Can anyone recommend the best gripping / locking system for rod butts when fishing locked up? The rod butt diameter is pretty narrow - 30-40mm.

Take a look at either the solar adjustable or Matrix do one that clamps onto the rod and only my releases when you press a button.

I now have rods with abbreviated butt handles and find the ESP ones ideal and are also cheap compared to many others

All the rods I use now have slim duplon handles. The ESP heads work very well. They are simple, small, and cheap and i have not lost a rod yet. They come in 3 sizes I believe. Having said that they cannot be mechanically locked.

Yes, another vote for the ESP ones, whether you have full duplon or abbreviated, both sizes of the grips are superb.

If you absolutely don't want anything moving whilst fishing locked up then this set up takes some beating. I'm fishing locked up to snag trees as I type this. Jag lockdown butt rests with the tightest insert I can get away with for my rods, coupled with the Jag Rod Locker quick release bungy. This ain't going anywhere on the take. Please excuse the fact I've got red inserts with my green lockdown. I forget to pick a set of green up. Schoolboy error.

I'm not sure I can deal with the shame of non matching gear. I might have to trade my Delkims in for red ones now. I wonder if any tackle shops are open on my way home.

The best IMHO THE BUTT BUNGY

are these they were made and designed by someone that fishes locked up at the famous Rainbow lake now I think most people there fish with them exclusively THE BUTT BUNGY can be used with any rear rod rest

Had plenty and the jag lockdown with the back bungee is the best.

Just remember to undo the bungee before you lift into your take and also tell your mate when hes minding your rods.

Cheers - this is the bungee system I'd heard about. Do you still have pick the rods up at 45 degrees (Joe Morgan demo vid 2014) ? Saved me a load of grief googling ‘strap on' ‘butt rest' etc. etc.

No funny angles. The rod locker is spring loaded. As you put your hand around the rod to lift it, you just tap the button(red in the pic) with your finger and under light pressure the band releases. Then you just lift the rod as normal.

If you have Instagram then Tom did a demo of them in operation a while back on the jag account. If you don't then let me know and I will do a quick phone video tomorrow and upload it to here.

You can face the button either backwards like I have here, or some guys prefer to face it forwards on the other side of the butt rest.

Thanks for all the rec's - really helpful! I've had a look...and Matrix / German Bungee Cord / JAG system all look sound.
JAG system seems a bit more time consuming (blobbing tie wraps etc.) Will compare prices - anyone used the German Bungee chord from OG's link ?

My friend uses the ones in GERRYS link when he fishes rainbow and says they are the best ever

He got them from a guy in I believe Hertfordshire who invented/made them I'm thinking of getting some myself 👍

You only cut the elastic and blob it once, when you first get them, so they are set up for the diameter of your rods and the tension you prefer. It takes five minutes per rod at most. You don't do that every time.

I've been using the small Nash one. It's so tight that the bank stick is usually still attached to the rod when I lift the rod on the take. On the plus side no chance of the rod disappearing into the lake.

I'd recommend the large one

I'm sure they function perfectly, but not for me. They look like something someone fashioned from a box of old tractor parts they had knocking about. I'm not a fan of the cord hanging down either. But each to their own, im not knocking the products function, i just dont think its as neat and compact as the Rod Locker.

Cost wise yes they are a bit cheaper at eleven quid rather than eighteen, but the Jag version is more engineered with its spring loaded mechanism so i guess thats where the extra is.

COULD it be that your opinion is BIASED because you work for Jag occasionally ? that you feel the need to slag off the ORIGINALS ? ( and get real thats what you are doing )

and most of the top carp anglers in the world fish Rainbow lakes and it was guys that fish there that designed these bullet proof Butt bungys
they are DEFINITELY tried and tested in probably the most testing conditions you could possible get with giant sized record weights carp in that lake and snags that would shock anyone that hasnt seen them
and they infinity adjustable to any size rod via a stainless collar and grub screw not some cable tie and of course if you wanted to you could cut off the excess

I would rather buy the rainbow version over the jag one simply because the guy who made them is a one man band and I'll rather support him than a large company.

And I know people who use the original one so I know it's tried and tested and value their opinions more

Er. I'm not slagging them off, I went out of my way to say that I'm sure they work perfectly well, but I don't like the look of them. I'm entitled to an opinion on how something looks arent I? Whether they've been tried and tested by nasa doesn't make a jot of difference to I I like the look of them.

As for being biased, I like my jag gear, like very many people and I think the look of the rod lockers looks better on the set up I have. That's not biased. That's just stating my opinion on them.

I don't blindly support every jag product. If you read back over what I put about the zero pod, I said although well made, it's too big, too heavy and takes too long to set up for me. I said I can see a place for it for some people but it's not for me.

