Just wondering how much gear is enough?
I seem to spend a small fortune on tackle each month and it's fair to say that if I'm not actually fishing then I'm thinking about it, and usually that thinking means buying something.
It's ridiculous, I could probably setup 3 times over. 20 years ago I was thinking about using a different kind of rod, my how times have changed
Not being married is probably part of the problem since my misses doesn't see my bank statements and I'm not accountable to anyone.
Anyone else have this problem?

Think we are all guilty of having too much tackle. Unfortunately I am married with a joint account. Wife always questions the small parcel bags being delivered. God helps me if she ever sells my kit for what I tell her it cost me.

i need help with this i m so bad i buy full set ups just for a days perch fishing for eg, never mind all my carp gear,even in the years i had away from fishing i still buy the bloody stuff , i think i have tackle buying ocd

I am very guilty of doing this aswell mate so your not alone
I'm always on the lookout for new gear or even new stuff that comes out, problem is even if I don't like or get along with it I don't recoup any of the money I just give it away to people aswell so end up being a waste of money.
Another thing for me is my mrs knows some of the brands I like trakker, freespirit, shimano ETC so she often buys me stuff aswell without me knowing, I no she is trying to be nice but actually adds to it

I got offered a job off a guy on a water I bailiff,he wanted 350 for the lot,it wasn't stolen as I had seen him buy it but he couldn't get on with the dedicated carp scene and was going back to feeder fishing and using his barbel rods when he wanted a go for the carp. when I went to see the stuff I couldn't actually believe what was there,I offered him more but he was happy with 350, he said all he wanted was enough for 2 new barbel rods.I took out and kept the items I wanted, split it all up,cleaned what needed cleaning and made over 2k profit from it. I sold it all cheap,really cheap too so everyone buying got really good deals too. it was gone within 2 weeks.
I'm currently upgrading my luggage to all speero gear as I like the quality and how well its thought out...once I've got that im done...for now!!!

Shouldn't matter if you're married or not, why would your Mrs want to see your bank statements?
Mine doesn't give a monkeys what I earn or spend and that's how it should be. I don't get all this ‘permission to spend your own money' bowlocks I see on FB groups.

Glad I don't change my tackle like some of you guys do, would cost me a fortune.
I've definitely spent a hell of a lot this year on tackle. I've had an analogue carp porter jobs for years, but this year it got to the point of really annoying me and was ruined pushing it around, even though I lash my dogs to it who help drag it around. So I bought one of those new £1k carp porter jobbies; what a life saver! I am going to get a couple more spare battery packs, one spare on the porter and another one left in the car.
I haven't got rake loads of tackle and think what I've got might be modest to some. Got a long range kit, medium to short range kit. Got a few float rods knocking about for a break of chasing carp and a spinner rod for pickles and perch fishing.
If something is annoying me or broken then I'll replace it for something better and either sell on what I don't want any longer or pass it on to someone who could do with it. Gave away a Fox Flatliter earlier this year to someone at work who was just starting up again and couldn't do nights as he didn't have a bedchair - didn't charge him a bean.

After quite a few years fishing I think I have realised the difference between what I want, and what I need, and therefore have a small but reliable set up. My opinion is to buy quality, foe example my rods and reels are 20 + years old, and I have no inclination in changing them.

It does matter I think because if your woman sees you spending thousands on rods and reels then they start thinking you've got money to blow, the problem is more acute when your misses doesn't get your addiction to angling.
The only saving grace this year has been I've not had to plough any dough into a holiday somewhere with this covid issue. We had a cruise booked in April which got canned, thankfully.

Years back I bought a Fox supa brolly thing, I was looking at getting an Aqua M3 compact but just couldn't justify the money. Fast forward a month in, so wished I'd bought the Aqua - bought a second hand Aqua sometime after and gave the Fox to a mate.
Won't be buying casting rods that I can see unless I snap one of them. I'm not one to be buying the 'just released' *super special+*. I have to have a justified reason, not because it's newer than the old thing that's barely any better than. Not knocking anyone that does that btw 😉

You guys have it easy
Try funding a severe lure habit when you're looking at £30 to £50 a time, plus £5 a hook, and fishing where you can lose 10 a day easily
The only reason I can get away with it is that my good lady owns a horse and they eat money !!
I still can't bring myself to spend £800 on a reel though and make do with slightly cheaper gear that works equally well IMHO

