3 8010s for piking, 8000 xtea for day ticket carping and xta big baitrunners for my big boy rods. And a broken xtea on my lure rod. Even use a 6000 st on my float rod

Yes all the time for Carp, Infinities, for about the last 20 years. Bought some Shimano Aero X 4000 2 years ago for smaller rods and am considering some Drennan 7 Series for my feeder rod.

Still use my 5000gte C's on my Tench rods,in mint condition and a joy to use. Have med 5500s on my Carp/Pike rods,but nowhere near as good.
In this case it really is "the oldies are the besties"

Owned a few sets in the past but rarely used the bait runner feature. I've never really understood its use in carp fishing?

My original 3500's are still in use when fishing smaller waters.....
Last year I went back to baitrunners on my bigger water rods as I missed them too much, went from shimano ultegra xsb to the medium baitrunner xtb

Using my 1990's GT 4000 Baitrunners for big river fishing. They are big enough to cope with 15lb line.
selling all my baby big pits, 2x 4500 Ultegras gone today and 2x 5500 ci4's on the way out too.
For smaller reels eg tench and bream I use Fighting drag reels - much better than Baitrunners IMO.

Pretty much all the time for carp. Have done since buying a pair of 6010 aeros 30 years ago. Now using big long casts.

Still using my 8010 Aero GT's for close to medium range carp fishing now.
For France i still use the original big bait runner long casts, bulletproof reels.
Also have a set of the 4500 Aero GT's for Pike fishing.
So you could say I still like using them!

I still have sets of 5000GTE-C's and 8000 sized XTR RA's Super Baitrunner .... The latter are a stunning reel. The former not quite as good quality but a lovely size on lighter rods. Always regretted selling my 3500 Seaspins though

Adam, Shimano Baitruuners have always been my go to choice, 95% of my carp must have been caught on one or other of the baitrunner models.
I went from Mitchell 300's to the Shimano baitrunner back in the late 70's The originals were Shimano sea spins 3500 or 4500 and the Baitrunner plus 4500, I had three and still have two 4500 pluses. The main difference between the pluses and the standard sea spins were the easier to use clutch at the front of the spool. The sea spins had the standard knob whereas the pluses had like a winged lever system. These reels cost nearly £80 each, way back in the 70's and I purchased them at the first CAA conference at Wembley, I actually wanted the se spins but they were sold out.
When the aero baitrunners came out I bought three 4500 GT's (still got em)
Then three 8010 GT's with Dyna balance and twin handles (still got em)
I then bought three Power Aero 6000 GT's from The Tackle Box along with the conversion on the spool and shorter handle, they wasn't true baitrunners, it was just a spool conversion, didn't like em so sold em.
The Big Baitrunner Long Cast came out which is what replaced the Power Aero's, Most of my very big fish have came to these reels at home and abroad, along with big cat's. (still got em)

No. Add loads of weight for no real use over a QD reel. I've still got quite a few (some 4500GT's and 10000ST RB's, so old and new) and the Emblem 45's I have are much smoother with a much better clutch, and there's barely any weight difference.
I use the 4500GT's for nostalgia reasons, but either all 3 of mine are past their best or they're not as good as people remember compared to modern reels. They're wobbly with poor clutches.

Trouble is Adam, I'm not so sure of the newer, cheaper versions, quality wise, my newest ones the 10000 XTEA are excellent reels for sure. If you can still get them, then I would if I was looking.

The only shimano baitrunner i would touch now is the oc models , they are quality.
I still have aero 6010 and aero gt 6010 reels on my barbel and stalking rods.
I have XTE on my 10ft small water set up.
I have previously had longcasts on my proper rods but now have vintage emblem X or ultegra XT.
I have a medium longcast on my marker rod.

The D and thunnus are the better models on the same body. In theory they replaced the B
The smaller front drag models are ok too, seen loads of the cheap st ones used for light sea fishing

I've seen those D's...not in the flesh,they look like a quality item and I think have a Euro handle,and bulbous sea type handle,same reel though..

I started fishing in my youth with a Mitchell half bail arm reel and lost count of the ones after that but these days things have moved on
and I love bait runner reels
the best ones that I used to use for all my carp. fishing were Daiwa infinity 5500 bite and run reels will land any fish that swims including cats an orrible Sturgeon fantastic reels heavy yes but who cares !
I dont sit and hold them all day so never quite understood the they are to heavy argument ? but each to their own what ever is important to you its your money
Now into Barbel fishing I use Shimano 8000 XTEA reels again superb reels love em

I agree Gerry, I have owned a set of Diawa Infinity 5000 reels for 16 years now, love them to bits and would not change them for anything else. My very first reel was a Intrepid and still have it in a box, its battered ! but I have happy memories from my childhood fishing with my Father, but now I have retired it gracefully.

They are but think more expensive for features you donr really need unless you are sea fishing

Still use my 5010 GT's (for barbel) and 8010 GT's for floater fishing beachcaster stylee . . .don't use baitrunners for 'normal' carp fishing but lusting after some Emblem BR25A's for a barbel upgrade . . .

True Jeff. A carbon or waterproof drag is of little use in reality but the 1 piece bail wires are a big improvement

I have a set of longcasts for my catfish rods, they are the only thing I'll use bait runners on these days. I feel front drag reels are way better for playing fish on

Stopped using mine fairly recently, had baitrunners for 20+ years but I needed more cranking power on my syndicate ( shallow lake and they love to kite ) yes I could have got Big Baitrunners or similar but 90% of my fishing is snag fishing now where i am near enough locked up so just don't see the use / need for baitrunners anymore.
I and my friend also had the odd problem with baitrunners as well - when you have the baitrunner drag set really tight if sometimes interfered with the normal drag.
Had XTRB 10000 and switched for XTD5500 - which I will likely upgrade one day !

Going to get rid of some of my old baitrunners, will just keep a pair of 6000 gtes, despite servicing, the others still feel rough, guess the gears maybe just worn and tired.

Still have one 3500 Seaspin circa 88 left, which has been broken for the last 4 years, spool came off with the spindle attached, does anyone know if this is fixable?
