Anyone still use this mix from pete b from the old black forum? If so how have you got on with it and what do/did you think and how much is it costing you a Kilo to make these days.
I started using it years ago but then gave up carp fishing for a while so never really got a good impression of how it performed. I wouldn't mind having another crack at it if I can find the ingredients at a reasonable cost. PM me if you like.
Thanks in advance.

I made and used it 15 years ago an caught very well on it, even against much better anglers than myself. In those days it was working out at 3 quid a kilo made. One night I recall having 6 runs and landing 5 fish on it, the two blokes I knew on the fare bank had one fish between them. (they were well seasoned carp anglers who mainly fished Taplow) and they knew there stuff.
Even had my first 30 on it and had two very successful years on it.
Only came of it when I moved water and was able to buy base mix from a very successful angler - Gary Verity.
Did well on that for a few years until the kids came along and started to use frozen shop purchased baits.
Out of curiosity I knocked up some PB baits, and to be honest did not do very well on it. I switched to Sticky Baits krill and emptied both the lakes I fished over 2 seasons.
Back to the original question I would recommend PB base mix if you have the time to roll and you want to put the extra effort it. 4 years ago it was coming in at 6 quid a kilo made but I was only buying the bit in smallish quantities. (10 kg total).
At 6 quid a kilo made its not about costs savings. Its about having a very good bait with a bit of effort.
I understand there are a few variations but PM me if you need the recipe I have from 15 years ago.

What was the Pete B recipe? The one he put in the old Carp Addict mags?
Didn't realise Gary Verity was still about? Is he selling bait?
I can remember the old Classic carp bait ads and a couple of his articles from the early Big Carp mags. Serious hauling.

Yep both Gary's had classic baits, started 96 I think. Picked some up from springwell from them. A great fishmeal.

Cheers for posting that as I wasn't sure if I had the correct recipe. I found it listed as,
4 LT94
2 Lamlac
3 Heat treated soya meal
3 semo
1 Wheatgerm
.5 Chilli
For every 6 large eggs add:
75g Vecon or marmite
100g Grated belachan
30ml Ground nut oil
But I think yours looks more like it

How would I add the citric acid to the mix? do I add to the dry mix or dissolve in water and add to the eggs? Also is HiPro Soya Bean Meal the same as (Trusoy) soya flour?

When I used to do the pete b mix I used the hi pro soya bean meal from targetfeeds its been ground up so is easier to use it's about £16 - £17 for 25kg with the citric acid I used to put it straight in with the eggs but if u want to put it with water it will probably dissolve a bit quicker that way

You can also use provimi fish meal instead of the LT94 it will save you some money.
I played around with this mix for ages and finally found a mix that in my circumstances worked really well.
I was concerned that the eggs were locking in all of the attractants inside the baits and only the attractants from the surface were leaching out , hence I removed the eggs from my mix and tested them at home the results were very conclusive , the baits without the eggs leaches far more of the attractants out into the water , my cup actually turned a brown colour whereas the baits with the eggs only leached out a minimum. Of the attractants , as you would expect as the mix is being glued together by the eggs.
As the purpose of this mix was to provide maximum AA attraction not using eggs will greatly improve the attraction in the water column.
Now there are some down sides of using this method in that after a couple off days the boilie becomes waterlogged and starts to float. This is not a problem for me as I rebait every day.
You would have to make your hookbaits with eggs in the mix otherwise they will not stay on the hair.
I am convinced that this has improved my catch rate.

10 oz herring meal .
4 oz lamlac .
4 oz coarse semolina
1 oz soya

Cayenne pepper

Hi Jimbo,
I've never made it or used it. But I persuaded a mate a couple of years ago, who had made bait for years, to try it and he's had so much success with it that he wouldn't dream of making anything else. The only difference was,, he added 50mls of krill hydro to it.
On the black forum, very many anglers used it and many said it was the best bait they had ever used.
I only make high attract paste, because I can only fish short day sessions, but my mix is loosely based on it.

My mail from Pete back in April 2004 after getting to know him on the fishingwarehouse forum.
The measurements (numbers) are proportions, just put lbs kilos after each!!
5 Provimi 66 or SCO 70 Fishmeal
1.5 Soya Meal (NOT FLOUR)
2 Gold Top, Lamlac or Volac (Milk Replacers)
1 Wheatgerm
2.5 Coarse ground wholemeal Semolina
The Provimi, Soya Meal, Milk replacers and Wheatgerm can all be obtained
from Animal Feed Suppliers... Semo from a wholesale food outlet.. any Indian
ones round your way??
To each Kilo of made base add 50gm of Belachin (shrimp block) available from
chinese food wholesalers
To each Kilo of made base add 50 gm of cayenne pepper
To each 6 eggs add 25 gm of Vecon vegetable stock.
That's it!!! no 'flavours' required.. been working for years and will
continue to do so.....
Hope this Helps...

no problem folks,
same here really, I cant be bothered to roll any more. It was easy pre-kids when I could guarantee rolling bait and fishing time.
I do recall reading an in one of the carp mags in WHSmiths a while after Pete gave me the recipe. I am sure the article was by Pete B and was volume of ingredients had slightly different proportions.

