Briefly saw a video yesterday supposedly from Holme Fen of a bloke dropping a 50+ Mirror and subsequently it's tailed snapped off! Never seen anything like it. Was like watching bits of a frisby fly off in three different directions.

He didn't drop it though did he, he lowered it back down onto the mat while it was having a flap. Bizarre though to say the least.

It was a Facebook Live thing so it was immediately in the public domain for all to watch as things unfolded and although taken down very quickly it was out there. Evidently it was with the chap who runs the fishery within minutes....

I agree though, this site shouldn't be sharing it, take the link off Chuffy

I reckon it should 100% be shown, no point burying heads in the sand. That happened because the mat was too small and the wrong shape. Not a dig personally at the angler, but what is considered ‘safe' is obviously not fit for purpose.
It gives a worse image to non anglers when things like this are suppressed. “Yeah tails fall off and fish get broken ribs etc. but not a lot and we are kind enough not to show it”

See that's it Noj, I agree that there's no point burying heads in sand but whilst the incident was a freak accident it wasn't "unlucky"......it was 100% avoidable for a number of reasons which will no doubt come out and the angler will be hung, drawn and quartered by all and sundry on social media

Nothing good comes out of the video being shared wide and far apart from Carp anglers being depicted as a bunch of careless idiots.....ok, you could say that it highlights the importance of fish care but with a 54lb Carp probably already dead which was completely avoidable it's a bit late for that!

I'm not going to throw the guy to the wolves, we have all had fish flip, fall on the mat and slide off it so in that respect it was completely bad luck and there for the grace of God go us all...

But it does say in the Holme fen rules that fish 50lb and over should be photographed in the water . Just saying that then this certain incident could have been avoided, it could of happened to anyone yep but if they had stuck to the rules would have all been ok. Surely he could see that a fish of 50lb plus thrashing around in a small mat like that was no good. And also there is more than meets the eye

It's every fish over 40 that needs to remain in the water, plus you can only retain fish for a maximum of 15 minutes whilst you get the camera gear etc sorted.....

Agree mate, not the angler's fault. He was just following the accepted procedure.
Do we think this would be less likely back in the day on long grass or a flat mat? Because it looks like the mat was too small and a poor design for big fish which bent the tail back as the fish fell off centre and kicked. A cradle or cot mat is a poor design in any size for anything other than what it's name suggests... an unhooking mat
His reputation was shot the minute it happened regardless of the video getting out. It's like vultures circling on here when there's hearsay of something like this happening or a fishery doing something dodgy. Name and shame name and shame name and shame.. so I can only imagine what Facebook must be like.
Feel for the bloke.
This is damage to a business asset really, because nobody deep down gives a **** about the fish except a photo of it at 50+ if we're honest. Otherwise they'd have admired it in it's own environment rather than stand around laughing in it's face and picking it up while it slowly suffocates. Sorry, but when we exchange money to angle for fish put into a lake for the sole purpose of being caught time and again, we don't have a leg to stand on morally.
This is the fishery at fault for allowing the fish out of the water and onto/into that poxy mat.
I'm not taking the moral high ground, I go fishing and eat meat. But I don't pretend this is something it isn't.
We go on about merit to captures when in reality a few mackerel or a flattie off the beach and onto the bbq is the bigger angling achievement

Yep it's a bit of a freak accident.

Let's face it the fish is one of those crap modern import things, Israeli or whatever, soft as grease the way that tail came off. Listen to the guy and the goons laughing and playing while dealing with the fish, that's one thing I really don't like. Even if it's a nod fish, handling a lively big fish is serious stuff, not playtime. Can't help but feel for the guy though.....bloody live streaming!

Disagree on one thing Noj, although incredibly unfortunate it was the anglers fault, it was totally avoidable if the rules were followed.

Of course it could have happened to any of us on any fishery with completely different rules.....it was just a complete freak.....but that doesn't absolve the angler of blame for not following the rules.

Like I said though, no point throwing him to the wolves, he didn't do it on purpose and will no doubt be devastated at what happened but will get a complete battering on social media regardless.

If one positive comes out of it then it will be that walled and framed mats become a thing of the past.....the ESP quickdraw type are the future for me...