Interesting that you said you think that the butt bungy is the best in your humble opinion. So it's ok for you to have an opinion on something but not other people? I think this lockdown might be getting to you a bit Gerry.

before I left I sold my 55lb Minn Kota to a German guy whos motor had packed up both he and his mate were using them and honestly they oozed quality you would only ever buy them once and they would last a lifetime
yes agreed the Jag ones are smaller and neater but I know what I would buy if ever I went back to carp fishing the proper ones

Listen to oldgeezer his always right..he says something listen to him it must be the bollox His opinion his above everyone and everything 😂 you plug jag no more than he plugs Eric's white carp company Products... 🤫

I don't plug anything or anyone .. I do have the jag rod lockers and there absolutely spot on for snag fishing..
I have ACTUALLY tried and tested these and will continue to do so has they suit MY needs I'm not bothered that they haven't been tried and tested by the best anglers in the world at rainbow..I have tried and tested them and work a treat so simple and easy to use..the JAG ROD LOCKERS get a thumbs up from me 👍🏻 I'm not saying the white carp products butt bungees aren't any good has I looked at two rod locking systems with the butt bungee and the jag rod lockers my narrowed down choices I Decided To go for the jag rod lockers as they look a lot neater, smaller and compact and the ease of the push button system Mechanism .has I fish it the rod locker wrong side of the butt rest I can pick the rod up and press the rod locker release button in one action with one hand...this is my opinion as a Actual jag rod locker user

I've never lost or had a rod jump off a rest in 40 years of carp fishing and to say it's not expensive is exactly how all these companies survive with these ridiculous prices almost forgot then there's the different colour cord for rod locker more money let's face it carp fishing is one big rip off

government algorithm sees how much is spent on "leisure" and then decides anyone who can spend £60 for 3 bits of korda plastic to hang on their lines, or £100 for the latest piece of tingtong nash gash, and thinks "we should tax everything a bit more"

These are about £2-3 each and are all you ever need, unless you have cork or full duplon.
Spend more if you must

BTW, the silicone hair bands are used to secure the rods when folded, and when the rods are in use they are left on the end of the rear duplon to prevent the rod slipping through the butt grips.

Cost of items is all a personal choice. A £50 rod will catch you the same carp a £300 rod will. Same as a cheap car will get you to the same place a 50k car will.

"Quality components" don't make me laugh.

without exception every car has well know faults usually down to poor quality components.
from ladas right up to supercars. I bet it would be hard to find any vehicle today that didn't have component parts made in the far east.
I worked in the motor trade for many years, I know the origins of most of them.

that said, you are very accurate about carp tackle and its pricing .

This.
Elastic Band or Hair Band in colour of Blank.
Most rests in the end stretch and the grip is lost.
You need something behind the grip to be absolutely sure.

ESP butt grips for £3.95 a piece..just make sure you get the right size. My rods almost click into mine and are super secure..they fit so snug i'm worried about my pod and all 3 rods going in the water now

Personally don't like the Jag Lockdown butt rests - the inserts are a faff when swopping between rods of differing diameters; Solar P1 Centre Locks are waaay better and yes I own both types.

As for snag fishing whatever happened to neville ball clips (used to be standard on Century NG's)? I have them whipped onto all my rods(offs set behind the reel seat) and in conjunction with P1s are excellent for most UK snag fishing. Do like the idea of the Jag Rod lockers (the quick release button) but surely they are overkill unless fishing for continental monsters?

Nothing wrong with esp or John roberts butt grips and as said before I don't like the idea with jag inserts that you have to buy a pk per rest I think there more of a tarty thing tbh

The jag rod lockers definitely come close, if not doing as good a job. And they are neater, more compact, and in my opinion look better. And if those are £15 each, id rather pay the extra for the jag offering

I was using the jag lockdown rests, when snag fishing using heavy braid - really good.

The only problem I had, is the little rubber coloured bit which slots into the back, all 3 of mine fell off - but that doesn't stop it being used, and you can replace them.

I use the larger Nash rod locks, I prefer them to others as I use different rods on different lakes and they adjust to whatever size rod you're using. They're also great for keeping the rods locked in.

Way before the Bungee and Jag rod lockers I had my own made when I started fishing Rainbow 2007/08, I had one trip and was looking at how everyone was tying down their rods with bungee cords, rope, pegs etc so came up with these, over 60 weeks fished at rainbow and many more at other lakes snag fishing and never once had a rod move.

The ESP grip stops the rod sliding forward the 12" crook which tightens to the position of the rod stops the butt flipping, when you get a take the tip pulls down under compression and the rod just tremors until you pick it up

Genius and absolutely spot on for rainbow and the like (I would imagine as not fished there' but for me in the uk bungees are not the way forward (I like your version of the arm)

Any form of rod locker would kill me, on the take I'd forget every time. I will always (not just snag fishing) place the butt ring against the buzzer with a tight ish grip. The trouble for me is not losing the rod should be the second consideration to fishing safely. Sat behind 3 rods on locks on UK waters sounds ridiculous to me and not great angling. I would assume to be of use they require a tight clutch and tight line - ok if the snags are bang in front of you but pointless if to the side as the kite will take you into snags.