I wouldn't. The Crays will batter this mix. It's soft and soluble. Not the one at all for cray infested waters.

Am I right in thinking using the plasma would change the colour? If so what about making some harder hook baits to keep with in the same colour of the free offerings. Would air drying be ok or add some egg albumen on it's own and if so at what amount would you recommend please?

Hi New Carper,
Plasma won't change the colour, but it's not the best to use for harder hookbaits. I use plasma to make paste bait and it binds it perfectly but remains soft and pliable.
I'm not that clued up on making hard hookbaits and perhaps someone who is, will post, but I think it might be best to use whey gel in conjunction with egg albumin at about 10% of each?

Just boil your hookbaits longer ,which will harden them , then wrap your hookbait in paste .
And yes it works very well .

I've taken bait out the freezer, let it come to room temperature and then boiled them again but for much longer.
For some mixes it works a treat and you have hard hook baits, for some mixes it hasn't worked. Try it on 20 boilies and you will soon see.
This doesn't make them shelf life and I do coat with a mix of the liquid additives to make up for any that have been boiled out. If you add glycerine to the additives you will get a limited shelf life, certainly a week plus.

I might give it a go In fairness i will be trying a premade base mix for this season but on other waters where mass baiting and lots of prebaiting will be needed I simply need a lower cost bait. Being new to rolling my own bait the only thing that worries me is sourcing the right ingredients and where from.

There's a few company's about mate if you google what your after, AA Baits, CC Moore and Quality baits being 3 I can think of which seem to have most things. I can't find 1 company that sells all the ingredients needed but can get it down to 2 with a bit locally sourced like belachan from Asian wholesaler. The only one I.m struggling with in a smaller quantity is the hi pro soya meal. I can only find it from an animal feed place and it's in 25Kilo sacks, enough to make over 100Kilo lol but it's only £16 so not too bad.

Going to have a look after all this Coronavirus is over mate. Money is tight and the missis won't appreciate 25kg sacks of animal feed turning up
It was the soya meal that I found hard to buy in a small quantity. Ended up with a 25 kg sack on one occasion. The main main at c c Moore helped me out once or twice with a small quantity. The cayenne pepper was available on the high street at Julian graves but I think they have gone bust now.

You could probably just change the cayenne pepper for normal chilli powder you get from the supermarket but as said the soya meal is the pain, will try CC Moore when I'm ordering to see if he can get any although they don't have any listed only the flour.

and don't forget postage costs as well. Like CC Moore, you've only got the 1 item the belachan block with postage will probably come to about £6 all in and that's only enough to make 2.5 Kilo at 100g a Kilo. Might be worth while looking in an Asian food wholesaler for a larger amount. Also looks like Holland and Barrett no longer have Vecon in stock and that was the best price I could find, 1 jar is only enough for 3 kilo at 75g a Kilo but as rivers says you can get 1 Kilo tubs but again don't forget the postage because it's heavier.

Used to get my cayenne pepper from just ingredients , just had a look , they still do it £15 for a kilo , out of stock though .
I could never find shrimp blocks from my local Chinese wholesale , so brought it from cc Moore's ,

To be honest mate , I used both and never noticed much difference ,
Neither did I notice any difference using soya flower or Jordans wheatgerm from the supermarket 😂

The bait mate , I'm an average carp angler 👍
I'll add this about the bait from my experience , it easily out fished a few of the rated baits , the only commercial bait I have found that was/is on a par with it , Trent baits liver . As I say just my findings and I'm sure there are others 👍

I've used https://www.michaels-wholefoods.com before as they're quite local to me, they do deliver all over however but unsure on cost. They literally have everything but be sure to check the whole catalogue as ingredients are listed in various places throughout. Few years ago, but I dealt with a bloke via email, very helpful. If I remember correctly, 25kg coarse semo, 25kg full fat soya, crate of squid fish sauce, bulk cayenne pepper, fenugreek etc. Hope this helps someone

Fresher then fishoil? Cheaper then fishoil? You both think this is the reason for using the nut oil. Ok. I also have no idea why, but I tought there must be a good reason other then the two mentioned.