Yes, absolutely crazy. I have fished with Japanese guys who make my collection look like a paupers.
50 plus seafrogs at £150 a pop plus a load more that were crazy money. I outfished himn with a dexter wedge and an £18 stickbait though

It's bad enough loosing spombs at £15 a pop, but a Roman Made lure, oh my god, a crack off with one of them sailing into the drink

I also think it adversely affects how well people can fish. Unless you can afford to lose these really big money lures then you will always be slightly hesitant to cast into the fish holding areas near structure in case you lose them.
With a cheaper one you are happier to bounce them off rocks and under trees etc in my experience.
I lost about £80 on one cast last year, a very expensive popper, with very expensive hooks was engulfed by a big GT that found a reef within about 20 seconds !!!

My mrs who I have been with for 8 years nearly doesn't care at all how much I spend or how often I go, I do treat her and the kids a fair bit aswell to new stuff so she has no reason to moan tho, if I didn't she wouldn't care at all, it's my money I'll do what I want with it she has never once looked at my bank

some people whos mrs go mad at lads spending money is because not everyone has alot of money spare and the guys spending the money might be the difference between the kids having school uniform or not, having food on the table or not....

My ex used to moan at any amount I spent on fishing tackle.
One month I redecorated our living room, new carpets for the living room, our daughters bedroom and probably around £1000 in total and spent £750 on new rods, around £250 on reels, as well as treating her with some new jewellery, a real pearl necklace, (none of your yucky minded liquid pearls) and earings.

I am in a similar position to your self.
This year I have said enough is enough I don't need any more upgrades or any more sets of anything.
Just give your self a slap and wake up. You are a tackle manufacturer's dream, different tackle won't make you catch more.

Having a rest from fishing gear got too much as it is
Couple of new cars bought, new shotgun pending and and new sumer house me thinks
Can't see any france trips looming or foreign holidays

That's part of the problem. My misses is a qualified social worker and thinking about the work she does, the pay is a pittance for the difference she makes to peoples lives. I'm a lawyer so earn a lot more than she does but my job isn't half as important, so I feel quite guilty, a new set of custom rods, no problem a third set of top end reels go ahead, it goes on and on doesn't it. I always think to myself right I've got enough then something else catches my eye. I really need to stop.

I'm finding more often now that I know exactly what I want of an item, how I want it to look, and how much I'm willing to pay for it. Generally most items can only meet 2 targets so I've chopped and changed a fair bit to find the right compromise.

I'm a sucker for it too, just a case of self control. For some unknown reason other than 'shiny' I keep looking at the JAG pods, weird thing is, the one I use is perfectly fine.

Over the years that I've been on this forum I've seen the spending habits and manic tackle posts of a few memorable chaps. Clearly got a bit of a problem but great for the used tackle section. Worrying ones for me are the guys 'upgrading' 300 quid reels for 500 quid reels to go with their new custom torrix. Then have to sell it.all cheap as they need a new boiler or
'circumstances' change.

I don't actually have that much gear been using rods from many years ago that aren't even the same, however I'm trying to pay for a wedding so don't have much spare cash going. Maybe once that's paid off I'll be able to finally get some new rods.

It is an illness, there must be a medical condition for it. Presently resisting the urge to buy a deeper, but I know I will cave soon.

I must admit, if I was in that situation I wouldn't be buying gear that I'd loose a fortune on.
I suppose that for some of us, the only saving grace is the gear we have bought holds its value and personally speaking, I know I could shift a lot of mine for not much less and in some cases more than I actually paid for it.

There was a guy on here about 10'years ago. Nice chap, posted well, arrived on here and was all overnthe tsckle section buying , asking, tweaking uograding. In one year or something . He was prolific.
Ended up with a very expensive setup. Then decided to quit. And take up shooting or something. It had occured to him that he was mostly interested in the hunt for the best tackle. Im thinking his name was Chris.

I sold alot of my gear when my dad died,my head completely fell off,sold all my match gear too..within hours I regretted it but I wasn't thinking straight..its taken me thousands to get all the gear back as I want it.

I think this is a really good and relevant subject..

