Just been flicking round social media and the forum. So many companies selling prepared particles these days and I just wondered how many people still do their own particles and what additions you add to them? I have never used anyone else's particles apart from my own and about a dozen jars of dynamite particles. I like the dynamite ones as they are not laced with preserving chemicals but have always cooked my own. It seems the big particle companies are at war with each other and regularly give particles away free 🤔

Definitely prefer my own. I probably don't add anything special to them, maybe a bit of Betaine on occasions, sugar, salt etc. But I know they are prepared safely and good quality

Defo prepare my own, usually pigeon conditioner. It's so easy and works out loads cheaper. Have used Dynamite jars in the past, but couldn't afford them on a regular basis.

I use bird food form £1 around 1.8 a kilo and they do a flake version to soak it for 24 hours and boil for around 45 mins to be sure, also use lentils and all the seeds they have in the Asian supermarkets then baulk it out further with corn saves me load of money and I take a bucket to canal in morning before I go and bait up with that, then take a couple with me over the course of my stay.
Also caught my PB based on this mix and used carnation milk and coconut milk in mix

Yes and the whole fresh side of particles is what does it for me! I'm amazed how many people don't do it, due to lack of space or area to cook it in I assume! Pigeon conditioner with extra aniseed.......deadly! And hemp cooked on the bank in a pressure cooker is another favourite of mine

Good fun preparing your own particles. Mix up different additions. Cheap to buy in bulk too.

I am going to start preparing my own particles soon. Local farm feed shop has 25kg maize for £9.50, 20kg hemp for £30, 20kg pigeon conditioner for £12.
Are these prices good?
Also how much does the weight of each change once prepared? Does it almost double?

I can't be bothered cooking hemp(I don't use it much) , I buy that frozen from my local tackle shop, but I do most other things.
Groats are something I'm using a lot of
I don't like the idea of shelf life particles tbh surely all the goodness is destroyed

I wouldn't ever entertain buying prepared particles that fred in a sheds knocked up, i like to prep my own purely so i know how fresh they are and exactly whats in them. Of course thats just me, each to their own and all that.
Although, i would buy the dynamite tubs if i was desperate because thats good stuff.

Always sourced, brought & prepared my own, it was the only choice way back and over the years I now have a certain set of ingredients I will add, experimenting is half the fun and as long as it's not costing silly money then what's the harm.
I can understand the pre-prepared particles for those new to carping, or a lack of freezer space, even only using very small amounts in their fishing but if you are able then I think it better to do them yourself.

I did a load last year then didnt use half...i'm currently laid up with torn meniscus and and sprained ACL ... it makes a great cold press the hemp maize and seeds fit great around the knee as it thaws.. I'm wondering can I still use it .. I hate waste ??
Does anyone else put milk powder in ?

Yes mate, good prices and again yes you will end up with roughly double the weight of the dry goods.

I prepare my own to and have done well on a mix with 1 part tigers, 2 parts hemp and 3 parts maize all soaked and cooked together. While prebaiting or fishing I throw in a few boilies and sometimes some sweetcorn in for good measure.
Deffo do them myself as have done for years.
Living in a rural area there are plenty of animal feed mills where hemp, pigeon conditioners, maize whole, chopped or flake are easily obtainable plus maples, tigers etc to order.
Local equine outlets are a cheap source of molasses, garlic powder etc and Asian supermarkets for Belachan, fenugreek, vanilla etc.
Daft not to really 👍

It completely amazes me how many people do not make their own! I can't imagine using something pre made unless it's a jar of the dynamite stuff which is a nice substitute.
I hear such negative stuff about the prepared gear out there
One of the Facebook pages is rife today about manky Particles.
Cooking your own is cheaper, better, and edges can be applied 😂

For the record it's a mixture of both for me. Happy to do my own, also happy to buy pre-prepared.

I mentioned last year I prep my own, and there is a reason for it.
When I was fishing Nazeing in the summer I took some I had prepared but was cleaned out by feeding fish, so had to pop into Hoddesdon to buy some from Johnson Ross. The easy option was a large jar of mixed particles.
When I got back to the swim and opened the jar, they were awful. Even in the warmth, the particles were in a solid lump with fat and had to be broken up by hand.
When I prepare my own I can get them to my own specs, either with extra water to mix in with Vitalin, or sticky.
I have found with pigeon conditioner that soak and boil is more attractive than plain soak in boiling water in a bucket.
I do also like adding garlic oil.