The nut oil is used because it is cheap.. I think the quantity of oil is for protein sparing. I believe he stated the only benefit of more expensive oils was to lighten your pocket.

My understanding from talking to Pete was the oil was a lipid source and to help rolling, nothing more complicated than that.

I'm sure Pete said with the original mix , there was enough oil in the herring meal to provide lipids and that a bit of veg oil was all that was needed to aid rolling ,
Veg oil is all I ever used most of the time ,
Obviously that lt 94 is dry old stuff 😁

Hello everyone is there much differnce in using FFHT Soya Flour compared to soya meal apart from price.
In reply to Post #92
Hi
Not really no. Soya flour definitely helps with rolling. The difference between the 2 forms is minimal.
No doubt people will have their preferences. The original mix was made by the lads at Colne valley baits. Pete started to reccommend it and hey presto, it was attributed to him. His 5 minutes of fame has turned into 20 years and well deserved as his bait knowledge is great.
it is a great functional mix and one that i and many many others have used with great success.

Good to see you back in the saddle. I won't ask how you managed it.

I can see that this virus and lockdown couldn't have come at a worse time for your start up.

Hi John,
I missed the business with Enzyme too. The name caught my eye and I noticed he had made loads of posts in a short space of time, so I looked at his profile and saw he had been banned. I read his posts and they reminded me of a member on the black forum who joined, then made loads of posts, then fell out with other members, and got banned for abuse. I can't remember his username, but he too, said he was a rod builder and a balliff and posted a lot on rigs and tackle. At the time, it was said, that he was well known for being banned from forums, so it seems Enzyme might be the same bloke.

Any suggestions for Vecon alternatives as my local H&B has stopped stocking it? Before I order some online was curious as to whether there are good alternatives available from supermarkets/asian shops. I'm using liquid belachan already so looking for something to complement that. I was wondering about a vegetable bouillon powder perhaps?

Maybe check out some local health shops near you, they might be able to get vecon for you.
Maybe check out some local health shops near you, they might be able to get vecon for you.
So with the last of my ingredients arriving yesterday, today became the day that I turned the kitchen into a boilie making factory with the help of the garage for the smelly mixing part to keep her indoors from moaning. After what seemed like hours of hard labour it slowly dawned on me that this was probably the reason that I packed in rolling my own years ago. Anyway that's not an option now as I've got all the ingredients to use up. I used marmite instead of vecon as lots of places are still closed around here. All went well with the mixing until I got to the sausage gun bit, it was a nightmare to get out of the gun, 2 hands and squeezing as hard as I could, in the end the last bit I rolled by hand as it was that bad lol.
I made the mix and then left it in a bag for 15 mins to firm up a bit. Should I have done this? When I first started rolling they were coming out like a sort of cushion shape with 4 corners, I thought this meant the nozzle was too small so messed around cutting another one to find this wasn't right either. So after messing again with another nozzle I settled on barrel shapes with a view to sort a better nozzle out next time as I was worried the mix was going to dry out. When I rolled it by hand into a sausage it was cracking and breaking a bit, so too dry I guess? Anyway there in a tray now drying ready to freeze in the morning. Will report what there like after taken some out to test.
I was looking for a better gun and came across this. Will this be any good to use please ? Link below, thanks

Hah.. exact same story as me.. I was advised that gun.. arrived but not used yet, looks solid, a lot stronger than my previous. Also my table is crap I think I need a gardner one.. also if they are pillow the nozzle is too big.. apparently tmyou need a nozzle a size smaller than table. I was just thinking today, is this all worth it.. seems to have cost as much as a high end Hnv like Blake's hnv pro but with a lot of hassle but I'm confident knowing what's in it.. also I didnt make Pete's mix, mind had more experience milks, I actually broke my gun pumping it lol

Somethings not right if it won't gun out easily, make the mix wetter and put it in the fridge for half hour ( wrapped in cling film )
Lightly oil the paste before putting in the gun and it should then be a lot easier

New carper I am still a complete novice when it comes to rolling but it sounds like your nozzle is too big therefore each boilie has too much paste and turning into squares. It's mix depending but try around 2mm smaller than what your rolling. Your mix also seems too dry. if it requires two hands to gun out it's the wrong consistency. Make up a small batch and get your nozzle size right you can always put a bit of oil on the rolling table to aid rolling. No doubt we could probably buy a bait cheaper that will work off the shelf but catching on your own and being able to tweak things once we have gained a bit of knowledge of what works and why is a great edge these days. Keep trying I am sure after a few times it will become easier and easier.