Let's have it right . We all have pulled strokes , and not stuck exactly to the rules. Weather it be a snide rod or fishing slightly out of bounds. But he was live streaming on a social platform for 1000s of eyes to see and was breaking the rules end of . This could happen to anyone and it could . We all use this types of carp mats and years ago we were using rolled up mats and laying them down on the grass . It wasn't just what happens to the fish . It's about what happened after also. Was it reported to the owner , or did he find out through the video. I'm sure we know the answer . The fish was put back swiftly and will no doubt die down to a secondary infection . If you use social networking to improve your career weather it be fishing or anything else . When crap hits the fan be prepared to take what comes with it

I have seen it, see yes a lot of places insist on large carp being photographed in the water now, but did they used to back in the day?? Nope but greater care was taken, find videos of classic big uns such as the black mirror they are all on large heavily padded matts, love him or hate him this is exactly what nick helleuer mentioned on his Korda podcast metal bars on matts etc and carp don't mix, another point is that back in the day it was a case of one or two guys taking the pics and at least one goalie just out of shot but close enough to help the carp down safely doesn't seem to happen any more.

And as other guys have quite rightly stated he was breaking the fisheries rules and again as others have stated we have all bent the odd one like a snide rod, using a nut when banned etc but fish care ones should strictly be adhered to

Just watched the video, is it 'just' the fin that came off or has the tail broken at the 'knuckle' - at least if it is just the fin portion there is a chance the fish survived.

It didn't look anything to do with the cradle to me - it landed awkwardly/bent on the flat part of the matt?

Yes it was nothing to do with the mat in my eyes more to do with that 55lb of fish landed on a bent fin. That's why If you have sacked up or retained a fish of this size you should probably stay in the water with it . And to be fair even if it wasn't sacked , it was lively and should have tried to let it calm down instead of having fun In front of the camera with his pals How many times do you think had fishes rib has broken by this happening . Caught loads of fish with broken ribs . It's happened but unfortunately for the angler and whoever he is associated with they are gonna get some stick

In my opinion, as others have said, nothing to do with the mat and everything to do with 50lb of fish coming down on an awkwardly positioned tail fin. Unfortunately for the angler holding it he's the only one that is going to take any amount of blame but his friends should have been helping - “spotting” him if you like. You see it on all the old school videos of fishing being managed for the camera - it's a team effort.

A very unfortunate situation and sad for the angler concerned. I've seen a lot less damage done by a lot worse fish management practices - don't even get me started on the anglers who smash litres of water over their mate whilst their holding fish up for the cameras!!! I can't see that this lad did anything wrong in the context of some of the videos I see.

I've got a serious case of fish-care anxiety and this video only goes to reinforce that. Couldn't see myself wanting to get a fish of that size onto the bank.

Its tail is on top of the raised end of the mat at the beginning because the mat is too small. Then it drops and its tail goes almost beneath it and the kick is restricted by the raised end. I don't believe its tail would've managed to get underneath the fish and be restricted like that on a flat mat. In reality you haven't got control over a fish that big and shouldn't be holding it up over solid ground more than a few inches anyway, let alone in fits of laughter. But I maintain it's not really the guys fault, more the marketing of unsafe products. Except it appears it was against the rules and if he is linked to a company it might cost somebody a few Bob

I get your point and I agree to an extent. The “fits of laughter” comment though... he's only delighted with his capture which is what it's all about. He looks like he's about to cry when it happens.

I do agree it's not his fault - I mean, no more blame than you'd put on anyone for catching the thing. I note the fishery haven't made a statement yet.

After seeing it... It is a sort of a freak accident something that doesnt happen often but that small mat didnt help at all especially not with what looked like well rested fish... doing it in water would save the day in this case... Have seen tail fins grow back nicely on some fish so maybe this one will get better with time as well.

Looks like a soft walled cradle to me, similar to the trakker sanctuary mats.

And if im honest, doesnt look like its too small either. Badly positioned in the mat maybe. Looks like plenty of room at the head end.

Just an unfortunate accident really

Just watched it slowed down as suggested below. Nothing to do with the cradle by looks of it, would have happened on a flat mat the size of a football field. Appears the tail gets caught underneath it as he lowers it and thats what has caused the damage as it kicks it tail back in the other direction

It's not an unfortunate accident at all, it was completely avoidable, the fish shouldn't have been retained for as long as it was and should not have been taken out of the water.....if the angler had followed the rules it would not have happened, end of story.

And if it had happened at a lake where it was within the rules to photograph fish on the bank?

He hasnt set out to do that, therefore its an accident. Should he have followed the rules, yes, wether you agree with them or not. Yes its avoidable, as are most accidents and im sure in hindsight, he would have approached it differently. But he hasnt done it on purpose has he.

How long was it retained for? Is that information available?

