We said the same thing yesterday. If this was a hack by a random group you'd expect they'd done it to obtain credit card details or passwords etc. Basically for financial gain, but to just take their systems down and redirect them to pornhub seems like a big F You from someone.

My guess is they've pissed off a customer, an ex-employee or a supplier who understands these things.

Hackers: we demand £100,000 or else
Angling Direct: we don't have that in stock at the moment. It's on back order with The Bank of England.

Their still down this morning. So I called my local and got the usual customer service... it rang through and nobody bothered to answer it.

All our retail stores across the country are open today from 10am-4pm where we are now able to accept credit cards as well as cash for anything purchased in store. We look forward to welcoming you in one of our stores!

Also with most companies, the cash handling is handled by PayPal, sage, apple,visa or whoever - so they don't hold card details anyway.

Not sure if it's my internet connection is playing up or something is happening with Johnsn Ross too. I get on the site ok but picking bits out to add to my basket is showing some server errors.

Although it may be everyones gone to their website as they can't get on Angling Directs

If the one thing that comes out of this is people learn to use Johnson Ross rather than Angling Direct, then these hackers have no idea what a service to humanity they carried out this weekend. (Assuming the hackers aren't Johnny Ross, now there's a conspiracy theory for you)

Spoke to a nice chap in the Swindon branch, one of the only shops with a working phone line . . .up and running again by Weds they reckon . . .

I have bought stuff from Angling direct and been in their slough store
I think they are OK dont take the piss with delivery prices I always shop around if my local shop can come close to the price I buy locally or any where

I totally agree. I pretty much exclusively shop there. Love the lads in my local, lovely place to visit. To be honest been to 2 other ADs recently and was equally impressed.

Been a regular in one for 15 years (minus the hiatus for a few years).

I always got the impression with AD that they grew very quickly but they were a bit behind on the IT side of things. They don't remove discontinued items off the website, it's often slow, their warehousing system seemed stupidly slow etc etc.

They are in fact pretty astute at keeping sold-out lines and discontinued products on their site TBF. What they do is mark them down in price so they are massively under competitors' prices so they get the traffic to their site. You cant buy said product as it's not in stock but you're now in the shop so to speak. It also keeps them top of the search peramiters.

The hack they have is ransomware. It's basically held to ransom until they pay the hacker what he wants. They ain't getting around that unless they do a new site or pay them.

Now I freely admit that I know nothing about websites etc. In fact last week I had to switch on a customers iMac and i couldn't even work out where the on switch is. So Apologies if this is an ignorant statement but I thought that computers had a back up. If the hacker locks them out today. Can't they just reload the website from the day before the hack?

No because they've hacked the server so have full control and locked them out of their own server (at least that's my understanding of it anyway)

Can imagine they are scrambling to not have the website down for the xmas shopping period. The share prices have dropped enough already. They'll be paying up for sure

Be interesting to see if they have Cyber/Crime Insurance. You would be amazed how many huge firms don't who's income relies heavily on e-commerce..
