poking the fishes eye, I'm trying to work out the physics of how this fish took my bait. Out of nowhere, fooomp! Nearly jumped in the air! Silly bolloxs from the other side cast 70yds right onto my spot.
I shouts over, "mate, you're right on top of me" I get back, "you fugging want some c..t?" with his 3 herbert mates egging him on with one of them barely holding on to what looked like two savage Pitbull types. I sat there for a moment thinking, what a load of old fugging cobblers, what is wrong with some people. Thought I'd have a nice day out, sitting in the sun catching some rays.with my dog, instead ruined by a total helmet. Never been back since.

For a working man who wants to do a bit of fishing at the weekend and guarantee a place on a pond or for a social with a group of mates, probably not a better place for me. Couple this with shower blocks, tackle shops and cafes I can see the appeal, I guess there is a place for them?
Fishing them on a serious basis must be an absolute nightmare!!!
Down side is that you should be prepared to take the **** that comes with it I suppose, popular places attract lots of people, from all walks of life, the nice genuine folk right through to utter mongs!

Thing is though this swim booking etc does suit a lot of anglers. Especially the guys who go with mates and want to guarantee they get 2 or 3 or 4 or however many swims together so they can have a nice social. And the type of lakes that do that tend to be the ones that are in the owners garden so to speak. If I had people fishing my garden pond I think I would probably end up with some, seemingly, daft rules too. A lot of venues cater exclusively to these holiday / lads weekend away type of anglers now and the rules that go with that have become so normalised that venues (especially new ones) seem to just to go with those kind of rules as standard.
A lot of newer venues have also sunk a lot of money into their lakes, again if that was me I would want rules in place to protect my investment. I think that is the root of these rules. People protecting an investment.

There's one place I know of...you have to use their bait,nothing else,which is more expensive than ,say what you would make or bring yourself...I lost interest straight away ..

I know a water, it's vast. There's are no rules or boundaries as such, unknown stock, secluded bays, expanses of water, features.... you name it 🐋🦈🦭
Sometimes you have to admit defeat, try as you might the current and future generations don't live in an episode of passion for angling. These kids are having a different type of cheese on their crackers 😏

There's a pub near me. One of those chain type places. Rubbish food, you have to drink the beer they have on tap ( no bringing your own), awful set up with tables too close to each other. Attracts some real inconsiderate types....

Yep,I know that lake...moody ,vast and dangerous,like a woman scorned, turn ye back and it be paying you back..!!

This thread depresses me... I left UK carping in 1996 when it certainly wasn't like this!
Won't bore you with the range of huge inland seas we have here with relatively unknown carp potential.
We just can't usually find a way to fish them from the bank...

I wouldn't get too despondent Tim.
Notice that it's the same negative Nora's bringing their dark clouds to every thread.
Modern fishing is rubbish, modern reels are rubbish, modern life is rubbish etc etc etc.
There is still plenty of lovely fishing out there, these places just don't have websites or social media accounts.

OK so yes ,there ARE ,one or two places that are quiet..
Place 1..no anglers ..only me
Place 2..private members club,..awesome Place
Place 3..private lake,only me ..
So they exist,however,as always I tell the truth,most of the lakes on my personel list have been ruined by going into private ownership,stopping fishing or the ever dominant tourist trade,now that genre really has done some dmg,if you have lost the amount of places available ..to tourism ,and eco babble ,some might understand my angst..
In the last two weeks,lake I know,turning into a Zen Park,the other now has dreadful caravans put right next to the lake,I mean literally next to the lake,another,stocked by Peter Mohan,is having eco pods on the lake itself.....no fishing allowed..
That's the truth.

Yes, I know, my old mates keep me informed on those lovely kind of places, just sad that a lot of 'new' carp anglers will never experience that kind of fishing.

Funny thing is if you look at their FB page you'll see they come from as far away as the Midlands and beyond, proper holiday camps come the summer, the locals dont get a look in. One place even has an ice cream van doing laps of the lake FFS.

I think a lot of the problems with fishing is that there are so many day ticket waters, and fewer and fewer under club control.
Many clubs you have a bailiff, who got rid of idiots; you never knew when he would turn up and you didn't argue with him.
Not being able to move swim annoys the heck out of me. I spend a fair amount of time watching the water, so if I see fish I want to be able to move onto them, although if they are in another anglers swim, I ain't disturbing him by getting too close.
I can understand the owner wanting pictures of his fish, it serves a couple of purposes. Firstly and obviously he can check growth rates and captures. Then we also have he knows the fish is still in the water. After the problems of predation etc, this is worthwhile.

People moan about day tickets yet do exactly the same in France, paying hundreds to sit around a lake abroad with the same clientel, difference is you have some dorris cooking you a full english with a bit of toast in the mornings. Sitting on coaches, draws for swims, paying for **** food, fish with names, pale mud pigs.... Whats the difference?
Some will moan about Elphicks then go and fish for (often) stolen fish surrounded by people they would hate having on their "syndicates".
