Hi, any predictions on how much if a pest they'll be this year , just wondered if the cold spring would have affected them. I react badly to their bites so im prepping up with sprays etc.

Coils in brass container hanging outside bivvy door . . .creates an invisible forcefield against all flying blighters . . .
Just be careful if the wind changes tho - you can wake up with a headache if inhaling fumes all night . . .

Then i went to Thailand and got proper done
I was due to go back out there a few months later and was advised by hotel staff when i go back take Vitamin B12 for 2 weeks before we go back there 1 per day.
I did so and never got touched once, but you must keep taking them every day through summer
Ive actually been bitten already this year so now im back on them and wont stop until Autumn.
Ive been hospitalised through being bitten by them before aswell
Ive done all the sprays going including pure Deet used by my nephew in Afghanistan and the little f##kers have still done me
Apparently they dont like the yeast that the B12 releases

AND mozzie coils BUT NOT THE DANGEROUS CRAP SOLD HERE !!! you need coils based on Geranium oil get mine from France they work superbly and wont give you head aches etc like the rubbish sold here

. . stick the coil holder on a bankstick if fishing out in the open or under a brolly . . .they still work and you'll be unlikely to get bitten by any flying vampire within a 10ft radius . . .

I remember fishing Sutton park in Midlands for the bream and tench,watching a quiver type all night with a starlight on the tip Me and my mate must have been around 18 so over 30 years ago and we set up in the swampy type swims,we had the crawling over us you could feel them even with hoodies and the ties pulled right up over our faces it was horrible,still caught though even though we looked like we had a bad cast of spots.
Much better now in terms of what can be used,I'm sure Gardner used to do a type of repellent a friend had one when I lived in Southampton really good not sure they are still available.

Yes that works, I use jungle formula in spray , factor 4 the strongest, can get from chemist etc, very good, get the factor 3 or 4 , not the 1 or 2 strength, always works for me.

These are the geranium ones i use, not it stock here but gives you an idea. I buy them from ELeClerc every time i go to France and make sure i have a large supply.

We've had plenty of wet weather the last few weeks the perfect breeding ground alas.
Coils are great though I would suggest something you apply directly to your skin with at least 50% deet content. I use the jungle formula level 4 (maximum) roll on - though you need to carefully apply to all exposed skin and repeat after 4 hours.
Life systems edition 50 is good as well, 50% deet which yes seems to be the magic number.
Also look at the clothing you wear when the are particularly bad they will bite through your clothes. Craghoppers nosilife brand is worth investing in - they are fairly cheap but effective.

I have to agree with Gerry regarding Incognito - it is excellent. Been using it a couple of years and it never fails.
I also use a Thermacell device which is also superb in a small area - like a bivvy say. I don't use the Thermacell refills as they cost a bomb but use other replacement mats from ebay. The gas bottles I have modded also to make the refillable from a gas lighter refill can.
Skin so Soft is effective against midges but not against mosquitos btw.

I bought a load of the Incognito stuff for a trip to Cuba. I got eaten alive.
The Avon stuff works for me.
Different options work for different people. I was told it had something to do with blood type, not sure if it's true.

I've been mauled wearing Incognito too. The Avon stuff works for some and not others too. It's a case of trying a few out to see what works for you. Eating garlic helps apparently

the only important thing with Incognito is you HAVE to reapply it after 6 hours a mistake a pal made when he told me he was getting bitten in the afternoon after that he started topping it up after the 6 hours and no more bites

Lifesytems 50 works for me . . .have to be really careful not to get it on your finger tips tho so apply it like perfume on your wrists . . .rub it into my hair / everywhere but mainly ankles / arms & neck.
Still rate poisonous coils . . .they create a forcefield IMHO

A place I lived at some time ago was terrible for mozzies. One of the locals put me onto brewers yeast tablets. Apparently you need to take it well in advance. The second year I started in February and come summer I got zero bites compared to maybe half a dozen every night the year before. I still use them now if I plan to fish a mozzie lake that year.

I use the incognito pump spray and find it great for 95% of the time.
On the odd occasion i have had to resort to the 50% deet pump sprays from jungle formula or boots.
I prefer not to use the deet unless absolutely necessary as i have had it melt various bits of plastic, including my cheapo easy reader glasses.

Regarding deet content if your talk to folk who live in countries where malaria is a risk nothing less than 50%
I've used Avon skin so soft not worked for me.
Some lucky folk don't get a reaction though I do, netherless they are still getting bitten just lucky that it happens in this continent and not one with malaria etc.
What deet does to plastics is irrelevant it's not representative of our skin.

I'd say it's relevant when it melts the shades on your boat race and bleaches the colour out of your clothes. Savage stuff. But no doubt effective.

No worries though It's on my skin a lot longer than it would be the carp and I've never had a problem.
If you look on the web the products are advertised for activities like fishing .
I had a good search on google, can't see anything so I'm just going to treat it as hearsay keep calm and carry on.

I have no idea ,not being a scientist lol. Comparing humans to animals is daft, it makes no sense. So being blasé saying "it does my skin no harm so...." Makes no sense, and could be dangerous. A hook in the lip could cause them a bit of pain for a short while, who knows , but using something which can remove the protective slime from their skin and possibly more could do a hell of a lot more harm in the long run.