I think I got to thinking about all the gear I had owned,sold or improved on,some may call it an epiphany I dont know but I realised that in order to progress as an person,I had to regress,ie stop buying totally unnecessary gear that I had not really upgraded from...ie stop wasting time ,the ever unending search for perfection,that does not exist....
Now ,I have a nice minimal set up,but some of it is duel purpose,ie my other interests, for sure I have a great set up,but I now only buy what I need,not what I think I need,I'm not driven by hype,or clever marketing ..
Now,one of my biggest regrets,it waste of money,would be a spod rod,I caught loads before,and still catch loads,but on my own terms..each to each own,they say

My deeper helped me a lot for basically the same reason, one fo the places I fish can be very weedy and the fish spook away very quickly so instead of using a marker float the deeper made hardly any disturbance at all, very good bits of kit.
New rods for me just don't no what ones to go for yet

I can't see that being very successful to be honest. If the electronics survive the abuse I can't see the tarring process being accurate.

There is a lot of interest in it, and provided it does infact work, I will be getting one, I suspect I will leave it a while just to read the ginuea pig reviews of those who go before me

Go to be done hasn't it. The amount of thrashing about with a lead etc, it has to be a no brainer and the confidence of knowing you're actually fishing weed free, it's a big thumbs up from me.

I will be carefully using a double sided garden rake next year tethered to a 12ft rope as one of the lakes I fish is completely overgrown with pads from the margin out to about 10ft and there's no practical way of fishing over it and landing anything.

They do make quite a splash to be honest. Bit of a pig to cast too, and if you crack off, lordy lord
Other than that, they're fantastic. The mapping feature is what I wanted it for just to get a good idea of the topography of where I'm fishing, absolutely invaluable for that 👍

Luckily enough another angler was about, what, 1/4 mile away and borrowed a lead. Luckily I've never had this problem but I use 50lb braid straight through so glad it wouldn't crack off hopefully but I've had the deeper chirp since it came out and haven't done it yet lol I find casting them fine unless there is a strong wind then you have to account for that

My ‘woman' doesn't care what I've got and that's how it should be. The bills get paid, the kids get whatever they need, we don't go short of anything. And I spend whatever I want. I'm doing £1500 a month of overtime at the moment and my Mrs doesn't care. Plus she works full time and earns good money herself anyway, she's not one of these lazy stay at home types who earns naff all then questions you spending the money YOU'VE earned!

I've a friend who has a Mrs like that, never worked a f*****g day, he grafts like a madman in the building trade, and hands it all to her, who inevitably blows most on complete nonsense, has to ask her permission for everything. Sad to see, but he's choice I guess.

One of my mates brother in laws was like that. He used to graft his bollox off, overtime galore, his ugly wife used to just used to sit at home and blow the lot. Had a new kitchen fitted, around 3 years later?, didn't like it and had another one fitted, bathrooms the same plus clothes and crap galore. Stressed him out big time, he had a stroke that ****ed him up, she then left him with around 30k of debt. The best bit, they didn't have any kids so there was no excuse for her being at home the lazy **** !!!

My friends father in law, her own dad! Told him to leave her, and/or not put up with it, but no, hes not allowed to have hes phone on after 6pm.....there's far worse as well. Such a lovely bloke as well.

At 62 I've seen first hand some men and women can't be on their own and move from one relationship to the next, I've known women go from an abusive long term relationship straight to another without ever spending time alone and getting to know themselves.

A freind of mine is in a similar position now, he is only allowed to do one over nighter a year and has to hide money away and save up so he can buy bait for that session or even food. But his mrs goes away countless times a year and is constantly buying new crap for the house. Thing is aswell he has taken her on with 2 kids that ain't his, he is a lovely bloke feel sorry for him so we try help him out a lot with sessions and bait, even tackle

The very worse thing that I hear is "I wished I'd listened to you sooner", some people you just can't save them from themselves unfortunately. PainfulI watching and hearing it all. When I get one of those types, I'm like 'oh yeah' and just ignore it now, just can't invest my time in all the nonsense, it's just so tiring.

Basically everything in his collection (cars in his case) must have a clear, unique use and role. Probably a good rule to think about if you are a tackleholic.
It's something I do try to work to, especially for my toys, however if I've any doubt whether to buy something or not, I talk it over with my misses and she always convinces me to buy it.
