Why do people do this? Come down for a day session on a local park lake and I was the 1st to arrive whilst still dark. Had a walk around and aw and heard nothing so went on instinct to get the rods out before it got light. 3 guys just turned up, nice day no rain forecast and they headed to the peg they wanted with no looking and started hammering pegs in to get the bivvy up before the rods are even out of the bag. Bearing in mind the lake has done one small double in the last 4 weeks sat here scratching my head. I'll eat my words if they go and bag a couple but surely a bit of time trying to find the fish and suitable spots is more important than a bivvy

Similar thoughts to me. As long as they are not bothering me, crack on

Nail on the head though, fishing is many different things to different people, I guess that's what still makes it unique

Saying that, with the recent temperatures and the forecast this week I wouldn't be expecting much action

maybe they've been pre baiting the pegs they went to, maybe the pegs they went to have winter form, a lake i fish I want one particular peg and if I can't get on it its the difference between 5 or 6 fish or 1 if I'm lucky.
you do your thing and let them do theirs. you didn't see anything to go on so even if they had walked round they would be in the same position as you. the hammering of pegs is a head scratcher but each to their own

Good luck,I hope you bag one.

I would much rather they just set up in their favorite swims rather than start walking round trying to find the fish, then they could spot them before me! And the more they hammer pegs in the better, as long as I'm not in an adjacent swim obviously.

Maybe they were just on a scoial and weren't that fussed about catching, I don't know but the less other anglers use their eyes and watercraft the better for the rest of us I say!

Maybe these guys fish there regularly and know they arrived before bite time and were on their pre baited spots in plenty of time. Then again they may not care.

Often hammering in the pegs moves the fish off anyway so you would probs be ok

Well there is your probable answer to your question, they knew where to fish from experience of where the fish are likely to be and why go wandering around the pond looking for something that may not show and risk losing the hotspot if someone else turns up and jumps straight in especially this time of year. And how do you really know what has been out in the past 4 weeks? Some keep it all quiet especially to protect their hotspots and they may even have been catching in the few days from them spots preceding your visit.

Myself though, I find my swim, and providing weather is good, rods and net are first things out, and as they still have bait on from the last session, they get cast out, rods laid on ground, net set up, and then bivvy up if I am staying longer than a day.

Everybody to their own.

Maybe. Or could be a couple guys on a social and realising(if this post was from today or yesterday) that 100mph winds are forecast and they don't want their bivvy to blow away. The elitism in carp fishing does my tits in. I get less fishing time than the majority on here maybe 2 or 3 day sessions a year so if I manage to book some time off from my 80+ hour a week job, to do a couple of nights to relax, who the hell are you to say in a overly nasal voice ‘ooohhh what a noddy not even looking for the fish' I go fishing for me and to relax I don't give two s***s what anyone else on the lake thinks mate let people fish for themselves I paid my money to fish same as anyone else. However I never hammer in pegs with a mallet twisting the top is far better and quieter

Dependant what time arrival I'll order a takeaway and then put the bivvy up as waiting for said meal. Set bedchair up. Eat takeaway, sleep it off then set rods up.

Wouldn't have thought there were many lakes where you needed a mallet to get pegs in at the moment!

I deffo get brolly/bivvy up first this time of year - keeping stuff dry is worth much more to me that having the rods out for another 5 mins!

Nazeing Movie bank on the Central lagoon, no matter what weather you will always get someone needing to hammer pegs in, it is hardcore.
I was always ok with screwing my pegs in, but some people...

Personally, unless it is raining I always get my rods out first, my choice. I have had a few occasions with a fish on the bank before the bivvy is set up.

One at Earith springs to mind; I had finished work at 11 at night, driven straight from Ipswich to Earith, and caught a carp by 0:30. The bait had been in the water no more than 10minutes.

If I'm doing a 24h/48h/+ session, I tend to always set my bivvy and bed up first. It only takes me 10-15 minutes.

- Gives me somewhere to hide from the wind/rain.
- Gives me somewhere to sit comfortably,
- Gets all the heavy lifting over and done with.
- Tends to allow mw to more easily get to my other gear in the car.
- Gives me somewhere to pop the kettle on or take a power nap.
- I like setting my swim up, and tend to do it around the bivvy. I only fish a maximum of two rods and generally I get the first rod out as soon as I can and then take my time to decide how I want to fish my second rod.

It shouldn't make a blind bit of difference how people set about starting their session and anyone who looks to tell me how to do it properly or in a 'proper angler's' way is an arse.

Get my rods out first unless it's pissing down
I'm fishing not camping
Sod walking around the lake spending 3 minutes in each swim observing lol
Bait in the water, kettle on 👍🏻
Seriously do what you want , I don't care
To be honest I do enjoy watching the guy opposite putting his 2 man bivvy up, unfolding his wide boy bed chair
Setting up his spod station, his weighing tripod and finally his solar panel
Everyone to their own but it does make me grin 😂

I agree with most others on here..if someone wants to spend 20hrs of a 24hr session setting up their swim and only has the rods in the water for 4 hrs then that's his / her choice.....

I like to set up the brolly / bed and put other items in there locations. I like things my way in my swim...i will then have a cuppa and watch the water, and then decide on my fishing spots...sometimes i get it right and sometimes i get it wrong......