Assuming the weight of the fish was over the specified guidelines, which I'm not sure it has, yes it could of been avoidable. But, on other waters that dont require the fish to be photographed etc in the water, for me it was just a complete freaky accident, that could happen to any of us, and if it happened to me, I'd would end up seriously considering hanging up the rods

No idea who the bloke is

Of course he hasn't set out to do it on purpose but it was not an unfortunate accident it was an avoidable accident. If it happened on a water where the rules allowed bankside photography then that could be described as an unfortunate accident.

Having said that it was retained for, "a few hours" apparently

I don't get all this photo stuff. A quick couple of snaps and get it back. These pictures of scales, mouths and down the flanks are for the anglers ego. Retention slings are like everything in
Life dangerous in the wrong hands. If you are gonna use one use it for 5 mins to get your camera ready.

Whether it's a stiff sided Matt, soft, flat whatever what happened to the old way of having at least one ‘goalie' just out of shot like I said earlier can find plenty of footage(often of car park lake fish) with someone just out of the shot at the ready in case the fish goes mad so it can be put down safely. And sorry people saying it was avoidable but the angler isn't to blame are mad. Rules state anything over 40 has to be in the water he went against that totally 100% his fault

Just watched it on me Facebook news feed. A lot of comments were saying it was faked... Why...

Just looks like an unfortunate accident to me
Didnt look like the angler was doing anything wrong. In my view that tail was already damaged and the fish flapping on the matt caused it to happen. A few comments were blaming the sling.. Why..

FFS do you even bother to read the thread?

Venues rules state any fish over 40lb to be dealt with in the water (according to Spod)

How many fish over 40lb on a daily basis get dealt with perfectly fine on the bank and go back no worse for ware.

Ok, it seems the fella apparently broke a rule and no doubt he will get dealt with accordingly. It was a freak accident could of happened anywhere.

Ah, well that's ok then, it was the Carps fault for having a damaged tail, (which there is no evidence of) and flapping on the mat.... .....

And for what it's worth it could have been the sling, if one of the Carps tail lobes snags in a hole in the sling that could easily have caused it.

Watching it slowed down what I see is this, the fish flaps and he goes to do the ‘roll it back on to the forearms' trick but in doing so bring his arms together towards the fish's head , the tail end of the fish drops onto the mat folding under slightly and the next kick causes the damage. The fact that at this point the tail is sort of wedged in the corner of the mat against the wall doesn't help the situation.

It's horrible what happen at the carp on the footage. Obviously the angler has his faults, albeit he has done whats everybody should do when the carp flip in that way.
I've seen worst behavior by a carp angler in other vids, one is fixed in my mind since I watched it as a simbol of bad handling, where a well known consultant of a well known carp brand, while he was involved in the process to take the pictures of a really big carp the fish is flipping in his hand and he jump back letting the carp falls hawkwardly on the mat, laughing as well at what's happened. Luckily, in this case, apparently the carp have no issues at all like the one in the OP.

Is it safe to encourage anglers to get into the water? I know anglers do but what about the safety of the angler?
What if you was on your own or it was winter, would you get in?

You can still unhook the fish in the landing net and let it swim back if you dont feel like going in water.

Depends on the water levels I suppose, you might not be able to reach down.
Can't see many releasing a 40lb+ fish without wanting a pic though, could be a fish of a lifetime.

Before the thread closes does anyone know what the result of this was? I.e. did the fish survive?

Looks like it is fin that sbapped rather that the tail body so hopefully will at least survive although be disfigured. I have caught a carp with literally no tail fin that seemed to be thriving and had put on weight since last seen on the bank.

Cant see why it wouldnt survive... seen fish with damaged tails from spawning or infection etc and some grow it back nicely, some stay as they are... Not really a life/death situation.

The video I saw was a grainy film of a fb story so not 100% sure whether it was 'just' fin that came off or whether the knuckle of the tail (i.e. part of the body) had snapped off, although I can't really see how that would happen.

How many " cut tails" are There. Seems nearly every lake has one.
I'm not going to watch the vid. If the rule says pictures in water then that's what should be done. If the fish was weighed and photos done immediately after capture it wouldn't have been so lively and could have been weighed, pictured and returned in a few minutes.

I don't think it'll grow back. When I tried to find the video I came across a shaun harrison/carp ology article on tail damage, shaun stated that if the fish is young and actively growing it can regenerate, but once its reached its full size it won't.
I'd assume a 50lber hasn't got much growth left in it

Carp are carp aren't they, how they get handled is not down to the fish

In the instance of this water and similar ones, sounds hard line but its not such a big thing, they are all replaceable and they will have back up fish coming through. Not some old highly sort after survivor that has been swimming round for 50 years that will never be replaced or if it is, not in our generation, that's the real difference to me. Easily replaceable, lbs, oz, simple

I don't have a problem with these types or waters either, France on la doorstep, absolutely perfect for the working man. I just have one single problem, anybody trying to claim a record with such fish, other than that, crack on for me

I get your point mate and understand, although I do agree it is hard line approach to take and it isn't really the point.