If your boilies are barrel shaped its cos your sausages are to small in diameter to the diameter of the the table and if u get cracking on the edge of the boilies ( hollow centre ) it's because the boilie diameter is to big for the table diameter. It's easy to adjust if there barrel shaped just use a junior hacksaw and run the blade down the edge of the nozzle cutting a little bit at a time then try again on the table until u get it right.
Personally I got myself an air gun years ago cos certain ingredients can make the paste stiff and a nightmare to gun out, it might have been the marmite as yeast can make the boilie paste stiffer due to its binding qualities also a little bit of oil on the table helps
hope this helps tight lines

Yea obviously the barrel shape ones are from a smaller nozzle I think pillow shapes it's too big. Try in between
. I am sure you will get there mate just cut it back little by little
Personally I find if the sausage is to big you get hollow centre which is cracking on the edge or the boilies completely break on the table. Is the sausage having trouble coming apart on the table if this is the case then this can cause a pillow sort of shape so my guess is the paste is to stiff causing it to slide rather than roll. Try upping the liquids to the mix and putting oil on the table.

Spot on Dean that's exactly how it is, square sort of shape and sticking together on the table, sort of joined at the corners if that makes sense. Could it just be a case of not adding so much dry mix to the wet mix? I added some oil to the outer of the mix before putting it in the gun but none on the table.

I usually keep the dry mix the same weight and play with the liquids I had the same problem the other day when playing about with a mix high in full fat glm and a high yeast content and put it down to the yeast content making the sausages to stiff so I added more liquid in my case I used a little bit of minamino to the eggs and made the nozzle on the gun slightly bigger and it solved the problem. I usually pour a little bit of oil in the barrel of my gun and also put a little bit on the table using tissue as u dont want to much on the table as again this can cause issues with the rolling of the boilies on the table.
Try cutting the marmite with minamino to thin it a bit and keep the belachan the same. In one of my mixes I use belachan, vecon and minamino and it works a treat

its old school to use only lamlac instead of predigested fishmeal or a mix of both, i presume the lamlac is for the soluble atraction part, and my findings in my bait are predigested is much more inducing to carp,
also some form of yeast would be nice, cheap brewersyeast is great stuff,
2 little extras but defo making this good bait, imo better
and instead of getting costly vecon , hydroslates are cheap and common now
a simple tuna hydroslate instead

There are several options
One of my favourite is combining blood plasma with whole egg powder.
The right ratio's give you a high leakage bait.

I used this bait somewhere in 2009 or 2010 when a member of this forum shared the recipe with me.
I used it from november to october 2 years after, i explain why.
I started using it on my local run water in belgium. I used the exact recipe as written below in this thread except that i put in less cayenne pepper ( 30 gr for each kilo of base mix).
I baited 2 times with 3 kilos before my first try with this bait. the day of the first try with it, was rainy with southwest wind and mild for the season (middle of november).
Long story short, i caught so much that at 3 p.m i run out of bait, i started fishing with 3 rods and ended with just 1 ! .... really awsome !
One of my mate visited me to take some shot and by 2 times we were both with a rod in the hand, he did not beleive it !
I used it on various water from canal lake and gravel pit here in France and caught really well on it.
But one thing that i have learned with it, is that it blow after some months if you bait up regularly a water : i have in mind my local gravel pit, were i baited up from the star of spring all week and the result was very good until september were my result dropped sundently, i started fishing 1 rod with my usual boilies and this rod caught 70% of the fish during the month i used the 2 bait at the same time.
The fish clearly was wary of the bait.
During more recent years i tried cayenne pepper in other recipes at various level and i clearly observed that high amount of it was very good but blow quite quickly.
If using it on a water were you want the bait perform for a long time, put no more than 10 gr for a kilo of base mix, 50gr recommended by Pete is way too much for long term.

I like to use a 50-50 blend of both and the dosage on a kg mix depends on the leakage you want to create.
Since I don't know what you fancy, I would suggest test:
1kg mix +100gram egg replacer
1kg mix +75gram egg replacer
1kg mix + 50gram egg replacer

Add flavours and any other liquids
add water to make total 540grams
This should then take 1kg base mix

What sort of quantity and is this liquid of powder? If powder then dropping the Vecon reduces the liquids in this mix doesn't it? Do you drop the dry mix to allow for less wet or add water/eggs to bring the wet quantity up again?
Interested in the Hydroslate .

Does it really matter? just do it in kilos then you would have 12 1k's of base mix
If you really need it to add up to a multiple of 10 then minus a 1/6th of each total so eg 5 "parts" of provimi 66 would weigh would be 4.17 kilo and so on
I think its far easier to just weigh out in full kilos
