As a few of you will know this season I will be rolling my own bait for the first time and being a bait novice I am struggling a bit with pop up recipes. An above average season on my syndicate would be 5 fish so i don't really want to be second guessing inclusion rates and flavour profiles on a tricky water that could be months between bites. i was wondering if anyone could share a few recipes with me so i have somewhere to work from. i will obviously using a matching base mix for my boilies for a match the hatch presentation and will be using the same flavour levels or slightly higher in those for the summer and autumn. But would like to roll some high attract stuff for over the winter or as an alternative bait. I understand not everyone will want to share there best pop up recipe but if you could help me out in anyway i would appreciate it lads. especially a plum and squid recipe as its been my most used pop up over the years

I have a few pop up recipes I have utmost confidence in.
First is rosehip (I use mistral) at 3ml, solar squid and octopus at 5ml and 2 drops of cassia eo all to one egg. I include I gram of essential ff6 in the powder.
The second is similar in that its fruit and fish, 3ml of tutti frutti and 3ml of Nash SSA, again with the ff6.
Third might not be a lot of help to you as it's based on Nash whisky oil palatent but if you can get hold of some this is my favourite... 4ml whisky palatent, 2ml of scopex, 1ml of SSA and 1ml of crustacean extract... All from Nashbait. I add milk b to the powder.

No problem at all, one thing I have noticed with the fruit and fish is that they seem to attract a higher proportion of commons than other combinations but are just as effective with mirrors.

its a 55 pound common i will be after its fate
i can think of a few instances where i have been fishing food baits and swapped to a high attract and had a common within a few hours. got to be something to it i can remember there being an article of some sort that was on about commons being more attracted to bright baits got to be something in it. just a quick question the cassia essential oil what is the purpose of adding that into the mix?. i know that oil based liquids work different to other liquids and rise in the water column which i suppose would be a good enough reason to use it
just curious on your thoughts

I've recently started including Mainline Multi Stim liquid in my pop up mix and also as a hook bait soak.
Being a very thin liquid it is easily drawn into the bait and also leaks out more easily than heavier liquids, pumping out a food signal even in cold water.
In my opinion it's a great addition, particularly if using single high attract hook baits with a sweet smell.
I've been using 5ml multi stim and 2ml sweet plum to 1 egg mix.

The cassia was added because I read somewhere it was both a good winter attractor and apparently also good for commons. If it is a common you are particularly after then the final tip I can give you is make the pop ups orange, bright orange....

Thanks Christian I will definitely be giving it a go thanks for the recipes
Amended.
JB Plum...Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Whatever attractor package you use, keep a drop back. This can then be used to refresh the pot if necessary.

Sorry for the humour.. lol
Sweetners are a personal choice, like colours. Some people rate them in a bait, others don't, no right or wrong choice really, just experiment.
Normally just 1-3ml of Liquid Sweeteners such as Talin or Essential baits Thaumatin-B is a full-strength natural protein sweetener, that would be my choice in a one or two egg mix of hookbaits.
Sweetners work nicely mixed with an amino liquid like Solars stimulin amino, Mainlines Multi Stim, or minamino.
After you have made your pop ups, things like bait soaks can keep them prepped up.
I often use as a light glaze every so often on a batch of hookbaits or corkballs from the below combo.
90ml Amino of choice above.
7ml of flavour attractor of choice
1-3ml Talin sweetener in a secure 100ml bottle, shake well before use and Just to appeal to the carps taste senses.
These are only a decent starting point, Levels can be adjusted to personal preference.

Thanks scaley appreciate it mate I will be using Thaumatin-b and see how it goes. I no mike wilmott speaks very highly of it in his book. 7ml of flavour in a pot? Obviously not in one go your just adding it over a course of months as an when they need it?
5m Banana,
5ml Scopex
5ml pineapple.
with five drops of n butyric.
will 15 ml of flavour even in a high attract single be too much ?

In reply to Post #29
I have had success using them at what are considered to be VERY high levels. I should state that I have only used them as singles, not over bait at all.
2ml plum (MEGA pokey stuff)
10ml S&O
Half a teaspoon each of SS and FF6

Try 10ml s&o and 10ml Scopex then. That'll clear a kitchen out.

Boycie what levels do you use for your plum and S&O at on the ub thread?
5ml of RH Megaspice
2ml of Verselle Laga Garlic Oil to one egg
They stink, but definitely work.

Lots of recipes with liquid flavours as the attractants. Any ideas on powders that can be added to the mix. GLM is the obvious one, but what about things like the amino mixes from Feedstim?

use a liquid preservative if you want or just air dry for a week

If you air dry properly and that might take a couple of weeks depending on the environment, and the liquids you add contain a reasonable quantity of glycine then the baits will last forever. However this level of drying can make some baits to hard for a needle. If your mix has glass spheres you may be okay but I always add a decent amount of cork granules which has the same effect, also makes them super bouyant

Afew seasons ago, in the heat of the moment, and under the influence of a certain single malt, i accidently used 15ml of Ting Tong in a one egg mix, and actually caught with those overdosed popups. If memory serves me right, the final outcome of the 5ml vs 15ml Ting Tongs was ca 60/40
Another "deadly combo" from the JB stable, is a wicked blend of 2/3 Caramel Banana + 1/3 Plum
Subtle but DEADLY !!! 3ml goes along way

Equal parts pineapple/Scopex/pineapple at 5ml per egg & 5 drops n-butyric - a very well know one there for you.
2 lots of pineapple.
Is that a typo, or does it use two different brands of a Pineapple flavour ?

Add 1.6ml of each flavour (Pineapple, Banana, Scopex) + 5 drops of NBA to 1 egg.
Don´t want to complicate things any further discussing emulsions, but it´s advisable to add each flavour individually to the egg, and not one dollop of the 3 flavours mixed beforehand. How big a difference this makes, well, that´s up for another discussion, at a later date.

You mean mix each 1.5 ml into the egg as you go or add one at a time then mix the whole lot?

I prefer to match my bottom baits nowadays with a bit of a (secret) twist.
My fav back in the day was 1ml of Hutchies Lobster thermadore and 6 drops of Nutrabaits n butyric per egg. With the same mix of flavour added to the pot of dried baits every few weeks,,,and on and on and on!
Caught a few on that, including fished as singles, which isn't my normal style.

Do people put oil such as hemp oil in their popup mix?
In reply to Post #51
One at a time, if using different flavour bases, to ensure correct dosage
Compatible, flexible flavours can be blended prior, but not on different bases, eg oil, EA, MPG

It will slightly depend on the pop up mix but easily up to 10ml. I always add a few grams of egg albumin to toughen up the mix. Another way is to remove the yoke and only use the egg white from the egg.
Once your baits are fully dry put them in a pot and prepare a mixture of 25ml glycerine and 5ml of your flavour combination. Add 5ml of the mixture to the pot and shake well. Shake the pot every day until the liquid has soaked in. Then add another 5ml and do the whole thing again. Each time you do this it will take the liquid a bit longer to soak in, eventually it won't soak in any more. At this point they are perfect but to be honest they will be very good after the first soaking.

Fair to say that combination was thought of as the best one I made, we called it Tong Tong after Iain Mac who pointed me in the right direction there.