No Carp is less worthy of the correct care than any other, (as you sort of allude to) and in reality it shouldn't make any difference if it was a 50lb Israeli Holme Fen fish or the Burghfield Common for example. Agreed, the Holme Fen fish could be replaced by a similar fish but you could not replace the BC....doesn't make it any less of a shame though....a Carp is a Carp after all as you say...!

One thing is for sure though, if the captor had done that to the BC by breaking the rules, (not sure what they are on Burghfield) he would have been receiving death threats by now!

For me the worst bit is they apparently put it back without telling the owners!

Its ok to make a mistake be it ill judgement, accidental etc but have the decency to take ownership and hold your hands up.

I am sure the owner could have done whatever was required for the fish if informed. Not sure whats happened to it since however.

If a captor had done that to one of the pinnacles of English carp fishing I could understand the outrage!

This is just a 50lb stock fish, in there to earn some money and put a bend in some punters rod, easy to replace, like a conveyor belt, always another to back it up, not a big deal at all for me unless people want to make it one? Maybe it's a big deal for the owners (£) or people trying to get a like on the net?

It's unfortunate what has happened, it's down to the fishery to set the rules, sounds like they have and somebody has not followed them reading through this, if you are looking for blame, who is at fault?

No problem on a sunny day and there's someone to help if you take a fall or if you're wearing waders and they fill with water but is it really wise to make it more or less compulsory to get in?
One suggestion is to unhook it in the net and let it swim away. That's not always possible or as easy as it seems. Assuming you can actually reach the fish there's no guarantee it will will behave itself and not thrash around.

To safely enforce that rule there really needs to be purpose built shallows at various spots on the lake. It is a health and safety gauntlet they're running telling punters to get in the drink as you say.
A modified float tube with a mesh cradle up front is what you want... when somebody makes one YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST

Add the fact that you have to get the fish out, on a mat, unhook and weigh before even being sure it fits the criteria of needing to be pictured in the lake.

Comment off Youtube
hey made racist comments about the lake owners
Retained the fish for some time over darkness
Took the fish out of the water
(All against the rules of that fishery)
Injured the fish
Put it back without telling management

The fish has been found dead

It's one of the hazards of being an angler you can severely damage the fish you're after. It's your responsibility to make sure the fish doesn't suffer a lingering death after an accidental injury.
Not good angling all round at all.

Absolutely. I had some sympathy in that we've all had fish try to head butt us and generally get their own back, but that evaporated pretty quickly when the details started to appear.

That aside, the thread sort of sums up everything I hate about what carp fishing has become. A largely un-natural fishery with pellet raised carp with supplementary feeding required. Fish originating from Israel. Awful fish care. Groups of anglers on socials etc. What grates most is not having the nuts to call the owners and try and help the fish. Leaving it to swim off and die without even trying to help it is contemptible.

I wouldn't define what happened as angling either. Fishing at best

Unfortunate what happened. I question how he picked the fish up in the first place, look at his hand position, too close to the tail to support the weight of the fish

I've just watched it too, I actually don't think the angler is at fault – it could have happened to anyone.

I see a creature that's so grossly obese, I can understand the rule “Photo's to be taken in the water” think it would be wise to add “Fish to be unhooked in the water, and weighed over the water” as a rule too.

To a degree this is in their rules Keith although it does state fish that look to be over 40lb if someone is not experienced enough to judge this then it should be the rule for any sized fish.

Any fish looking over 40lb should not be removed from the water, please unhook, weight and photograph in the water. These are big fish so please ensure your equipment is suitably sized anybody with inadequate equipment will be asked to purchase replacements from the fishery or asked to leave without refund. Please ensure you have the correct equipment before booking.

Obviously carp are unable to vocalise themselves but imagine for a moment the distress and discomfort suffered during capture and the porn show prior to release were audible to us just as would be heard from other creatures subjected to similar treatment would it change our minds as to the supposed pleasure of a catch, we are lucky to be spared this as it would present just a little more than an inconvenience I would hope so in my mind carp care is absolutely paramount to avoid any further than already amounts of distress and discomfort for creatures that we supposedly respect and love.