You still have not said how it will remove the mucus lol . We do a good job of that ourselves no matter how careful we are and what we wear.
Yes the fabric contains permethrin as pointed out but what constitutes a safe level and many insects repellents contain it (incognito, life systems, jungle formula etc etc) so after we've lathered our arms with it and some residue probably still on our hands what is worse when it comes to fish handling ?
The point I'm making here is it's frustrating when folk disregard / make comments / statements about a product when they have no real evidence.
We'll be back debating chips in vaccines 😂

I just wish you'd have ready my reply properly, perhaps I was too subtle to summarize- what I said was nosilife was no worse than the insect repellents we use in the scenario I described as they all contain this same ingredient.

Apparently, Mozzies hate Lavender. Have purchased some incense sticks made with natural lavender, so will give that a go. Will couple them with citronella tea lights which I place in the glass which once housed a "Gu" desert.
Both may not keep the mozzies away, but i'll look like a fat bhudda in a nice smelling cornershop.

There are loads of plants that work actually yes lavender is good to grow in your garden to stop visiting cats making an unwelcome deposit.

All this to avoid becoming the elephant man, I envy those who don't get a reaction - it's the proteins in their saliva which cause the allergic reaction.
They say as you get older your immunity increases perhaps when I reach Gerrys age I'll be no longer affected 😃

Normally i would agree with Oldgeezer about Incognito it did seem to be the best repellant against mozzies ...but this year down here in Murcia Spain it seems like they like it !!!!! 
we have had a really wet cold spring so it was ok but now boom summer has arrived and the Asian tiger mozzies have hatched in biblical proportions in the last few days normally when going out i just spray myself and only get the odd bite ...but this morning i was spraying myself and the little buggers were just landing on my sprayed / wet ankles without a care in the world almost like it was an attractant not a repelant !!!
most people here seemed to like Avon skin so soft but last yr i think they changed the formula and it not as effective so i wonder has Incognito done the same ?
Or i have become less bitter and twisted during lockdown and they now like me 
who knows ...but this could be a bad yr here for the tiger mozzies ? just got to wait for the council to come around in July doing there spraying

I've moved to the Alsace, France. I was at the lake at 0445 this morning keen as mustard and covered in Incognito. I was back in the van heading home at 0600, mozzie torture. I've been recommended Autan by our neighbour.

Mate i fish with a lot has never been bitten. He is quite partial to the old jamaican old holborn so maybe there is something in that the mozzies dont like?

A standard size gas cannister literally last months for me, and that's fishing all through the summer, it's a tiny little flame that heats a metal plate (the fragrance pad sits on the plate)
I fish down in the Colne Valley and the mozzies are absolutely awful, the thermacell is the only thing which really works well.

Thermacell is essential for me. I'd choose it over insect repellent but both is brilliant as then you deal with all the biting buzzing b******s

but about as much use as a chocolate fireguard if you walk away to your rods or go for a pee they will nail you UNLESS you got a spray on
also they are not the be all people think they are in a bivvy either as the light is designed to attract them it does
but not all will be killed and you only need a couple again if you have no spay on you get nailed
as I always bang on about something I passionately believe is the best

I think they are as norm, they love me. Personally I am seeing a lot more horseflies of which one has made an absolute mess of me last time out. Interested to find a repellant for them and considering they can bite through clothing, I don't hold out much hope.

I've noticed the over abundance of Horse Flies too, hate the dammed things!
After working on a new section of wild River backings, I was shocked how many of the swine's had managed to bite me without me knowing. Saying that I probably got bite because of being truly focused on the Giant Hog Weed I was removing - now that stuff is seriously dangerous!

It was the first couple of sessions treating it, but it was so hot with all the PPE on dehydration was a problem.
Found just avoiding the stuff (Not as if you can miss it) and then spraying the areas with it in afterwards seems the safer option.
~ Know it's about time the authorities started to take it a lot more seriously, and got it eradicated once and for all, before some kid gets seriously burnt from it.

Forget what the bottle says I was Avon`s biggest fan for many many years absolutely loved it kept me bite free every country I went
and then I started getting bitten regularly and so did a lot of people CLEARLY something changed ? who cares what? point is it dont work like it used to anymore and there are far far better products on the market now

I think I've found out what changed, and it wasn't the removal of jojoba oil or citronella. A substance called piperidin, which was synthesised from black pepper oil.
So possibly with no black pepper oil in it, not so much insect repellent properties.
On the scientific side, some research, blood type O people are more susceptible to being bitten, twice as likely as type A, the 2 most common groups in UK. My AB blood is safe...

Just bought some Vapona Coils from a local DIY shop so hopefully, with these and some Incognito, I'll be able to enjoy a few days on the bank without ending up in hospital with an arm the size of a hefty tree trunk and the colour of coal

Well Gerry – after numerous sessions – removing fallen trees, clearing River backings to make access viable for the very first time (Areas never been fished before) and I'm talking proper “Jungle” requiring Chainsaws, Brush Cutters & Machetes' , I've not suffered from a single Midge, Mozzy or Horse Fly bite.

yes they are so much better than the ones normally sold that are so toxic these Geranium oil based ones dont give you a head ache and work so much better