I prep mine I get bird food from Poundland (one with no nuts in) 2.5kilo bag for £2(I think) I go to the Asian shops by my missus house and buy lentils and other beans and then soak and boil the normal way it helps bulk out the bait and it's cheaper.
I try and buy a bag of stuff a week from November on wards and keep it sealed in boxes

Used peanuts for the first time extensively last year. Can't say they helped me at all. I struggled a treat on the water I was fishing and the coots got addicted to them on the backup water!!
I know a few that swear by them and see very good catches so I put it down to me not the bait.
Apparently the redskin peanuts are miles better but also cost miles more!

The best reaction I have ever seen in a feeding situation was a group of fish ripping into a 7 day old bucket of fermented Maize which had been sat in a warm suntrapped conservatory. I use around 400g of Morrisons Golden Syrup per 5kg of Prepped Maize, and always had a conveyor belt of maize that was "ready" and maize that was "brewing". Each week, I'd just take 5kg of maize out the conservatory then make another bucket up after getting in from my overnighter. This of course can be done for many other particles which can break down and release sugars.
Bottom line is, I cannot justify using 80kg of boilies compared to 80kg of seeds, plus I wanted to use something different that would keep fish on a spot for longer. It's an absolute no brainer for me. I was probably the only person using Maize on my pond last year, let alone the only one who used 80kg on marginal spots, whereas the others were preserving their 10 quid a kilo by firing out 10 or 20 baits with a catapult and crossing their fingers.

I took a 10ltr bucket down to canal on my 3 day session tipped it in and then when I done my actual 3 dayer later that day I took another 2 x 10 ltr buckets with me full of particles as well as 2/3 kilos of boilies, over 3 days it worked though as final morning of my last day 4:30am I had a few bleeps then I seen waves going down the canal,4:45am rod tore off and had my PB common I reckon it had come along the inside of the near bank and was tipping up and it's tail was causing all the waves as it was preoccupied with the particles and it was wafting it's tail around just under surface.
I needed that much bait to hold any carp that come along up and down the canal to stop them in their tracks to feed.

Maize is ridiculously under used by anglers.
You catch less of the wary fish on it due to its colour to be fair, but its still mega.
into 5kg + juice still warm I add high fructose corn syrup, a human grade food seasoning and a bit of mollases, which works to tone down the colour a bit which I do like to do for the above reason.
fresh or pukey it just keeps working as you say. I always mixed it with other baits out of habit

cant beat maize when it goes as you said ''pukey'' personally all particles apart from nuts are better after a weeks ferment. i followed a fermented garlic hemp recipe i saw on the forum, the wife said she'd divorce me if i ever made it again. but after the crater formed on my spot i considered it a good trade off
but some people rave about how well particle does fresh out the pan. strange isnt it.

I.e the jars without the liquid goodness?
Soon as you finish cooking them pour them hot onto a colander, count to ten to let drain then throw into a baking sheet and let steam dry, then mix about 70ml per kilo of monopropylebe glycol into the tigers and leave for a few days.
Either vacuum pack or store in sealed containers.
A much better method is a ban Marie potting style process previously advocated by Ken on here who I'm sure will post the details. Slightly more involved I think. But I do believe it's the pasteurisation that preserves with his method and once opened are free to go off and gunk up.
I personally think tigers benefit from being kept as nutri ally as possible

Can you add csl to a freezer box before soaking groats and pigeon mix in boiling water, so the particles take on the csl liquid? Or does this method kill the Csl. I know it's a ingredient in boilies which are boiled so I'm guessing it should be ok?

Add all liquids afterwards, once the temperature of the liquid cools to about 45 degrees, a warm environment makes most things get there funk going
if its dead CSL ( virtually all of them save BAF or people BAF supply ) then I'd not worry about adding it until cooled as you'll not reap much benefit otherwise.
Boiling the granny out of it isn't best in my opinion.
There is some stuff doing the rounds at the moment that can be made to froth with a "catalyst" but its no where near as good as the stuff BAF get.