If fishing at range stretch will take you in the snags. Maybe one rod in the day, but a set of three? It would cost you more fish than it would save IMO

like I say Rainbow type fishing I can understand as essentially you are probably gonna land by boat, so using strong tackle you are stopping them whilst you prepare the next bound bound battle and they won't be too far into the snags.

As for the numpties I see with these on standard buzzer bars or pods - or using at night when tucked in a bivvie - it does make me wonder!

It's not that far removed from static line fishing cast rig - tie mainline to a tree, pop back in the morning and see if you've had a bite.

Fishing for bites or for the look

So you effectively lock your rod in, with the butt ring behind the alarm, yet having a device designed specifically for the purpose of holding the rod in place is bad angling? Not sure what the difference is to be honest. Unless you mean not being aware enough of what you are doing to disengage said device, in which case, you probably shouldnt be fishing snags in the first place

And not sure many would be fishing all 3 rods to a snag, the reason for having 3 is you are covered on all rods, no matter which is on a snag. And even i they were, its more than possible for a competent angler

Exactly on the trent couple of years ago I heard a couple of swims down stream of me on a bend a guy screaming and shouting just after first light when a fast moving boat came close to the bank caught both his lines and dragged both his rods in it turned out he was inside the back of his van taking a dump if he had the bungy`s on probably just emptied the spools and he would still have his rods dont know if he got them back

Unsure if you are deliberately being silly or not?

I always even open water fish my butt rings in front of the alarm as being a safe guard and decent rubber lock butt rests. 50 years fishing and never had a rod go in. But you and the like are suggesting bungeeing down rods - rainbow style for three rods on the local water whilst camping and sleeping. Wow - just wow. Safe snag fishing isn't about keeping your rod, it's about fishing safely - and being aware and close enough to actually stand a chance.

Must be silly to have a differing opinion to you eh

The location of a water is irrelevant for a start. Im unsure at to why you feel fishing locked up at whatever range, line around islands and what not, on rainbow is ok, but to do it in the uk is so wrong.

Fishing locked up isnt to stop the rod being lost, its to stop the fish getting into a snag with rig, line etc. the rod not being lost or moved, also prevents this.

And you can be asleep whilst being close to your rods. Im not condoning being far from the rods, but im sure you dont reel in whenever you need a piss. Its about being sensible.

If a fish can make it into a snag through the line stretch, you are too close to the snag, and being on top of the rod isnt stopping it getting in there. Fishing snags sensibly is the main thing.

My one click “bungie” release, take milliseconds extra to release. It prevents the rod going in, therefore preventing the fish gaining any ground. Now if we are suggesting that using a rod and line to stop a fish getting where we dont want it to go, what do you do when you hook one?

You can wear an inflatable suit or learn to cross a road - I prefer the later but all about personal opinions and standards - tight lines

Maybe jump off the high horse for a while, and rather than refer to people as silly, or as numpties, because they are doing something you don't understand, try and open your mind to the fact that there are ways of doing things, that may be just as effective as the way you chose to do them, maybe better in some cases, that aren't wrong, or unsafe, just different.

Interesting to see how you have that set up Gerry.
I would say that's the wrong way to have it, and I notice Eric has it the same too.

Mine are set up so that the LONGER length of elastic is on the quick release side of the aluminium plate.
When I stumble out the back of the van at the river to get a run, it's easier to grab 3" or more of hanging elastic cord and yank it than it is to locate the little nylon ball to pop it out.

It might not look as neat, but the only spectators I've ever had at the river are cows and ponies

Hi Mate its not my picture Its one I got from the net to explain how its set up I must say the Jag ones look great
I use various methods down the river depending on the bank if using a tripod always tie down the rear leg so its impossible to pull over and if using sticks used these on suitable banks

I use a large pod, and the front legs get 6" to 12" pushed into the ground

If you click on the picture and zoom in loads, on the empty left rest you can see that I have the plates facing the other way...and that the release is done using the long length of elastic

yes see what you mean looks a lovely spot and a good set up
I only ever use 2 rods on the river where I fish on the Trent the bites come in bunches and often have periods where you can only fish one rod due to double hook ups
and I always have a strap securely pegged round the back leg of a tripod though

what a rip off those jag lockdowns are ... you have to buy the inserts separately - and twice or three times to get the same size for multiple rods so if you have duplon and cork you need large and small and 4 or 6 packs of inserts at £5 per pack .. wish i hadnt bothered !