Pretty much I couldn't care less what anyone else does as long as it doesn't affect my fishing or my fishing experience....the lads on my syndicate know i like to be on my own and do my own thing and generally leave me alone...dont get me wrong im not unsociable and speak to the lads often on the phone / via text when were not fishing........

But what boils my piss is the fish care aspect....before I get the rods out, my cradle in all set up, landing net sorted, everything wetted and bucket of water ready etc..... in the past i have had a run on my first cast almost instantly of the bait landing on the lake bed and was fully ready to land and release the fish.....I'd rather miss a run / not have a bait in the water than have a fish hooked and not have everything ready....

Surely it doesn't matter if they are not bothering you? Maybe they no the lake better than you do and have done the leg work before, have caught a few over the years in a certain area of the lake? A lot of us keep notes for this sort of thing

Spot on, I've a diary that goes back a few years, I know what's been coming out and roughly where before I arrive, couple this with the conditions on arrival I have a bloody good idea where they will probably be.
I know the main spots in each swim but still have a little snoop around for anything new. Ill have a lead about then bivvy up, brew and a fag, get me **** in one sock, bait up, decide on rigs , rods out then another brew and a fag.

To be honest, I'm probably guilty of not spending much time finding the fish on my preferred lake. If a particular peg is free I will usually make a beeline for it. That said a blank on that water is quite rare, and to be honest of the 10 swims, I could get in any of them and achieve the same result - more or less. I can't be the only one who drives to a lake thinking is my favourite swim gone?

In terms of rods vs bivvy etc, I'll probably get my brolly up first before the rods go in, and that's just for a day session, since if it pisses down personally I'd rather not get soaked.

We're all different and each to their own I'd say and if none is bothering me, that's fine, crack on.

I usually walk around the lake until I see signs of fish then move into a swim. The bivvy goes up and kit goes in. I may put a bit of bait in trying to keep an eye on the water. Rods set up and cast to the most promising areas. I don't use a marker unless I'm doing a long session and don't know the swim. If they are there that's the main thing for me.

I am exactly like you mate, I've got to no a couple lakes that I fish regularly very well. Alright I'm not saying the fish will always be where I thing they could be of course not, but I do have a good idea obviously anything can happen on any given day.

I'm like that bud I've got a couple different books I try to keep as much as I can in. I believe it can be a huge advantage once you no the lake well enough

On nearly every lake I've fished I've got my preferred swim. Doesn't always mean it's the "going" swim on the particular day I'm fishing there, but if it's free I'll normally make a beeline for it.
It could be my favourite swim for a variety of reasons, maybe it's the one that's laid out best for my set up, maybe it's the best one for whatever is the prevailing wind, maybe it's the one I tend to have a result, but I usually have one.
So I'm not going to spend too much time faffing around.
This time of year, when the weather is so unpredictable, my bivvy will be going up first.
In the Summer?? I might not even put my bivvy up until late evening.

Where does all your gear go if the ground is wet and dirty? Just chuck it down in the muck? I generally set my bivvy up first for that reason. It takes 10 minutes to setup and unload the gear so hardly a session breaker. Bit different if you're fishing manicured gravel or artificial grass pegs.

Summertime I'll setup first then put the bivvy up, but as I fish mainly on the tidal Trent there are no trees and no cover, so the bivvy is needed for shade as much as it is for protection in winter.

I have to set my bivv up first as one of my dogs is a total nutter when it comes to baiting up and casting out. He has to be in there all zipped up and something over the front so he can't see what I'm doing, then I can relax without him whinning mercilessly in my ear hole. He is a working dog and can be very intense.

For some reason or another, it can take me ages sorting out my spots once I've jumped in a swim where I've either been baiting up or seen them during the week on my baiting missions, maybe it's a best guess swim as the fish where I go don't show loads of give themselves away too often.

Luckily enough the swims aren't that difficult to get banksticks in, so no real need for a hammer, although I do take one just incase I can't drive a bankstick home.

I have to usually set the bivvy first as my dog is also a massive bellend until he can chill out on the bedchair, either that or I have to leave him in the van then go and get him once the house is up, either way there's no getting the rods out till the dog is happy

I couldn't work out why my one was going bonkers in the bivv every single time I was just about to bang a rod out, the bugger was watching through the zip, even zipped up. Like a beady mince pie up against the zip 👀 Now I put something over the front so he can't see anything and he's mildly sufferable. I do sometimes wrap his lead to a tree well away from the swim and where he can't see me casting, then he nuts out with the *whoosh* of the rod. He literally looses his marbles. It's right laugh.

Does yours want to swim out for your rig/spomb? Mine does and has done 🤬

My dog doesn't mind me casting out, but if he see the catty or throwing stick he goes bonkers..... he then likes to eat any boiles which go awol and land on the bank....

Dunno if it's the same for you but once he's on the bed ....he's only a whippet and manages to get fully spread out and I'm left squashed on the end.....

Bedchair gets set up first so I can sit down and keep low while setting up.

Unless it's raining brolly goes up just before dark.

Nah, my two are on the ground. I always have to use a ground sheet as the nutty one was escaping without one when casting out. I put a sleeping bag down for each of them, although it can be musical dogs in the night as one of them likes to snuggle up to the other, and the nutter doesn't like it, so he moves to the vacated sleeping bag.

I'm guessing your dog has to have a jacket on him in this sort of weather?
